Review of Warwick Arts Centre
28 May 08, 19:18
Fun
This is the largest Arts Centre outside of London and is located in University of Warwick's leafy campus. Don't be fooled though, it's not in Warwick, it's in Coventry.
If you're a student you use it mainly to buy books from the great book shop, to walk through, and to sit exams.
As a normal person there are 3 rooms that put on shows and have diverse productions from opera, to comedy, to theatre. The cinema is also really great for indie movies and oddities.

Review of Dim T
30 Apr 08, 01:42
Yum
Another branch of the London chain of Dim T. We occasionally go to this one if we don't want to go into the West End.
I think the staff are more efficient here but the menu is the same so expect dim sum and noodles.
My favourite combination is thick rice noodles with chicken and the 'healthy' topping. Try it!

Review of Dim T
30 Apr 08, 01:41
Yum
I love this dim t restaurant. If you fancy chinese food but with a twist then this is the place to be.
Dim sum wise I'm a big fan of chicken & asian greens and you get about 3 portions in each dish so we normally order 5 dishes between 2.
Then onto the mains, there are a few normal dishes like crispy duck, green thai curry salads etc, but the majority of people go for the stir fry option. Choose your meat, noodles, and topping and away you go. Portions used to be huge but have shrunk recently.
Only problem is that service can be quite slow so if you're short of time probably best to give it a miss.

relax
If you're having your hair done in Harrods, you know it's not going to be a bad job. But watch out - only go here when you feel rich.
As well as hair cuts you can get beauty treatments like manicures and massages which is good, and there's often space on the day so if you get really hacked off with shopping you can just pop off for a massage brill!

Review of Topshop
30 Apr 08, 01:30
Shop
This is either amazing or a nightmare depending what type of mood you're in. It's always busy and it is massive so you can actually forget where you were a few minutes ago to find a top again if you haven't been there before.
There's a cafe in the basement and toilets free for anyone to use. Unusually for a top shop there is a whole floor of concessions with small outlets for up and coming designers which is great.

Review of Urban Outfitters

Shop
Smaller than the Oxford Circus branch, the range in this UO is obviously not as big but is still great. The main difference is the size of the vintage area.
Clothes are of a really high quality, but the price reflects that. The turnaround of styles and designs is also pretty quick.

Boozey
This is a large Scream pub on Euston Road close to both Kings X and Euston and so good for meeting people from the station.
Standard Scream fare - cheaper drinks with a yellow card, pool tables, quiz machines, footy on the tv and reliable but unhealthy food.
I like it in there though despite leaving my student days far behind.

Review of Dogma Bar
30 Apr 08, 01:08
Good
This is a huge 3 floor bar in Lincoln that you could use as an early doors bar, or a full night experience. I'm told they also do great lunch food.
We went on a Saturday night when there was a small 5 minute queue outside. Inside was really full and it felt a little bit like we were getting pushed about a bit. There's a massive outside area at the back which will be great for summer.
Drinks seemed quite cheap - a 4 drink round costing about £11.

Review of Tootsies
30 Apr 08, 01:04
Good food
If you want to eat somewhere reliable then Tootsies is a good choice and better than the nearby burger bar.
Set on the front in the wharf area there's a nice view and it's a good place to hang out in the summertime. It feels quite new and the staff were nice and friendly.
We ate burgers which were good and also had a 'healthy' platter to start for £8 which was huge. It had flatbreads, humous, red pepper humous, feta cheese and huge olives and was enough for about 4! Recommended.

Review of Sakura
30 Apr 08, 00:55
Fun dancing
Sakura is a medium sized nightclub in the centre of Lincoln with a Japanese theme. We went on a Saturday where the price was £4 before 12 and £6 after. Dress code seemed to be anything really - got in in jeans and trainers but most people were dressed up.
It's quite dark inside. The is a light up dancefloor section, a bar area with lots of seats and a long vip section we couldn't get in. The cloakroom was good and cost £1.
Musically - it was all a bit random but mainly new chart stuff with a dance edge, although it did seem to go Soca every 30 mins or so. We danced to the likes of T2, Estelle, Utah Saints, September etc...

Review of CellarDoor
20 Apr 08, 18:44
Neat
A disused public toilet has been gutted and transformed into a glitzy underground basement bar.
We went on a Saturday night and it wasn't too busy so it's a good place to start your night if you're in that area and don't want tourists.
Drinks are very expensive though and the music was a tiny bit ropey. They had a playlist system which got taken over by a DJ at about 9.30 but this seemed quite pointless as the DJ was just playing the same music!

