Review of The Phoenix Artist Club

01 May 08, 12:01

Nice central bar, good atmosphere, unpretentious & not too expensive. 4*

The Phoenix artist's club is just off Charing Cross Road and is a nice bar to go to to start off a night. The clientele seem to be quite mixed, from individuals and small groups in from the theatre to folk just in for a chat and occaisonally the odd post-work group (though not the kind that some other West End bars are full of!).

Good to go before 8pm as you're supposed to be a member after this time. I believe you can also book an area if there's a large group of you going along, though haven't tested this out yet.

Review of Nusa Dua

Hit or Miss 3*

If I was to review this place a month ago (March 2008) I would've said it was brilliant, has a good set menu for under £9 and really nice thai food.

Over the last couple of years I've been here probably about 10 times and it's been great every time until last Saturday when I had one of the worst meals I've had for a while.

The 'soup' was fairly weak and didn't really taste of anything... kind of like a basic stock. The Pad Thai was a bit too gelatinous for my liking and reeked of garlic. Our starters and my friend's food were similarly garlicified to the point where she'd had enough garlic and couldn't eat much more.

Noticing the fairly full plate when clearing the table, the waitress asked if something was wrong with the food. My friend explained courteously that she hadn't like it. The waitress then didn't say anything and carried on clearing the table :S All round a bit dissapointing. We ended up going for more food a few hours later cos we were hungry.

Review of The Breakfast Club

American Breakfasts and Smoothies to Die For! 4*

The Breakfast club is a compact shabby chic type cafe cum diner in Soho. It's decked out with slightly retro elements and old sturdy bits of furniture, and a bright but not in your face paint job. They serve a good mix of breakfasty/brunch food and have smoothies that taste as good as they sound. The Blue Monday Remix and Mango-A-Go-Go are particularly good for an extra burst of energy the morning after the night before.

Coupled with an Amercian style 'All American' - eggs, bacon, pancakes and maple syrup breakfast and one of their massive latte's it's the perfect place to start a weekend day. It's also apparently good for early morning work meetings, though I haven't had the pleasure of experiencing this yet {hint, hint}.

p.s. The Soho branch is only open Monday - Saturday. They also have a branch in Angel that's open Sundays but I've not been there yet.
