Wash'n'go 3*

This Clapham hairdresser is perennially busy, and as a result suffers from conveyor-belt syndrome. Most of the staff are competent and friendly (I recommend Emma) though you'll often feel like they're trying to rush you out the door - expect your hairdresser's time to be divided between a couple of clients. Nice Aveda products make it worth the reasonable prices. Little Willies, the sister shop nearby, specialises in children's cuts

Review of Peter Harrington

What a wonderful place 3*

This book seller always has amazing things in the window. The displays are always themed and hint at what is an extensive and impressive range of antique books on offer in the shop. Everything about this set up says "expert".

Review of Maroush III

Real takeaway 3*

The takeaway service here is super quick and relatively healthy, so if you're still at your desk at 9pm and need some sustenance better to swing by here than pick up the phone to Dominos. The food is cooked to order, while you wait, and to your specification.

Review of The Berkeley Health Club and Spa

Feeling Blue 3*

This bijou bar set in the Berkeley hotel lives up to its name: the blue colour scheme is muted and elegant, while linen drinks' mats and charming furnishings are the order of the day. It feels casual and boutique-y, but also very indulgent. The cocktails, especially the Cosmos, are excellent

Review of Trojka

Potato latkes, anyone? 3*

There's no doubting this is a Russian tea-room, the large selection of Russian dolls as you enter and the huge Matroyshka (that's Russian doll, just showing off) painted on the doorway are a bit of a giveaway. The menu contains a variety of delicious Russian dishes, many of which you've probably never heard of , we certainly hadn't , which makes for a new and exciting dining experience. Try the potato latkes, they're fantastic. Trojka is also extremely popular at breakfast time, thanks to its great pastries.

Review of Foyles

05 May 07, 10:59

Shhhh! I'm trying to read 4*

There aren't many bookshops that boast live jazz performances, a fantastic coffee shop and a staff with an encyclopaedic knowledge of stock, old and new - Foyles is one: a destination shop just a few metres from Tottenham Court Road tube station, where it's been for more than 100 years. Foyles is busy beating off the world-domination of Waterstone's and Tesco by any means necessary - which sometimes manifests itself in discounts on popular titles, but more importantly results in a wide, varied range of stock born out of a real passion for books. This is how big bookshops should be.

Review of Callys Locksmith

Lock, stock and barrel 2*

There's not much choice in the area, and although they turn up to emergencies quickly, if you try and book in advance, they can be unreliable. It will cost at least seventy quid to get a lock opened, a new key cut and the lock changed. They can also fit security devices, bars (not the alcoholic types) and grills (also, disappointingly, nothing to do with chicken/burgers...).

Review of Seasons Traditional Fish and Chips

Not, in fact by the seaside 5*

This fish n chip shop right by south ken is a gem. I picked up takeout for supper tonight and had a lovely piece of cod and huge amount of wedges rather than chips which made a nice change. Massive portions for £5. Perfect.

Review of Dajani Pharmacy

Brilliant chemist 5*

This chemist is very close to my flat so I am in here ever 5 minutes. What I love about this sort of independent chemist is that they sell everything from basic Dove soap through to Clarins makeup and the really high end cosmetic brands. This is one such establishment (and Harleys down the rd is another). This makes them a great multipurpose shopping destination - get your hangover headache tabs, your pile cream and a lovely gift for you flatmate all at the same time. The chemists themselves are always friendly and informative (unlike at Boots where they just want to get you out of the store as fast as possible). I'd really recommend these guys.

Review of La Trouvaille

01 May 07, 20:22

Find yourself 4*

This is a beautiful and very well executed French restaurant. In the summer, tables laid with white linen skirt the outside, while inside, the dÈcor creates a convivial, intimate atmosphere. The food here is a modern twist on traditional French - with surprising dishes like mutton with lavender surpassing all expectations. The wine list is one of the best I've seen. The staff will woo you into staying for three courses and not wanting to leave. Go with lovers, with friends, with family - with anyone who offers to pay the bill - just go.
