Review of HSBC
30 May 08, 12:17
Petite
I've seen bigger branches than this one, there is a cash machine outside and a paying in machine alongside a statement one inside.
The staff are helpful but it can get busy if there are more than 2 people in there!

Review of HSBC
30 May 08, 12:06
Busy but efficient
This is the biggest of the branches in the city and is a good bank.
Inside could do with a lick of paint but the service is good, more than one person to look after non-standard enquiries, plenty of machines and big enough that you don't bump into people all the time.

Review of Reiss
30 May 08, 12:04
Expensive
The clothes in Reiss are expensive but a very good quality. This branch is no different, the staff are helpful and the store has a good layout. If you want something smart and don't mind paying more then this branch is a good option

Review of The Brighton Dome
30 May 08, 11:50
Great venue
I'm not a fan of the Brighton Centre as a concert venue so I was excited to go and see a concert at the Dome. It is of course the site of ABBA's famous Eurovision win with Waterloo...history lesson over
This is a superb venue, the bar area is large enough for everyone not to feel too crowded and the venue itself is great, a good view from wherever you sit.

Review of Buddie's Plaice
30 May 08, 11:47
Convenient but crappy
It's great that you can get whatever you want at any time of the day but I made the mistake of coming here sober.
I tried the fish and chips where the chips were pathetically puny, the fish was greasy and the small coke was REALLY small.
Good after a few drinks but if you're sober then go somewhere else.

Review of Poundland
17 May 08, 15:38
How much is that?!
Everything is a pound...except for that thing there which is 72p, random.
I am always a bit dubious about these shops, some things are on;y worth a pound because they are crap, I bought an umbrella from here today and put it up, it feels like it's worth a pound! Then you have the brand names which are only a pound. I bought some air freshener from here, cost me...yes you guessed it, £1. I was really chuffed, until I went to a supermarket where it was on sale for 98p. Now I know it's only 2p but that's not the point, where's my bargain. I worry that people go here thinking they are getting a bargain but sometimes you're really not.

Review of Nando's Chickenland
16 May 08, 18:37
Very bad experience
It saddens me to have to re-review this Nando's because I was in love with the chicken the last time I went, now sadly I am broken hearted.
I went for a spot of lunch at around 2pm on a Thursday and it was surprisingly busy, they still had somewhere for us to sit although it was right next to the kitchen and something must have burnt because the smell was very strong and there was a smoky haze across the restaurant.
We sat, we ordered and we got drinks, all the things you do yourself. The problems started when they kept sitting people down even though it was clear they couldn't cope with the number of people already in the store. The food was being prepared and you could see it sat on the hot plate waiting to be brought to tables. Our food was sat there for at least 5 minutes, I was tempted to get it myself but apparently that's not how restaurants work. When it did arrive you could tell it had been sat out for a while, the pitta bread was cold and hard and the food generally wasn't very warm. We complained and they eventually took the food away. It took a manager to have to sort this out, he actually went into the kitchen and cooked the food for us, he brought it back and to his credit was very apologetic. Even though we were full he offered free desserts, which we declined. He also brought some vouchers for a return visit, one final chance for this place to redeem itself. I don't want to have to go somewhere else for my chicken but if it doesn't improve then I will cluck off somewhere else.

Review of Envy
14 May 08, 11:47
Grown out of it
I liked Envy when I was in my late teens but since I've grown up a bit I am finding it a bit young now.
The clothes are ok if you like the more expensive labels. The problem I always found was that I felt intimidated when I went into the store, I don't know why but this one is no different, it's almost like they are watching to see if you are going to buy anything. Probably just me being odd.

