Review of Liverpool Airport

Imagine
The main feature of this airport is the statue of John Lennon - 'above us only sky'. Good transport links with the city, which is only about half an hour away on the bus.

This is the branch that hit the headlines recently with that story about children being barred. It's a good sized store for a tiown with not a huge number of other facilities.

Back on the train gang
If you can negotiate the taxi rank and bus station outside without getting mown down by the traffic you're home and dry. Don't arrive with too long to wait as there's not much seating.

Review of Paddington Railway Station
30 May 08, 16:17
End of the line
Always busy with commuters heading for Reading and mainline services to the West Country. The Fuller's pub is your last taste of London before you leave. I nearly jumped on the tracks when I found them serving awful St Austell ales one day.

Go west
Handy for mainline services to the West Country and ideal if you like being bashed about the head by idiots who insist on carrying their bags on their shoulders. It's one of those stations where the walk from the ticket machine to the platform feels like it's never going to end.

Flowered up
They do do some nice arrangements and bits and pieces in here, but I'm always a bit disappointed when I see the big lorry coming in with their delivery of flowers from Holland. I'm sure they could find suppliers closer to home, and the blooms might last a bit longer too.

Cherry on top
Not the biggest bakery in North Devon so it can be a bit of a wait to get in the door at busy times, but they keep it well stocked so at least they haven't run out of sausage rolls by the time you get to the front of the queue.

Review of Cotton Traders

Taking the fun out of functional...
I'm not sure why Cotton Traders has a discount store here as I've yet to find anywhere that you have to pay full price for their clothing. Just make sure they don't get hold of your email address, they won't stop hassling you.

Review of Starbucks
30 May 08, 10:47
My first time...
This was my introduction to the whole Starbucks experience and to be honest with you it wasn't bad. But that's Starbucks for you. And because it's Starbucks it wasn't all the great either. There are more interesting places to go, and as this one's often quite full (it is very small) they may be worth seeking out...

Review of Waterstones Booksellers

Tale of two Cities
I love the building that this Waterstone's is in: the downstairs is a bit of a rabbit warren and you can easily get lost, then upstairs it's just cavernous. Go for the deals rather than the selection/choice.

Review of Samuel Daw & Co
28 May 08, 14:30
Suits you, sir
I hate buying clothes with an absolute passion and the problem with this place is that you can't really browse, you need the staff to help you, and that's just what I don't want! I want to go in, get the gear and get out, not be measured and have to pretend I'm bothered what colour it is.

Just a big kid...
I'm sure someone told me that this is the biggest toy shop in the world or something, but it's also one of the busiest and certainly one of the most expensive! The window displays are always fun, and in some ways it's possibly more of a tourist attraction than an actual shop...

What you talkin' 'bout Willis?
I'd have to disagree with Adrian M. The last time I was here there's no way it's on the edge of Taunton, it was slap bang right in the middle! Make sure you've got a plan B in case they're out of parking spaces.

Review of Johnny's Bar
20 May 08, 12:26
Better but not best
Maybe still a bit too 'Bideford' for me if you know what I mean, but the refurb is definitely a vast improvement on its previous incarnation which was wholly unpleasant. The big windows/doors help it look a lot more inviting.

So near so Spar
It's a lot smarter and a bit more 'corporate' now it's been done up but it still provides a good service to the Newport area, especially since places like the newsagent and the other shop at the top of the road closed.

Review of Chivenor Caravan Park

The fun's in tents!
The greatest strength of this place is also it's greatest weakness. It's right on the main road so easy to find and great for getting to Braunton/Saunton/Croyde etc, but the problem is it is right on the main road. When I stayed there a milk float crashed: you don't sleep much after that!

Review of North Devon Leisure Centre
19 May 08, 14:26
Sink or swim
It wins by being just about the only place around here with a swimming pool, but apart from that most of the facilities can be found elsewhere. It'll be good to see what happens when the new one's built in a few years time: this one does spoil the view of the river a bit.

Queues
I like the fact that when the Tube approaches they make an announcement to the effect that you do need to 'alight here for insert name of event'. At least that way you know where to start queueing to get out. And then you can start queueing to get into Earl's Court itself!

Knock knock
I'm always amazed to see crowds of people crowding around the gates and staring up the street when all they're ever going to see is a front door! It's no work of art, a photo really will do just as well. And surely all those MPs going in and out don't need a car to get them back to the office, it's only down the road!

Review of Exeter Race Course
12 May 08, 14:22
Weighed in, weighed in
Pick your spot well at Exeter. The actual racecourse itself is a bit up and down and round about, so unless you've got a good place to stand the only part of the race you'll actually see are the few seconds that the horses run past you. Easy to get to and well signposted from the A38.

I know it's the flagship store, but it's still just another Waterstones. You've got more room to move than in their other bookshops, but not really that much more to see... Review of Mariners Arms
23 Apr 08, 11:42
Nice and smart
Which is a lot to ask from many North Devon pubs. Do you think it's named after the song? "Ye mariners all as you pass by, call in and drink if you are dry, call in and drink think it not amiss, and pop your nose in a jug of this?" I don't know how many seamen they get in landlocked Braunton though...

Blue suburban skies...
This is somewhere you go just to say you've been there really. It's a funny little place that's pretty much slap bang in the middle of a traffic island: they play on the Beatles connection a bit too much and it doesn't hide the fact that this is a bit of a victory for style over substance...