Review of Bloomsbury Bowling Lanes
18 Apr 08, 02:11
bowl
This is a really fun place to go with friends. Formerly an underground car park of a hotel, it's been transformed into a retro american style bowling alley.
BUT it's so popular that booking a lane is terribly hard - you have to book weeks in advance, particularly for weekends. In addition there are fun karaoke rooms, a table football table and an american diner.
Drinks are amazingly cheap and their white russians are lush!

Shop
This is a great department store - the Selfridges of Cardiff if you like. It was also the store used in Doctor Who where Rose used to work before meeting the Doctor.
I really like the food court section, they stock a lot of unusual produce and the sales assistants were really lovely. My only problem was finding a toilet, they are quite far apart in this large store.

Review of Williamson Tunnels
18 Apr 08, 02:00
brown sign adventure
We randomly followed a brown sign to this tourist attraction and had a great time. Basically it's a big underground maze of tunnels that was built under edge hill for no apparent reason.
A tour guide takes people round about every 30 minutes so you may have to wait in the cafe until the next tour. Then you can don a hard hat and go on your tour, being filled in on lots of interesting stories by the guide.
Fun & quite quick!

Review of Dream Bags Jaguar Shoes
18 Apr 08, 01:46
Booze
Great bar. It gets it's name from the bag & shoes store that used to be in this spot. They just gutted the inside and turned it into a bar.
Feels like a bar in Berlin more than London. There are two floors and the lower floor is darker and a bit more normal than the quirky looking top floor.

Review of Bar Kick

Don't spin!
If you're one of those people who loves spinning some handles and knocking a tiny wooden ball about (and who isn't) Bar Kick is a great place to go.
Situated in Shoreditch, your nearest tubes are either Old Street or Liverpool Street.
There are about 8 table football tables and they do get very busy. I think you can book them in advance though which is great if you know when you're going.

Booze
This is a pretty swanky looking venue about 10 minutes walk from Old Street. It's got gorgeous lighting and a great layout with two floors and lots of bars.
Cocktails were lovely although expensive but the bars were stocked with all the upmarket spirits and enough staff to not leave you waiting for ages.

Flicks
This is a great cineme in the West End catering for an artier crowd than the Leicester Square big screens. Films shown tend to be indies or foreign and attract an intelligent crowd.
As well as a glorious cake cafe upstairs, you can buy beer from the downstairs bar and take it into the screening rooms. The seats are comfy also.

Review of Genesis Cinema
18 Apr 08, 01:16
Flicks
An independant cinema in the heart of the east end, The Genesis feels a bit like a relic from another age. There's loads of random space in the venue some of which is just shut bars and it's as if, once upon a time, this was a whole day out for people.
Best thing is indeed the price and particularly Wacky Wednesdays when it's half price. Hooray.
Always have a good range of current blockbustery films on.

Review of Two Floors

Drink me.
This is a nice meeting place just behind Regent Street. As the name suggests there are two floors, the bottom one is quite beach bar stylee.
It's always pretty busy and although being moderately expensive the drinks are really big which is always good.
Normally quite a pretty clientele.

Review of Belgo Restaurant

Yum
I love Belgo's. If you're not inspired and just want good hearty food then it's the place to go.
It's Belgian themed and the staff are randomly dressed in monks robes. There's a huge range of beers and briliant schnapps sticks where you can get up to 48 shots of schnapps in a big line!
Food is mainly meats, and fish. Probably not great if you're a veggie. I love the mussels and the croquettes. The steak is often overcooked though.

Good
This is a great pizza express. It's pretty big so there's lots of seats and you don't often have to wait for a table even though it's in the heart of a shopping centre.
You get a great view out of the window and I've never had a bad pizza here.

Review of The Astoria
16 Apr 08, 02:04
Listen
It always feels a bit like The Astoria is crumbling and covered in filth but it's a very popular gig venue.
If you're not bothered about being in touching distance of a band and feel a bit old, my tip would be to go upstairs and get a good table. Then you can sit all night and enjoy a great view. There are lots of bars to keep you fluid also.
It also hosts the tired and predictable G-a-y night which may get great acts due to it's corporate status, but doesn't exactly play the best music. Go to wig out at ghetto instead.

Films
This is a really popular and well located cinema in Angel in the N1 centre.
I get round the expense problem by buying standby tickets on lastminute.com. This allows you to get tickets to any show for £4.50 each. It's brilliant and works Mon to Thursday.
This cinema always has lots on and has many screens. Upstairs they occasionally have a film quiz and a large confectionary counter including a ben & jerrys.

