Review of David Lloyd Leisure Club

30 May 08, 14:16

Nice pool 3*

David Lloyds are quite pricey, that's why I left them in favour of a much more reasonable one in the neighbouring town. The sales people are really pushy! I only went in there to have a look around and the next thing I knew I was signing a contract. However, this is a nice gym, it has all the standard fitness classes. I particularly liked the pool, which feels really private, in a room that lets in a lot of natural light from a high window, and is designed to permanently overspill (I think these are called eternity pools? Might have that wrong). They don't allow children in there at all, it's purely adults-only. The only thing is, it's pretty small for serious swimmers.

Review of The Kingston Tup

29 May 08, 14:03

Popular but pricey 3*

This is a good pub but a bit on the pricey side. It has salsa classes on a Monday, one of which I've been to and he's a good teacher. The food is fairly good also. I think it's run by Australians so it is big on screening all the big sports matches. The staff are pretty friendly and very efficient.

Review of Boots The Chemists

29 May 08, 13:56

handy 3*

This is a good Boots, large with plenty of staff on hand to help you out. It is always busy but the queues move quickly, and it's handy being so close to Charing Cross station (and bigger than the average in-station branch). I love their two for one offers and the advantage card is genius.

Review of Evans

29 May 08, 13:20

A little expensive 3*

Evans is situated in Kingston high street. Although I think it is the original ladies fashion store to do larger sizes I dont think it is the best. They do quite a wide range of different styles and fabrics but very rarely does something jump out and grab your attention. I think they are also on the pricey side. Bonmarche which is only a bus ride from Kingston do better clothes at a fraction of the price. I would not recommend this as the best store for larger women.

Review of The Albert

29 May 08, 09:02

Expensive! 3*

Well I suppose this IS the nearest pub to the Kingston entrance of Richmond Park and therefore they can charge what they like - but under £3 change of a tenner for 2 drinks? It is a nicely decorated place though, rustic mirrors and nice art on white and green walls. Downstairs are some interesting conservatory bits. They have a few tables outside on the ground level too which is good for summertime.

Review of Six Bells

28 May 08, 14:15

Not it's real name! 3*

This pub is now called The Honest Cabbage. It can be a bit scary in the sense that upon walking in all you get is stares off the locals...one of those joints that is almost TOO local, if that's possible haha. Women with goled 'mum' chains round their necks. Sometimes they sing karoake in there really badly. There is a Thai restaurant too, which I have not tried, but there's no way it's rivalling Kai's Thai in the Cricks, nohow.

Review of Post Office

28 May 08, 14:10

Busy busy busy 3*

This is a huge post office in a central location so you can't really expect it to be any less busy than it is at peak times like lunch. I do feel that the closing of the smaller ones everywhere will only serve to put more pressure on these larger ones. The queue for the windows is a perpetual massive snake but it slithers quickly. You can't even buy a lottery ticket or stamps quickly at the retail desk. The photo booth did not work when we needed it last - that was a poor show. And admittedly, it could do with a make over as the interior is basic and archaic.

Review of Subway

28 May 08, 14:01

Not bad 3*

Subways are pretty standard wherever you go - my rule is not to order anything which requires heating (other than toasting the cheese on the bread). The meat fillings like pizziola (or whatever it's called) don't taste great and are even worse when warmed rather than heated properly. I have heard tales of rats here but have never seen them, nor have I seen pigeons anywhere near the food. This Subway is more of a stall than a shop though, so you do wonder how safely the food is stored. When I go here for my 6 inch tuna on the odd occasion it's usually been fine. They take card payments now.

Review of Reflex The 80's Bar

27 May 08, 14:09

happy bar 3*

I really liked the fountain too - I remember stepping in it once when very drunk and had to go home with one wet foot. And yes, I would have said this bar is more known for the gay vibe than it being an 80's bar. It's a good place for a fun night out.

Review of Surbiton Flyer

25 May 08, 19:04

Bit on the rough side 3*

This pub is right on the high street in Surbiton, and the crowd is usually either really young or a bit rough, or both. Outside there once I saw some police whacking a guy to the floor and then chucking pepper spray at him, surrounded by a crowd of squawking women. It has live bands at the weekends, the one I went to see was a covers band.

Review of The Antelope

25 May 08, 18:48

Average boozer 3*

This pub is a favourite with the locals, you get crowds of blokes around the pool table singing along to the juke box - sounding a lot like bad karoake. Prices are quite high - typical of Surbiton. The toilets are quite ropey. They were showing the Eurovision on the screens when I was last in there, making for an interesting atmosphere...

