Review of Captain Kidd
21 May 07, 10:56
An enjoyable, laid back, oldeworld pub.
The Captain Kidd is rather special. A Samuel Smiths pub, and therefore no major branded alcohol on tap, it's a converted warehouse and often full of lots of locals relaxing around the bar. It has a spacious outdoor seating area which will definately be worth a visit in the Summer, and is equally open indoors with vast seating areas. Situated on the river in Wapping, it is definately somewhere to trek to. Literally two minutes left of the tube station, it is the sort of pub to really grow an affection for. It's just a shame they stop serving food at 3pm.

Review of Carling Academy Islington
19 May 07, 12:32
Average music, woeful layout, dire beer
The Carling Academy in Islington, like everything else in life, is going to be liked by some and hated by others. For me personally, it is a dive and I really can't stand it. Set in Islington, five minutes down the road from Angel Tube Station, I'll confess it's an okay location for a club, but that's where the positives end. With mediocre musical choices, flat over expensive Carling in plastic cups and a weird layout involving two crammed awkwardly placed bars, it feels like a nightmare. I confess I might enjoy it more after extra visits, but honestly I doubt it. The organisers need to rearrange the location, improve the beer, and lower prices. Until then, I'm happy to avoid this place.

Review of The Worlds End
16 May 07, 16:52
Average establishment in a rough area
The centre of Camden is not somewhere for the faint hearted. Based on an inappropriate reputation of "Cool", the centre of Camden is one of those places you can grudgingly set foot in during the day, but should never go near at night. As a result of it's location, The World's End is already struggling as a venue, but it does fight back from this disability well. With a nice spacious building, acceptable beer, and a tolerable atmosphere, it isn't a bad place. If you do find yourself in Camden, there are much worse places to be. It's just not somewhere I'd personally want to be.

Review of Lush
16 May 07, 16:24
Expensive, but upstairs is amazing
The Cedar Room is not your typical late night location. True, like so many other places in London, it is an overly expensive, manic place on Saturday nights, but it benefits from the most amazing upstairs. When open to general public, you walk upstairs, and it's a joy to behold. Quiet and laid back with leather sofas everywhere, there is probably nowhere better to sit in London to relax and chat. It's a great change, but when the upstairs is closed, you are better off elsewhere.

Review of The Comedy Pub
15 May 07, 18:07
Posh and soulless experience
The Comedy is one of those pubs which attempts to cater for everybody, and fails to satisfy anyone. Literally a five minute walk from Piccadilly Circus tube, it is right in the heart of London, and has prices to reflect that. Overly expensive, and somewhat posh (I saw Danny Baker in there, doesn't make it posh, but does make it pretentious), it does have a wide array of decent spirits ranging from Bombay Gin to Absolut Vodka, but none of this makes up for it's lack of atmosphere. The Comedy is divided into three levels, top is a sports bar, middle is a godless cramped bar, and downstairs is a music venue. None appeal, and none entertain. It's an annoying venue, and one which just needs to let itself develop a personality. Best avoided.

Review of Devonshire Arms
12 May 07, 23:48
Heavy Metal / Goth Bar in Camden
The Devonshire Arms is the place where all the heavy metal/rockers and goth hang out. If you arent interested if that scene then dont bother going because you won't enjoy it. Usually the doormen will stop you if you dont look the part but you wont be missing much, its an ordinary looking pub inside and outside with nothing special about it whatsoever.

Review of The Coronet
11 May 07, 15:10
One of the worst pubs I've ever been to
The Coronet exemplifies everything which is wrong with Wetherspoons. Based in what used to be either a cinema or a theatre (I confess I'm unsure which), the inside of a beautiful building has been gutted to make way for a badly lit, dirt cheap dive. Everything Wetherspoons is here. Badly lit, miserable bar staff, mediocre beer choices, laughable food. I hate Wetherspoons a lot of the time anyway, but when you get that in a potentially beautiful building, it just makes things even worse.

Review of Cineworld West India Quay
08 May 07, 09:59
A good cinema, but a bit obscurely located
The Cineworld at West India Quay is yet another decent London cinema. With a decent film lineup, a nice friendly bar where you can buy overpriced lager before going to see a film, it has some great features. At the same time however, this is also one of the more obscurely located cinemas I know of. Situated at West India Quay away from the hustle of Canary Wharf, it never really feels like somewhere comfortable and for some reason I've seen more violent encounters and kids trying to get in for free, than any other cinema in London. There are some major flaws with this place, which is a shame because it has an okay layout and selection of films. Never mind.
