Review of The Gate

17 Apr 08, 15:19

Vegtastic 4*

The Gate is an odd proposition. It's tucked into a building that resembles an old age home that's situated within the shadow (or stench if you prefer) of Hammersmith Apollo - perhaps an unlikely location for a vegetarian restaurant... Its in-a-nook-ness means you'd miss it if you weren't looking for it and might even if you were. But to miss it would be a mistake. Once inside the high ceilings of this converted church and the tasty plates on offer are an excellent escape from the urban jungle outside. The mains are fairly priced and decently portioned and the ethnically diverse menu keeps things interesting. For both veggies and non - veggies - this is an experience to have...

Review of Boulevard Deli

Cheap Central London Eats 4*

The Boulevard Deli serves big fat roast sandwiches for not that much money. Yes, they have good salads, baguettes and baps as well, but the real hook here the lovely warm rotisserie chicken and roast beef sandwich sandwiches or platters. The lunchtime hours are generally crammed and the service can be spotty, but as quality cheap-ish eats in Central London go this is a find.

Review of Budgens

Simple The Best 5*

Have you ever found a little shop that somehow manages to have everything you want? I have...not just Oasis and Fruit Pastilles and crap french sticks. This is a good local shop for all your basics and all those frou frou/random things like light coconut milk, whole-wheat asian noodles, kale, and golden syrup. The place isn't very well laid out in terms of checkout as the people tend to overwhelm the tills, but the staff are friendly enough and seem to get people through. The biggest bonus is it's open late every day - including Sundays. Ace!

Sit Down For This 4*

While I find the best Caribbean food in the Capital is delivered over the counters of little shops that barely have enough room to stand in let alone sit, this spot in Camden bucks that trend. The menu makes for tough decisions in the best possible way - and while the food costs more than something that would come through a little window in a borough market it stacks up well for a sit down meal. Inventive cocktails and good wine list round out the experience and the efficient service makes this a good one to go to before a gig.

Review of Cho-San

A Lovely Little Spot 4*

As white-bred as Putney can be - it can sometimes through up surprises and this one. As Wagamama and such sprout up all over London it's nice to see a local Japanese spot like this stay afloat. The Sushi and Sashimi are well-priced and presented - along an interesting array of cooked and grilled items that will please the more adventurous as well as the reluctant. The space is cosy and the service is friendly and eager to please.

Review of The Rock and Sole Plaice

Everyone Loves a Pun 3*

As Fish & Chips goes - this place is very good. The price is steep though and although the portions are large it's not really worth it. The fact that it's small creates queues - that must be what is throwing off people's sense of value. Walk 10 minutes in any direction and you can find breaded deep-fried fish for less that will make your taste buds as happy. Credit where credit is due though - whomever named this place was inspired...

Review of Bags Bunny

Tat 1*

This place sells tat. Simple as that - Bags born to fall apart and flashing mobile doo-dads. This place is noteworthy only for it's hilarious name "Bags Bunny" and its endearingly off-centre sign out front. How do they pay the rent in this part of town?

Review of Gluttons

10 Apr 08, 16:13

Gluttony is Good 4*

This sandwich spot is buried in the bustle of Goodge Street and it would be easy to whiz right past. But to miss it would be a shame...Gluttons is the home of a delectable array of modestly priced lunch items and the shop and food are authentically hand-made -- even down to the signs on the refrigerator racks. Bakery items are cling-wrapped like a present from your gran and the taste the same. Skip the other shite - Gluttons have got it right.

Review of Icco Pizza

Not Cheap Pizza on the Cheap 4*

ICCO is a simple proposition and simple sale. Skip-your-next-meal-sized pizzas for under 4 pounds. Oh, and the pizzas are good too. They aren't fancy or gourmet - you can't have artichoke hearts or any of that, but the basics are covered and the atmosphere is always buzzing. Despite an almost constant line the staff move people through quickly and the student-y spill over from UCL don't linger long. Awesome.

Review of Pret A Manger

09 Apr 08, 17:40

Meh... 2*

It's like all the others...duh...This McDonald's owned sandwich shop sells lunch to the unadventurous. Want to buy a small green banana for 50p? This is your spot. Seriously though, it does the trick on the quick. Beyond that you really should go out and experience something better and more interesting shouldn't you?
