Review of Pret A Manger
17 Apr 08, 16:56
Stereotypical Pret
A little too small and dingy for me but if it was my closest pret i'd still go there because the sandwiches are good. Again, another chain store that doesnt really stand out too much from the crowd but offers the simple things well enough.

Review of Pret A Manger

Standard Pret Shop
Nothing much to write about this place, its not big enough to sit down and eat there and there was nothing special about the staff but there wasnt anything bad about the place either. Food freshly prepared everyday like all the other prets and its big enough just to cope with the lunchtime hoardes.

Review of Subway
17 Apr 08, 16:32
Sub Standard
I quite like subway sandwiches as they dont taste bad and a 6" sub is quite filling to me. The problem is with this branch is that its too small which means at lunchtime the queue is upto the door and often have to shout your order over 10 people. Full credit to the staff for coping but its just too much sometimes when you are in a hurry.

Review of The Elbow Room
17 Apr 08, 16:17
Good but Room for Improvement
I came here for the first time last week after going to the Islington branch several times in the last couple of months. Set more in the scruffy end shoreditch/hoxton its quite easy to miss unless you know where you are going. The interior is nice but it doesnt stand out and there isnt really enough tables to cater for the masses here. Maybe just stop off for a drink here but dont make a night of it

Review of Oslo
13 Nov 07, 21:53
Slightly Prententious City Bar
Oslo on Briggate will be a place that will divide your opinion. Some will see this as a pretentious bar in the centre of leeds resembling a science fiction film set. Others will see it as something a bit different with a great vibe to it. I'm in the latter and although some of the people here aren't the most pleasant of people, you can get that in any place you drink. I think its worth trying this place for a quick drink but maybe not worth staying there all night.

Review of Mojo
13 Nov 07, 21:35
Fun Weekend Nights but expensive cocktails
Mojo's on Merrion Street has a reputation for having some really good nights especially on a Saturday night. I went here one night and the first thing that hit me was an odd smell, probably that of beer spillt on a wet carpet giving off a nice damp aroma. Another thing about Mojo's is the expensive cocktails, although nice, are just too pricey too enjoy all night. As you can imagine then, there aren't many students here although there is a young vibrant crowd that do turn up. I'd only give this place a 3 out of 5 as a result.

Review of Beckett's Bank
13 Nov 07, 21:27
Stereotypical City Centre Pub
Residing on Park Row, Beckett's Bank is the name of one of the Wetherspoon city centre pubs in Leeds. It's a huge place inside probably exasperated by the huge ceiling. Because it's huge, it attracts a lot of people on the weekend especially when they do one of their theme weeks or nights like Halloween or recently the real ale festival. Nevertheless its a good pub and you get what you pay for.

Review of Angel Inn
13 Nov 07, 21:21
Samuel Smith Pub in Centre of Leeds
Tucked away down an alley, between two shopping precincts, The Angel is a large pub in the centre of Leeds. This is a typical Samuel Smith pub with old wood interior and cheap beer on tap. It's got a bit of character about it and the staff are very friendly but because the beer is cheap it only seems to attract people who you wouldn't want to take home.

Review of The Seven Oaks
13 Nov 07, 20:49
Good atmosphere and helpful bar staff
The Seven Oaks is tucked away on the edge of Manchester's Chinatown. Its got a good layout to it and some decent beers. I was impressive by how quick the service was and the bars got a great atmosphere to it. I think this place is probably best with a small group of friends, I recommend booking a table here for dinner if you can.

Review of Thirsty Scholar
13 Nov 07, 20:43
Thirsty Work
The Thirsty Scholar on New Wakefield Street has a terrific name for a pub. Its a bit dark and dingy inside and is very much a rock and roll on the jukebox kind of pub. This certain gives the place character but I couldn't find many drinks I wanted in here but the staff were helpful enough to find something for me. The atmosphere is nice in here and I could see by the posters that they have DJ's in on a weekend. I have only been here once so I cant say whats its like then but on first impression its worth giving it a go.

Review of The Sandbar
13 Nov 07, 20:38
Good Pub with Plenty of Potential for more
The Sandbar on Grosvenor Street has many great things about it. A good selection of continental beers (which I rarely see outside of London) some fine ales for those with a specific palate. Its got a relaxing atmosphere which is good when many bars in the city have the air of being rushed into drinking. The Jukebox seemed pretty good as well. All in all a good pub from top to toe.

