Review of The Pilgrim

25 Apr 08, 15:05

join the pilgrims 2*

The Pilgrim is a real hit with the locals, the cheap beer, good atmos and a variety of music. real positve of this place is the cheap food made in the cantine like kitchen towards the back of the pub. The cooks are all friendly when they serve you and its much like being cooked for by your mum!

Its a great place to meet friends before a big night out, or simply go for a quite pint two.

One night in particular is the 'open mic' on a sunday, this allows for some of liverpools more colouful characters to showcase their singing talents which makes for an enjoyable evening.

Overall an excellent local, with cheap beer, and a relaxed atmosphere.

Review of Hogshead Pub Company

25 Apr 08, 14:57

hog rost? 3*

The Hogshead is located on Corporation Road right in the centre on Middlesbrough, if you have trouble finding it look for the Centre north East building and its fairly close. The pub is normally always busy primarily due to its location, it is not a modern an chic club like a lot in Middlesbrough these days, it is a traditional pub that serves typical pub lunches. I have eaten here several times as I use to work in the vicinity, they are ideal if you are on a lunch break as most of the food arrives in about 20 minuets. They offer a good range of specials at reasonable prices. On an evening I haven’t actually went here drinking, it strikes me more of an older generation place, the décor is quite nice but again not really aimed at the younger generation, it is wooden throughout and quite a dark pub. Great place to stop and have a pint and a burger during the day

Review of Isaac Wilson

25 Apr 08, 14:53

The wilsons! 4*

The Isaac Wilson is a traditional Weatherspoon put, very unlike the more modem chain Lloyds. This pub is located near the train station in Middlesbrough as very accessible. One of the selling points for the Isaac Wilson’s is the menu, like most Weatherspoons they offer a great range of buy one get one free on the menu, This particular establishment is quite bit and set up like any other Weatherspoons, dark wooden chairs and tables with a lack of frills. I love eating here but it become very apparent that the same people sit in the same seats day after day, without being ageist it tends to be old men congregating and spending the afternoon drinking. Perhaps the biggest downfall of the Isaac Wilson’s in my opinions is the fact that they don’t play any music. Not really sort of pub but great if you want cheap food

Review of Doctor Browns

25 Apr 08, 14:51

browns 2*

Doctor Brown has managed to maintain and sustain the image of a traditional English pub, even though it is Located in the heart of Middlesbrough. To the modern eye the pub looks quite outdated and old fashioned but that seems to be eh appeal of the drinkers. It is very near the riverside so it is ideal for a few drinks on a Saturday if you are off the watch the Boro play. Quite often on a Saturday it seems to be backed full of Boro fans, probably due to the large TV so everyone can watch the game, this is possibly its busiest day. On a Friday night Doctor Browns quite often get live acts to play, the pub itself is not overly large so those that do play are normally just local. They offer a wide variety of drinks, unfortunately I have never eaten here before so I am unable to comment not the food, if you are in the area you should drop in and have a look

Review of The Hairy Lemon

25 Apr 08, 14:51

love the lemon 3*

The Hairy Lemon is located right in the centre of Middlesbrough, I have always noticed the bar and though it to be a bit peculiar due to its name. I started working in close proximity of the bar so I and a friend quite often went over there for our lunch. The menu was typical of a small bar offering various burgers, pasta and a few traditional dishes. The reason we went her was due to the speed of the service. The food and drinks always came relatively quick, there was normally not a great deal of people there but many of those who were out to lunch were doing so from work. The décor to be honest is a bit out dated and is very dark and dingy. Being in such a prime location this facility could offer a lot more if it was revamped. In saying that I have gone here for a few drinks on an evening and business seems to be quite steady anyway. It is reasonably priced and has a juke box so the music is selected by the people. Staff was always friendly and polite and willing to talk.

Review of Walkabout Inn

25 Apr 08, 14:50

love it 2*

Walkabout is one of my favourite pubs in Middlesbrough; it is located under the Centre North East building so it is pretty difficult of miss. Walkabout is a chain of Australian pubs and they are increasing popular throughout the UK. This walk about is a massive open complex with a huge bar, it is extremely busy during the day for lunches and on weekends you quite often have to squeeze your way through to the bar. Perhaps one of the felling points of this bas is the menu, they claim to offer typical Australian dishes such as a crocodile filled and a kangaroo burger. I have never eaten either dishes but the novelty seems to attract many people. The pub has a massive function room about it which is quite often used for private parties, I have been to an engagement party there and it will fit many guests. Walkabout pulls in a variety of people, quite a lot of students and a lot of younger people that are out for a good night, as far as I remember it has a late licence remains busy right till the end of the night.

Review of Star & Garter

25 Apr 08, 14:49

the star 3*

The Star and Garter was one of my favourite little pubs when I was a t University in Middlesbrough, like a lot of other establishments is located in the heart of the university. The pub itself looks very much like a standard local pub that has the same drinkers every day. Its location means that as well as havening locals it also has a massive student base. They offer a wide range of food and very good prices. On a Sunday the offer a carvery where there is such a good selection that you can’t help leaving absolute full. I would recommend getting there early as it is very popular and sometime you might have a bit of difficulty getting a table. The carvery is very reasonably priced and I’m not sure it is aimed at students but it certainly pulls them in.

Review of The Red Lion

25 Apr 08, 11:01

Bit of a Dive 1*

A great local pub but all in all a bit of a dive. The atmosphere is friendly and its got a very local vibe going on. Quite a quiet pub with a smalll scrappy yard out thee back for smoking. Normal prices, I wouldn't advise going there alone.

Go take a look for yourself, it's quite funny in a way.

Review of Old Manor

24 Apr 08, 15:04

The ultimate Town pub 5*

The manor always offers a wide range of friendly faces along with a selection of very well priced Lagers and Ales. They have a very good quality menu and the food never takes longer than 15 mins. You must also check this place out on christmas eve. There's an unofficial oldschool Bracknell reunion.

Nice pub, get my vote.

Review of Bar Mango

24 Apr 08, 14:54

DIRTY ELECTRO 5*

What a messy night ! This place BANGS out some filthy house on the weekends. Fridays are mainly progressive House but Saturdays they really crank it up a notch and serve up a blend of Dirty Electro Techy House. The best night out in reading if you like modern dancefloors and the slightly underground scene.

Atmosphere it quite friendly! Check it out.. It beats all the bars that play pop R N B and call themselves clubs..

Review of Dogma

23 Apr 08, 12:26

Nice Modern Bar 4*

The music in Dogma can be quite diverse at times but you can always garantee a few comercial songs by the time the night's out.

Nice area downstairs for drinking while the upstairs is a full blown stomp.

Check it out, it's one of the better places in Reading.

Review of Revolution Bar

23 Apr 08, 12:20

A nice little bar , something for everyone 4*

Revs is a young bar, packed on the weekends full with glammed up ladies. The music is usually banging but very commercial weather it's dance or R n B.

You shouldd make sure you're there early to avoid the 1 in one out polocy that kicks in at between 11 and 12.

All in all a top evening with a very modern feel.
