Review of The Monument

22 Aug 07, 18:05

Hidden and forgotten tourist gem 5*

When I was a kid, we all used to talk about climbing up the Monument - with its 200-odd steps, it was a test of endurance, plus you got a wicked view of the City of London. Fast forward 30 years and times have changed - people pay £15 to travel on a glorified Ferris wheel which, although it gives good views, does attract the sort of tourist that most of us quietly despise. So, let's hear it for one of the more old-school of London's "attractions". It's cheap (£1.50 last time I went up), it gets you fit and you still get a cool view, which also gives you an idea of how London looked centuries ago, and what's been added to the skyline.
