Review of The Shaftesbury Tavern

Nice Little Local 4*

The back of the pub is the nice bit, and it still holds a lot of its victorian features there. The rest of the decor is light and airy and theres some outdoor seating at the front. Prices are reasonable and the staff seem good.

Review of St. Johns Tavern

Gastropub in Archway 4*

St. Johns gets some good press especially in Time Out for being one of the best Gastropubs in North London. I haven't been there to eat but its quite expensive. I heard on the grapevine that Suggs from Madness eats there, If he does he will find that it has a good atmosphere with good bar service with plenty of seating to dine available. They even have a few chessboards knocking about. Definitely worth a try

Review of Nambucca

Hey Scenester 3*

This is a scenester pub, and by that I mean its where a lot of the indie/rock kids hang out in N19 and N7. Its got a good atmosphere and a lot of live bands play here for under a fiver, but i think there are better venues for bands in north london. I believe they partly filmed The Kooks single 'Naive' here. Drinks are ok priced and the bar staff are friendly but the toilets are a disgrace.

Review of The White Lion Of Mortimer

Above Average Weatherspoons 4*

I like this weatherspoons, nice decor, cheap drinks (as usual), good quiz machine (as usual) but it has a bit of character about it at the back with a conservatory bit. In the summer its good to sit outside on stroud green road which has a buzz about it which I think rubs off onto the pub itself. The staff are friendly and its never too busy to take 15 mins to get served like some other pubs.

Review of The White Swan

Below Average Weatherspoons 2*

The best thing about this weatherspoons is that it serves the cheapest drinks on Upper Street. Apart from that its a bit soulless inside. Lots of seats and seems to be busy but it just has nothing about it. If it wasn't a weatherspoons I'd probably give it 3 stars but it is so I'm not going too.

Review of The King Of Diamonds

31 Jul 07, 16:20

Possibly a 4 star 3*

King of Diamonds on the outside doesnt seem like an inviting place or very big. But its got 3 floors. The bottom has two pool tables, 1 american and 1 british, the ground floor has a cracking little pub quiz machine and the main bar, whilst upstairs leads to a fairly large balcony bit. Because of its location the pub only has an atmosphere on a weekday night so I'd only go there, but its a place you can enjoy for a few drinks. Food is good and the drinks are well priced.

Review of The Sir John Oldcastle

Lots of Seats, Good Atmosphere 3*

For a weatherspoons, this is one of the better ones. Plenty of seating, plenty more flatscreen tvs churning out sky sports news and more importantly a very good pub quiz machine. Drinks in any weatherspoons is cheap as chips. It always seems busy when I go in but its not a young crowd.

Review of The Three Compasses

31 Jul 07, 16:14

Weatherspoonsy 3*

I found the three compasses very weatherspoonsy which isn't a bad thing but its not a place with character or with any atmosphere, especially amongst the youth at night (they go to the fence next door) or in the weekday (they go to the castle). Drinks are well priced and the service is good. The big problem I found with the pub is that its quite dark and dingy inside as the only windows are at the front which considering its quite a long pub is quite bad. Just stop for a pint if you go in.

Review of The Castle

31 Jul 07, 16:11

Busy in Evening Rush Hour 3*

Its the closest pub to farringdon tube stop so its very busy when its not raining outside. I say this because its not a very big pub so its standing outside only usually. The Pub's quite nice inside, your usual old Victorian pub fittings and the drinks are fairly priced. But theres nothing special about this place at all.

Review of The Jerusalem Tavern

Small Pub for Ale Fanatics 3*

I personally don't like my ales but a lot of people do, so if you are one of them I would recommend going to here as thats all they sell. I understand that its also one of the only few places that does sell a wide selection of ales in central London. Its a very small pub, probably the smallest Ive been too, so if its a Friday or Saturday night don't go unless its sunny otherwise you wont have anywhere to stand!