Review of Suits You
14 May 08, 11:43
Poor selection
I was looking for a suit for everyday use but I didn't want to spend a fortune. Combine that with me being tall and broad, the selection was not good at all. I was given the choice of 2 suits of which neither were suitable.
I didn't find the staff that helpful, as soon as I told them how much I wanted to pay, it seemed like they lost interest. I was much happier at Moss Bros

Review of River Island Clothing Co
14 May 08, 11:37
Consistently good
This branch of River Island is one of the better ones I have been into. There is a good selection for men and women, the store is bright and has really good air conditioning so when you walk in from Churchill Square you are happy to browse without feeling hot and sweaty.
The staff are friendly and always happy to help as well

Review of Expo Gallery
14 May 08, 11:34
Lovely stuff but expensive
I really like this shop, having said that I have never actually bought anything from it because I think it is quite expensive.
When you can search Brighton's Laines for cheap quality prints or artwork or quirky gifts, I think it is a bit much to pay big prices like in Expo. Having said that, i really like the stuff they sell in here. They have cool prints, canvas art, quirky clocks and loads of other cool stuff, as well as some great postcards. If you're willing to spend a bit more then you should think about having a look round

Review of Clinton Cards
14 May 08, 11:31
Good cards
You can always find what you want at Clintons, whether it's a soppy card, a funny card, a card from your dog to your girlfriend, tacky gifts and of course LOTS OF TEDDY BEARS.
This particular one is well stocked and big enough that you don't feel cramped inside.

Review of Bills Produce Store
13 May 08, 11:47
A hidden gem
This really is one of Brighton's hidden gems. There's a reason why people queue in the heat on a Sunday morning to eat here, the reason is....it's brilliant food in a great setting.
From the outside it looks like a warehouse and even when you walk in it doesn't look much more. What you have is almost like a New York City Deli, lots of tables and waiters going at 50mph all over the place in a bid to serve the hungry punters. There is loads of seating but it still gets really full.
The food is all fresh and the brunch is some of the best I have tasted, have anything and you will not be disappointed at all. You will want to come back again and again, just be prepared to queue

Review of The Hampton
13 May 08, 09:45
It's out of town and ok
I've only been here once and i found it ok. It's not the biggest place so space is at a bit of a premium. The drinks were reasonably priced, I didn't try the food.
There is seating outside if you feel too cramped inside. The toilets were not the best I have seen, the staff seemed ok but not always that cheerful.
This place is set back from the main city centre so that's a bit of a bonus, it's not that well known by chavs so that IS a bonus

Review of Doctor Brightons
12 May 08, 10:43
Trendy bar
I can't believe I just used the word trendy but this place is, it's a cool bar for the young people of Brighton. It has quite a large gay following as it's not far from the bars in Kemp Town.
It's also a good place to go for a quick drink before a gig at the Brighton Centre if you don't fancy the hell of West Street. It's tucked away near the Thistle Hotel so you might not see it at first but look carefully and you shall find it, and enjoy it you will

Review of Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club
12 May 08, 10:40
Can't wait for the new stadium
I'm not a Brighton fan but as I live in the city I thought it was only right that I sample the atmosphere and watch a bit of lower league football.
The quality of the match isn't what I will review thankfully but it's fun at the Albion. If it's winter and you're in the open stands then it's not so much fun but that will all change when the new stadium is built. For now it's basic, there are burger vans and enough catering for everyone and it's not too expensive so give it a go, even if it's just for a laugh at the match itself

Review of The Font & Firkin
12 May 08, 10:36
Not a bad place
I think the reason I like this place is that it reminds me of my student days. It's a big place set out over 2 levels so there is no problem finding a seat...apart from during the big footie games. This place has a great atmosphere for the big games, I watched England in the World Cup here and it was fantastic.
The student comparisons definitely apply to drinks prices, much cheaper than some of the local pubs. Just a great place to start a night

Review of Hilton Brighton Metropole
09 May 08, 12:48
Great hotel
This is one of the great places in Brighton, a beautiful building inside and out. The rooms are spacious and comfortable and the function rooms are superb places to hold your event in. The staff are friendly, the food is sometimes questionable but generally you won't find much better in Brighton. Only 3 stars because you expect quality from a Hilton.

Review of Debenhams
09 May 08, 12:16
Does the job
Debenhams is renound for its choice and this one is no different. You will almost always find something you want in here. Some of the clothes might not be the most desirable but you can generally find something you like. If not then you can always take advantage of the free personal shopper Sakib who will help you on your way.
I also believe there is a good selection of make up for the women, as well as a small La Senza on the bottom floor.

