Review of Somerfield Stores

11 May 08, 19:45

Hmmm 3*

It always puts me off when the staff are stood out side smoking a fag! This Somerfield is far too small, relocation would make it bigger and better and probably more successful. Usual selection of provisions from a superstore that is not renowned for its standing in the Supermarket league table.

Review of Toy Zone

11 May 08, 19:42

Toys for boys .... and girls 4*

I love toyzone .. you can never go in and buy what you want, but you can always find something. If you are looking for the latest fad in the toy world, dont look in Toyzone. In here you will find basic toys - race tracks, cars, dollies, lego. Things to colour, things to colour with. Balls, Games jigsaw puzzles. TY bears. Its agreat little shop and the staff are fun too.

Review of Ferry's Home Hardware

11 May 08, 19:37

dont get this in bnq 4*

the Home Hardware brand seems to be a strong and reliable brand for small hardware stores these days. I love these little shops like a scene from a Ronnie Barker show, this shop is crammed packed with everything from washers and screws to lawn movers and hedge trimmers. No need to travel to bple what u need will be in here ... somewhere, as long as they can find it lol

Review of S & G Carpets

11 May 08, 19:32

nice fit 5*

ive know Gary for years so can say with confidence he is one of the best at his trade. Carpet prices easily compete with the likes of the big boys and gary and his team of fitters are very professional. You wont be dissapointed by the standard of the fitting and the guys clean and clear up as they go along, leaving minimal mess.

Review of Barley Grove Service Station

11 May 08, 19:27

no choice 4*

its the only petrol station on town so they do have the monopoly. Its a BP garage so you WILL pay over the odds for petrol and diesel. Annoying that they charge to air and water! Theres a small shop on the side of the garage which is typicallyover priced. its not 24 hr so dont get caught out.

Review of L A Wash & Dry

11 May 08, 19:24

all the same 3*

Imagine the laundry on Eastenders ... got it? Well here it is. I must confess I have only ever used this place once when my machine broke down. Was able to wash and dry and had fun people watching the varied selection of locals rushing by the window. Would use it again, clean, tidy and the machines were so very easy to use. Nice one

Review of Vision On Video Hire

11 May 08, 19:19

Sorry but .. 2*

I hate to dis local shops but this really isnt up to scratch. The few times I tried to use this shop, I was very disappointed. They had a really poor selection of movies. They few that I did want to hire - the more current ones - were already out on load and the guy couldnt tell me when they would be back in. I ended up travelling into Barnstaple and going to Block Busters. i dont think this shop will be around much longer , if indeed it still is!

Review of Greenfingers

11 May 08, 19:16

amazing selection 5*

I love the fact that this is the only shop you need for flowers. We stopped off on mothers day to buy a simple bunch of daffs. I bought a huge bunch of African (???) Lillies for my wifes birthday. Red roses for Valentines. Floers for funerals. Just a bunch or a huge floral display. thing is theres always something different on show that makes you stop of and buy, even tho you'd told yourself " i wont buy flowers today"

Review of Devonshire Soup Co

11 May 08, 19:10

local soup yum 4*

ideal for a cold winters day. all the soup is locally made on the premesis and they do some amazing flavours. Why would anyone want to buy a tin of Heinz tomato when you can have this freshly made. Fresh produce, little or no preservatives. It doesnt last too long once its been opened, but hey you will NOT want to save some till later - greedy.

Review of Farm Fresh Butchers

11 May 08, 19:04

on the tin 4*

does exactly what it says on the tin. the butchers know their stuff which is great because they cut the the joints you want, rather than pre determined by someone in head office. A lot of the stuff, ham, suasages, bacon is cut for you there and then so u can have as much or as little as you want. Great to see the butchers handling their meat too... a fine sight to see the carcases being chopped and manipulated by a specialist. Meat is sourced from local farms too.

Review of John Patt's

11 May 08, 19:00

cant beat em 5*

you cant beat Jon Patts locally. They supply all the fresh fruit for the hotel trade, the restaurant trade and all the cafes and pubs in between. SO they are damn good. Always busy so might be a few mins to get served. Great that tey try and source local produce to sell as well which is great for the locall economy. Lovely little chain of locla shops right across nth devon

Review of Fresh N' Fruity

11 May 08, 18:58

A shopping experience 4*

I deliberately leave the fruit n veg till last when shopping ... simply because you need to allow extra time to visit this place. The staff are so lovely (no disrespect when I say a bunch of lovely old dears with strong Devonshire accents) that they want to engage you in conversation. It can take ages to get served, but they are so appologetic and chatty that you really dont mind. Great selection of frut n veg including locla produce

Review of Happydays Late Shop

11 May 08, 18:54

Happydays 3*

Well at least the staff in here are friendly! Happydays - what brand IS that? Stocked with unkown brands and own lables and opens late too so ideal for those " danm i have no bread for the kids packed lunch" moments at 10 at night. Nothing special, but serving the community with a smile.

