an odd place for this shop to be, but this shop has survived the on slaught of the cheapo furniture shop. it survived on a great reputation and great quality beds. Theres a great brand called Stressless from Econess, they are the main stockists in North Devon.

Review of Ruda Holiday Park

never stayed 5*

never stayed at Ruda, but regularly use Cascades ( the on site swimming pool ) . Its a great size family fun pool, with slides for the big kids and slides for the toddlers. Its an intergrated toddler and adult pool with rapids and fast water areas in the adult bit. All housed in the same pool but the toddler area is clearly defined and sectioned from the adult. Non residents of Ruda can also use the pool facilities. ONe criticism, the water is lovely and warm , but above water level the temperature can be cold and the walk from pool to changing rooms is bloody freezing!!

Review of Museum Of Barnstaple & North Devon

14 May 08, 23:14

i agree 4*

I agree with the reviews of this place already on here. about it being mainly Natural History.

However, there IS a great section on Branhams Pottery, a complete history of this once thriving business and you can find out all about Sir Rock , a wealthy business man who pumped much needed cash into the town.

You also need to keep an eye on the museums programme of events. Theres a constantly changing programme which adds extra "spice" to this great little museum.

we bought 4 4*

I wanted to get the kids new bikes and ended up getting new ones for all 4 of us. I must confess i was so surprised with the friendly staff that i felt completely at ease and trusted their advice. I had a figure in my mind for 2 bikes and ended up only paying a little more for four! That was because of not only good prices, but some deals on offer too.

odd that a shop of this type is on a business park location. Its just out of town so thats either a good thing ... or bad. Off the beaten track, but also in aquiet location so easy to park. Loads of stick ons for the card makers plus a huge range of everthing crafty - they even have coloured hair spray!

there are 2 of these in town, This branch has all the pet supplies ( no live animals). Review of Three Cooks

14 May 08, 13:41

Boil in the bag 2*

Three Cooks are a national company. Their "boil in the bag" approach to baking leaves a lot to be desired. The stuff all comes part cooked in boxes and the "bakers" throw the bread, pies and cakes into a pre heated oven and 20 mins later out comes the goods. I want a sausage in my sausage roll, not a line of sausage paste!

No where else 5*

No where else in Barnstaple sells cakes like these. They are huge. My fave is a choux pastry cake, stuffed with fresh cream and coated in coffee flavour icing. They do individual Strawberry Tarts too which are delicious. Freshly baked bread, fresh cream cakes, cookies. All fresh baked. Ask for RAY!!

BAD location 4*

Jam packed with what is really pop band tee shirts and and hoodies. This is actually a fab shop if you dont want your average chain store mass produced clothes. However, the location is a minus. Paiges Lane is hard to find and has very little foot fall. The shop would fly if the location was better. Great once you HAVE found it tho.

Expensive ... and thats a GOOD thing 4*

Parkhouse have been in Barnstaple for ages. Mark P , the founder, still works in the shop and still values jewellry. This guy basically deals in antique jewellry, from rings to necklaces. No cheap tat here, which is why it is still surviving i guess. Heres to another 50 years

Chain store 3*

Chain store jewellery at chain store prices. All chain store jewellers are basically the same. They buy loads, flog it cheap and everyone gets a deal. But, if you want something a bit better, you're limited in Hinds. Buying here, you also run the risk of everyone else having the same jewellry as you do.

give it 4 4*

I give it 4 because its my favourite clothes shop for men. Only thing i hate about this branch is that the ladies pay desk is half way on the shop floor, so whilse ur queueing to pay, theres a constant stream of parents and kids brushing past you on theire way to the kids department, which is at the back of the shop. If u have spare cash, always worth buying gift vouchers and waiting for the next Next sale.

Good for business 5*

I recently had to buy new staff uniforms and headed st8 for Primark. Its incredibly cheap and the quality is good. OK so the clothes wont last for more than a season, but hey a Polo shirt at £2.50 is so much cheaper than the £14.75 branded one I was offered by a local uniforms supplier. Plus, if they get damaged, at £2.50, i can just go and buy a new one.

only one complaint 3*

i love Mcdonalds, you know exactly what you are getting from the moment you walk in the door ... HOWEVER, even tho they TRY and cater for vegitarians, there are key times of the day when they have "run out" of the veggie option ( the roast veggi deli wrap is a prime example). I found it best to order the veggi option first, that way you know if they have it, THEN order the non veggi. That way you're not all eating while the veggie isnt.

... step back in time. This is a real Gentlemans shop. The phrase "suits you sir" springs to mind. Sensible shirts, sensible suits and sensible Y front pants. Like a scene out of "are you being served" you expect Mrs Slocombe to appear from being the huge glass counter and tell us about her "pussy". All that said, Its actually really nice to see this sort of traditional shop in town - my dad love it.

I am always drawn into this shop by the offers in the window. the only problem i have with this shop is the sizes. The largest size they do in clothes is XL, which in all other shops is ample for me. Suits You Sir 5*

This is the sort of shop my dad shops in. The staff are as old as the building and they know how a Gentleman shopper should be treated. The sort of shop that sells suits, ties, braces, handkerchiefs and sensible underpants. A real old fashiond gents outfitters. Gawd bless em and God Save the Queen. I think they do suit hire too.

Few of these left 5*

Its sad to say but shops like these are few and far between these days. This is a locally owned top mans shop for clothes shoes and accessories. You wont find mass produced crap in here. unique brands, top quality and re-assuringly expensive so no chance of seeing an army of local chavs wearing this gear thank god - they shop at Primark.