Review of Zara
09 May 08, 12:09
Typical, not enough men's choice
As with a lot of high street stores there is an incredible choice for the women but not so for the men. The women's section in this Zara is well stocked but the same can't be said for the mens. There is a very limited amount for the men who share the bottom floor with the kids and MORE women's stuff. Having said that, the stuff they do have is obviously a good quality as that is what Zara are famed for. At least there is an escalator down to the mens section to lessen the blow of not finding what you want.

Review of The Sussex
09 May 08, 12:07
Decent enough
This is a great place to drink and chill out, in the summer because you can be outside. Inside is a bit dreary and old fashioned but there are a lot worse places to meet mates and chat.
Outside is great because of the location, there is always something happening on East Street whether it's a musician or an artist, you can people watch and relax in the sunshine.

Review of Brighton Centre
09 May 08, 12:02
Needs modernising
You can't argue with the quality of gigs that the Brighton Centre has. In December 2007 there was a run of gigs including The Hoosiers, Kanye West, Hard Fi, Rihanna....the list goes on, some big artists come here which is great considering it's only 45 minutes from the huge London venues.
However, it's a bit like going to a school hall for a concert sometimes, it needs doing up A LOT otherwise there is a risk of the big acts deciding to leave Brighton off their gig list

Review of Odeon Cinema
09 May 08, 11:58
Get down to the Marina
I'm not entirely sure why you would choose to come here over the cinema in Brighton Marina. At this one, parking is awkward and expensive, the cinema is so old and run down it is embarassing, the seats are uncomfortable and there is more legroom on a 1p Ryanair flight to Salzburg, it's not an enjoyable experience.
Whereas the marina has free parking, it's having a refurb now (May 08) and there's loads of room, give the Odeon a miss or risk not enjoying that film you were excited about.

Review of Brighton Pier
09 May 08, 11:31
One of the best things in Brighton
I love this place, it never gets boring. You can go on there just to eat doughnuts, you can waste loads of money on the slots, you could go on the rides, you could go to the questionable pub at the end of the pier...anything you like. It's a MUST DO when you are in Brighton. After this pier, no other pier will compare. Just don't bother paying 20p to look through the telescope, I can tell you myself, it's beautiful but you don't see much.

Review of Waitrose
09 May 08, 11:13
Good selection, high prices
I'm not a Waitrose shopper normally but that's only because I find it too expensive. I don't doubt that the food is good quality but I can't bring myself to pay over the odds for something I can get a lot cheaper somewhere else.
This one is always well stocked and it's in a convenient location. It has the self-shop thing which is sometimes quicker.

Review of Taj
09 May 08, 11:11
Great selection
If you think you're a budding chef then Taj is great, you can look round for ages at the different ingredients you might want to put into your next creation.
It sells fruit and veg, sometimes the size of the veg is impressive. As well as the usual stuff you might find in a supermarket, it has an amazing selection of World Foods, particularly Middle Eastern so if you like spices then this is the place to go.
They also sell the Nargila or Hookah pipe which is synonymous with the Middle East, it's flavoured tobacco without the tar....a great thing for after dinner.
The deli section is well stocked with loads of choice of ready to eat foods. Great place and definitely somewhere to stop off and look around

Review of Subway
09 May 08, 11:04
Usual food, not very clean
The food can't be argued with, it's Subway, if you like it then you like it...this branch is no different in that respect, where it lets itself down is the cleanliness. It might be as a result of it being located on the walk from the bars of the Lanes up to the buses at Churchill Square but when I've been in, it's a bit dirty and there isn't much seating so think about taking away rather than sitting in.

Review of Boots The Chemists
09 May 08, 11:01
HUGE BOOTS
Don't be mistaken when I say this place is big, it is BIG. Potentially the biggest Boots I have ever seen, it is large, big, massive, gigantous....you get the idea.
Anyway, due to it's size it is thoroughly well stocked and although it's a little walk from the bus stops and car park of Churchill Square, it's still the best place to get whatever you need, toiletries, cosmetics, drugs or electrics.

