Review of The Rosendale

08 Apr 08, 22:03

Smart, chic makeover 4*

Not that many moons ago, The Rosendale was a tired, unimpressive pub that struggled to get a regular clientele.

It's been taken over and revamped in the past year as a smart, chic gastropub and is set to win awards a-plenty.

There's a bar menu that is both affordable and good quality, but it's where the bar ends and the restaurant starts that the biggest change is evident.

The decor is dark wood and large tables (a blessed relief, compared with many similar places) and the menu is very 21st century - full of 'clever' words like 'chiboush' or 'remoulade' and with prices to match.

However, the food more than delivers. The South African chef influences the menu with things like ostrich, which was sublime.

Puddings are possibly what lets the side down and it's a little pricey, considering it's a long way out of the centre of town (an easy £50 a head before wine), but it's near Dulwich, so I guess it'll find the market!

Review of Cafe Rouge

Excellent, even though a chain 4*

Cafe Rouge is a bit of an institution in the UK now. It serves "french" cuisine for the masses and can be a hit and miss, depending on the individual restaurant you choose. This one in West Dulwich is a delight. Always buzzing, with polite, friendly staff, it's the perfect place for a quick lunch, afternoon drink or even an evening meal. The menu is no different to all Cafe Rouge, but no worse for that. The steak is great, as are many of the salads and the Salmon fish-cakes. Best of all, it has a beautiful little garden out the back, which is great in the summer. Only downside - a tendency to be full of braying Dulwich types, but that's a minor quibble!

Quaint little surgery 3*

This is actually Rosendale Surgery - one of those practices that are slowly being phased out. It's small, local and very accommodating.

They're always oversubscribed and have people on a waiting list. Doctors, receptionists and ancilliary staff are all lovely.

It was a shame to leave when we moved

Review of George Frewing and Son

Thoroughly professional and helpful 4*

I don't know about you, but I hate putting my car in for a service or to get work done. I'm convinced that mechanics will try to fleece me and charge me over the odds.

As the name of Frewing & Son suggests, they've been going for a while. They're professional, honest, efficient and, best of all, reasonably priced. Highly recommended