Review of Spar

11 May 08, 18:51

aaaarrrggghh 3*

Hey the grumpy staff are here too! Yep as with all Londis, Costcutters and Spar shops this one comes with the obligatory unhelpful, grumpy staff. Also the usual "offers" that you dont actually want ( who in hells teeth wants cheap Spar plastic bread on offer when for a few pence more you can get real bread), un fresh fruit n veg and cheapo brand yoghurts ... Thank goodness theres a Tesco on the way!

Review of Londis

11 May 08, 18:47

but thats bad 3*

my visit was exactly what i expected. There must be some thing about the staff in Londis, Spar and Costcutters. Are they specially trained to be sullen and unhelpful? As some point the objections to Tesco in Torrington will cease and the good folk of Torry will get a decent food shopping experience in town ... i hope the days of this sort of abomination are short lived

Review of Mole & Haggis

11 May 08, 18:44

awesome 5*

theres a smell of history that hits you when you open the door to this shop. This shop wouldnt be out of place in Diagon Alley ( Harry Potter). It really is an old fashioned book shop, even the guy behind the counter dresses in waistcoat , shirt and tie, all adding to the ambiance of the place. One final treat , just like in the olden days, when you have purchase your book, the owner lovingly wraps the book in plain brown paper and hands it over.

Review of Plough Arts Centre

11 May 08, 18:35

A Charity 4*

You never know what to expect here .... and that is a problem with this place. They need to find a successful way to promote what is happening here. They often have great art performances and live shows here from artists you would not expect to come to Nth Devon. BUT their publicity is rubbish and that results in half empty shows a lot of the time. Cast your net wider than Torrington people of the Plough!

Review of Torrington Museum

11 May 08, 18:31

small but prefectly formed 3*

as with all small museums, this one is average. With Dartington Crystal being a main attraction in Torrrington, the bulk of the content of the museum is about that very place. With Dartington Crystal not being too far away, you can actually find out all about it at the factory. Sorry if that seems negative. In actual fact, its a lovely little museum, cram packed with Torrrington history and memories ...

Review of Torrington 1646

11 May 08, 18:27

1646 5*

was a very significant date in the Torry callendar. This small village plays a huge part in Britains history. You will find out why in this living exhibition. Using a mixture of live acting, static displays, sound and visual trickery, you actually LIVE this experience. Its sort of a small version on the London Dungeons, but a lot less bloody! Well worth a visit with the family ... good to bear in mind for a rainy day!

Review of Maya

11 May 08, 18:22

Really lovely 4*

On the night we went, we really did not expect the welcome we got. We were treated like royalty , the staff were so friendly. Will deffo go again at some point, worth the drive to Torry. They also do take away. I have never tasted such lovely food. Although it was a little slow to arrive, it was obviously freshly cooked and well worth the wait.

Review of Browns

11 May 08, 18:18

WOW 4*

I was surprised to see how packed this shop is. Stocked from floor to celiling with all you need from a delli. They recently started stocking fresh olives which i love. Great cheese selection as well. Good selection of allergy cheeses (u know what I mean - faddy eaters can get cheese here that wont kill them)

Review of Cafe Theatre

11 May 08, 18:14

Its ok 3*

Sorry cant say anything more than its OK. Exactly what you would expect from a cafe .... teas and coffees, soft drinks and reasonably priced food. Not much of a veggie selection tho ... tuna sandwiches and cheese sandwiches .. not much really. Generally OK

Review of Taffs Fish & Chips

11 May 08, 18:11

A Choice of 2 4*

There are 2 chippies in Torry and its hard to decide which is best. Ive given this one higher stars simply because of its better location - on the square. The shop looks nicer and the staff are friendlier, but hey, both do a decent portion.

Review of Kia Ora Takeaway

when in torry 4*

Hard to find a better chippy in Nth Devon. This is only a take away so if ur hungry you need to walk as you eat! Delicious Fish n chips and ask for them open and the friendly staff will keep them open for you. Parking is hard outside the shop, but if ur lucky you can park on the street

Review of West Of England Inn

Room outside 3*

one of many good pubs in Torry. If its a nice day you can sit outside of this pub. No food on offer the night I went, but was easy enough to find a pub that did after one drink in th eplace

Review of Royal Exchange

11 May 08, 18:02

Looney? 4*

Well what would you expect from a place that is run by a member of the Monster Raving Looney Party. Seriously! This pub is loud and always packed. Food is great traditional pub food. Bar is well stocked, but you will find jam packed weekend nights. No parking as such so park in one of the many car parks in town