Review of The Waldorf Hotel
13 Nov 07, 20:35
Good place to stop when traveling
Don't be fooled by the Waldorf's name. Yes its a hotel as in it has rooms for the night but its got a good bar inside here. The best thing in here is the mix of people, young and old. The young coming for the cheap drinks and the old coming for the real ales. It gets busy here on match days so if you do come now, get here early that said its a good place to get a drink before or after getting the train. (Due to its proximity with Piccadilly train station)

Review of The Dog & Partridge
13 Nov 07, 20:27
Nice Pub with Live Music on Trippet Lane
There are one or two nice pubs on Trippet Lane, the Dog and Partridge is another good pub. I was a bit worried at first to enter but my nerves were settled by a very smiley/friendly bar staff member. It seems the locals like Guinness here as I think I was the only person there without one so if Guinness is your thing maybe here is the place to try it. The pub has a lot of live bands and it almost reminded me of the Leopold in Doncaster but a lot more classier.

Review of The Red Lion
13 Nov 07, 20:15
Good for the Weekend
The Red Lion on Charles Street is a great pub in the center of Sheffield. Theres a lot of beers on tap and even a few ales as well to keep the older drinkers happy. There is much of an atmosphere here unless it match day at Bramall Lane but the mix of young and old drinkers works really well here without looking seedy or being quite aggressive. Sadly thou it lacks something special about it, its the people that make a place at the end of the day so this is really a weekend pub.

Review of RSVP
13 Nov 07, 20:12
Nice Views and Nice Staff
RSVP on Cambridge Street is one of the only few places I know in Sheffield that has two floors to it (But not a nightclub). It's got a really nice bar to it and the second floor views of the city center are really nice, day or night. Drinks are a tad pricey I think but its a big place and the atmosphere on the weekend can get really good. I'm going to give in an extra star just for having really hot bar staff thou. Go and check it out yourself!

Review of Runaway Girl
13 Nov 07, 20:09
Not as I expected from word of mouth
The Runaway Girl can be found on Arundel Street in the city of Sheffield. I heard a lot of good things about it from review websites but after going there I can't understand why. Its quite a small bar and the cocktails were nice but I've tasted better at a Revolutions bar. That said, the staff were very good and the atmosphere ok, but from listening to other people I expected a lot more.

Review of Wetherspoons
13 Nov 07, 20:06
Average Wetherspoons and Low Prices
A good city center wetherspoons in Piccadilly. I went in the afternoon after traveling the morning to get to Manchester on the train so its wasn't that busy inside. As a result I cant tell you whether this place is good enough in the night time but its a huge place with lots of seats and there was nearly as many staff as customers when I stopped by so the signs are good. Not an awe inspiring pub but be at awe with the low prices!

Review of Men Only
13 Nov 07, 18:43
Good Barbershop on Beverley Road
Men Only on Beverley Road is an barbershop near the crossroads with Cottingham Road. I only went in here the one time and this was on a whim as I was on a mission to get my haircut somewhere nice rather than a shop offer a student discount. A short back and sides isn't very taxing for a barber which was achieved admirably. I recommended it to my friend who went a week later with the same happy results.

Review of Lloyds No. 1 Bar
13 Nov 07, 18:23
Your Standard Lloyd's No.1 Bar
A Large Lloyd's No.1 bar can be found at the end of Division Street. When you arrive expect to find it to the standard of Lloyd's No.1 bars across the country with nice soft decor and good value for money on drinks and food. I didn't stop in here for too long as I was doing a pub crawl around the main bars in the city but if I was to do another one and I was around Division Street I would pop in again.

Review of The Museum
13 Nov 07, 18:16
Average Pub, Not Impressed Too Much
The Museum on Orchid Street has gone through several changes in its time. It's now gone back to its original name'The Museum'. It's quiet ironically really as I found the atmosphere in here very quite like a Museum but it does have a good outdoor bit so in the Summer things perk up a bit. If you like your ales this has a few on tap and the beer prices are too bad either for a city center pub.

Review of The Frog & Parrot
13 Nov 07, 18:02
Pub for Students on Weekend
The Frog and Parrot is a pub on Division Street that's pretty much a student pub now which makes its a bit disappointing when the students aren't around. However the pub stills retains some character and they have some half decent beers here if thats what you are looking for in a pub. But I think its a Saturday night pub on a city pub crawl and nothing else so try it then rather than for a quiet weekday pint after work.

Review of Swim Inn
13 Nov 07, 17:48
Slightly Disappointing Pub
A stereotypical city center pub. Nice and friendly atmosphere to the place with some very cheap drinks. Monday Club prices are even cheaper in the north than London. There are believe it or not wetherspoons pubs with a certain edge to it, alas the Swin Inn is not one of them but its a good attempt nevertheless. Its a pub to start off a night if you are new to the city but you will find several better pubs around the corner when you venture outside which is why I have rated it 3 stars.