Review of Terraces Bar & Grill
09 May 08, 10:53
Awful experience
My friend had given me a voucher to use here after he had a really bad experience. The voucher was by way of an apology to them from the management, an attempt to make up for it, well it didn't.
The food wasn't very good at all, there was one waiter working who couldn't cope with the 2 tables he had to look after and we felt extremely forgotten. Well this place WAS forgettable however, I will say that I have heard it has new management since then and they are making an effort, which they should because in terms of location looking out to sea, it doesn't get much better.

Review of Carpenter's Cargo Home Shop
09 May 08, 10:47
Strange smell
As far as stock goes, this shop has a good selection, especially if you are looking for kitchen items, it has a really good range on the lower floor. The only problem is that it is blighted by a very strange smell. I don't know if it is the combination of leather, wood and smelly candles but it is really unpleasant. Get past that and you might make a good purchase here, look out in home magazines for offers in store

Review of Zizzi
09 May 08, 09:47
Good food, nice atmosphere
There are so many Italian restaurants, not only in Brighton but especially in this area of brighton so hats off to Zizzi's for ensuring they always offer high quality food in a pleasant environment.
It's another italian chain but you don't feel like you're just another person filling up a table, the service is friendly and personal and the food is exceptional so you feel like you've had a really pleasant dining experience when you leave here.

Review of Bens Cookies
05 May 08, 11:46
Incredible
There are a few places in Brighton that you have to visit...sadly they nearly all involve food, this is one of them.
The selection is superb and whatever you go for, you are guaranteed to like your cookie, or two, or three...they are so good.
Even better, ask if they have any warm ones, if you like white chocolate then see if they have any fresh out of the oven because they are so gooey it's amazing!!

Review of The Brighton Charter Hotel
05 May 08, 11:33
A disgrace to the city
In this brilliant city there are some really great places, then there are some who just let the place down through their unprofessionalism and this is one of them.
Thankfully I have never actually stayed here, although at one point i needed to and they were atrocious.
I had a large booking for 8 people at a weekend, I booked the rooms on the phone directly and was given confirmation details. 2 days, yes 2 days before the weekend when 7 friends were coming to stay in Brighton, I received a phone call to say that the person on the phone had double booked the room and they were cancelling the booking...that was it, not a sorry, nothing to suggest ways to accomodate 8 people at 2 days notice, just that they were cancelling the booking.
I tried for weeks afterwards to discuss the matter in an attempt to get compensation but letters and emails were ignored and i decided not to waste any more time on these people who tarnish the name of the great city.
Do yourself a favour, if this is the only hotel left, bring a tent and go on the beach rather than stay here

Review of ShakeAway
05 May 08, 11:21
Superb
You HAVE to go here if you're spending the day in Brighton.
The concept has probably been explained in another review so I won't repeat that but all there is to say, it's awesome.
I've never been brave enough to try one with sweets in like Starburst or Flying Saucers, I normally go dor a chocolate option. Try Terry's Chocolate Orange with Chocolate Brownies, it's amazing!!
Please don't miss out, it's so so good

Review of Red Veg
05 May 08, 11:17
Good food but not fast
Walking along the North Laines, my girlfriend and I were hungry and Red Veg didn't look as busy as most places....FAST FOOD it said on the window, great, exactly what we wanted.
The menu is varied and inexpensive...the only problem was that it wasn't fast and took over 15 minutes from ordering til the food arrived. It was good when it did but the wait was annoying.

Review of Nando's Chickenland
18 Apr 08, 12:42
Chicken chicken chicken
Nando's is great wherever you are and this is no exception.
The Brighton branch is big and looks new or certainly well looked after.
The food is always good, I always have the chicken breast in pitta bread with pineapple and cheese, it comes on its own or with fries. You can add side dishes as well, the coleslaw is very good too. If you happen to go to this chicken fest with a veggie, they do plenty for them as well so no need to feel guilty.

