Review of Childrens Bookshop

04 Aug 08, 23:01

Knowledgeable and helpful 5*

The shop may not be huge, but what it lacks in space it makes up with an utter passion for getting kids excited about reading. It is stocked to the rafters with books for children of all ages. Buying suitable books can be daunting as picking something appropriate for a child's reading level and age is tough now that Enid Blyton has competition! But what makes this shop special is the staff advice and recommendations. They take the time to find out who you're buying for and what you'd like to get achieve with it: books not only to interest, but also books to challenge.

They do stock all the usual suspects, plus audio books and will order anything that's still in print but haven't got.

There should be more bookshops like this.

Review of Bakko

Kurdish delight 4*

This family owned and run Turkish spot is one of my favourites in Muswell Hill. Unlike many Turkish restaurants the food is tasty, light and not swimming in oil. The menu items are in Kurdish (with English descriptions) but they make you order in Kurdish which is alway a laugh after a drink or two! Dishes include a wide variety of hot and cold meze and there is masses of choice for veggies.

In summer they open the massive floor to ceiling windows at the front, making it a lovely cool place to dine and wine. On the subject of wine, try the house red - very reasonable by the glass, carafe or bottle.

Review of Mcanerney P.A Dental Surgeon

Smile! 5*

Patrick is fab. I've been going to him since 1994 and I can honestly say he's the best dentist I've ever had. And in that time I've had no fillings! He puts you at ease and he has calming fish in the waiting room.

He works with two hygenists - and the blonde one (sorry I can't remember her name) is particular good and very gentle, given that descaling teeth can be painful - not here though she used bubblegum flavoured gel to numb your gums. Yum!

Review of Taste Of Nawab 2

Arguably the best curry in London 4*

I've been eating at Taste of Nawab since 1994 and it is still one of the best curry houses I've ever been to. Abdul, the owner looks after everyone and that's why people go back. Plus they have won awards and deservedly so.

They have this secret recipe special sauce to with your naan bread which is delicious. And the chicken marango and mutter paneer are fab. They also do takeaway and delivery. Yum.

Review of Fagins Toys

The perfect toy shop 5*

Fagin's is a little treasure trove of a toy shop and the complete anthesis of a Toys R Us. It has everything from board games to dressing up clothes, arts and crafts to magic tricks. It caters for the newborns to family games . Plus stocks a decent selection of outdoor toys for the summer.

My particular favourites are the farmyard animals by the front door and the low table in the middle of the shop stuffed with silly little toys such as bouncy balls, colour pencils, creepy crawlies, glow in the dark stars. Magic.

Review of Sunshine Garden Centre

03 Apr 08, 14:52

Knowledgeable and friendly 4*

I fall into the category of "clueless gardener" and that's why the staff at The Sunshine Garden centre are my new best friends. They've made recommendations on planting, steered me in the right direction on organic pest control, explained "lawn dressing" and helped me pack it all into my car. And they even helped me find local landscaper.

There's also a good cafe on site and a good selection of cards, books and gifts if you're in need of a last minute present.

Review of Giraffe

31 Mar 08, 12:05

Brunch... with babies 3*

This branch of Giraffe is a great place for Sunday brunch - nice location, comfy interior, consistent food and good coffee. The downside? The number of pushchairs / prams rammed into the front of the restaurant. Giraffe is very child-friendly, so for someone without ankle-biters that wants a bit of peace during breakfast, it can get overwhelmed with screaming babies at the weekend. All of which seem to have been ferried to the restaurant in the bulkiest pushchairs money can buy. If you've got a family, get there early at the weekend to park your pram. Those sans kids - mid afternoon is a good time to turn up...

Review of Toffs

26 Feb 08, 23:33

Arguably the best fish and chips 5*

About a year ago I went off to San Francisco for 2 weeks. And on my flight home all I could think about was fish and chips. Specifically fish and chips from Toffs. They are that good. And deservedly so.

I went straight from Heathrow to Toffs. No stopping at home to drop suitcase off, no shower, no quick nap.

Haddock, chips and a cup of tea. Lovely.