Review of Varsity Bar
13 Nov 07, 17:47
Worth a visit if In the Area
The Varsity on West Street is one of those places that isn't nice to look at but yet you always managed to have a good time in there. The beer isn't up to much and either are the toilets although I hear there has been a refurbishment done recently. Hopefully this wouldn't have taken away the character of the place too much. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Review of Wetherspoons
13 Nov 07, 17:45
Large Wetherspoons with Outdoor Patio
A nice and clean Wetherspoons in the city center of Sheffield with upstairs and downstairs bars making this one of the biggest in the country (I think). Theres also a small outside patio which is ideal for the summer when you want to relax and unwind in the sun. Its usually a good place to get things started if you are going for a pub crawl around the center. Although the food isn't exceptional its good enough and there is a good atmosphere around the place to warrant a visit.

Review of Yates's
13 Nov 07, 17:43
Reliable Yate's Pub
Compared to other Yates in the UK I have been too, the one on Division Street in the middle of Sheffield is one of the better ones but compared to other chain pubs its still behind many of them. There wasn't anything particularly bad about the place, the food was good, friendly staff, nice and clean but it just didn't have anything about it to make me want to go there again which is a bit of a shame considering the Staff's hard work.

Review of Noble House
13 Nov 07, 17:36
Very Nice Chicken Balti From Here
Noble House on the Parkway in Cottingham Village center is one of several Indian takeaways based in the village. It's not my favourite but its still very good value for money. I particularly enjoyed the Chicken Balti, probably the best I had whilst I lived in Hull. It is your standard suburban takeout thou but looks can be deceptive so I would recommend a takeaway from here when you next feel peckish and you live local.

Review of The Monkey Walk
13 Nov 07, 17:30
Good Local Wetherspoons
I was surprised to see a wetherspoons in a small town like coalville and I was surprised to see that it was very busy and popular with both young and old drinkers. There were a few ales on tap but not as many were available as in some city branches. Overall its not a bad pub but its not as lively as some of pubs because of its location in a small countryside town. Probably a good pub if you are a local thou.

Review of The Showroom Bar And Cafe
13 Nov 07, 17:28
Decent enough Place with Wi-Fi
The Showroom on Paternoster Row is another handy little place to go if you have just missed your train. It's a decent city center bar but nothing stands out when you get there. Theres a lot of people with laptops in here when I went so I'm guessing they have free wi-fi which is certainly a bonus as few places still provide this service in their premises. My friend in Sheffield told me its got a late license now on Thursdays to Saturdays so it might be worth your time to visit the bar then as well.

Review of The Rutland Arms
13 Nov 07, 17:27
An Endearing Pub close to the Station
If you like your real ales (like my Dad) this is one of the places to go in Sheffield. The Rutland Arms resides on Brown Street and has a good range of beers. My dad pointed 7 out to me. Its in quite a handy location not too far away from the Railway station so if your train is delayed it might be worth the risk to come here for a quick drink. Overall the pub has some friendly staff and a rather eccentric decor that you will probably find very endearing.

Review of The Hub
13 Nov 07, 17:26
Sheffield Hallam Student Union Bar
This is Sheffield Hallam University's Student Union. Its a nice bar with lots of pool tables for the students too enjoy. Its also got a few TV's in the corners for the sport. Great if you are a student but I felt a bit uncomfortable now that I'm not a student. But that is just me, the atmosphere is lively as you would expect and drinks are cheap so why not give it a try sometime.

Review of The Globe
13 Nov 07, 16:50
Pub with Sticky Floor Sydrome
The Globe on Howard Street is a place I would describe as a chain pub with a friendly atmosphere and full of students. Its also very close to the train station. Expect old furniture, very sticky floors but a great jukebox. If you like pubs with a lively atmosphere then this is the place to go but do expect lots of students. However if a student bar repulses you then go elsewhere in the city.

Review of The Fountain
13 Nov 07, 16:44
Good for Quiet Relaxing Pints
The Fountain on Leopold Street is a pub more for a relaxing pint rather than one of those pubs with a party atmosphere going on. The prices for drinks aren't too bad although not the cheapest in Sheffield by any stretch of the imagination. The interior is spacious with wooden decor and a high roof. I think this pub is more for after work drinks or a quiet pint on a weekday night rather than a place to go on the weekend.

Review of All Bar One
13 Nov 07, 16:35
Typical Style of Bar in City
All Bar One is a typical city center bar. Nothing special, you basically get what you pay for which is a reasonably priced drink and a prompt service. The staff are probably the best thing in the bar although the food was quite good as well. I'd treat this place as somewhere to go on a city pub crawl around Sheffield but nothing more.

Review of Yates's
13 Nov 07, 16:30
Well Maintained Yate's at Piccadilly
This isn't your typical Yates pub (like on Portland Street), its actually quite good. Its seems to be a trend now to build pubs in railway stations but it feels like they have made an effort with this one as this isn't the only pub on the concourse. Its a lot friendly and cleaner than other yate's I have been in but unless you like a drink or two before or after traveling then I don't think you are missing too much. But if you have a thirst on, it hits the spot quite well.