Review of Easy Bar
18 Apr 08, 12:37
Good location
This is the bar right next to Churchill Square shopping centre and all the bus stops so it's not a bad place to come for a quick drink before heading deeper into town. It's next to the cash machines as well so that's another convenience.
Inside it's nothing special but it's got a well stocked bar and a nice outside area for the summer so it's worth popping in for a quickie

Review of Churchill Square Shopping Centre
18 Apr 08, 12:33
Decent shopping centre
This is a decent shopping centre with everything you need:
Food - there is a big food hall with quite a decent selection. It's on the top floor with toilets and a lift for buggies or lazy people
Shops - A good selection, probably more for women than men but that seems to happen everywhere
Sales people - plenty of those annoying people offering you the chance of a lifetime or a superb new credit card
Car Park - use the second car park as you come up West Street from the seafront. It's usually always got spaces, isn't too expensive and has the added bonus of letting you pay by card at the exit. So dont queue for the pay machines in the car park, leave the ticket in the car and as you drive out, put the ticket into the barrier and then your card. Much quicker
Oh one more thing, it's got incredible DYSON hand dryers in the toilets!!

Review of Atlas Lounge Cafe
18 Apr 08, 12:08
Mmmm Pear Cider
I had walked past this place so many times that I thought it would be rude not to go in. So when I was looking for somewhere cheap for luncyh, I was enticed by their offers on the board outside. A chinese chicken noodle dish for very little money. Went in, had it and loved it.
The bar itself is funky, it's light and airy, the staff are helpful and there are comfy sofas as well.
It also sells Pear Cider which is a perfect summer drink if you don't fancy beer again.

Review of The Coach House Cafe
18 Apr 08, 11:50
There's better places
I wanted somewhere quite nice to take my Mum and Dad when they came to visit me in Brighton and someone recommended The Coach House to me. I don't know if we caught them on a bad night but it was nothing special.
The food was ok but expensive for the setting which all looked a bit run down. The inside is nothing spectacular and unfortunately we were there the same night as a large party, which if pre-booked, would have been nice to have been warned about.
There was nothing overly wrong with the evening but since coming here I have been to many better places in Brighton

Review of Gourmet Burger Kitchen
18 Apr 08, 11:46
Beautiful burgers
I've been here a couple of times as well as one in London....I've never been disappointed. My only complaint is that the burgers are so good and so big that it's hard to get it in my mouth!!
There is so much choice and so many different options that it might take a while to decide. It might take a while for your food as well but only because all the burgers are cooked fresh and are well worth any wait.
The prices are quite reasonable and it's very convenient for Komedia which is next door. Walk past and try and resist the smells, I bet you can't.

Review of Bagelman
18 Apr 08, 11:40
Great food
I love Bagelman, the food is so good and it's all so fresh. I had the chicken, avocado and bacon bagel which was delicious. The chicken isn't processed but succulent chicken breast.
The only problem with this branch is that it doesn;t have the choice of the Hove one, no chicken soup or hot salt beef. Otherwise perfect

Review of Food For Friends
18 Apr 08, 10:52
Incredible place
To start with I should point out that I am a meat eater, I like nothing better than a juicy steak but Food For Friends is still one of my favourite restaurants in Brighton.
It's in the Lanes which is a good start, they're the best area in the city. The building is quite funky, set on the corner of the road. Inside it's simple but not bland, the staff are remarkably friendly and the service is impeccable.
I had chinese style tofu parcels which were beautiful and my girlfriend had a sweet potato curry which she loved. Make sure you leave room for dessert because the chocolate pudding is absolutely stunning!
The prices aren't bad either, you wouldn't mind if it was a bit more expensive because the food is so good and the experience is one you won't forget for a while. Even if you're not a veggie you'd be a fool not to go here at least once in your life.

