Review of The Flower Garden

Great local florist 4*

We all need a nearby florist where you can pick up a top-notch bouquet at the last minute that doesn't scream petrol station. Well, this place is great. Just round the corner from my old job, I used to get flowers there for my other half "just because". The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and take their time making up your flowers. What's more, it's not as expensive as some of the more well-known places further into town.

Review of The Dartmouth Castle

06 Aug 07, 21:37

Pleasant gastropub 3*

Ten years ago, The Dartmouth Castle was a wonderfully old-school, pool-table-containing, beer-swilling local, run by a benevolent Irish landlord. Then the money moved in and it changed for, some might say, the better. To be honest, old-man pubs (as I like to call them) are very out of fashion, so the DC in its new guise is very 2007! There's a nice outdoor space at the front, the road shielded by a neat hedge (sadly, it doesn't drown out the traffic, though). The wine list is fairly extensive, the food menu is very gastropub (lots of trendy antipasti, non-potato mash and jus) and there's even two bitters on offer. All in all, pretty OK - it just doesn't inspire. There are plenty of similar pubs and, while the DC is good enough, it just doesn't stand out.

Review of Ziads

Bog-standard barbers 3*

Ziad's is a cheap and cheerful barber that will give you a good haircut.

Nice fixtures and fittings, adequate selection of magazines and newspapers and inoffensive music TV playing in the corner.

I've never had a bad haircut here, but then I've never had a great one, either. The staff are pleasant, without being engaging, or even that friendly.

If you literally want a short back and sides, it's good enough!

Review of The Old Parrs Head

Great Thai food 4*

Nestled in the back streets of Olympia and Brook Green, The Old Parrs Head is one of those pubs that offers more than its exterior promises. There's a good selection of beers and they do a fantastic Thai menu, which is fast, tasty and also reasonably priced. What's more, not only are there tables dotted around outside, but there's also a large beer garden tucked away out back, which on sunny lunchtimes, is a beautiful sun-trap.