Review of O'sheas
13 Nov 07, 16:25
Traditional Irish Pub Good For Watching Sports
O'Shea's on Princess Street is very handy to watch the sport especially watching city or united play which does give it some good atmosphere. However on occasions its got too busy and uncomfortable to watch there because there aren't too many pubs with big screen sports in the city center. If you hadn't realized already its an Irish pub so St.Patrick's Day is often the best and worst night of the year. If you do go, go early or possibly check out one of the live nights there.

Review of Night & Day
13 Nov 07, 16:24
Good Venue to check out Live Bands
Night and Day on Oldham Street is one of the best live venues on Manchester. Places like Night and Day are on every street corner in north London but in Manchester they are a dieing breed. That said the place interior isn't that nice. A little dingy and grotty round the edges mean that most people come here to see bands rather than to drink. The beer is reasonable and the staff are friendly to be around. For all its faults it still worth taking a look to see the next potential big bands.

Review of Grey Horse Inn
13 Nov 07, 16:22
Warm, Friendly but very Small Pub
The Grey Horse is a cosy little traditional pub in the heart of the city. Its got a warm and friendly atmosphere and a few good beers on tap apart from the usual commercial beers that are to be found everywhere. When I describe it as a little pub, I mean little but because of the atmosphere you can forgive the pub for its lack of space. Most of the people in the pub are regulars rather than students so if you want to avoid the student pub circuit then stop off here.

Review of Grand Central
13 Nov 07, 16:21
A Pub that prides itself on its Jukebox
The Grand Central appears to be one of those self appointed rock pubs with an extensive collection of music on the jukebox to attract the music lovers of Manchester to them. I found the jukebox a little too niche for my liking, too much pretentious rock and not enough quality punk music but jukebox aside the beer is good and the bar service is excellent. Theres plenty of potential in this pub so hopefully someone will improve the jukebox in the not too distant future.

Review of Font Bars
13 Nov 07, 16:20
Nice place to Chill and Relax in Manchester
The Font on Wakefield Street is pretty much an unofficial student bar, not necessarily in decor but in atmosphere. When I came here they have a PS2 in the corner of the bar which was free to play on one of the TV's there. It's not got the best view in Manchester but its a good place to chill out and relax with a few beers. Its a busy bar thou so don't expect quick service but the staff are friendly and very helpful.

Review of Fab Cafe
13 Nov 07, 16:16
Underrated Bar on Portland Street
The Fab cafe seems to be one of those places that you will either love of hate. My friend thought this place was awful, like a science fiction theme bar. I personally didn't like the minimalist decor with psychedelic murals but the bar seems to attract a good lively crowd which for me made it one of the better bars in the city center of Manchester when I visited recently.

Review of Ye Olde White Harte
13 Nov 07, 16:10
Classic Old Pub with Character
Ye Olde White Harte on Silver Street is one of Hull's better pubs. A lovely, big open fire, nice ales very much in the mold of the Olde Black Boy nearby with classic original features and an older more relaxed atmosphere. Its worth dropping in for a drink if you like the older drinking culture but if pool tables, jukeboxes and TV's blaring out sports constantly is your thing then don't waste you time here.

Review of Ye Olde Black Boy
13 Nov 07, 15:29
Nice Classic Pub on the High Street
The Black Boy on Hull High Street is a very popular pub because of its great range of beers and ales. Its also got the classic old interior about it that gives the place character. By this I don't mean its full of Victorian photographs and wooden furniture. Its not a place aimed at young people like me but if you appreciate the more classic drinking culture then this is one of the places to go to head too if you live or are visiting Hull.

Review of Ye Old Blue Bell
13 Nov 07, 15:23
Nice Friendly Samuel Smith Pub
The Ye Old Blue Bell on Market Place in the city center is if I very much mistaken a Samuel Smith pub, so it has quite a selection of ales and beers from around the country. The locals were nice in the Bell and I didn't feel out of place there. But I wouldn't stay for more than a drink as there quite a few places nearby that are just better than the Old Bell but take a look for yourself and discover I refreshing beer.

Review of The Wellington Inn
13 Nov 07, 15:14
Real Ale Pub but not for Young Drinkers
The Wellington Inn on Russell Street is another real ale pub to be found in Hull and one heavily recommended by the Campaign For Real Ales. Expect an old decor and a very wide selection of real ales but this wasn't enough for me so I didn't stop for long as its very popular with the older crowd. I can't fault its friendliness by staff and their quick service but it offers nothing for a young drinker in the city.

Review of The Old English Gentleman
13 Nov 07, 15:11
Pub for Theater Goers
The Old English Gentlemen on Mason Street is just outside the city center of Hull. It does however have some attractive features and an extremely comfortable place in which to enjoy a quiet pint. Its nestled behind the Hull New Theater so it really only attracts a theater crowd but if you are in the area and want a drink I would take a chance again and stop by for a quick drink.