Review of McDonald's Restaurant

22 May 08, 13:02

Busy for it's size 3*

Because of the location of this small franchise, right in the main shopping centre, it is common to see people sat outside on the floor with their burgers when seating inside has run out. It is one of two McDonald's in Kingston and both are run as they tend to be run - quick, no frills service. The front of this one is yet to be redecorated in the new healthier looking green and wood effects...

Review of Berties Wine Bar

20 May 08, 18:00

Underground bar 3*

Yes Bertie's is always very busy. The location is very central, it is a small lower level bar behind KFC on the High Street. It's a very popular place to drink for teens-twenty year olds. Not bad at all as wine bars go.

Review of China World

20 May 08, 14:16

Good chinese food 3*

Very nice Chinese take-away. They deliver or you can collect. Free prawn crackers while you wait, nice seats and magazines and papers to read. No fuss, no frills, good food and good service. I worked here a couple of times when it was under previous ownership...it has always been a busy, successful place.

Review of The Pier

15 May 08, 23:53

Nice Furnishings 3*

This is a good store, a nice place to shop for gifts. They sell household furnishings - a few items however seem a little on the pricey side for what they are made of. You can get cushions, candlesticks, dressers and tables - most with tasteful designs and colours. Definitely worth a visit.

Review of The Agricultural

13 May 08, 17:54

Lovely bar 3*

This is a very nice bar near the market and shopping centre in Angel. In response to Harry C above - I had a drink there the other night in balmy weather and it was really nice...large windows stood open to let the air in and big easy chairs to lounge in. They even have a couple of tables outside. And grolsch on tap alongside other good lagers and bitters.

Review of Wagamama

13 May 08, 17:50

Good for before a movie or gig 3*

This Wagamama is very convenient for combination with a cinema trip or a gig at the Carling Academy. The service is standard to the brand - efficient and no nonsense. My meal (yaki soba) came pretty quickly. I like the window benches for a people-watching view whilst you dine. For a drink with a difference, you should try the elderlfower sparkling water - it's really good!

Review of Carling Academy

13 May 08, 13:07

Good live music venue 3*

This is a pretty decent, intimate venue, the sound is fairly good and the location is convenient, being right in Angel shopping centre. The bands that play here are usually affordable too, and you also get gigs sponsored by people like XFM, for which you can win tickets. I’ve seen Athlete and Keane here, both of whom were excellent. The beer used to be Carling only – but now they serve three others on tap too, including Grolsch which is always good.

Review of Maxwells

10 May 08, 11:36

Nice hamburger joint 3*

Went here on a summer's day which wasn't the best choice as we had to sit inside (there are only two tables outside) and it's pretty dark. But the hamburgers were pretty nice and the service was quick and with a smile I thought. Of course, it's London prices - so a hamburger with chips and a salad is a tenner. Though being literally just off Covent Garden market so you can't complain!

Review of Costa

07 May 08, 18:17

Nice coffee shop 3*

I like Costa coffee - it is smooth and rich and they serve great paninis, biscuits and cakes to accompany your drink. This branch is in the great marketplace area of Kingston - go there for lunch and have a nice relaxed time in the easychairs with a window view!

Review of Pret A Manger

06 May 08, 23:38

Fast fresh food 3*

This is a good Pret branch, large with quite a bit of seating and very effiicient staff as is customary of the brand - it gets busy but the queues move so quickly you don't notice it. I go here a lot as it is one of the closest to where I work. My favourite sandwich is the chicken and avocado, but the wraps are good too - especially the veggie avocado one and the hoisin duck one. The new hot wraps are worth a try too. And the vegetable crisps - mmmm!

Review of Paignton Pier

05 May 08, 23:01

Usual piery kinda stuff! 3*

I could spend all day on those two-pence machines couldn't you? Why are we not clever enough to figure out that the idea is that no matter how long you spend trying to get the money to fall, you'd always feed everything you win back into it so as to avoid carrying around a bunch of coppers for the rest of the day? Answer: probably because you're under ten years old! This pier has the usual vast range of computer games and gambling for prizes - it's like Vegas for kids! Candy floss and fish n chips are up for grabs too. The trampolines and inflatable slides at the end of the pier are much healthier fun for the family!