Carumba
This is a very popular place at the moment in Covent Garden. We went for dinner at 8.30, however were unable to get a table until 9.30. You can't book ahead so be prepared to wait - the man looking after tables did actually seem to know what he was doing though.
Two of us shared the street food dish. It's basically mexican food served in tapas style. I really enjoyed the steak tacos and chicken roles. The nachos and black beans on the side were also great.
A huge mango sorbet for dessert is enough to share between two. And the margarehitas, although small, were lovely.

Review of Rio Cinema
16 Apr 08, 01:39
Ace
Dalston's very own cinema. It's a far cry from the massive chain cinemas and is as far as I know independant.
What they show reflects this as they tend to avoid the big Hollywood blockbusters and show more off centre films.
Don't expect a huge screen though, as Lizzie says expect everything in cute proportions.

Review of Zetter The Restaurant

Poached
A large restaurant which accompanies a hotel in Clerkenwell. I've only been here for breakfast but the space is very well presented and the staff treat customers with respect and are very polite.
Prices are on the high end with an english breakfast coming it at about £13. That said the food was very nice and they managed a perfect poached egg.

Review of The Breakfast Club
16 Apr 08, 01:26
Yum
A larger version of the Soho cafe, the Angel Breakfast Club does much more than sandwiches and breakfasts!
Food is well presented and has always tasted good. It's a really nice place to go for lunch although the tables feel quite rammed in.
The walls are themed with 80s movie posters (to match the name) and the smoothies are similarly named but with songs. I've enjoyed the Blue Monday many a time.
This Breakfast Club also has an alcohol license and an evening menu although I've not tried these personally.

Review of Little Georgia Restaurant
16 Apr 08, 01:23
Yum
Broadway market is about 15 minutes walk from Bethnal Green tube but worth it. Little Georgia doesn't look like much from outside but it's worth a visit. The food is unusual for our tastes but I really like the kharcho which is a hearty lamb stew type thing.
Bad points - no alcohol license.

Review of LMNT Restaurant
16 Apr 08, 01:18
Crazy yum
This place is crazy. I don't really want to describe why as it will ruin the fun. But you must go and check it out.
It's not in a very handy location. About 15 minutes walk from either Kingsland Road or Hackney Road, not really near any tube station. Outside it looks like a run down dump, but trust me and go in.
I've only been for Sunday lunch but it was very good value at about £8 with all the trimmings. The staff are friendly but it's all worth everything for the general look and music playing! Go!
Plus on Sunday night's you'll need to book as they have live opera. Mental.

Review of Scrooges Wine Bar
16 Apr 08, 00:50
Drink
A blackpool tradition, Scrooges 'Wine Bar' is an upstairs bar slightly away from most of town.
It's styled as if you are in Charles Dicken's victorian times and it's full of a slightly alternative clientele.
Drinks are cheaper than the mainstream bars but be warned it can often have quite young people inside.

Review of Ping Pong Dim Sum
16 Apr 08, 00:48
Yum
Ping Pong is a chain restaurant serving Dim Sum. Sure it might not be particularly authentic but it's mighty yummy.
This branch is always very busy, so be prepared to wait for a table. There are two floors and you may be sat on a large round table with others, a bar area or your own individual table.
As well as great food, I must recommend the cocktails. They aren't cheap but they are big and the house cocktail - the ping pong - is lush!

Party
I've not stayed here but instead I went to a function at this hotel, so I can't comment on the rooms.
The function rooms are however great. The buffet menus are good value and they don't seem to ramp up the price on a bar as other hotels often do. We were able to stay in the venue until 2am.
They are able to cater to your own event or they also do great xmas party ideas.

Dance
If you're after a pretty normal club, playing pretty commerical music then Po Na Na is the place to go.
It's a nice club and the people who go there aren't too young. They are after a good time and there's no loitering when it comes to getting on the dancefloor. My favourite night is also thursday - it's a bit random!

Review of Coronation Rock Co

Sweet
Rock is a great sweet. It's very sticky and lasts ages. However it also rots your teeth.
I find that Coronation Rock is the best rock in Blackpool though. This is a really cute shop and it sells so much more than the hard stuff - lots of fudge also. Plus you can get rock shaped into different rude objects.
Hooray for seaside towns.