Review of Berlins
13 Nov 07, 14:54
Very Large Underground Bar
Here is a useless fact for you. It used to be the entrance to the Laser Quest before it got turned into a bar. But this should give you an indication into the size of the place for an underground bar. It's a very popular bar on the town circuit. Its cheap drinks with a lively atmosphere with a lot of offers on the weekend to entice people in works a treat. As a result it attracts chavs like a blue light to a fly but if you like that hussle and bussle of a place then its just about worth a visit here.

Review of Plough Inn

Nice Friendly Local Pub in Town Centre
I much prefer next doors pub, The Tut n Shive but credit where credits due this has been described as the perfect locals' pub; friendly, welcoming, warm if the door to the gents' isn't open! It lacks the atmosphere for me but I can see why people like it. It has more seating than the Tut n Shive but its just a little too far off the main drag of the pub circuit to make it worth while going regularly.

Review of Livingstones
13 Nov 07, 14:36
Spacious Town Centre Bar in the Heart of the Action
I avoided Livingstone's on silver street for a very long time. A lot of people drink here before going to next door's Nightclub Trilogy. However it is a place to go if you want to go to a late night bar rather than a nightclub. There are a few crazy people knocking about on a weekend but somehow this adds to a good atmosphere. Its quite big as well and it does has some live bands to rival the leopard on the other side of town. Worth a visit when you have the time.

Airport Lounge Interior with Cheap Drinks
There is nothing special about this Wetherspoons, but for some reason I really like it here. The interior reminds me of a 1970's airport lounge but it has plenty of seating and a good atmosphere on a weekend. I once even saw a queue outside of people trying to get in! So it appears I'm not alone in thinking that its a good place to drink, but then again its in Doncaster!

Review of The Hogshead
13 Nov 07, 14:08
Nice Burgers in a Good'Chain' Pub
For some reason the Hogshead on Whitefriar Gate attracts a lot of people, I can't really tell the difference between this place and the local wetherspoons. Maybe one reason is because everyone here is under the age of 30 whilst many other chain pubs attracts older customers as well (especially wetherspoons). The food is good, particularly the Cheese and Bacon Burger. When I went last time they had changed the menu again so they may have some cracking new burgers on offer.

Review of Rugby Tavern
13 Nov 07, 14:04
Old Pub Steeped in History
I have only been to the Rugby Tavern once on the recommendation of one of my old lecturers at University. It's supposedly a legendary old pub where the North Sea Whalers used to head to when they came back to shore. It retains a certain history to it without being cheap and crass like some other pubs I know. Theres also a casino just down the road (Napoleons) so you get a few people heading too, or coming back from there in here.

Lazy Sunday Afternoon Pub
The Green Bricks is near one of the old docks close to the shopping center. I was told that this is one a few real ale pubs around the area, however when I went they weren't selling any due to cleaning of the pipes. There is a large selection of drinks here thou and I would recommend coming here on a lazy Sunday afternoon after a pub lunch somewhere else. The relaxed quiet atmosphere coupled with that'old man' feel actually made me enjoy the place quite a lot.

Review of Durty Nelly's
13 Nov 07, 13:54
Traditional Irish Pub aimed at Young Crowd
Durty Nelly's by the name alone has all the hallmarks for an Irish pub aimed at cashing in on the student market. So understandably this place had a bit of a following for obvious reasons. As it's an Irish pub it plays live Irish music on a Friday and Saturday. When there isn't live music theres a jukebox full of Irish music. Theres also a giant Jenga and table football to keep the younger customers happy. It has a good atmosphere here but I personally wouldn't go here to often as there is a distinct lack of variety here.

Review of Admiral Of The Humber
13 Nov 07, 13:33
Unappealing Wetherspoons
The Admiral of the Humber is a fairly typical Wetherspoon's in a city. Built on the ground floor of an office block. But although it doesn't look great inside or outside, its very popular so it has atmosphere specially on a weekend. Curry Club on a Thursday is very popular here so if you go then, I advise you to go as a early as possible after work. The same applies for the Sunday Roasts especially the Beef dish. Go here on a city pub crawl to get the best out of it.

Ok Coffee House But There Are Better Close By
I met my friends here a few times and I couldn't understand why. I didn't think there was anything that set it apart form all the other coffee shops on newland avenue. Although this coffee shop was often a little quieter so you could get a seat a lot of the time without hanging about for someone to leave. I thought the hot chocolate was nice here thou but maybe they can provide a bigger size for the money. Not my first choice for drinks but could be worth trying at other shops busy times.

Review of The Piper
13 Nov 07, 12:58
Good Student Nightclub on Newland Avenue
The piper is a pub/club half way up Newland Avenue. Its only worth going to on a student night which is usually on a Monday night. Its a nice venue but when its gets busy it can take an age to get served. Its also really hot inside and they force use to use a cloakroom if you have a coat with you. The drinks are cheap if you get a membership card but expect the queue on a student night due to its popularity. I've been here many times but most of the nights have merged into one due to the lack of variety at the place.

