Review of Ash Bar

So much potential, filled with idiots 3*

It annoys me when the owner spends an obvious amount of time and money refurbishing and improving this bar/nightclub/restaurant but then lets it down by allowing underage kids and complete idiots through the door. The restaurant and bar area is nice, with tasteful style and funky lighting. The nightclub has an interesting layout with a massive sunken dance floor, a large round bar and an additional seating area. The highlight of this place though is the sheltered and patio-heated Shisha area in the back. Following the smoking ban last year which decided to cut even Shisha out of public indoor spaces (putting edgware road out of business), many bars have begun to specialise in outdoor areas such as these which give the essence that you're in a warmer climate sitting in classy surroundings. The quality of the sheesha is decent and the food is also above par. Drinks include the normal beverages as well as fantastic Milkshakes. The service is crap though, if you order or ask for something you have to keep checking up on them. Not only that, but the stupid waiter dropped a piece of charcoal which had to land on my new 80 quid jacket and burn a hole through the shoulder...i only found out when i got home though so there was nothing i could do. overall though, the place itself is lovely but the nightclub is a no=go area full of little noisy kids. the bar and restaurant is just about barable...i say, go for the sheesha with some mates and you can't go wrong. Brilliant idea, stupidly executed.

Review of Destiny

Massive; but watch out for the crowd 3*

Destiny, and more specifically Watford attracts all types of party-goers. From those who are keen on the new urban scene to those who are complete indie-rock goers, it's bizarre to watch. I went to Destiny last year not really knowing what to expect, except from the fact I knew it was massive. The first hour and a half of my night was spent in a que, with people pushing in, pushing out! and basically pushing in general. All good fun for about 10 minutes until you realise it's cold, wet and that you're missing out on potential fun. When I did get inside, I was greeted by possible the highest temperatures ever experienced in a night club, it was humid, sweaty and make it harder to breath. Not good seeing as I wore a jumper to brave the weather outside. The club itself is gigantic with different floors, areas and sections dedicated to each branch of music and crowd. The main section played the popular dance and rnb cuts and was reminiscent of Oceana in Birmingham (which is fantastic). All in all it is a nice club but only if you're really in the clubbing or raving mood, it's not a place to chill that's for sure. it's also certainly anything other than upmarket, as they crowd, surroundings and general atmosphere cry out 'chav and rudeboys' in general. You can tell who the regulars are here and you can tell they make it a point to spend every weekend in this club until the day they die. Good luck to them, I prefer going to Central London and paying a bit more (ok a lot more) but having a much better night out. Oh, and London club goers know what air conditioning and deodorant is too :-P

Review of The Crazy Horse

06 Feb 08, 16:29

Could be better 3*

Don't get me wrong, there is nothing specifically bad about Crazy Horse. It's situated in a nice area, it has a vibrant buzz about it, it's always packed and is nicely furbished. The problem however is that it doesn't really know what it is at night; during the day it is a good bar and grill, at night however it falls into the ever so common trap of being a club/pub/bar/restaurant all in one. This attracts a massive variety of different people looking for different things. I'll give you an example, I went for a mate's birthday a few months ago, there was a DJ as always on a Saturday night and some people were dancing, others stood and chatted or sat in the scarce areas of seating. Other people came in for a quick drink, others had come expecting a quietish area for a nice chat and beer, others had come to eat. How do you combine all these poeple into a small building? With alot of claustrophobia and discomfort. That's how! Not only do you have to weave your way through the crowd, the crowd is like a pick and mix of North West London's community meaning it ranges from investment bankers to basically high school kids with fake ID (I know because I used to get in ages ago!). I can't say avoid it because it is a nice place, but I can't recommend it too much either. Go at your own risk, this place is much like a lottery.

Review of Chop Chop Noodle Bar

Decent food, not really a restaurant 3*

The last review was spot on, this isn't a proper restaurant, just a take-away with loads and loads of chairs and tables inside it. So as one would expect, service is not their strong point, I think it actually hurts them to smile or say hello. They chuck the menu in your face, you tick off the boxes of the numbers that match up to your dish (no really, this is the definition of over-efficiency) and then you wait for your food. Bristling with students and business-lunch goers, it is a vibrant and noisy place right until it closes. I hate it when the service is rubbish and honestly it nearly put me off but the food itself is decent enough to warrant it a 3-star review. It is fairly cheap and best of all, it's proof that you don't have to eat at McDonalds, KFC etc . to get a cheap meal. The service is really off-putting, and sometimes they have got my orders wrong. The last point is they typically try to get you in and out very quickly and so love it when you pay by cash; if you pay by card you have to go right up to the counter where they face you with the "Offer Gratuity?" option on the card-machine; some people fall for this and accept it; me on the other hand smile and click "No". Come for a quick meal and it's lovely, but otherwise you feel so unwelcome it's like you trespassed into somebody's house.