Whats Happening 2*

This is a great shop. An amazing collection of wierd and wonderful gifts that you geniunely wont find anywhere else. BUT whats happening to it ... it closed down a while back, only to re open a few months later. Last week i see its got closing down signs up again. ... so, not worth seeking out incase it has gone, but if ur in Boutport Street may as well have a look to see if they are still trading

Local Charity Shop 4*

I love this place. It has two departments. The retail shop where you can get the usual second hand items ( clothes, cds, dvds, books etc) and a furniture store where you can fit out a whole house with everything you could possibly need - tables , chairs, tv stands, wardrobes etc

a good shop 4*

I always manage to find something for the ladies of the family in here, Real womens sizes to the larger lady too. Reasonably priced quality clothes. Better quality than Primark, but not up to Next standards.

REAL Jewellers 5*

this family owned business has been around for about 100 years. Good quality OLD jewellery. Second hand and re-assuringly pricey. The staff have been there for as long as the shop has and I believe they do still make jewellry to order and do repairs on the premesis still. Always a pleaseure to visit and have a look around ... even if my purchases are few and far betweeen.

Ratners under another name? 2*

Hang on , remember what Gerald Ratner said about his jewellry? Well didnt Samuels just buy out Ratners and change the name? Nuff said. Cheap. Mass produced. The sort of jewellry you buy when you dont want to spend much cash, but you want someone to think you care.

If you cant find it here 4*

If you cant find it here, then go elsewhere. Thats what i do, i have a look in Bewise (although its not called that) see what I want then go get the rest somewhere else. If they have what u want, well you know it'll be quality but cheap! Clothes are great, but they also have a great houseware dept too for pillows , duvets, furniture etc.

tweed hats? 4*

No not anymore, you'd be surprised at what s in store these days. Gone are the tweed skirts, its now a place where middle aged women can shop and middle aged men dont feel out of place. worth checking the designer clothes at the Atlantic Village branch

Review of Chicago Rock Cafe

A Duck is A Duck 3*

Lets be honest. No matter how many facelifts you give a place, unless you do something fundamentally different to it , it will always be the same place. This venue ( drink as much as you can and get wrecked b4 the prices go up at 10pm) hasnt changed in the 3 name changes that its had in 4 years. Chicago rock was replaced by SHOUT and that has now become Glitterball. Its the same place, same small dance floor, same hatcheting of music by the DJs, same cheap happy hour offers.

Whenever I have been to this place its been fine, not great and not bad, just fine. The food is good, tastes ok to me, the service is speedy and the staff are friendly. However, I have friends that have said the'd never go there again.

Some table cloths doesnt make it posh 3*

this used to be Wimpy buger joint, not its Chatter Box. The decour really hasnt changed since the Wimpey days, the seats and the fixed to the floor tables are all still in place. It masquerades to be something its not. Its Wimpy without the burgers and some green table cloths. A bit more pricey than the average Barnstaple High Street Cafe.

"tally ho old chap" 3*

this place is a Yuppie's haven. After work drinks for the suited go getters of town. Have eaten there a few times ( not through choice ) and have always found the food pleasant. Never very much food and all a bit " arty farty". Food is pretty, but not filling.

Family Joke 1*

Now that the strand is potentially closed to cars, how on earth will this place survive?? I would like to say I have been there, but cant as its not in a part of town that people actually visit. such a bad location for an eatery. Infact whenever i have driven past it never seems to be open. As a family we take bets as to wether it EVER does

well this was a lovely little shop. was great to sample Polish foods and try something new. I would have thought it would have done well with so many Polish people in the area now. I guess Sainsburys have killed off another small business. Sad.

Its Closed Down 1*

No wonder it closed. They had no idea ... hot soup in the summer?? whats that about? Only time I went in there the staff were more interested in flicking eachother with rolled up towels and the manager was having his lega waxed. Very nice for a cafe. RIP Enjoy.

Traditional Barnstaple Pub 4*

A bit of Kareoke. Spit and sawdust. The "lads" are there waiting for someone to throw the first punch... bloody excellent place. Guaranteed to "pull a bird" or two on a friday nite. Beers cheap, squaddies love it, get hammered, pull a maid and grab a kebab from the takeaway next door .... sorted. Dont take the missus, leave the kids at home. Tight white t shirts essential.

Irish Pub 3*

A traditional Irish pub . well as long as traditional is shiney and new in a national chain defined "irish" way. You always know when youre in an "Oirish" pub because there's a typewriter on the ceiling and a bicycle tied to the wall .... just like all the pubs in Ireland have. Lets face it, this is just a pub that sells Guinness.

once upon a time pubs were dark and smokey .. surprisingly even after the smoking ban, this pub still IS dark and smokey ... always packed and full of locals, always dark and despirately in need of some new decor. A splash of pain would clear the smoke stained walls

these days pubs really do need to have something special to pull the crowds. This pub does always seem to have some sort of draw to it, but sadly there really isnt much to make you wanna walk across the bridge to pay a visit. The barmaid is really friendly, but these days, thats not eough sorry

Plenty of parking so u can drop the car off, do your shopping and come back to a job well done. Always have a laugh with the guys so its a friendly place to go. Prices are average, but the service is great.

an old haunt 4*

I must confess Ive not been here for a while. the food is excellent. the MArshal Burger is homemade, irregular shaped, fills a bun and is the best burger you will ever taste. I'm reliably informed that the real ales are good too. although I'm a wine man myself.
