Review of Asda Stores

31 May 08, 00:27

appreciate what u got 5*

If you live in a town with an Asda, you really wont appreciate how lucky you are. The choice where I live is luxury food shopping in Sainsbury or close to luxury food shopping in Tesco. I regulary travel the 60 miles to Taunton to experience the wonders of Asda. The own brand food is unbeatable, the clothes are excellent value and at the season times ( halloween, xmas, easter etc) they have ranges of exclusives that you cant get anywhere else.

2 hour drive 5*

from where i live it is a 2 hour drive to get to this amazing place. We had heasrd that it was pricey so made it the main focus of our trip. Pricey, no. Id say below average on price when compared to Lego land or London Dungeons or Madame Tousauds. You get what you pay for, and this is real value for money. Get up close and personal with the sharks, the fish tunnel is amazing ( although I did feel quite dizzy) and the kids get to "play" inside the tanks. Stop moaning about the price, its a great day out fer fish sake!!

Review of Paper Mill Shop

much better 5*

I spend a darn fortune in here. we have one near us , but Itry and wait till we go to Street to buy the bulk of what I need.

Paper and card is sold by a box and you pay for the box ... but the content of the box - colours, thickness, paper or card is entirely your choice. Brilliant.

Avoid the high street 5*

I will never buy from a Next shop again now that I have found the discount outlet in Clarkes Village. SOOOOOO cheap. Its huge, its all end of range and its great value. last visit 3 pairs of jeans ( £29.99) for £9 a pair. polo shirts for a fiver. Daughter stocked up on shirts, jeans and jumpers too. ONLY pain is that there is NO changing room, so u find half naked people trying on in the aisles! NICE !!

Review of Roly's Fudge Pantry

29 May 08, 17:43

Sugar delight 5*

Rolys have become so damn famous that there was always a risk of them losing sight of what it was that made them successful in the first place.

Luckily they havent!

You can still see the staff making the fudge on the premesis. The huge marble slab give you perfect view of the warm, nearly set fudge as its rolled out of the copper pans and neaded into shape.

Brilliant to watch and great to eat. Basic flavours but bloomin lovely

Review of Lundy Office

28 May 08, 11:47

A great voyage 5*

Book yer tickets here for a trip to Lundy Island. Lundy is 11 miles off the North Devon Coast and accessable by boat or helecopter. Boats ( MS Oldenburg) sail daily from Bideford and Ilfracombe. Its a unique isolated island with its own ruling body. The Marisco bar is a great place to have a bite to eat. If you wish to stay, some of the buildings are avaiable to hire too!

Review of Cardiff International Arena

22 May 08, 19:04

great venue 5*

Even tho this place is a pain in the butt to find ( its not sign posted at all) it pulls all the big names and is a great venue. Intimately sized. \\th ebars are always busy, the staff are really help full, although the door staff treat you like youre a convict..... and how many times do tickets need checking??

ONLY problem, its looking old now and parking is a complete nightmare. The nearby NCP must be avoided at all costs ... it took 3 hours to get a parking ticket and to get out after the gig.

this bear factory is actually inside Hamleys!

Brave the jugglers and the guys selling the magic tricks and head for the 3rd floor.

You get to make ur own bear! Choose the style, how cuddly it is, what uniform u dress it in, you can even record a special message for the bear \\ dog\\ animal to say to ur loved one.

Its the only gift that you can get for any member of the family .. no matter how old.

Create a Police bear for a cop friend, a love bear for a loved one , a baby bear for a Christening .. the list is endless ...

Review of Flambards Experience

Victoria would love it 5*

This theme park offers so much more than just rides an shops. My fave bit is the fascinating Victorian Village that takes you back in time to wander through Victorian streets with shops, homes and businesses.

Amazingly there is a Chemist’s Shop,a real life time capsule that was hidden and untouched for 70 years before being transported lock stock and barrel to Flambards. A great day out and well worth a trip down south

Review of Ruda Holiday Park

17 May 08, 18:48

never stayed 5*

never stayed at Ruda, but regularly use Cascades ( the on site swimming pool ) . Its a great size family fun pool, with slides for the big kids and slides for the toddlers. Its an intergrated toddler and adult pool with rapids and fast water areas in the adult bit. All housed in the same pool but the toddler area is clearly defined and sectioned from the adult. Non residents of Ruda can also use the pool facilities. ONe criticism, the water is lovely and warm , but above water level the temperature can be cold and the walk from pool to changing rooms is bloody freezing!!

