Review of The Market Porter
11 Aug 08, 09:32
Great Pub next to Borough Market
i love the market porter. It's a simple no nonsense boozer right opposite Borough Market.
It gets very busy mind, especially on, Fri and Saturday when the market is in full swing. You'll find punters spilling out on to the street most evenings.
Whilst you're there be sure to check out the sausage sarnies from the shop next door - perfect with a pint.

Review of Link Cash Machine
17 Jul 08, 10:49
Here, here!
Damn those wretched link cash machines. They're the modern day Dick Turpin.
You go to the cornershop to buy a loaf of bread and end up having to pay more to the one-arm-bandit hole in the wall than you do to the shop owner.
It's daylight robbery I tell you, daylight robbery! Grrrrr

Review of Octopus

Boo! Not a cephalopod in sight.
Having traveled the breadth of London to visit this place, you can only imagine my disappointment when I discovered that they sold no octopi of any kind.
Worst. Octopus Shop. Ever.

Review of Leonardo Ristorante Italiano

Ask for the "Special" topping on your pizza
When I lived in Brighton I had an office just around the corner from Leonardos and I used to go their 2 or 3 times a week for their great value lunchtime deals.
The grilled sardines were amazing and the service was always spot on.
HOWEVER, this all came to an abrupt end one day back in 2003. There was I busy tucking into Moma's spicy meat balls when a load of police came bursting through the front door and started pointing guns at everyone.
It turns out that the then owner had been making a tidy profit from a new line of pizzas that featured "special" toppings. Toppings that included finest Columbian cocaine.
People would ring ahead with their "special order" and then drop by the restaurant to pick up their pizza. Once home they would lift a corner of their pizza's succulent, hand spun, doughy base to find a yummy big bag of Coke sitting their ready for desert.
Now that's what I call service!
The owner ended up getting 8 years...

Review of Union
01 May 08, 10:31
It's all about the bull dog
The Union is a friendly local clothing store selling mid-pocket designer clothes to Blackheaths well heeled gents.
Brands on offer include G-Star, Penguin, John Smedley etc. at prices that are neither cheap or madly expensive.
I'd have given the shop an average three stars were it not for the shop's super-cool British Bull Dog that greets customers with a smile and a slobber and enjoy lounging around in the window all day.

Review of Cross Cars

Tooting cars will take you there
Cost me £30 to go from Tooting to Blackheath the other day with these guys, and we didn't get lost once!
Driver wasn't the most vocal or entertaining of chaps but I was probably too drunk to be much conversation anyway.

Review of Greenwich Park Bar & Grill

Touristy Greenwich Pub Opposite the Park
The Greenwich Park Bar and Grill is a nothing-to-write-home about kinda wannabe gastro pub right opposite the main Greenwich Park main gates.
It's got a fairly sizeable beer garden out back and in summer puts out tables on the street outside.
There's nothing bad about it per se, but if I was after a beer or bite to eat I'd chose one of the pubs slightly off the main beaten tourist track as this place doesn't have too much of a soul and can get very busy (especially during the day at weekends).
If you're spending the day in the park and prefer a more spit-and-sawdust style boozer then withing 10 minutes from the main gate the following pubs all offer better booze, food and atmosphere:

Review of English's Of Brighton
19 Apr 08, 19:57
Excellent Brigton Seafood Restaurant
English's can be found at the centre of the North Laines area of Brighton just a couple of streets away from the seafront.
It has a well deserved reputation for serving up some of (if not the) best seafood in Brighton and if you're going there you're going to need a pretty fat wallet as quality comes with a pretty hefty price tag.
So, unless you're super minted, you're best off saving up for a special occasion and then going proper mental when you get there by tucking into the scallops to start followed by the biggest whole grilled lobster you can afford and washing it all down with a bottle of Champers or Chablis. Add on the excellent creme brulee for desert and a coffee and you can easily find yourself breaking the £100 / head barrier.
Worth every penny!

Review of Zero Degrees
19 Apr 08, 19:29
Cheapest Beer in Blackheath?
This place brews a pretty decent pilsner on the premises and thanks to pricing their homebrew very keenly it can get pretty rammed on Friday and Saturday nights.
The clientelle tends to be an odd mix between "average Joes", "too cool for school types" and "dolled up oiks and oikesses from the upper echeleons of chavdom". Best of all I recall that it has a license till either 12 or 1pm at weekends and a sizeable patio at the front for the smokers of this world.
One word of advice, don't roll into the place drunk at midnight and order two of their 5 pint mini kegs of beer to take home with you - actually do, just know that there'll be the mother of all headaches to contend with the following morning.

Review of Cafe Creperie
19 Apr 08, 18:46
Great Crepe Restaurant near South Kensington Tube
Cafe Creperie is a no nonsense back-to-basics crepe cafe that you'll find just around the corner from South Ken tube.
It's got a really extensive range of crepes on offer, and if you ask nicely they will even build a custom crepe just for you.
I went for the "royale" crepe which was stuffed full of cheese, ratatouille and a load of other yummyness, that said everything on the menu looked pretty good too. Oh, and don't forget to order a bowel of cider for the full Breton style experience.
Highly recommended.
