Review of Lundy Office

A great voyage 5*

Book yer tickets here for a trip to Lundy Island. Lundy is 11 miles off the North Devon Coast and accessable by boat or helecopter. Boats ( MS Oldenburg) sail daily from Bideford and Ilfracombe. Its a unique isolated island with its own ruling body. The Marisco bar is a great place to have a bite to eat. If you wish to stay, some of the buildings are avaiable to hire too!

A Bit Hippy 4*

from the out side this looks like a Hippy Shop actually its a very nice independant ladies clothes shop. Unique and individual. Not your high street mass produced disposable clothes. Good quality, re assuringly not cheap, but realistically priced. Local shops like this ensure you wont be buying the same clothes that every Kylie and Chanelle have from Chavtastic NewLook.

never in 2*

Im all for small business but locally owned video shops are never up to scratch because they cant afford to invest in stock. if ur a video shop, you need more than 2 copies of the latest release. I can NEVER get what i want in here, its always already out - they only have in the stuff u saw at the cinema already or the stuff u tried to hire form tehn 6 months earlier

Review of Toyzone

its at Atlantic Village 3*

Not sure why the address is 30 cos its actually in Atlantic Village - lol. Toyzone is a huge shop full of non branded toys, dress up sets, cars, guns, hula hoops etc and toys that are well past the sell by date. Last years "must" have Batman figues - but the ones no one wanted to buy at the time. You wont get the main characters, but the minor role characters. Toyzone is a well known brand and theyare springing up all over the place.

we had some T shirts done too. it was for a stag doo, we all had the bridegrooms picture put on the front ( amazing u can do that from a photo) and his name in lettering. The T shirt is still going strong, but the prints came off after a few washes, but thats ok - they served a purpose and the price was average t shirt price.

They must have had a staff change cos the grumpy guy has gome. Its now a pleasant friendly shop to go into. Although the new location at the top of the high street is a pain as there is no easy parking and its on a very steep hill.

I guess these guys cater for the market they have. It was really hard to find a nice pair of leather work shoes in here. Plenty of plastic, but a very poor selection of leather. Infact the gents selection all round was lacking. Loads for ladies tho and a nice rance in novelty wellies and fluffy slippers

this local business has been around for years, they have several branches in North Devon. They survive because all the staff are keep photographers and know everything about cameras. Digital, 35m, Brownie ... they are experts on the lot. Cameras for sales and service too.

it is great that there is a unique individual clothes shop for blokes. Lots of stock and a great selection of jeans and tops. casual and smart casual. not cheap and luckily your average primark customer couldnt afford the good quality reassuringly pricey clothes in here - so you wont see every wayne, gaz or chav wearing what you've bought.

these guys will never be able to compete on price, with the shite stores like Currys or Comet. BUT luckily those stores are 10 miles away and this shop relies on the fact that its been here for over 40 years. Once just selling TVs now its an emporium of all things electric and still surviving.

Sorry to say there really isnt the clientelle in Nth Devon to support this kind of business. One can only assume they have a long list of clients from else where who use them and the shop is merely used for storage. Antiques of the highest quality ( wardrobes carrying price tags of 3 and 4 thousand pounds) and actually now situated in much larger premesis in MArket Street NOT on the Quay. Parking is a nightmare tho.

Allow a couple of hours 5*

Once you have found this place in Market street, you will know what a little gem this emporium is. Its so full, it spews out into the street. A real Aladdins cave of old stuff. Postcards, furniture, pictures, medals, stamps, spoons, books, 78s, gramophones, plates, if its collectable, its here. It will take you a good hour just to stand and look at all the trinkets and curios in the wall long glass cabinets. THEN when you've checked out the enormous floor space, head downstairs for a second floor of the same.

This started off as a small business and has spread accross North Devon. I really love the fact that they are carbon foot print conscious in that they source local produce and get it into their local shops, so cutting down on food miles. well done guys! the best fruit n veg in the county

HUGE! 3*

Right on the front by the Quay, this is actually a huge warehouse that is crammed with fruit and veg and flowers. The produce arrives daily in huge lorries so is always fresh. Good to pop in at the end of the day as thats when they often reduce the good that are coming to the end of shelf life - great if ur watching the budget.

Review of Sod'Em & Sing

one of the best 4*

Yep would book this guy every time. Great selection of discs so always something on the books to sing. Only ever seen him in action at events and never had to book him myself, so, I have no idea of his prices. However, Im of the opinion that the cost is irrelevent if you are hireing a fantastic entertainer.

Review of DJ Jude

is new years eve a good showcase? 2*

Have only seen this DJ perform once and I wasnt impressed. Huge crowd of people on New Years Eve waiting to be entertained and she fell well short. Totally the wrong music for a "party" crowd and unprofessional with the language bearing in mind there were kids at the event too.

