Review of Escapade

30 Aug 07, 12:49

Like a TARDIS 4*

The shop itself is very small, but the basement must be huge because it has almost all of their items in stock. Prices are much more expensive in the shop than on the website, so if you have time your best course of action is to go to the shop to decide what you want and then go home and order it online.

Changing rooms for you to try on items and staff are more than happy to let you do this, even with several different outfits.

Accessories are all on the shop floor and are wide ranging, particularly themed around the time of year. Prepare for it to be busy around Hallowe'en!

Staff are helpful and friendly. A good tip is to get one of Escapade's own outfits rather than one they have bought in. Outfits from films etc hover around the £40 mark but their own costumes are much cheaper.

Review of The Dignity

Spacious bar 3*

The decor and the ambience suggest they're going for more of an up-market bar feel than a pub. The music is unintrusive, the seats are comfortable and spaced out and the lighting is dark and almost romantic. A nice place to go with a friend if you were looking for a quiet chat. The bar is fairly big and seems to have a wide selection, and the staff are good.

Hosts a popular Pub Quiz on Tuesday nights which tends to get a lot of people in, particularly as the host really gets into it (and has his own site for it: http://www.myspace.com/izzywizzyquizzy).

Good location for transport, close to Finchley Central station, outside a bus stop (which has the N20 for night)

Review of Eat

Eat? Don't mind if I do.. 4*

Popular lunchtime eaterie especially with the Irish Embassy workers directly next door. Has a lovely selection of sandwiches and drinks, highly recommended is the Peach and Mint Blast.

Seated area is always clean and has a very innovative bag security system on the tables, a bit difficult to get it off yourself but that's preferable than having your bag swiped.

Staff are always friendly, and the music is always good.

Review of Quadruples

Very modern, delicious food, reasonable prices 4*

This is a cafe/restaurant/bar doesn't really belong in Finchley, would feel much more at home in Central London.

Still, this isn't a negative. The food ranges from salads, to sandwiches, to pizzas, to meals. The pizzas are well worth trying, toppings are whatever you like and they're cooked in stone-baked ovens. Always tastes delicious, and there's usually things to sample on the counter at lunchtimes.

Has a licence if you feel like a drink with your meal, which is recommend as there is a fair bit of seating and the decor is very stylish, if not a little dark.

Staff have always been friendly, patient and helpful.

Prices are a little more expensive than the other cafes on the High Street but this is definitely a case of "you get what you pay for", the food is worth the money.

Review of The Science Museum

18 Aug 07, 14:32

Best day out in London to suit anyone 5*

It's a great shame that the word "Science" will put so many off going to the Science Museum. Far from nerdy or geeky, it's a great day out for any group of people. There is something for everyone, even the kids can have hours (literally) of fun.

For the adults there is guaranteed to be something of interest in all the floors, and the Wellcome wing at the end of each floor has lots of hands on games. The iMax theatre often has something 3D on for under a tenner, and considering entrance is free it's a small price to pay. Similarly there is a fun simulator for about a fiver.

The kids will enjoy the games in the Wellcome wing and also the educational Basement, with lots of science based games.

Cafes are overpriced, as with any London eatery. Bring your own food.

The fun even continues when you get home as a lot of the attractions will put your photos online if you put your email address in.

Review of Gosdens

Friendly local newsagent 4*

Run for many years by a very friendly Indian couple, stocks magazines, snacks, cards and some stationary.

Has a photocopier, which they are happy to help you use. Also delivers local papers very early, and has a large window in which you can display advertisements.

Review of Elegance Hair & Beauty

Better for beauty than for hair 2*

This local hairdressers has a very modern and attractive design with a purple theme. They probably ought to have spent more money on training their hairdressers than the layout however.

If you are not fussy about your haircut, it can be an inexpensive way to get a fair trim. Do not trust them to do any decent cut or style, you may be disappointed.

The beauty treatments have been acceptable, they may take longer than in other salons but as long as you are not on a schedule you'll come out with the same job.

Review of Cafe Burnaz

17 Aug 07, 16:33

Good for a fry-up 3*

This small cafe is as you would expect any small greasy spoon to be. It is run by a friendly couple who do a great Full English breakfast with everything.

A wider range of proper meals is available, though I do not expect many people opt for this.

Review of Toolans

Lively pub 3*

Favoured watering hole of the sixth formers of the local schools at the weekend, which encourages a good atmosphere, particularly as there is often a DJ or live band on Fridays.

However it is a fairly small pub, with no garden and limited seating. Therefore it's usually better to start the night here and head somewhere else.

The barstaff are fine and the drinks are good.

Review of Autumn House

Loud and Uncomfortable 1*

Music loud enough that you can't hear yourself think, and the place is always bizarrely packed. Will take about half an hour to reach the bar to get a drink, and if you are young and female expect to be groped by a 40+ man in the process.