Review of Isaac Merritt

05 May 08, 22:52

Good cheap pub! 3*

This is a wetherspoons pub so boasts the usual great prices, a round in there for four people gives you change of a tenner - it's awesome! It is very quiet though - no music playing and no juke box unfortunately. The location is a way off the sea front though, so Isaac Merritt attracts more local people than tourists, which is a nice change. The staff are very friendly and efficient. Definitely worth a look if you're after a great value pint.

Review of KFC New Malden Restaurant

03 May 08, 12:06

Fried Chicken 3*

This KFC is quite small, and no different to any other really, in the 13 different herbs and spices on the menu. The staff have been a bit slow and dopey in the past when I've visited. What makes me laugh is the sepia pictures of happy children on the walls, eating chicken drumsticks which are the only objects in the picture in colour - quite surreal! There's nothing like luring in the young to a fried food addiction.

Review of Waterloo Railway Station

03 May 08, 11:04

An institution! 3*

The scale of Waterloo is astounding, as Faith says it gives you access to many destinations especially the nice beachy provinces of the South coast. I am upset that they moved the Eurostar away from here to Kings Cross, I think Waterloo was a fine home for it and the relocation was another tiresome waste of money. It has so many shops and a good few cash points, that you won't get bored even if you have ages to wait for a train. The only thing is, it takes forever to get through the platform gates. People, rather than machines, check your tickets (really annoying when it comes to manual oyster readers which take more than 3 seconds to operate!) and the gates are badly managed, they could do a better job of managing people travelling in one door and out of the adjacent. Or if using one door - making people wait until disembarking passengers have exited before letting the new boarders in. Instead, they let everyone jam through in both directions. Apart from that, it's fine! There are ticket selling machines and windows galore and station information agents everywhere too.

Review of Charing Cross Railway Station

03 May 08, 10:51

Crowded but well run 3*

For the most part, the trains run smoothly from this really busy station, which is popular for it's quick direct links to Waterloo and London Bridge. There are a few shops to mosey around, even a pub if you have the time for a drink, and lots of eateries like The Upper Crust if you want to grab something. There are ticket checking machines here before the platform areas. They often close one of the entrances when it's raining as the floor gets slippery, which causes congestion but you are always people dodging in here anyway so you just have to deal with the traffic and get on with it!

Review of Holland & Barrett

02 May 08, 21:04

Shop there but please protest against their shark cartilage products! 3*

This is a high street chain selling health products of many different brands. They stock eveything from herbal teas and cereal bars to vitamins to dietary supplements such as milk thistle. The best thing is probably their huge bottles of evening primrose oil capsules that always seem to be on special offer. However, on the negative side they sell shark cartilage capsules which have absolutely no proven health benefits and are causing the unecessary wide spread massacre of a now very endangered species.

Review of All Bar One

27 Apr 08, 13:30

Very central and bustling 3*

This is a really popular and crowded branch of the chain as it's situated right on Leicester Square, but if you do manage to get a seat outside in the summer, it's a nice place to hang out and soak up the atmosphere. The food is good, as at most All Bar Ones, and the tapas are a decent size. Go as early as you can to get a seat, either inside or out!

Review of West Cornwall Pasty Co

27 Apr 08, 13:01

Great Pasties 3*

Delicious pasties as usual from this successful chain! I recommend the vegatable ones, from which there are quite a few to choose - cheese and onion, cheese and vegetable, cheese basil and tomato...And the hot drinks are good too, they give you loyalty cards to get your 5th pasty and hot drink for free. This is a take away place, but in the summer the West Cornwall Pasty Co do have seating outside in the marketplace, which makes it a nice place to sit and soak up the atmosphere, and watch the small children play in the water feature on the square!

Review of Frangos Restaurant

27 Apr 08, 12:36

Chicken restaurant - familiar style! 3*

Frango's is a bit of a rip off of Nando's to be honest, though the format works and they seem to have pulled it off somehow. They market their chicken as 'flame-grilled' to draw attention away from the fact that the dishes, marinades and accompaniments are very similar, as is the way you order your food. It is one of the more decent restaurants in Kingston's Rotunda centre for sure, however, alongside Pizza Express and Finesse.