Review of Gala Clubs
17 Apr 08, 12:48
Good if you win
Before you even try and say otherwise, Bingo is gambling...it might be a fun, adrenalin packed way to do it but it's gambling and like all things gambling, it's addictive!!
This is a nice club, I think, I've not been to one before. But it's clean, full of the usual blue rinse brigade, some young wannabe rich students and the overweight single women who are trying to pay off their fast food debts.
It's free to join and the staff are helpful if like me you weren't really sure what to do, it's not just a case of getting a line or a full house, there are loads of different games to play...but they'll explain.
Once you go in, it's fun...you get excited that you might win, then half way through, sick of saying, "I only needed one more number" or, "oooh that was close, maybe next time!" you realise that you're not one of life's lucky people.
Worth a try though, you never know, you might win...then again...

Review of Lewis & Co
15 Apr 08, 23:12
Now called Hamptons International
This estate agents is still on Church Road but is no longer Lewis and Co but Hamptons Intl.
I dealt with them when they were still Lewis and Co and was thoroughly impressed. I had tried to work with some of the larger, more well known agents in Hove and found them rude and stuffy. Lewis and Co were excellent.
Ed looked after me from the viewing until the sale had been completed and is in fact still dealing with a few matters for me now.
If I decide to sell or even buy again, Lewis and Co (Hamptons) would definitely be my first choice

Review of Sukhothai
15 Apr 08, 23:09
Horrible experience
Do yourself a favour if you thought you wanted to come here, don't bother.
There were 3 of us looking for somewhere to eat and we thought we would give this place a go. We walked in and no word of a lie, were stood at the front door for 5 minutes without even being acknowledged. The staff were ignorant to us even being there. Eventually we sat ourselves down and then had to wait for the menus to arrive.
The food, when it eventually came, was definitely not worth the long wait, it was terrible and summed up the entire experience for me

No, unless you're starving
Don't be fooled by the 3 stars I have given this, that just means it was as expected. Now when i went to Cheeky Chicken i wasnt expecting much and I wasn't let down, it was grim.
Yes it is convenient and cheap but to be honest there is a reason, it's awful and you are guaranteed to wake up the next morning wishing you hadn't done it...so don't!!

Review of Lee Stafford Salons
12 Apr 08, 17:05
This is now CLIPSO
This is no longer Lee Stafford Salons and is now known as Clipso.
I've been coming here for a year now and really enjoy the experience every time. I am quite fussy about hairdressers but had a really positive first experience and have come back again and again.
It's not the cheapest salon but it's well worth paying a bit extra. You are offered a drink from the menu as soon as you walk into the very stylish salon. You will notice the vast amount of products on offer, it's almost as big as some shops so you should find the product you need, if not then someone will recommend something to you.
The general staff are very friendly and all the stylists are excellent. I use Kirsty now and she is superb. If you are willing to spend a little more than other salons then you won't be disappointed

Review of The Fortune Of War
12 Apr 08, 16:28
GO HERE!!!
I'm not a huge fan of some of the clubs on Brighton Seafront which is why this place stands out for me, given that it's a pub anyway means it stands out already.
As the only pub on the seafront it could rest on its laurels and not make the effort but it hasn't done that. Yes it looks old but it's not too expensive, it's comfortable and there's plenty of outside space. Get the right seat above the bar on a summer's evening and you can enjoy your pint with one of the finest possible views.
If you're planning a trip to one of the clubs then make the effort to go here for one first

Great food, bit slow sometimes
One of the best places to eat breakfast or lunch in Brighton and given that it's a veggie place and I'm definitely a meat eater, that's saying a lot.
The place itself is unpretentious yet not scruffy, the service is very friendly, my only criticism would be that when it's busy it's quite slow to get your food but if you get one of the amazing juices or smoothies to tide you over then you don't mind waiting.
Try the halloumi in pitta, it says that it's the girls favourite but if you're a bloke then don't be afraid to order it, squeaky cheese with sweet chilli sauce with roasted peppers, beautiful. To top it all off you get a Fox's glacier mint with your bill!
Oh and it's on the best road in Brighton for me, North Laines is such an amazing part of the city, go there and make you sure get the pitta.

Good quality and good food
So many takeaways to choose from but this one was recommended to me and I wasn't disappointed.
The prices are very good, all dishes come with rice or nan, the delivery times are also good. They tell you 45mins-1 hour but it's never that long.
The food is good quality and not too greasy with very generous portions.