Review of Nik Nak
13 Nov 07, 12:49
Nice Quaint Shop in Village
Nik Nak on Hallgate, is a small gift shop in Cottingham village center. Personally I thought the gifts in there catered more towards presents for older people like decorative items and rather quaint birthday cards. So for me it didn't have what I was looking for. Although saying that, they did have a lot of different items available and nothing seemed overly expensive. It could be worth visiting to get some gift ideas thou.

Review of Segals Gifts
13 Nov 07, 12:47
Avearge Shopping Centre Gift Shop
Segals Gift Shop is one of those places to buy little things like stuff for Christmas or Halloween. There were a lot more novelty items in there than I thought and a lot less toys. I was disappointed to come here but I was surprised by the lack of variety in gifts in had considering the Princes Quay shopping center had several gift shops. However I think its worth going to if order to find that elusive and original novelty item that big brand shops don't stock.

Review of Campanile Hotel Restaurant
13 Nov 07, 12:43
Good Hotel Rooms and Central location
The campanile hotel is a very good value hotel in Hull. They are good sized rooms and the price is lower than many of the other chain hotels in the city center. The one thing I have against the hotel is that it overlooks as busy dual carriageway that circles around Hull city center but they have tried to cover the view of the road by planting trees around the building. If you want to go out for a drink there is a restaurant but I recommend going next door to the Lamp which is a bar full of character.

Review of Old Grey Mare Hotel
13 Nov 07, 12:42
Large Might Nice Pub outside of University
This is one of several Mighty Nice Chain pubs in Hull. This one is opposite the main entrance to Hull University so its very popular with the students. Ive spent many a lunchtime here and I cant think of a bad time I had here. Theres a big screen and plenty smaller TV's for the sports events, a pool table and a very great food menu which keeps added new snacks on. Take a visit there when you are in a curious mood.

Review of Circus Circus
13 Nov 07, 12:41
Student Bar with Cheap Drinks Offers
Circus Circus is basically a student bar opened as a pre-club warm up bar on a weekday and a late night bar on the weekends. Inside's interior is interesting, the more striking piece are the dodgems cars hanging off the roof. They have sacrificed a lot of seating to accommodate as many people as they can. Theres plenty of drinks offers and when the student crowd turn up has a good atmosphere. Personally I would exploit the cheap drinks and leave rather than hang around for a bit and have a chat as you can do that better somewhere else.

Review of Duke Of Cumberland
13 Nov 07, 12:39
Middle of the Road Village Pub
The Duke of Cumberland is another local pub in the village center. It's not as intimidating an atmosphere as the Tiger but it doesn't have the warm friendly atmosphere of the Cross Keys. It merely nestles in between the two which means it has its good points; plenty of seating, good beers, and its bad points; no drinks offers. I think its worth coming here if you fancy a change from the student friendly pubs in Cottingham but it will never be everything special.

Review of Napoleons Casino
13 Nov 07, 12:21
Good Casino but nothing Special
Napoleons is a fairly large casino in the center of Hull. A couple of friends of mine had membership cards to this place which they used quite often after a late night session in the pub. It's a nice clean casino with a separate restaurant to the side of the playing tables. The casino offers a gambling experience in Hull but not a unique gambling experience. Like a lot of things in Hull it doesn't try to go that extra mile to be or offer something a little bit different than the rest of the competition.

Review of May Sum
13 Nov 07, 12:18
Nice Buffet Shame about the Size
May Sum opened soon after I went to University in Hull. Its basically a small Chinese buffet restaurant where you can eat as much as you like for a set fee around £10. It was a nice place to go and the food was pretty tasty. I found the staff friendly but the place seemed to small to really enjoy the food and relax. I went on the weekend which was when its at its busiest so I felt a little rushed to eat and get out so they could accommodate new customers. It's probably best to go on a weekday night or a weekend lunchtime if you don't want to be hurried.

Review of Wok Ever
13 Nov 07, 12:15
Fairly Good Chinese Food
I actually went to this Chinese restaurant purely based on the name which I still find amusing. From the outside it seems like your average Chinese restaurant and inside feels no different. The food was nice and the service quick but there was no atmosphere or character about the place that sets it apart, so to describe this restaurant as an average dining experience is a fair assessment in my opinion.

Review of Pizza Hut
13 Nov 07, 12:14
Inner City Pizza Hut
I thought this branch of Pizza Hut was quite small and I was unimpressed by the time it took to get food served. I waited 40mins for a small pizza and whats more its extremely busy all the time here especially for the lunchtime buffet. So if you do want to go for that then leave work really early. Overall I was unimpressed with the restaurant which is a shame as the food at Pizza Hut is really good and the environment doesn't do it justice.