Review of Haagen Dazs

23 Apr 08, 13:04

Good social venue 3*

This Haagen Daz Café is right on Leicester Square so it’s a great location and a good place to meet friends if you are out at one of the cinemas for a film, and don’t want to necessarily drink beforehand. The prices are pretty steep but no more than you’d expect from the brand, they do lovely hot chocolate and milkshake blends. The venue is spacious with views of the square, it’s a nice place to hang out. You can get take-outs too, the queues for this can be long in the summer.

Review of Supercuts

19 Apr 08, 19:42

Pretty good hairdressers 3*

If you want a reasonably priced haircut, this isn't a bad joint. I've had a cut by two different stylists in here and they were both good cuts. The value you can tailor yourself - if you want to go super cheap you can even opt not to have your hair dryed to take money off the price! It works on a first come first serve basis, you put your name on the list and wait for the first available stylist (about 5 work at a time in peak periods). The queues can be long, it's just pot-luck really, I guess the best advice is to avoid weekends to wait for less time.

Review of Marquis Of Granby

19 Apr 08, 17:17

Popular pub 3*

This is one of Epsom's most popular pubs, it's always heaving at weekends. The staff are sometimes a little slow, considering the permanent queues at the bar. There is lots of outside drinking space, which is good, the best of which is round the right hand side towards the car park where the benches are a bit more secluded than those at the front on the main road. Average beer selection and prices.

Review of The Coal Hole

19 Apr 08, 16:47

Characterful pub 3*

This is a decent pub in a good location on its own on the Strand. It is dark inside and out, I like the mock-gothic exterior, it almost looks like the entrance to a ghost train ride. And the inside is nice and traditional, with booths and beams. You get larger than life characters in here, chatty local Londoners so it's a good place to go if you like random conversation with strangers. I have not tried the food but am determined to try the pies people have been raving about here!

Review of The Porterhouse

19 Apr 08, 16:38

Busy busy! 3*

This is a large, very popular Covent Garden venue. It gets manic and on the sub-terranean levels it's pretty much impossible to get a signal on your phone, which is irritating when trying to locate friends in there. But if you can handle pushing past people all night to get to the bar and then back to your spot (which is a given with London pubs of this scale) it'll be OK. A good move is to hire out a booth if you are going with a group (it doesn't cost anything to do this). An interesting feature for me was the positioning of the live band that started playing halfway through the evening when I was last there, they were stuck up on a tiny stage suspended behind the bar!

Review of The Comedy Pub

19 Apr 08, 00:08

Nice pub! 3*

This is a fine pub - and I am not a Sporrts fan, so offer you a non-sports related review. The food is good, offering many dishes as 2-for-1 so it is a good place to have lunch with a mate. When you go upstairs you have the offer of watching whatever match they are showing on the many screens, or you can have a game of pool of darts. The choice is yours! I like the old design of the building, with openable windows and classic booths.

S'ok 3*

This is not too bad for a standard P&P. The drinks are of the usual fine range and the venue is of the standard large, spacious feel. Fine for a visit if you know the format and are after what you are familiar with, though there are plenty more bars in the vicinity with more character...

I agree with Alina G, this is certainly in line with the brand - in that the venue is nice and spacious, clean and friendly. Review of Earl Beatty

15 Apr 08, 20:33

Good ole Beatty! 3*

The Earl Beatty is a nice family pub on a very small village high street, there is a real 'regulars' air about the place. The car park is a bit of a nightmare to navigate but there is plenty of free parking in the streets outside. And mostly the people who go there live close enough to walk. Pool table and beer garden are features at the Beatty.

Good massage therapy 3*

They do nice therapies here. I have had the lymphatic drainage massage - a very gentle one as it is designed to work on the delicate glands below the skin's surface - so relaxing. I've also had hopi ear candling by a very nice therapist there. They also do waxing and other beauty services. The place is very small (it is a converted Citizen's Advice Bureau) but it works.

Station Pub! 3*

This pub could not be closer to New Malden rail station, so if you're desperate for a drink either just before or after a train journey, here your place! Also good for meeting people who need a location close to the station. It can get busy at all times of day, and on every other level (staff, prices) it's not much above or below the other locals.

Review of Wheelwrights Arms

12 Apr 08, 17:31

Tiny old pub hidden amongst the shops! 3*

Now this is what I'd describe as an 'old man' kind of pub, although it was brightened with a decorative overhaul quite recently. The location is brilliant for a quick day time beverage, tucked away between Argos and Specsavers, and I think that's what gives it the proper 'local' feeling about it, the realisation that a good few geezers would happily stop off there whilst their wife is doing the shopping. There is a more pleasant and safe feel to this venue, than in some bigger places in the town centre.