Review of Old Bridge Antique Centre

17 May 08, 14:45

Allow a couple of hours 5*

Once you have found this place in Market street, you will know what a little gem this emporium is. Its so full, it spews out into the street. A real Aladdins cave of old stuff. Postcards, furniture, pictures, medals, stamps, spoons, books, 78s, gramophones, plates, if its collectable, its here. It will take you a good hour just to stand and look at all the trinkets and curios in the wall long glass cabinets. THEN when you've checked out the enormous floor space, head downstairs for a second floor of the same.

this shop is the hub of this village community. A great place for those "bits" you forgot to get from Tesco. A bit over priced and a bit basic, but its here for the locals and is survivng. The post office is essential and apart from Car Tax and Passport Forms, they do everything the main post office in Bple does. Long live the village shop.

Review of Longleat Safari Park

14 May 08, 22:27

The original and best 5*

Longleat was the UKs first safari park and its still the best. Its not a zoo, its a wild life park. the animals roam "wild" while you drive through their enclosures. The monkeys ar such fun and climb over your car as you pass through - so make sure everything on your car is secured. I lost a windscreen wiper AND a metal trim from my car roof - lol. Animals include elephants, rinos, giraffes, yak, buffalo, flamingos, butterflies. No matter where u are in the UK plan a trip to Longleat and you will have an amazing time.

Review of West Somerset Railway

Back to the Time of the Railway Children. 5*

I wouldnt ever have thought that i would enjoy a train trip so much. There is something truely wonderful about a steam engine. The smell, the sounds all add to an amazing adventure. The actual length of track is relatively short, about 15 miles, but you can hop on and off the train and stop at the restored stations along the way. Its a real trip back in time, to a bygone age, when life was sweeter, grass was greener and the air was full of steam ....

There are a few Patts around North Devon and thats for a reason. They supply all the local food businesses. The hotels, restauants and cafes all rely on Patts to supply them so they must be good. theres a smell of history that hits you when you open the door to this shop. This shop wouldnt be out of place in Diagon Alley ( Harry Potter). It really is an old fashioned book shop, even the guy behind the counter dresses in waistcoat , shirt and tie, all adding to the ambiance of the place. One final treat , just like in the olden days, when you have purchase your book, the owner lovingly wraps the book in plain brown paper and hands it over.

1646 5*

was a very significant date in the Torry callendar. This small village plays a huge part in Britains history. You will find out why in this living exhibition. Using a mixture of live acting, static displays, sound and visual trickery, you actually LIVE this experience. Its sort of a small version on the London Dungeons, but a lot less bloody! Well worth a visit with the family ... good to bear in mind for a rainy day!

I recently had to buy new staff uniforms and headed st8 for Primark. Its incredibly cheap and the quality is good. OK so the clothes wont last for more than a season, but hey a Polo shirt at £2.50 is so much cheaper than the £14.75 branded one I was offered by a local uniforms supplier. Plus, if they get damaged, at £2.50, i can just go and buy a new one.

This is a local charity shop supporting the much needed local hospice. Clean fresh and fun! Clean : the clothes are washed and pressed, the shop is hoovered and well presented. Fresh: although a small shop, it doesnt look like a jumble sale as the shop is roomy and airy. Fun: these ladies are a real laugh, they hold special events for special occasions (halloween they had live dummies in the window, scareing the hell out of people walking by).

Matthew Oxemham ... what a star. Imagine Katweasle in charge of a fishing boat. Mathew is as mad as a hatter and will give you the best boating experience you will ever have. If you want to see the North Devon coastline form the sea side, head for Lynmouth Harbour and make a b line for Matt!

