Review of Maries Cafe

sue is the queen of toast and tea 4*

I used to live next door to Maries Cafe on Lower Marsh..... it's fabulous - from the 1960's signage to the dark brown tea and great fry ups that Sue and her family serve up. In the evenings Sue dishes up a good range of cheap and cheerful thai food. High cabbie count.

Review of Barbers Point

like having your hair cut by the family 4*

the atmosphere is great - friendly chat, they remember who you are and they do your hair well. It's not cheap but then again where is in the centre of London. Sue and Alison have ruled the roost here for years and years.....

Review of The Royal Albert Hall

ClassicFM Live! 4*

We went to classicFM live last night - was quite an etertaining concert - but be warned to check your order form if you're ever ordering catering..... the cheese plate for 8 people was lovely on the cheese front, but sadly lacking on the cracker front - just 6 crackers for 8 people ...... SHAME!

Review of The Hospital

funky - ish 3*

It's very smart, very good for business meetings and the upstairs bar is great.

There are a few niggles - the outside balcony is tiny, the food is ok but won't blow you away, and some of the seats are uncomfortable. As it's so big there are times when some of the spaces seem a bit empty - but that can be good if you want some privacy.

Seems to be busiest during the day when people use it as a business base for doing interviews and meetings.

Review of Maison Bertaux

23 Feb 08, 17:56

ooh la la! 4*

magnificent cakes, like walking into a scene from an art house movie - all pink chiffon and french chintz everywhere..... r the who place is overseen by a wonderfully barking english lady who dresses and acts like an eccentric french widow.

I bought a big plum and almond tart for a dinner party - it had just been baked and was all rather lovely - if not a bit pricey at £25 - but it would have fed 12 easily.

the service was great - complete with the elaborately tied pink ribbon around the cake box

apparently the place has been there since the 1920's and judging by the clients I reckon it might feature highly in Japanese cook books.

Review of The Rock and Sole Plaice

I'm not so sure,,,, 3*

I think you need to check out superfish in waterloo - it's much better!! for example, the haddock is HUGE and there are more fat cabbies dining there - which is proof if needed

Review of National Portrait Gallery Restaurant

16 Feb 08, 09:37

nice view.... shame about the food and service 2*

The view here is amazing - endless vista of london and you can look at Lord Nelson in the eye from this restaurant at the top of the National Gallery..... it;s a great venue and as a result it's always packed at lunch times.

Issue is that the the service and food just don't live up to the rest of the package..... always seems understaffed and slow, and the food, promising a lot in terms of descriptions has never added up for me.

Anyway - worth a wonder in just to see the vista!

Review of Cork and Bottle Wine Bar

14 Feb 08, 18:33

dingy yet appealing 3*

tucked away under a sex shop off Leicester Square this is like a 70's throw back with wonderfully dated murals on the wall, checked red table cloths and wine bottles with candles in them.....

Review of Fantasy Cleaners

06 Feb 08, 07:01

not as expensive as it looks 4*

Has to be the best organised dry cleaners in london.... you go in and give your mobile number and all items are added to a database.

The whole place looks smart and well branded - you expect it to be very expensive - but it's not..... :-)

They do a shirt ironing service as well a bit like an american cleaners, where they deliver your shirts back to your house, but I've never used it