Review of Bideford RFC

not a rugby fan 3*

Football is my game really, but have been to a couple of games at Bideford. Always a great friendly atmos. The club room is what you would expect, basic, cheap bar, toilets smell and normally packed after a game with the players sinking pints and flashing their knobs!

Review of Bideford Association Football Club

Im Bias 4*

Try my best to see Bideford play whenver i can. This club has a lot of family history for me as my uncle played for them back in the day and , now in his 80s, is still on the team ... ooops that should be on the board. the club house is a typical local football club bar - all beer mats and woodchipped walls. Good for budget priced wedding receptions and discos, good sized function room.

Review of Moss Pharmacy

Down Your Nose 1*

Why is it that Moss Pharmacy and LLoyds Pharmacy think they are superior. Sorry if this offends, but staff in this chemist tend to look down their noses at you. All I wanted was some E45 cream but I couldnt remember what its name was. The woman in there made me feel totally stupid.

Is It Still Open? 1*

Im not 100% SURE THIS IS STILL OPEN ...sorry about the capitals .. it certainly should NOT be included in the Chemist section. Its as tacky as a Pound shop. Ends of ranges, almost out of date groceries at cheap prices, unbranded toys, cheap tacky presents. Not a nice shop, infact im sorry now I disrespected the Pound shops by the comparison.

Nuts! 4*

Have worked with the Captain a few times now and he is a great kiddies entertainer. All thrown in there .. disco, party tricks, magic, and great interaction with the kids. He IS a kids entertainer and is brilliant at it. Not for adults. Well known in the area and always seems to be working so thats a good sign.

Keep it local 3*

As Dave has said, one visit and you're done really. Having said this, there is a regular programme of short stay exhibitions that visit the gallery. Best to keep an eye open in the local press to see whats coming up next. Free entry too so thats a bonus, but this strugggling gallery is always in need of monetary donations please

Review of Pizza Pronto

30 Apr 08, 11:45

thank god its not Pizza Hut 4*

Luckily this pizza place is a million miles away from the horrendous Pizza Hut. Always friendly staff and alway have what you want. Choose exactly what you want as your topping. Choose your base and it goes str8 into the over. Never tried home delivery, tend to go and get them myself. Parking can be a pain if theres a football match on tho as this is the closest car park to that end of Mill Street.

Oh! 3*

I really want this place to be awesome. I like going here, but thats as good as it gets .. I just "like" it. Its not stunning or excellent. Its just average. The food is OK, a bit pricey. The staff are good. The atmos is cosy and intimate. Upstairs there is a small bar where I believe they still do bigger party gatherings. Tappas is the speciality in the upstairs area. I love it, but it really isnt anything special.

really impressed 5*

we had an impromptu family gathering and about 12 of us descended on this place one evening. The restaurant itself wasnt busy until we got there and the staff were amazingly unperterbed that we had all arrived at once. My daughter is a vegitarian and although the veggie menu was limited, the chef actually came into the restaurant to chat with her to see what he could cook for her. it was a great night and my daughter felt really looked after. Amazing staff, fab food and incredible customer service

Oh Please Karen H 1*

Karen H ... Have you ever actually been to this dreadful place?? I've given them two chances and they failed misrably both times. First I eat in, my mum suggested we go there one evening. The food was bland and every course tasted the same. I hate plastic table cloths in a restaurant. Second time was for a takeaway, was cold by the time I got it home ( 10 mins drive) and again a brown mush in a tin foil box. Absolute pants.

so many are rubbish 4*

So many chicken joints try and be Kentucky Fried Chicken and fail miserably. This one doesnt try and puts K F C to shame. Always freshly cooked, always open for business and always a queue at the weekends. Very small seating area so they are mainly a take out joint. Good food good prices.

Ladies Please! 4*

Cattle market !! ?? Yes and every single bloke will be there at the weekend, sinking the pints of Heineken and chatting up the birds. Thats why this place was created ladies. To pull "birds". Accept it for what it is, the girls go there to pull, the blokes go there to pull, its cheap, cheesy and a bloody good night out.

Review of Mr Chips

The only plaice 4*

This really is the only decent place to go and have fish and chips in Bideford. They have a thriving take away business, but to sit down in the restaurant and eat freshly cooked Fish n chips is a real treat. If you're looking out for the restaurant ... remember BIG and YELLOW, you will soon find it!

Another Bideford place that needs a facelift 3*

The food is lovely. Freshly cooked and tasty. The staff are friendly and obviously enjoy their jobs. If only they would update the the decor and furnishings. the look of the place really does put you off eating there, which is a real shame as the food is srumptious.

Review of Wimpy

30 Apr 08, 10:58

Expected Better 2*

Sadly Wimpey restaurants seem to be dieing out. Theres now only two in North Devon. Unfortunately this branch is a shadow of its sister branch in Barnstaple. It sort of refects the general lack lustre of Bideford as a whole. It looks dirty and the tables have that "tacky" feel to them. The food is great, as you would expect from a burger chain, BUT the place needs updating.