Review of National Trust

Dont Drive 5*

The best way to visit this place is by NOT driving to it. Start off in Lyndale carpark and the walk up the river to the cafe. You'll need sustinance by the time you've reached the cafe. Its a glorious walk on a sunny day, but it a long walk. Luckily not too strenuous. Its ur typical National trust shop. food over priced but nice. Shop full of National Trust curios.

Review of Hardings Leather & Sheepskin Shop

This is fab! 5*

WOW such a small shop but boy do they cram it all in! Whata massive selection of goods, A whole wall of gents leather jackets, another wall of ladies jackets. It really is an Aladdins cave. Theres stuff everywhere. All over the walls, hanging from the ceilings. My wife had a beautiful handbag. You really dont get this sort of shop anywhere else. A must.

Review of Rockford Inn

Its not in Lynton! 5*

A bit mis leading labelling this as Lynton or Lynmouth . its actually in Rockford, which is about 6 miles away. Search it ourt and you'll be in for a real treat. A cozy pub, intimate with real ales and great "pub grub". Parking can be a nightmare if its busy. Have live music ( well Fred and his singing dog) some weekends.

Review of The Marlboro Club

the best venue in town 5*

this place started as a small club and is rapidly becoming a major venue in the uk. OK its a small venue, but when Demon Alban's "the Queen ..." group debut their new album at this place, you know it has something special. Watch out for the posters around town and sign up to their myspace to get the latest info. Big names AND flying the flag for local bands too.

Review of Roly's

22 Apr 08, 13:48

the best EVER 5*

Rolys is locally made ... and you can see it being made right there in the shop ( and we're not talking add water to a pre made mix like they do at Watermouth Castle) Real fudge made infront your eyes. Ask for a free sample before you choose your flavor too. If this stuff hasnt won any awards .. its a tragedy. Real fudge and a real treat .... expertly packed in boxes by people who know how to pack fudge.

Review of Embassy Cinema

is it the same place 5*

amazing that this is the same cramped flea pit of 10 years ago. after a much needed re-vamp, this cinema is a real gem. Small cimema, big screen. All the current movies and also some specialist screenings too. It also has a great bar facility so make a good intimate venue too!

excellent place 5*

if youve never had spanish food before try here. forget the main menu and just go for all the starters - you get a HUGE tapas selection. 4 of us went for valentines day and it was so good, we've now been several times ... always just the starters! If its a special occasion, have a look at the champagne cocktail range .... hell, i must go again soon.

Review of Golden Bay Restaurant Holiday Flats

Greasy Spoon! 5*

If you remember the days of greasy spoon cafes of the 70s ... you've gonna love this place. Run by two ladies who enjoy a laugh in that "saucy postcard" way . Great for fry ups during the day !! Doesnt really work as the upper crust restaurant it tries to be in the evening tho. Plastic table cloths, sauce in oversized squeezable tomatoes and ice cream floats .... long live this place.

local chemists are great, you can have a private chat with the Pharmacist who is normally as knowledgeable as the doctor! These guys are 2nd to none and I dread the fact that this place is soon to become another Boots.

this place is a welcome stop off along the Tarka trail. Home made soup, extravegent cakes, over generous portions and hot chocolate to die for ... hell, forget the tarka trail bit, just go there for a snack in the car, theres plenty of parking. Its on Fremington Quay, just look out for the brown tourist signs

Review of Exmoor Zoological Park

an absolute must 5*

I love this place, local friendly and they actually care about the animals. OK so this isnt Longleat, but theres pleant of chance to get up close and personal with Penguins, Parrots and creepy crawlies. Well worth spending an afternoon. Maily out doors so can be a bit open if its raining. The cafe is good too, cheap and cheerful. Make sure you have a chat with the staff and they may let you feed some of the animals.

they have moved 5*

yes they are no longer in Newport. They can now be found in Bear Street in Barnstaple. They are a great team of ladies who will accommodate both sexes. I like the fact that they will suggest hair styles that will suit me ... being a man I have no clue what i want, but I always leave feeling fab! You do need to book up about a week in advance, but give em a call and they will squeeze you in when they can. I tend to book me and the kids in at the same time ... saves taking them out for a treat.