Review of Wetherspoons

Bit of a last resort...
Like with all Wetherspoons pubs you should know what you're getting and this one is no better or worse than any of the others: there are plenty of far more interesting pubs nearby and I'd always pick one of those first. Late licence
They're open until 10, so that's quite handy and they've got lots of sweets etc as well! There's a good range of bottled real ales with quite a few of the local ones, but they are a bit expensive. Look at all the miniatures they have around the top of the wall by the till.

Review of W H Chope & Son

Stuck in the past
Chopes is a lot better for the refit, but it's still a bit 'traditional' for my taste, especially when it comes down to something like the clothes that they have got. It's the sort of place you could go for somewhere quite formal. Also has a very good cookware section and possibly the cheapest car park in Bideford.

Review of Morrisons
15 Apr 08, 16:24
Full of kids
I've never know anywhere like this place: it's like a playgroup with people dragging hundreds of kids along behind them. Good off licence selection: short on the spirits but plenty of wine and a good selection of bottled ales and cider.

Always busy
As the only supermarket in the town centre this place is always packed out! It's better for popping in and getting the few things that you forgot to get when you did your Big Shop rather than trying to push a trolley around: I don't think you'd fit down the aisles anyway. No car park so leave the washing powder and other heavy items.

For some reason they've changed their name to Zavvi which doesn't really mean anything to anyone. The big book shop
The basic lay out here is fiction and children's books downstairs and non-fiction upstairs. It's size means that there is a lot of choice, and because it's a big chain you benefit from their buying power. Lots of money off new titles and the 3 for 2 deals are always worth looking at as well.

Review of W H Smith

Big is beautiful
The main thing that this branch of WH Smith has in its favour is its size which means they have plenty of choice. The other side of the coin is that whether it's cards or books or magazines you're always going to get more choice from shop which concentrates on just selling those items. Convenient rather than comprehensive.

Part of the High Street store
This is the part of the High Street Waterstones that backs on to Cathedral Green. It's got their children's book section in it, but it also leads you into the rest of the store as well.

Bargain Books
You've got to go in here to see what you can find rather than looking for a particular title. They seem to stock books that haven't sold as many copies as the publishers thought they would which means you can pick up some real bargains...

What's going on?
Since its moved upstairs you don't really get as much choice as they had when they used the downstairs as well. It's a bit odd to have to walk through an empty shop and go up the stairs before you get to it, but once you're there they do have a good choice outside of the usual pop/rock selection.

A bit studenty...
...which I don't mind at all, but sometimes they can be a bit noisey: your first drink is always very exciting isn't it? Well worth popping in but you might not get the peace and quiet you want to have a pint and do the crossword.

Handy for the train station
As it's only around the corner from Exeter Central, and they normally have RCH Pitchfork which is one of the best beers ever known to humanity. I think I'd call it a bar rather than a pub: you pop in, have a drink and then move on rather than make it your regular.

Review of The Imperial

As Wetherspoons go...
It's pretty much what you'd expect. The Orangery makes it a little nicer than some of the other pubs in this chain, but let's be honest, the food's not great. And how do they manage to get every single one of their beers to taste the same?

Style over content
Yes it looks nice, and yes the staff are nice and friendly but they're not doing anything here that you can't get anywhere else. The refit's made it look nice, but the food's a bit mass-produced and microwave friendly.

A bit basic...
But if think that pubs are for drinking in then that isn't going to worry you one little bit! Personally I could do without the TVs in the bar: you find yourself looking up even if you don't want to. It's a distraction!

Review of Staples UK

Scary!
Is there such a thing as too much choice? How many different types of envelope do you need to pick from? They always ask you if you've found whatever it is you're looking for but by then I've forgotten what it was I wanted to get in the first place!

Guarantee?
Sometimes the guarantees they have to try and sell you at these places look like they're going to end up costing you more than the product you're actually buying? It does make you wonder about the quality...

Be careful
These guys aren't always the cheapest! It's well worth looking around and making sure that no one else in the area is doing a better offer before you go in there to buy. Avoid at Christmas: just too busy.

No it isn't!
It's the KFC that North Devon's been waiting for: was it worth the wait? Yes and no. It's just another branch of KFC but at least you no longer have to tell surprised holiday makers that they've got to go to Exeter to get one when they ask you for details.

Not McBad but not McGood either
Up/down to their usual MC standards and so they Mc should be! Check your order before you leave: it's annoying when they leave stuff out (but nice when they put extras in). You don't want to like it but you do...

Why the name change from Gateway?
The great thing about this place is that not a lot of people use it so you don't get a lot of the pushing and the shoving and the banging trolleys into each other that you get in most supermarkets. The only queue is at the till.

Play away
It's hard to find a good toy shop on the High Street these days, so this place is well worth knowing about. It does games and jigsaw puzzles etc as well as toys.

I challenge you...
To a game of air hockey! I am the king of this game and I will beat you! Like the rest of Ilfracombe there's nothing wrong with this place that a lick of paint won't sort out, but some of the video games are a little out of date now. Plenty of one armed bandits though.

Review of The Landmark

Some call it Madonna's Bra
But I think it looks more like a nuclear power station. It's the facilities that matter though and this is a nice cosy theatre and a handy function room in The Pavillion. Show me a theatre bar where it's not a nightmare to get a drink in the interval and I'll show you a happy man. It could do with more parking and a bit more variety in the line-up: the summer shows are always a bit old fashioned/end of the pier...

Review of Squires Fish Restaurant
11 Apr 08, 16:05
Frying tonight!
The good thing about Squires is that it is just as good as you've heard. The bad thing is that they do believed their own press. A friend of my uncle's once drove down from London just to go to Squires, then got in his car and went home again. Docked a mark for the lack of onion rings!
