Review of Hi Fi Repair Shop

06 May 08, 00:59

They Will Repair Your Hi Fi 4*

As you might expect this shop specialise in fixing broken hi fi equipment and they successfully mended my CD player which had a circular leather coaster jammed in the drawer mechanism. It was as good as new after they fixed it and I will not let my curiosity get the better of me in the future.

Review of Thrift Shop

06 May 08, 00:57

Cheap 5*

"Thrifty" is apparently Scottish slang for someone who is tight fisted which is probably why this shop gets its name. It's amazingly cheap and you can find some real bargains in here whether you're "thrifty" or normal. It's all in aid of charity as well which makes it even more of a good idea.

Review of Ndebele Take Away Food Shops

Unpronouncable 4*

It may be impossible for us to pronounce the name of this take away shop but the food is certainly easy to get your mouth around and they excelled themselves with my chips which were fried very well and a lovely golden brown.

Review of The Orange Shop

06 May 08, 00:53

Limited Reception 2*

I asked for Vodafone to see what they would say and they were quite rude to me. I think I proved my point though - they will only sell you Orange mobile phones in this shop so if you are expecting some balanced advice forget it, it's like asking Tony Blair which party to vote for.

Review of Edinburgh Dolls House Shop

Little Houses 4*

It gives you a weird feeling of being a giant when you see all these little dolls houses - they are perfect in every way the you can look inside them. I wish I had children because then I would have an excuse to buy one of these however I left empty handed. This is a brilliant shop which will enchant you!

Review of MC's Barber Shop

06 May 08, 00:49

Excellent Hair Dressers 5*

This was my favourite hair dresser during my weekend in Edinburgh - they let you have a free glass of water while you have you hair cut and they also have a wide and varied amount of subjects to talk to you about. The quality of my haircut was superb although my hair was already quite short they tidied it up a lot and it was extremely cheap.

Review of Sicilian Pastry Shop

Sicilly Not To 4*

You should definitely check this place out if you are in Edinburgh. I had my lunch here and they did a mean pastry. OK so Sicilian isnt the most Scottish thing but it seems to fit in nicely in this bohemian cultural melting pot.

Review of Bernies Barber Shop

06 May 08, 00:45

First Clas Haircuts 4*

I get my hair cut quite often - I really enjoy the sound of the scissors snipping away and this place made me feel right at home. I also like the Scottish accent and the combination of my hairdressers lilting Scottish voice and the snippety snip snip made me almost fall into a trance but I snapped out of it so I didnt end up Van Goghed! Great haircut at the end of it all and I cant complain about the prices which were very reasonable indeed.

Newsagents that does what newsagents do 4*

You dont need me to tell you what this shop sells - but I will do anyway. They specialise in newspapers. Shocker. The guy behind the counter was lovely though and had a really convincing Scottish accent. He explained all about the best places to go in Edinburgh and gave me directions too. Recommended.

Review of The Charity Shop

06 May 08, 00:41

Helping a Good Cause 4*

It's important to support local charities and this shop sells a lot of things for local good causes. In fact some of the items are pretty worthless, like ZX Spectrum computer game cassettes and the free CDs you get with Sunday colour supplements, however they do price them realistically at mere pence. My idea - buy a handful of this stuff and help a good cause then discretely pop it in the bin round the corner. You'll clear their stock, help a good cause and feel good about yourself. Try and recycle what you can.

Review of The Bethany Shop

06 May 08, 00:38

Help Bethany 3*

Bethany is a local charity in Edinburgh which is a good enough reason for me to frequent this shop. They sell a lot of random things from clothes to books and games, some as cheap and 20p or even 15p. So you would be crazy not to buy something even if you didnt think you wanted it.

Review of PJ's Barber Shop

06 May 08, 00:37

Smells 2*

Unfortunately while I was siting down waiting for my haircut a large man in a kilt standing over me broke wind in my face and I felt so sick I had to make my excuses and politely leave so I never found out how good their haircuts are. Hold your breath if you are going here because I'm sure they wouldnt have been able to get rid of that smell completely.

Review of The Little Bead Shop

06 May 08, 00:31

Little Beads 4*

The beads may be small but so is the shop. So its unclear whether the double meaning of the name of the shop is intentional. They do however also sell slightly larger beads but the common theme is they all have the holes in them to allow them to be easily threaded onto a necklace or anywhere else you might want to put beads. Fantastic choice, and good staff.

Review of Mackintosh's Barber Shop

06 May 08, 00:23

Hair Brained Scheme 3*

It's nothing unusual until you get inside and then you realise that there is something a little unusual about this place. It's a little bit too tidy and the magazines dont look like anyone has read them before. That was enough to warn me not to get my hair cut here and I walked straight out again with no explanation. I suggest you do the same.