Review of Ali's Charcoal Grill

Kebabs 4*

Yeah always make a b line for ali's after a night out on the beer. I love the fact that at 1am, these guys are still serving and still manage a laugh and a smile. Usual selection of Kebabs and chips etc . Be warned tho the Hot Sauce will blow your head to bits - and still hot next morning if u catch my drift.

See I LIKE the whole greasy spoon thing! A basic cafff, bit like the one in Eastenders!. Get yer fry up and a mug of tea. Beans on toast. Sandwiches. Just great! Unlike some other greasy spoon places in Bideford this one is actually CLEAN , which makes it 100% acceptable.

Remember the old coffe bars on the late 60s .. no neither do I, but Im sure this is one of them. Its the same decor that you see in old black and white movies. Plastic table cloths, cheap sauce in plastic tomatoes and chipped cups. Avoid, this is not a theme cafe .. its the best they can offer!

Not just Gay bar 4*

Huge area to fill which is great as at the weekends this pub \\\\ club \\\\ dancefloor is packed. Ive only ever been in here as part of a group on drunken nights out with the team from work. A great 2group2 place to go. Popular with the gay \\\\ lesbian community, but very str8 friendly! Cheesy disco. Prices steep, but great for the end of the night pub crawl.

Review of Tavern In Port

Get used to it 3*

I have never found this place anything more than somewhere to pop into for a drink, when on your way to somewhere else. It has 2 (maybe 3??) bars on different levels. Have eaten here and the food was actually very good. Traditional pub grub, mass produced served on a plate with some garnish. Reasonably priced. Limited beers but well stocked spirits .

Review of First In Last Out

Oh please 2*

If your idea of a great night out involves a sticky carpet and smelly toilets, this is the place for you. From the outside it looks tacky and on the inside, the outside doesnt disappoint. Ive only been there once and that was enough - the wedding reception from hell - oven ready voul-e-vents and puff pastry sausage rolls .. classy.

Review of Quigleys Custom House

30 Apr 08, 10:18

Tu be Sure 4*

An Irish pub that is not part of a corporate chain! This pub is right on Biderofd Quay and is part of the rat run of pubs in the town. Always a great place for a bite to eat - and yes the DO do Guiness and Steak pie. Generous portions too. The pub maintains the village local atmosphere as it is a warren of nooks and crannies where you can have a pint (of Guiness) and a chat. The upstairs area doubles as a disco at the weekends - not sure about the pole dance poles up there tho lol

Review of Blacksmith Arms

Food is Great 4*

This pub is a bit off the bbeaten rat run of bideford pubs. Its actually the East the Water side of the old bridge in a small street. Its the sort of pub you head for , then stay in. The food is exceptionally good. What I'd call tradional pub grub. My wife works for a local clothing company and they have their staff Christmas parties here every year. cheap but GREAT food ....

roomy and modern 4*

Once a dingy dive, now a refubished shiny and new pub for Bideford town centre. You can feel a bit lost if its not busy, but it doent take lonf to fill up at the weekends. Huge bar, well stocked and the bar staff are fun and fast so you get served very quickly. Great for a night out in a group.

Pleasant surprise 4*

I was literally dragged along to this pub one drunken night. Now I wish I'd gone there ages ago. Hard to find but well worth it. There was live music on the night I went - some randon folk evening and we thoroughgly enjoyed ourselves. The staff were friendly, the beer was real ale, but the food was a bit bland. Proably deadly on a non music night tho.

Review of Bideford Carpet Centres

How Long Can They Go On 4*

I wonder how much longer this business will survive. With so many " carpet warehouses" locally it must be hard to keep attracting new business. The shop has changed over the years, still selling quality carpets and floor coverings, but now also stocking random "gifts". Does this show a slippery slope developing?

Review of Devonshire Pine

Pine! 4*

Its great that these local firms survive when everyone else sells pine. I guess their reputation locally has helped them to survive .. The factory is HUGE, the selection of everything Pine is incredible. Have a look around the show room at Caddedown its jam packed. My ONLY criticism is that when I was looking around, the show room was so large that I couldnt find anyone to help me. I ended up leaving without buying anything. HOWEVER, I knew what I wanted and went back another day, when there was someone there to help.

from little acorns 4*

I remember the day when Darren was a sparky with a sack full of tools! Now look at this business, not only one of the main electrical contractors in the area, but they have a beautiful lighting retail outlet at Pitt Lane. Amazingly Darren still heads the team and still offers a great service. Great that this business is still trading. If they are good enough for Bideford Football Club , thats good enough for me!

Scrap Car Amnesty 4*

These guys currently have a car amnesty. If you need a car disposing off (scrapping) these guys will do it for free of charge. They also take care of the paper work needed to declare the vehicle as being scrapped. Also I am very grateful to them for helping me re start my battery drained truck when I had a flat battery! And they did it free of charge!