Great
The pizzas here are really great. Probably the best in the area.
They're cooked in a stone fire, so you get that great crispy base that lots of other people can't do that well. The toppings are always piled on and taste fresh.
A more exciting option than Pizza Express for another night.

Yellow
This is an It's A Scream Pub so its full of cheap drinks and cheap food - particularly for this part of London.
There's two floors - upstairs has some pool tables and downstairs you can amuse yourself with quiz machines and video jukeboxes.
A wide range of drinks are on offer but don't go looking for anything fancy. It's all the normal range of alcopops, beers, spirits and shots.
Thee's also an outside area with those big heaters to keep you warm on benches when you are having a cigarette.

Review of Bens Cookies

Amazing
I was excited to find a Ben's Cookies in London because I thought it was a Leamington only thing where I first discovered it.
This is in the heart of Covent Garden and is often busy. They've got loads of flavours. I like the chocolate ones est but you can get nutty and fruity ones too.
If you buy 6 you get them cheaper but one cookie alone is about £1.50. They are crunchy on the outside but gooey on the inside. Perfection!

Spend!
This is a great clothing shop with clothes for both men and women. It's got a kind of outdoor surfer style feel to it but I think that's more on the male side.
Clothes are pretty expensive but they are good quality. There's often quite a big sales rack which reduces things right down so it's good to keep an eye out on that rail.
Changing rooms are nice and spacious and the sales staff are really nice. Cool!

This is a good place to come when you're after something hearty. They do brilliant fry ups but we enjoy evenings the most.
The shish kebabs are huge and having tried the lamb, steak and chicken I can recommend them all. Particularly love the steak, it's really good quality. And don't miss the starters, the mixed meze is massive. You only need the 'for 1' between two of you.

We had a great dinner here when visiting Wales earlier in the year. It was recommended by a friend who had been in 2007 and it lived up to expectations.
Very nicely decorated and with very polite staff. Food is dimsum and it was the nicest dim sum I'd ever had. It wasn't cheap but it was well worth it.
Also if you're a Doctor Who fan you're in the centre of Torchwood based action as the square is just around the corner.
And don't miss the drinks, we had nice tasting and gloriously presented cocktails.

Blackpool's most popular bar with the indie / alternative crowd, in fact one of their very few hangouts. It has a very student-y crowd and has been popular in the town for ages. My father and his friends went there!
It's got lots of different drinks from normal bottled favourites to a wide range of real ales.
They have live band nights every week and often an alternative DJ. People go here before going to Jenx at Insomnia quite often.

Review of Chez Gerard
11 Apr 08, 01:50
yum
This is my favourite London Chez Gerard to go to. It's narrow but goes up several floors culminating in a private room at the top.
The food is quite expensive and is French Brasserie style. So expect lots of steaks and mussels.
I always enjoy the bread, olives and garlic butter that's presented before the meal starts. The ground floor has booths but they are quite tight to fit so a normal table may be better.

This is a good pub to meet friends before a crawl down through Clapham. It's off the main route which is a good starting sign.
We went on a Saturday night and booked via toptable which gave us a 2 course meal for £15. We all chose steak so that's all we can commend on, but it was really well cooked - surprisingly so for a pub.
Service was polite and we had a really nice time. There's a good local atmosphere.

Review of Gordons Wine Bar
11 Apr 08, 01:33
Drink
Walk down some quite steep creaky stairs and you're suddenly in an otherworldly wartime feeling wine bar just by Embankment.
It does get very busy though so you can often feel overwhelmed upon arrival and in summer it gets very hot. However there are plenty of outdoor tables with parasols which is nice.
There's a huge range of wine and it's the only drink on offer. They also have random bits of food like bread and really good cheese.
I would think it would be great for dates. If I ever have one again in my life I shall try out this theory.

Dance dance
It claims to be an international jazz bar but I know it more as a late night drinking den.
It's quite edgy, you don't know what to expect. The crowd are a mixture of old east end and normals who wander in. They're open till about 4am Thursday - Sat and have a very random DJ who just plays whatever random R&B he fancies from the 90s. They do also have jazz bands on during the week which are fun. It's normally £4 late in.

10 Apr 08, 01:15
PIE
Not a cheap option for lunch but a reliable one. This is quite a large benugo cafe with seating inside and out.
Select a sandwich which is premade or the servers can make it in front of you. I particularly recommend the pies - there's normally a veggie and meat option. Get it with lashings of gravy, mash and ketchup and be the envy of your workmates!