Review of O'Neill's

12 Apr 08, 16:42

Late opener 3*

Haha, the choice of photo is interesting with roadworks outside! O'Neill's is a large, crowded pub just off the marketplace in Kingston. The benefit is it's late opening, though unless you are inside before 10.30pm, you will have trouble getting in, the queues form quickly. The atmosphere and staff are fine, as you can imagine it gets pretty packed and noisy as the night goes on. Sometimes there is live music, usually average covers bands. Not a bad Kingston drinking venue.

Review of The Goldsmiths Tavern

12 Apr 08, 15:54

Student late boozer 3*

This place used to be a gothic dream, opposite the equally gothic looking Venue (which I never actually went to). The GMT, as we used to call it, was full of punk rockers. There were hardly any chairs or tables inside, and everything was painted black. I wonder if it has been done up now? It was also a live music venue, one of a few in the student domain of New Cross Road. The good thing about it was that it stayed open after regular drinking hours. The Goldsmiths Tavern holds happy memories for me of my great student days...I'd be interested to know if it is still as dark and basic inside as it used to be!

Review of Il Capriccio Cafe

12 Apr 08, 14:43

Nice cafe 3*

This is at the end of Castle Street, heading the valley of the meditarranean style restaurants. Il Capriccio is a nice clean place with English breakfasts as well as the usual Italian foccacias and paninis. The prices are perhaps a little steeper than neighbouring cafes but the menu is more varied. It seems to be an all female team, who are very efficient. My favourites in here are the risottos, simple tasting and wholesome, as risottos should be!

Review of Odeon Cinemas

12 Apr 08, 14:13

Decent Cinema! 3*

I read somewhere once that Kingston was the flagship Odeon, which doesn't make sense when comparing it to Leicester Square where all the premieres are held. Maybe I dreamt it. Regardless, this is a huge Odeon with 14 screens and all mod cons. Great sound (if anything a little too loud in some auditoriums). The ticket queues are often long but they move quickly, and the kiosk has recently been refurbushed to make purchasing your popcorn and goodies more self-service and streamlined, too.

Review of The Kings Tun

12 Apr 08, 14:03

Cheap beer 3*

This is a Wetherspoon's pub so you can guess the vibe - huge expanse of floor space and cheap lager...I don't know how they manage with these prices when they always seem able to snap up the biggest and most desired locations...just shows you how we pay disgustingly more than we should in other bars. This pub is right near the station and opposite the Rotunda centre, housing the Odeon, a load of restaurants and a bowling centre, so it's a convenient place to have a preliminary drink when out with mates. I have only been in there a handful of times though, due to the fact that Kingston's rougher crowd seem attracted to it.

My Works' Local 3*

It's overpriced but the measures are big, so it's easy to get drunk. I like their White Zinfandel, it's like drinking squash...not many pubs serve that. They do jugs of Pimms in the summer. A man tried to sell my friend fish in there once, from inside his jacket. Another old vagrant-looking guy one night approached everyone rambling solely about football. You do get random characters wandering in. I guess a pub is made by the people who drink there, and as those are friends from work, its an ok place!!

Gym'll Fix It 3*

The Kinetika gym at the Malden Centre has been recently refurbished. The machines are fairly good although the warm downs on the programmes are not as good as the ones on the old treadmills/cross trainers. The staff are amiable and helpful. It gets really busy in the evenings so try and go at other times! The pool is pretty good, warm and large, and there is a junior teaching pool. My mum has recently learned to swim there and she rates it - small groups so lots of attention. There are good workout classes - my favourite is body balance.

Review of The Riverside Vegetaria

The clue's in the title! 3*

This is a great asset to Kingston, I do not know of anywhere else which offers purely vegetarian food and lots of vegan dishes too. The food tastes fresh, wholesome and nicely blended, and the prices aren't too bad considering the location - it literally backs onto the Thames so has views of the river. The design of the place is nice if a little cramped, it's a real old style restaurant with proper furniture and many artworks on the walls.

Review of Oceana

Dive In! 3*

I've only been here once - the decor is quite impressive in the themed rooms (boudoir, ski lodge etc) and the music is different in every one which is good, sometimes with good new live acts. Its got a meat market factor to rival The Works and is mostly quite a 'young people' place...on Wednesday's student night the queue goes round the block past the fallen telephone boxes.
