Review of The Lounge, Spanish Tapas Bar

Bar for all seasons 4*

This place could be condemned for having a bit of an identity crisis. It's a bit of a hodge podge of a sports bar and a tapas joint and a brunch hotspot, but somehow it gets away with it.

It's probably mostly down to the delightful couple that run the place. She's the sort of person that when you go down there on a Saturday lunchtime with the hangover from hell and a head full of regrets about what you did last night, will look delighted to see you and serve you a perfect Bloody Mary while you decide which of their brilliant breakfasts you're going to use in place of paracetemol.

Snacky tapas is fantastic - especially the very garlicky prawns, but Sundays in the winter is when the place really comes into its own.

We've been known to head down there with the papers for brunch and a Bloody Mary, stay for a few beers and whatever football is on in the afternoon, and finally order dinner and a couple of bottles of wine. It's that sort of a place.

Review of La Terraza

Spain in SW4 3*

This gaudy orange building doesn't look that promising from the outside but inside, it's a little bit like stepping into a bar on the outskirts of Madrid.

Invariably there's Spanish football on the televisions above the bar, and lots of guys at the bar, beer in one hand, boquerones in the other discussing the game.

The decor is simple and the predominantly Spanish waiters span the service scale, from avuncular friendliness to disinterest.

Spanish staples are what's on offer here and the big portions means that three or four carefully selected tapas can do two for a light meal.

Prices are cheap, but that sometimes means the food is too - Madrilenos might like the atmosphere but they'd probably have something to say about some of the menu items. There's probably better tapas to be had in the area - eg. El Rincon Latino, but if you just want a quick snack, it's not a bad option.

Likes sushi, rare roast beef with Yorkshire puddings, stinky cheeses, bangers and mash, and any really sour sweets like Haribo Tangfastics, vodka cocktails, Chilean Merlot, and tea with the tea bag left in it so it's properly strong, Man Utd, ink pens, shoes, particularly if they are ridiculously high heeled and brightly coloured
Dislikes stupidity, blind faith, an inability to argue coherently, bananas, hangovers, smugness
Best thing about where I live Almost all my friends live really close by and it's only 20 minutes to central London.
Worst thing about where I live The marauding foxes and squirrels that make all my gardening efforts worthless.
