Review of The Larder

22 Jan 08, 16:05

Amazing sandwiches 5*

Okay, let me just say that I've never been to the restaurant part of The Larder just yet, but I have been to the sandwich shop part and wow, their food is fantastic!

I don't usually give out 5 stars to many places, but The Larder is now one of those places that I will definitely recommend. Everything is made with quality ingredients, the bread here is absolutely amazing with the best crust, they give out very generous portions of our sandwich fillings too. The other homemade foods, from the casseroles to the cookies, are also amazingly good too.

The sandwiches are quite expensive, but when you take into account the low prices of the sundries, getting your lunch here is no more expensive than going to Eat, Pret or the nearby Benugo. In fact, you can get a delectable lunch time meal and change from a fiver - what more could you ask for?

Review of Gerrys Off Licence

Awesome range of spirits 5*

Fed up with run-of-the-mill vodkas? Fancy trying something a bit new and different? Then Gerry's is the place to go.

You can't walk down Old Compton Street without noticing the people looking at all the strange spirits in the window, they sell everything from toffee flavoured Swedish vodka to expensive liqueurs, and when they recommend something, they're rarely wrong. For example, last visit I got a bottle of vodka because it was recommended in the window, even the guy behind the counter said it was an awesome vodka, and he wasn't wrong!

It's the only place in London where you can get quality imported spirits that taste amazing. Try it, you won't go wrong.

Review of Smiths Of Smithfield

11 Jul 07, 21:33

Great place 5*

I went to Smiths mainly due to most of the good reviews on here and other people's recommendations. You usually take things with a pinch of salt, thinking that places can't be as good as people say, that they're being slightly hyperbolical, but Smiths of Smithfield is one of those places that deserves the credit. It is the best meal that I've had in London so far.

Every course that I had was great, starting from the starter of bread and balsamic vinegar to the dessert of summer pudding. Even the wine was fantastic. The main course that I had was the chicken, leek and mushroom pie, with amazing pastry and even better filling. I can't think of anything bad about this place, even the price is pretty reasonable for what you get, which is high quality food, and a great night out.

Review of Slaughtered Lamb

05 Jun 07, 20:53

Great drinks, even better food 5*

The Slaughtered Lamb is a lovely little pub tucked away in the Clerkenwell / Farringdon area that has a great selection of drinks and an even better range of foods.

This place must be the only place in London that does Kirin Ichiban and Aspell Cider on tap, which is great for me, but if you're more a real ale fan, then there's also great ales (so I'm told... not really an ale admirer myself).

Now, even if you don't drink, you need to go here for the food. The dishes are something of a cross of pub grub and gastropub, but without the ridiculous price tag. Really well made pub food. They mainly specialise in fish, but do the pub classics - my particular favourite is the sausages and chips. The chips are done to perfection, the best for miles around.

It can get very busy here though, especially at lunch and weekends, which is testament to how popular it is in the area. If you really want to try the food, it's definitely worth reserving a table, but don't let it's busyness put you off going though.

Review of Salon 1

Salon 1: Number 1 5*

Good hairdressers are hard to find. You can go to places where they don't listen to you and they'll cut your hair exactly how they want it. Some places will cut your hair like you're some kind of sheep. Despite it's slightly cringe-worthy name, Salon:1 is my number one for hair. If you want a skinhead, then go to a cheap barbers as this is more a place for people who are bothered about their hair. Having generally bad hair, I never really know how I should ask for it, so I usually point at pictures and go "something like that". This time, I was told rather than cutting it in a style that wouldn't suit me, he cut my hair in a good, proper style that made me even more attractive to the ladies. I traveled an hour just to get there, and I definitely would again.

Review of Make Mine

Seriously amazing sandwiches 5*

One of the best sandwich shops in London. Expect thick soft white bread with a lovely crust, with a filling or three of your choice. My speciality choice is the ol' crispy bacon and sausage combo with brown sauce, done to perfection. Awesome for hangovers, extreme hunger or if you want to pig out. This is only £2.30 too. Amazing!

If you don't want to be a fat pig, they do salads and wraps too. Bit more expensive, but they are literally massive.

Review of Rough Trade Shop

12 May 07, 12:44

Alternative Heaven 5*

Rough Trade is the well known independent shop and record label famous for bands such as The Smiths, The Strokes and millions of other less famous alternative bands. Just like the record label, the Rough Trade shop specialises in the very best of indie. The staff are not your average HMV-type spotty oiks - they definitely know their stuff - and the range of music is unmatched in London. The place can be a bit cramped on the weekends, but if you go when it's quieter, you can get lost for an hour just browsing through a range of great CDs.

Review of Islington Green Dental Practice

11 May 07, 22:20

Recommended 5*

What with the NHS being in the state it is, when it was time for my yearly (well, 18-monthly) check-up, I found no dentists would take any adults on the NHS, so I decided to go private. Having never gone private before, I was expecting to get completely ripped off. Luckily I didn't. In fact, my check-up only cost slightly more than I would have expected to pay on the NHS, and rather than being treated like the next patient on a conveyor belt, I felt the dentist seemed genuinely interested in what was going on in my mouth. My teeth had never felt as clean and I could actually do one of those cheesey smiles like the people on the leaflets in the waiting room!

Review of Scotts Sandwich Bar

07 May 07, 12:58

Two thumbs fresh 5*

There's a lot of sandwich shops around town. Some being really good, some being... not so good. Luckily, Scott's is one of the really good ones. It's a cliche to say that it's like the sandwiches your mother used to make, but it's quite true in this case. Rather than boring, flimsy butties, you get big, chunky, delicious sandwiches that fill you up properly. No surprise that it's always busy there. They don't just do sandwiches either. They do jacket potatoes and a range of salads, all of which look very nice too. The price is quite reasonable at £3-4 a sandwich considering how large and how tasty they are. The staff are always friendly, if not a bit quick to ask what you're eating if you sit in.

Review of The Angel Curry Centre

07 May 07, 10:45

Currytastic! Highly Recommended! 5*

I like curry. You only have to look at me to know that. I also like trying out curry houses, and the Angel Curry Center is the one I keep going back to again and again. Let's not pretend the food is nouveau Indian cuisine or anything. It's not. It is, however, a great British curry, which would easily beat anything on Brick Lane. The staff are frighteningly nice - usually they give me free poppadoms with my takeaway, sometimes free poppadoms and drinks while I wait for my takeaway. The price is very reasonable too, usually can get 2 meals with sides for about £16, which is an absolute bargain once you realise how good the food actually is. If you're eating in the restaurant, then it's a good idea to go and bring some alcohol drinks along as they don't sell them, but there's plenty of off-licenses on Chapel Market, so that's not a worry. If you want a curry tonight, do yourself a favour. Go here.

Review of Foyles

02 May 07, 13:24

Best bookshop in town 5*

Foyles is possibly the largest bookshop in London with five floors of shelfs. With all these books, you'd think that it could get a bit disorganised. Luckily, it's one of the most organised and well laid out bookshops that I have visited. The range of books is huge and even the most specialised of subjects are well organised. The staff obviously know what books should be grouped together. The place never seems to feel too busy which is perfect for browsing books. Highly recommended.
