Review of HMV

Cheap, albeit inconsistent staffing 2*

HMV Canary Wharf is a strange branch of the chain. With a wide range of cheap DVDs, it should be a leading outlet. At the same time though, the staff are an inconsistent bunch. In the number of times that I've been into this store, the staff have varied excessively. On one occasion I've had one member struggling for almost twenty minutes to actually find the DVD I wanted, yet on another time I asked whether the firm could provide me with a map of HMVs (as available on their system) only to be rudely denied this request. I don't mind a store being limited in what it can provide, but I do expect a bit of staff courtesy.

Review of W H Smith

Large WH Smiths Branch 4*

From the outside this WH Smiths doesn't look that big at all but once you walk inside you will see that its actually bigger than a lot of the major branches in the city. There is a huge range of magazine titles and I was impressed by the number of books they had in stock. The store was clean and the service quick, when I visit wood green I usually go into this store to see what they have.

Review of Heals

Nice Department Store 3*

Heal's is a really nice department store and there are a few stores around central london. They are all pretty much the same size selling the same stock. The range of items is good but the problem I find with heals is the price, which I think is over inflated even for London, so if you can find someone else that stocks what you want - go there. Nevertheless, it's a good place to get ideas from for home furnishings and fittings.

Review of The Phoenix

Risen From The Flames 4*

I believe the name of the pub is in reference to part of ally pally burning down several years ago (phoneix from the flames). It's a cracking little pub and probably has one of the best views in North London. Definately come here in the summer although the walk up the hill maybe a little tiring, the view is worth it. Inside the pub is nicely done out and the prices are ok although could be a little cheaper. A pub for the summer.

Review of Books Etc

two small stores with a dire selection 1*

For somewhere as big as Canary Wharf to have so little choice of books is more than a little disappointing. Whilst clothes and food take every part of the Wharf by prominence, when you are looking for something decent to read, you find yourself limited to two less than satisfactory book shops. Tiny and with a selection limited to mostly mainstream and a few older, less entertaining books, the opportunity to buy reading material is signifanctly minor. If you want to find something to read in London, don't go near here. Dire.

Review of Showcase Cinema

Large Mulitplex in North London 3*

Hollywood Green is another big Multiplex in North London. I cant think of any bigger around the area. Its a nice cinema with 7 screens which are all quite large. As like all cinemas nowadays the food and drink is pricey but they do have deals of this and on tickets on the weekday. A good place for those who like big screen performances.

Review of Crobar

Heavy Metal / Rock Bar 2*

Crobar is a good place to go for those on the heavy metal/rock scene. If you don't, then don't go to it as there will be nothing here that will appeal to you. On the plus side the bar staff are friendly and the crowds are lively. The decor reminds me of an old student union bar but for the city, the drink prices are quite cheap. But don't expect a large selection of drinks.

Review of Costa

Very Good Chain Store Coffee 4*

Costa coffee in my opinion serves far better coffee than it's main competition starbucks. This is a small cosy branch perfect for a relaxing cup when out shopping in the swiss cottage/ finchley road area. It tends to be fairly quiet and there is always available and comfortable seating. The staff are efficient and pleasant. The atmosphere has always ben very quiet and peaceful. Haven't had a bad cup of coffee there yet!

Review of Costcutter

Average store with good food selections 3*

Costcutter is actually quite a good chain. Providing a wide selection of services, it never fails to supply it's customers with food, drink and magazines. The branch on Holloway Road is no different. Great for topping up your gas and electric cards, it is a friendly enough place to visit with some terrific foods. In fact, if there is one problem with the place, it is the way that the entrance ramp is so steep, that it can't be of any practical use to those who actually need it. That is a problem, but once inside the store, this is an acceptable store.

Review of Bartok

Great Bar at top of camden 4*

I came across this bar by accident. It's really nice and because its so far up towards Chalk Farm, very few people explore beyond the more popular venue of the Barfly. Thus its not as busy as it should be. I cant put me finger on why I like it so much but its just got a really chilled atmosphere about it. The interior is also nice and the food is great.
