Review of The Royal Park

Lovely Old pub. 4*

I haven't been to this pub for about three years, but have fond memories of the place.

It has a lovely old feel to it, like it s always been there, but also has a modern twist to it. Downstairs there is a great space where live bands usually play on the weekends, which makes it very popular with the student population.

They provide four pool tables and a digital jukebox, which always seems to be busy

Out the back there is a pretty big beer garden where everyone mingles and has a jolly old time.

This used to be my local when I lived in Leeds, and I dont have a bad word to say about the place, even the prices are reasonable, worth a visit!

Review of The Larrik

18 Jul 07, 10:06

Laid back pub 4*

The Larrik offers great service and a relaxed atmosphere and is great for a midweek drink or two. It is a big place, with plenty of space to wonder around when its not packed for a big football game! The bar is full of friendly staff who are efficient while serving, and always offer a smile. The prices are good, expect to pay around £6 for two pints of good lager and the same for two good ales, and the spirits are very reasonable too. They offer lots of board games to play, which is great when there are a few of you around. The kitchen offers some good pub grub, but does have a limited menu when there are games on the big screeens (of which there are two). For a nice relaxed drink with friends and good game of trivial pursuit, you could do worse than to come here for a night!

Review of The Clachan

Unexpected surprise 4*

We found this little gem while looking for places to go out near Carnaby street, and quite a discovery it was! Nestled behind Liberty's department store, it has the feel of a grand old pub from the front, with it's great panes of glass and old style banner across the top. This is further confirmed inside with etched glass and mirrors and a patterned ceiling that look like they came straight from the late 19th century. At night the lights are turned down to an intimate level, which gives the whole place an almost magical feel, with the little light there is relecting and refracting in the glass and mirrors! Coming back down to earth, they have some nice beers and ales on tap and the fridges are nicely stocked with a good selection bottles. The prices are good for central London, but I would pay more for the ambience and the feel of the place! Plenty of seating and even a quiz machine mixing the old with the new, mean this is a qulaity establishment thats well worth a visit!

Review of The Flask

17 Jul 07, 10:08

Great pub in Highgate 5*

The Flask is a fantastic old pub in Highgate village. It has a warm and friendly atmosphere inside with old worn furniture and low ceilings which make for very cosy surroundings. There is a big beer garden out front with plenty of space for lots of seats, which get taken very quickly especially in the summer, as it is a very popular place. In the colder days of autumn and winter there is sheltered seating outside too and they even have heaters so you can stay outside until they close, which is a nice touch! There are a great range of tap and bottled beers aswell as good ales, something to please everyone! The food, though I've never eaten here, is supposed to be great, if a little on the pricey side, and well worth the money. Sunday roasts are also standard, which is always a big hit with punters! To summise, the flask comes pretty damn close to being a perfect pub, definitley pay this place a visit!

Review of The Ten Bells

NIce for a quick drink 3*

As I understand it Jack The Rippers unfortunate victims used to frequent this establishment, which was the main reason I visited it, I wasnt expecting it to be a great pub, so I wasnt disapppointed, but wasn't blown away either. It looks like it has retained some of the features from that period of time, the tiled walls look authentic, and the window frames appear to be original to my uneducated eye, but otherwise it is just a square room with some furniture around the perimiter, I'm noy saying dont go, because I would go back if I was in the area again, but don't expect it to be riproaring fun either, like I said before, it is nice for a quick, quiet drink or two on your way somewhere else.

Review of Captain Kidd

13 Jul 07, 16:02

Small and perfectly formed riverside pub. 4*

This quaint pub on the riverside, made me think I was stepping back in time, it looks like it hasn't changed since the early 19th century, which I really like. Old half timbered walls, good ales and beers, historical pictures on the wall, it all made for a very cosy and warming experience. It is in a great location too, literally on the river, you can sit and watch the tide encroching on you, while you sup on your drink! There is also a generous outdoor seating area, which is well worth a visit in the summertime, a great place to relax and watch the world go by. They serve food, but only until mid afternoon, which is the only slight drawback I can see, otherwise, great!

Review of The Faltering Fullback

13 Jul 07, 10:06

Full (back) of character! 5*

The fullback is a great little oddity, meant in the best possible way! From the ivy clad exterior to the hanging bicycles and various nik naks the adorn the the ceiling, you have a sense that this is going to be a slightly different drinking experience. Wander through the pub to the back area and there is plenty of picnic bench seating with a pool table and quiz machines for your entertainment, as well as a large screen for any rugby or football games that may be on. There is a small kitchen which serves relatively inexpensive Thai food and some pub grub for when you get peckish. With the added bonus of a smallish, but perfectly formed outdoor seating area, this pub really does seem to have it all, and whats more, the place has a bit of soul about it, which is sadly lacking from a lot of pubs these days, give it a try and you will definitely be back!

Review of The Gatehouse

23 May 07, 16:55

Very good Wetherspoons 4*

Ive only been to The Gatehouse twice before, but both times I have enjoyed spending time in there. Unlike other Wetherpsoons pubs, there doesnt seem to be a 'rough' element to the place, this is perhaps because of it's upmarket location! Theres all the usual fair you get from your average Wetherspoons; good quality and range of ales lagers wines etc. without your high quality prices, the food selection is good and again not too pricey with the grill clubs and curry clubs offering good deals, but an added extra here is the decent sized beer garden, which are too few and too far between in London. Best of all is the fact that theres a small theatre upstairs, so you can have dinner and a show all in the same building, superb! Try it out!!

Review of The White Lion Of Mortimer

Leave Wetherspoons alone! 3*

I don't get why people are so down on Wetherspoons, it serves its purpose very well. My nearest is The White Lion and I'm not averse to popping in for a nice pint of Perry with a few friends. The food is ok if your hungry, and the layout isn't the worst Ive seen from a Wetherspoons. There is also a small outside area to enjoy the wether (!) if it permits and the front patio doors open to bring the outside in! Overall, there are better places to go, but there are a lot worse as well!

Review of Park Tavern

05 May 07, 19:14

Dingy 'local' pub 1*

When I walked past this pub and looked in I was willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. Sure it looked dark and empty, but I can quite like those kind of places. But when I walked in it was literally like a wild west saloon, the people that were in there looked round to the doorway and gave a disapproving look as if to say 'how dare you enter our pub!' The barmaid was at least slightly friendly towards us. The beer 'garden' that was advertised at the front was actually a very small back patio, which had to be accessed through the ladies toilets, nice! This place is not to be recommended.
