Review of Smugglers Cottage Of Tolverne

15 May 08, 12:54

Beautiful location 4*

Smugglers cottage will forever be in the history books as an embarkation point for the D-Day landings.

Whether you're interested in its history or not, this is a beautiful thatched cottage, right on the water of the river Fal that doubles as a restaurant in the Summer, serving cream teas to enjoy in the gardens.

Parking can be a bit of a nightmare as the road to the cottage is thin and winding, so I would highly recommend getting there by boat. The cottage has its own jetty and you can pick up boats in Falmouth or Truro, which take in all the scenery on the way.

Its the perfect way to spend a Summer afternoon.

Review of Five Degrees West

Is it a bar or is it a pub? 4*

I like this place. The steep staircase to get to it, can be a little offputting at the end of the day, but it's well worth the climb.

This has a All Bar One feel to it, but with local dishes on the menu at reasonable prices and the staff are friendly.

There's a nice little patio at the front and back as well.

It's a good venue for catching up with friends in a relaxing atmosphere.

Review of Mill Hill East Station

More passengers, less service 1*

It amazes me that after building a new housing estate, a supermarket and gym next to the station and more passengers using it than I have ever known, that the service has got worse.

In the evenings and outside of peak hours in the day a shuttle service to finchley central is now in place. The ticket office is also now barely open.

It's unsual to come across such a pretty and old fashioned tube station. Let's hope the service doesn't eventually stop.

Review of Somerset House

18 Apr 08, 22:26

Seasonal fun 4*

This is a beautiful location for concerts in the summer and a good chance to see well-known artists in an intimate venue.

They also have summer outdoor screenings of classic films, but my favourite has to be the ice rink in the winter, the best outdoor rink in London.

Review of La Tasca Restaurant

18 Apr 08, 22:23

Enjoyable 3*

I didn't have great expectations for this restaurant when trying the tapas for the tenner deal.

It wasn't the best tapas I'd had, but it also wasn't the worst. It does what it says on the tin and is what I'd expect from a chain. Good value for a quick lunch.

Review of Nandos

18 Apr 08, 22:19

More than the usual Nando's 4*

This is Nando's with a difference. The food is the same but the location really makes it.

The restaurant is underground but roomy and has a quirky layout. If you're there with a party there are private booth areas tucked away allowing privacy. Perfect for a celebration.

Review of Zen CX

A favourite with an uncertain future 4*

I would normally avoid a buffet at all costs, but this has become a favourite for family nights out.

At around £12 per person, it's good value, with both buffet choices and stirfry cooked to order.

It will be a shame if this does have to close as part of the Oriental City development, but hopefully it will find a new location.

Review of Soho Theatre and Writers Centre

18 Apr 08, 22:07

Worth checking out 3*

This theatre doesn't get much publicity, despite it frequently having well-known comics.

It has some mainstream acts, but quite often the shows are new up and coming acts.

The tickets are reasonable, so it's worth checking out.

If you're going to a show that may have audience participation though, watch where you sit. The theatres are quite small!

Review of Scotts Sandwich Bar

18 Apr 08, 22:02

Worth the queue 4*

This isn't the cheapest place to get a sandwich in covent garden, but it's worth paying the extra as the food is so nice.

The staff address you by name and are always cheery.

The food is fresh and the cakes are to die for.

My only warning is that if you are having a jacket potato, make sure you're very hungry, they're huge!

Review of Italian Graffiti

18 Apr 08, 21:56

A pleasant surprise 3*

I'd walked passed this restaurant many times, without even realising it was there, so I was surprised to get a recommendation from a friend.

The food was lovely and the setting inside was nice for a gathering. The menu has the usual italian classics but with some unusual but tasty additions.