Review of Rodd's Electrical

11 Apr 08, 17:38

forget Currys n Comet 5*

curry is a food, comet is a reindeer, so why would anyone buy anything electrical from them when you have a good local, well established electrical shop locally. Rodds have been around for years and quarantee to be cheaper than the big boys on most stuff. Fridges, TV, DVD, Sky, Cookers, Irons etc etc. And with Rodds, chances are you'll see the same assistant this week as you did last week - not like the revolving door of staff at Currys

A dwindleing kind of shop 5*

if your idea of listening to music is to hold ur mobile to your ear to hear the latest download ... you really wont appreciate what an amazing shop this is. HOWEVER if you know your woofers from your tweeters and you want a quality CD player, or a nice pair of speakers or maybe even a turntable, this IS the place. Still locally owned and run, this is the shop I would live in if i could. Sadly there have only ever been a few times in my life when I had the cash to make purchases, but with the purchases I made, they have given me years of enjoyment. This is real hifi, not the crap from Comet.

Suits You Sir 5*

This is the sort of shop my dad shops in. The staff are as old as the building and they know how a Gentleman shopper should be treated. The sort of shop that sells suits, ties, braces, handkerchiefs and sensible underpants. A real old fashiond gents outfitters. Gawd bless em and God Save the Queen. I think they do suit hire too.

Few of these left 5*

Its sad to say but shops like these are few and far between these days. This is a locally owned top mans shop for clothes shoes and accessories. You wont find mass produced crap in here. unique brands, top quality and re-assuringly expensive so no chance of seeing an army of local chavs wearing this gear thank god - they shop at Primark.

REAL Jewellers 5*

this family owned business has been around for about 100 years. Good quality OLD jewellery. Second hand and re-assuringly pricey. The staff have been there for as long as the shop has and I believe they do still make jewellry to order and do repairs on the premesis still. Always a pleaseure to visit and have a look around ... even if my purchases are few and far betweeen.

well this was a lovely little shop. was great to sample Polish foods and try something new. I would have thought it would have done well with so many Polish people in the area now. I guess Sainsburys have killed off another small business. Sad.

Local Radio 5*

All you need locally from a radio station. Local but not Yokel. Local news, local travel, local personalities. Great music from the 80s 90s and today. Although based at Roundswell, Lantern FM covers the whole (well almost) of North Devon from Holsworthy to Tiverton, and can also be heard on line at lanterfm.co.uk so you can listen anywhere in the world.

Review of Sainsburys

10 Apr 08, 15:35

its new! 5*

Its the only Sainsburys in the whole of North Devon. After a recent refit, the shop now boasts a huge floor space. the clothes department is bigger than previously, the electrical department has expanded and the entertainment section is bigger too. You know what to expect from this brand. Its a luxury food store. But remember there are other cheaper, local alternatives.

Long Established 5*

If u live locally you will know all about Pat Williams. The company has been around forever and will knock spots off of any of the big chains or any new boys. Always the best prices. Always great service. Nothing is too small for these guys - even the local garages buy from PW so he must be cheaper than the manufacturers prices lol.

100% 5*

GREAT beer, GREAT staff, GREAT food, GREAT accommodation. GREAT function room. So I like this place. Theres a huge selection of beers, ales as well as ur mass produced fizzy stuff. The staff are always good for a laugh and have a warm welcome. The food is basic but theres nothing bad about that, freshly cooked, tasty and no boil in the bag. The acomm is again basic, but hey its a pub with rooms , not a blinkin hotel.

this is an award winning chip shop. theres a huge eat in restaurant and also a thriving takeaway. The Cod is to die for, always tasty and the chips are REAL chips made from REAL potatoes , none of ur frozen rubbish. The staff are generally fun - but look out for the old geezer who does most of the cooking ... you'll see what i mean.

Review of Lynton & Barnstaple Railway Co

10 Apr 08, 14:48

History 5*

OK so this isnt British Rail ok. Its a group of local people with a love of railways who want to re-instate the old Lynton to Barnstaple line - frankly it'll never happen, but we can dream. this is a small piece of track that has been restored on the old route. Great as a tourist nostalgia trip, but dont expect to go anywhere except back to where you started from. Its an hour well spent, but not a whole day out.