Review of Scotts Sandwich Bar
10 Apr 08, 01:14
Eat me
I was immediately drawn to this place because it looks quite cool from the outside. Service is quick and pleasant but it's pretty expensive, I regard going here for lunch as a treat!
There's a wide range of sandwich, salad and jacket potato options and usually a few hot options like lasagne also.
One of the best sandwiches shops in Covent Garden.

Review of Faulkners

Yum
This is generally known as one of the best fish & chips in London. It's really good but very expensive so I'm not sure how much it deserves that tag.
Eating in is almost double the price to take away. Take away cod & chips equals about £8 each, but you seriously do not need a chip portion each unless you are the hungriest you have ever been because the portions are huge, enough to feed 2.
Service is quick & friendly.

Review of La Bodeguita
09 Apr 08, 18:44
Yum!
This was my first introduction to Columbian food. You might find things that are similar to familiar items in mexican restaurants but there's loads of different choices. I liked the beef with mushroom sauce. The meat had a great texture and the sauce was creamy and really tasty. There are also lots of dessert options which is always a bonus.
La Bodeguita is very popular with locals, service is really quick and it's one of those places which is really buzzy. Be warned though, if it's your birthday and your friends tell the staff they WILL embarrass you with loud music & pointing!!

Review of Tesco Express
09 Apr 08, 18:38
Good
This Tesco is one of the best Express ones I've ever been in. Probably because of it's location it's really large and stocks really upmarket food that you might not even see in a normal large tesco.
Lots of tills and helpful staff.
Located just by the green.

Review of Eds Easy Diner
09 Apr 08, 18:35
MEAT
If you really want to pig out Ed's is great.
The best thing is their milkshakes, the oreo cookie one is to die for (and pretty similar to the TGI one if you've had that).
Choosing your burger and your type of fries separately can add up but generally quick service and tasty food makes it worth it.

Review of Club Heaven & Hell

No longer here
This no longer exists, but when it did it was brilliant.
Double Your Money, £5 in and free bar promotions made it a wicked night out when we were all 18. There were 2 rooms, heaven played pop and hell, dance.
Then it went downhill and disappeared! Boo hoo.

Review of Insomnia

Small & Shiny
This is a small club on Topping Street, around the corner from the Syndicate.
The odd decor is all shiny silver and it feels like a club built in the 80s that was later abandoned! The main night here is Jenx on a Friday which is an indie disco, drinks are quite cheap and it's normally about £5 in.

Review of The Gaucho Grill
09 Apr 08, 17:41
Full of steak
A huge places split over several floors, Gaucho Grill is located in a seculded enough spot behind Picadilly Circus to avoid the riff raff!
Steak is the main food and there are many different cuts, toppings and sizes to choose between. We found service to be a bit dismissive however.

Review of Bierodrome

Good food & drink
From the belgo's chain, this is a great restaurant and bar on Upper Street. It's up by the town hall so high enough to avoid drunk maniacs.
Food is Belgian and includes lobster, steaks, burgers, fish & chips plus some really great desserts.
The beer is really key though with hundreds of different assortments. Favourites include the Ninkeberry and fruli beers. Delerium Tremors is a fav with my male friends if they want to get drunk quickly.

Review of Tossed

Saladtastic
A touch of health in a zone of food disasters. There's not many nice places to eat around leicester square.
Pick your base from cos, brown rice, cous cous and mixed leaves then select either a house salad or design your own.
There's also sandwiches, soups, stews, jacket potatoes avaliable and they do great smoothies. I particularly enjoy the strawberry surprise & chicken caesar salad.

Review of Randall and Aubin

Seafood & Disco
Fancy expensive seafood & steak in the heart of Soho's gay scene? Love disco pumping and glitterballs! you're in luck.
Located on Brewer Street, just down from Madme Jo Jos, it's pretty expensive and often has a queue.
There aren't any sit down tables, instead it's stool and tall table / bar based.
Service can be a bit stuck up but the fabulous disco surroundings make up for it. The chicken rotisserie is particularly nice, very melt in the mouth, various steaks are on offer and seafood elements picked from a fresh counter.
Personal recommendation would be the prawn cocktail and half lobster with fries.

Review of West Coast Rock Cafe
09 Apr 08, 16:44
American Diner
Deceptively hidden behind a rather shonky looking door next to Next, West Coast Rock is a treat mainly locals only know about.
It's an American diner style restaurant and has a massive menu from pizzas to salads to steak to burgers. Prices range from about £7 to £13.
Chicken Caesar Salad is particularly good as are the mozarella sticks.
