Review of Leon

Not as good as I expected 3*

I'd heard a lot about Leon, how the food was an experience to remember and that it would change lunchtimes forever, so as you can imagine, I was pretty enthusiastic about going there.

Walking into Leon is reminiscent of entering a bar in Shoreditch. Old wooden tables, plastic chairs and lots of quirky furniture decorate the place. The place is almost a haven from the sanitized lunch-time fare you get in the City.

The food, while enjoyable, wasn't as amazing I was led to believe. I had meatballs and rice, which was nice, but rather plain. You can tell the ingredients are of high quality, but it isn't exactly a party in your mouth.

Although the food isn't too pricey, £5.65 for a large meatballs, they seems to cover their costs by charging £2 for a bottle of coke, which is completely over the top. I would have smuggled in a can from the newsagents if I'd known!

Overall, it was a nice place to eat, just not as good as I had hoped for.

Review of Giraffe

Mmmm... chips 3*

My missus had recommended that we go to Giraffe for tea as she visited the branch in Marylebone and enjoyed it. From the outside, it looks like quite a posh bar, but inside, the feeling is definitely more Wagamama crossed with a children's jungle adventure play park.

The food was good, we shared a meze for starter, which for £6 was a bit of a rip off considering the amount of food there was. I was expecting a mountain of meze-tastic food. Instead, it was a bit of hummus, one falafel and some salsa. I could go to Gallipoli around the corner and get ten times more meze for £10. Anyway, I digress.

For the main course, I had a burger and chips. The chips were possibly the best I'd had for some time. The burger was nice, nothing particularly special, but definitely edible after a long day shopping. It was pretty expensive though at about the price of 3 and a bit meal deals at McDonalds. The list of drinks wasn't amazing either, especially if you don't want a cocktail.

I know I've had a bit of a moan, but I did enjoy going there. It's a bit dearer than I would have liked, but worth it for those chips... mmmm... chips.

Review of The Sequel

Cheap and cheesy 2*

I have a mate who swears by this place - he found it by wondering around the streets of Angel looking for a place to eat after only a day in London, but he keeps going back and back to this place. He can't get enough of it. He sometimes comes from Fulham just to visit.

When I finally joined on one of his expeditions, I coudn't see what the fuss was about. The food, mainly Italian-based, was very average. I think I could cook better food without trying. The ingredients didn't seem to be of particularly high quality either, but then it is pretty cheap anyway.

If you're a fan of cabaret, then you'll probably like this place, but, if, like me, you think cabaret is a bit cheesy and cheap, then you won't really like the entertainment they put on.

I can see why this place is popular, if you like cheap pasta and cheap entertainment, then you'll love it. If you're not as keen on either of those, then you'll probably not enjoy it.

Review of Hoxton Apprentice

Second time disappointing 2*

The first time I came here was about a year ago, and it was one of the best meals I've had in London. Would have been a five star review. However, second time I visited, for my birthday, it was a disappointment.

The menu had completely changed from the first time and had gone decidedly downmarket (e.g. from prime beef to steak and chips). My steak was so tough that I couldn't physically cut through half of it and being a posh restaurant, the portions are small, meaning that you're still hungry when you leave. Not a satisfying birthday meal...

Apart from the food, everything is great. The place is nice, the wine is really good and the waiters are pleasant. I just really hope that they change their menu back to what it was, as it was so much better.