Review of Cineworld
13 Nov 07, 12:07
Average Quality Mulitiplex with Loads of Big Screens
Stuck in the middle of kingswood retail park, Cineworld is a big Multiplex cinema with several big screens showing the major Hollywood films. Because its in a retail park theres lots of car park space but if you don't have a car I'm not sure its worth the bus ride to go there. This is because the bus ride here is quite long and irregular especially if you are used to London public transport like me. It is a clean cinema with friendly staff but for an out of town cinema I thought it was still a little too expensive especially the weekend tickets.

Review of U G C Multiplex Cinemas
13 Nov 07, 11:57
Large Multiplex at Kingswood
UGC is the second cinema in the out of town retail park at Kingswood in Hull. There is hardly any difference between them and Cineworld who reside a couple of hundred yards away in the same retail park. Expect a large clean cinema with friendly staff but if you are one of those people who likes to go for a drink after seeing a film I wouldn't recommend traveling all the way here by bus or car because there are no proper pubs or bars in or around the retail park that stay open til late.

Review of Newland Fish Bar
13 Nov 07, 11:50
Average Chip Shop in Student Area
There are three chip shop on Newland Avenue, Newland Fish Bar being one of them. I think this is an average chippy but I don't think the fish or chips tasted particularly tasty. But it was very cheap so I guess you get what you pay for. It was still a popular chip shop with the locals and it was often serving fresh fish late in the night when some shops would stop frying.

Review of Cottingham Tandoori
13 Nov 07, 11:35
Not as Good as Kismet in the Village
This is the second indian takeaway in the village of Cottingham along with Kismet, and I don't think there is much of a difference between the two. The curries are good, the price is fairly cheap making it good value for money and you get quick service. I would definitely order here again especially the chicken masala but only if Kismet nearby was really busy.

Review of Pizza Hut
13 Nov 07, 11:30
Above Average Pizza Delivery
This is just a small delivery branch of Pizza Hut rather than an actual sit down restaurant. I have used them a few times and they have always delivered within a reasonable time but as its Pizza Hut, its a little bit more expensive than a local takeaway. I also found them to be less accommodating on orders especially on mixing toppings. However they do taste better than most local pizzas so I would definitely order from them again.

Review of Lattitude Cafe Bar
13 Nov 07, 11:26
One of Many Coffee Shops on Newland Ave
On the outside this place looks pretentious and I didn't like the interior either. The coffee doesn't taste that special but its very popular when the older students who live off Newland Avenue. Theres plenty of coffee shops on Newland Avenue so each have to set themselves apart from the other but I don't think Lattitude have got it right yet but theres potential there for the future.

Review of Hull Books
13 Nov 07, 11:22
Independent Student Second Hand Bookshop
Most of the stock at Hullbooks are second hand textbooks from students which they resell at cheap prices. I found that the textbooks here were aimed more at the science degrees with very little good business books which was very disappointing. I did notice a few bestsellers on the shelves but If you are looking for second hand fiction there are a few charity and bric a brac shops on newland avenue that might have what you are looking for.

Review of Fiddleheads Restaurant
13 Nov 07, 11:18
Good attempt at Vegetarian Cusine
Fiddleheads is the 2nd vegetarian only restaurant in Hull. I went to Fiddleheads to celebrate my friends birthday (who is vegetarian). I had previously been to Hitchcocks, the other vegetarian restaurant in Hull, so I'm basing my opinion against Hitchcocks. I found Fiddleheads not as good because of the food menu, although the food I did order did taste good, it just wasn't as comprehensive as Hitchcocks and the service was a little slower than I expected.

Review of Asian Kitchen
13 Nov 07, 11:15
Good Takeaways, Not Sure about Restaurant
Asian Kitchen on Princes Avenue was just across the road from one of my locals, the linnet and lark and is a restaurant and takeaway house. I never dined in the restaurant but it looks large enough to accommodate quite a few people. The food is very curry and I often crossed the road to pick up some post pub food. The staff were friendly and I got served very quickly all the time. Personally I would view this place as a takeaway shop rather than a restaurant.

Review of Odeon Cinemas
13 Nov 07, 11:09
Another Retail Park Multiplex
This is just outside the city center in a recently built retail park. Its easy to get too by bus and has lots of car park space. With its many big screens its very popular especially on Saturday evenings and on orange Wednesdays. You get an NUS discount if you are a student on weekday tickets so expert to find lots of students. Generally I think this Odean is still overpriced on a weekend so head down to see a movie on a weekday if you can.

Review of Dominos Pizza
13 Nov 07, 11:03
A Much Improved Dominos
Since the Pizza Hut delivery arrived on Beverley Road, Domino's Pizza seemed to have bucked up their ideas, delivering a lot quicker than they used too and a lot more helpful over the phone. The pizza's are nice too and they have priced their pizzas the same as Pizza Hut so there now isn't much to differentiate between the two of them. However I think I prefer Pizza Hut due to there being more choice of toppings.

