Review of Amalfi

20 Jul 07, 17:34

Fun and friendly 3*

Amalfi is a bit of an institution on Old Compton Street - I remember going there for the first time about 10 years ago.

It's not 5-star cuisine, but then the prices aren't 5-star prices, either. It's simply good, old-fashioned local Italian, yet in the centre of Soho.

It's also vast, but you don't always notice that, because there are lots of nice little alcoves. Even had a Christmas party there one year - weird, but entertaining!

Review of Crystal Palace Dental Practice

Still does NHS 4*

This is still an NHS dentist, which is a blessed relief.

It's also extremely efficient and I have been very impressed with the service. OK, so I've got good teeth, but the cleaning, polishing, etc couldn't have been better.

Review of T Chabuk

Quaint little surgery 3*

This is actually Rosendale Surgery - one of those practices that are slowly being phased out. It's small, local and very accommodating.

They're always oversubscribed and have people on a waiting list. Doctors, receptionists and ancilliary staff are all lovely.

It was a shame to leave when we moved

Review of Vasos Gents Hairdressers

Does what it says on the tin 4*

I worked in the area for 4 years and this was my regular place for a short back and sides.

The entrance is pretty unprepossessing (down a narrow staircase), but the service and conversation more than make up for the odd location.

You won't get David Beckham's new look (but then would you want to?), but you will get a good-quality hair-cut at a great price.

Review of Fujiyama Noodle Bar

Don't expect luxury 3*

This is a cheap and cheerful Japanese restaurant that is never a letdown.

You are usually squeezed in next to complete strangers, but the food is of top quality - they also do take-away, which is great!

Review of Olleys

19 Jul 07, 16:21

Haven't found better 5*

Olley's is already pretty famous, as fish and chip shops go. It does eat-in and take-away and both are superlative.

Why is it so good? OK, everything is cooked fresh, for starters.

It's not just cod, haddock, chips and mushy peas. They have a variety of different fish (v important in these eco-friendly times) and cook them in a variety of different ways.

Still not convinced? Turn up and check out the constant flow of traffic in and out. If that's not a recommendation, I don't know what it is

Review of George Frewing and Son

19 Jul 07, 16:16

Thoroughly professional and helpful 4*

I don't know about you, but I hate putting my car in for a service or to get work done. I'm convinced that mechanics will try to fleece me and charge me over the odds.

As the name of Frewing & Son suggests, they've been going for a while. They're professional, honest, efficient and, best of all, reasonably priced. Highly recommended
