Review of Yates's Wine Lodge

Not the best pub in Lewisham 2*

I dunno, I used to work here so perhaps my view may be a little tainted but they let girls work until 1pm and didn't even provide a cab home! Also the 'cocktails' they made up for a Valentine's Day special were rubbish - one was just vodka and lemonade with a umbrella - how is that a cocktail? Where's the third spirit? Haha. Other than that, standard Yates' pub really, they are uninspirational at the best of times. Always busy though, if that's all you're looking for.

Review of Pets At Home

Animal supermarket - bit odd 2*

This is basically a superstore for pets and their accessories. They have chinchillas here which is possibly the most exciting animal. They also have a dog grooming parlour which is fun to have a squizz at on the way in. Also, a wide array of fish, though their advice is not the best. We bought a Japanese fighter fish here and they neglected to tell us they can’t live with certain shrimps. It did not survive, in fact that shrimp tore everyone up in the tank. I would expect the people to know more what they are talking about when recommending what species can live together. Though perhaps you compromise on expertise when you go to a pet ‘super’ store.

Review of Sir Robert Peel

29 May 08, 17:33

Rather ropey 2*

I have been to see a few bands here and they've been ok. But this joint is perhaps better known for it’s female, erm, exotic dancers performing on certain nights. Whilst I am intrigued about this side of the Peel's business, I am in no immediate hurry to rush over there and check them out. It is in the less desirable area of town so emerging after a late night out and having to pass the local estate on the way home isn't the most attractive prospect...

Review of Raynes Park Railway Station

15 May 08, 23:42

A bit dire 2*

This is a pretty dire railway station, in desperate need of a makeover. There are next to no shops inside, though the main entrance is positioned on the high street so I guess you do have places to dash across to to get provisions. The thing is, the station is characteristic of the area - dull! Also it just feels lonely and deserted, like some stations can do, especially at night.

Review of Strada

08 May 08, 17:41

Not the best 2*

I went to the Kingston Strada when it had just opened and was impressed by the size of this site. The ceilings are so high – hung with elaborate light fixings…it’s rather like a classy cow shed. However, the pizzas took a while to come and when they did they tasted a bit of cleaning products. I don’t know if it was the ‘stone-baked’ factor, or whether they were using brand new ovens, but either way it wasn’t the most pleasant experience, and I have been to Strada branches before where the pizzas tasted much nicer than that.

Review of Kingston Station

03 May 08, 10:42

Shabby looking 2*

This station is not badly run, it just looks a bit dated in comparison to a station like Wimbledon, it is quite obviously in need of an overhaul. They have a decent amount of automated ticket selling machines, but only one manned window which could be improved on. There are ticket checking machines in and out of the platform area. A few shops are dotted within the entrance area, to get snacks and newspapers, there is also a dry cleaners which is handy. Considering the amount of London commuters within Kingston, it does not get too overcrowded - because half of said commuters live closer to Norbiton and go there instead, which makes for an even spread.

Review of Chiquito Restaurant Bar

23 Apr 08, 09:00

Service a bit lacking 2*

This place was not at all busy when we went here for lunch, but they chose to sit us right at the back dark area of the restaurant, next to the toilets. They shouldn't have even had a table that close to the bathroom given the scale of the place. The food was ok, nothing special, I have never found a great Mexican restaurant and fear I will have to go to Mexico before I do. For the location of this place they could be trying to do a lot better.

Review of Puccino's

13 Apr 08, 19:05

Not brilliant food 2*

Puccinos is a strange kind of place, style over content springs to mind. They have strange squiggly framed line drawings on the wall and weird messages on the crockery like 'please smash your cup down really hard here' on the saucer. So the theme is some bizarre modern art concept which is mildly interesting but it's a shame the food isn't up to much. The names of the sandwiches again sound quite cool e.g. a 'manhattan' panini, but the chicken is cubed and suspiciously bernard matthew like. If all you're after is a coffee - their lattes are quite nice.

Review of Chez Lalee

12 Apr 08, 13:22

Nothing Special 2*

I love Mexican food, but why is it so hard to find a good Mexican restaurant? I find the fajitas or tacos that I make at home to be a better option than anything served to me in a restaurant. This restaurant is quite cramped, with tables shoved in around a small winding central staircase, but in an old building that I am pretty sure was once someone's home, this can be forgiven. What cannot be forgiven is that the chicken in our burrito was not breast (it was all stringy) and the service was slow. I repeat, nothing special.

Review of Wong Kei

09 Apr 08, 22:09

Cheap and not Cheerful 2*

I have given this two stars though I've been to this restaurant the most out of all the Chinese ones in Soho. Because of, you got it, the service which some people I am aware would be appalled at. They bark at you and practically throw your food at you, they even got T-Shirts printed to endorse their style of service, saying 'Upstairs' on one side and ' Downstairs' on the other. (I think you can purchase said shirts.) They know they're onto a winner and probably laugh at us, coming there to be abused...and with all those floors they must be raking it in!!! Good sweet and sour chicken though and my friends used to swear by the barbequed pork. However, next time I go I will be inspecting their menu for Shark Fin Soup as this MUST be taken off ALL Chinese menus before these animals are completely destroyed.