Review of Number Fifteen
13 Nov 07, 11:00
Restaurant and Bar in Town Centre
I've stopped at Number Fifteen a few times for lunch to meet friends and they have all been good occasions. The price of the food menu was a bit high for the portions of food you get but the service is quick and the place seems neat and tidy. Its also a bar at night and I've been here for a quick drink during town center pub crawls. The drinks were a bit pricey (a bit like the food) compared to other places but they did have a better wine selection than a lot of other bars around.

Review of Mood
13 Nov 07, 10:57
Bags of Potential but No Customers
Mood Bar looks nice on the outside with lots of space and with lots of quirky nooks and crannies to get some privacy. But when I went in on the weekend it was dead quiet with a few customers mingling about. It just doesn't attract many people probably due to expensive drinks list and very little drink offers compared to its competitors. However it has potential to be a great place to go. Perhaps its biggest downfall which is beyond its control, is the fact its sandwiched between a huge walkabout pub and the local wetherspoons.

Review of Repercussion Music Co
13 Nov 07, 10:46
Above Average Music Shop on Beverley Road
Repercussion resides next door to another local music shop Antone's. Its strange to have for only a handful of music shops in Hull and even more strange for two to be next door to one another. I didn't find the shop held as much stock as Antone's although the items they do stock are of good quality. The staff were helpful when I needed to buy a beginners amp although the price was a little on the expensive side but its an independant shop so you are paying for quality and expertise.

Review of Spencers

Good Unisex Hairdressers in Residential Area
Spencer's Hair Design is my local unisex hairdressers off one of the main roads into Doncaster town center. I have been here a few times mostly because others hairdressers have been booked up or are busy. Although its a unisex hairdressers, 90% of their customers are still female. I found them very accommodating to fit me in at a good time for me, and the stylist was very good and quick. The price was cheaper than I expected for a stylist and staff seemed friendly and chatty towards me.

Review of Cooplands
13 Nov 07, 10:09
Nice Friendly Bakery in Intake
There are several small bakery branches of Coopland in Doncaster. This one is situated on one of the main roads in the area. I've stopped here many a time mostly on impulse as the smell of the bakery whaffs onto the main road and its just to hard to resist sometimes. Although it could do with a fresh look the shop is quite airy and bright and the staff were excellent. I recommend the chocolate eclairs.

Review of Cooplands
13 Nov 07, 10:07
Small Chain Bakery in Suburbs
A small branch of the Coopland Bakery which has some great tasting food, very much like Greggs is now. Unfortunately its surrounded by the local council areas so its not really somewhere to go unless you have too. That said, the food is great and the staff are very accommodating. I felt thou that the shop was still a little dingy and that a refurbishing would breath some fresh life into the shop and maybe some new customers.

Good Pub to Take The Family in Summer
This is technically a Hotel near the Hospital with a bar open to non guests. They also have a large dining area mainly aimed at families, particularly those with small children as they have a large hotel front with some playground equipment. I have been here several times as a child and adult and nothing has changed much inside. The food is good thou and it has a warm relaxing atmosphere. It's also extremely busy in the summer so arrive early especially on sunny weekends.

Pub with Good Facilities but No Character
My dad was a regular here and I used to come along with him sometimes. The pub is quite a large out of town pub but it didn't have anything about it for me apart from the brand new quiz machine in the corner. Pints are quite expensive although they do have a few ales. I think the pub is more aimed at people looking to dine as theres a large dining area and huge car park at the back of the pub. It's an ok pub but nothing special.

Surprinsgly Good Pub near Train Station
This is the closest pub to the main railway station. Me and a couple of friends stumbled in here a while back only to discover the place full of very old men. But we stay for several drinks as the landlord was very welcoming and non of the pub regulars minded us being there. I'm not sure if I would come here again thou as its a bit of the pub circuit. The only other pub close to it for 5-10mins is the leopard but full marks to the staff for being warm and friendly.

Review of Hallcross
13 Nov 07, 09:58
Formerly Good Pub Now Not So Sure
The Hallcross used to have a lot of real ales of tap but over the years this has dwindle along with the number of customers. Only on the weekend does this place come alive like many pubs in the town center. They used to have live bands playing here as well but I believe they have cut back on that now as well as there isn't much demand. I think the pub suffers from the fact its in Doncaster, but its worth stopping off for a drink on the way down the high street in the evening.

Review of Nambucca

Hey Scenester
This is a scenester pub, and by that I mean its where a lot of the indie/rock kids hang out in N19 and N7. Its got a good atmosphere and a lot of live bands play here for under a fiver, but i think there are better venues for bands in north london. I believe they partly filmed The Kooks single 'Naive' here. Drinks are ok priced and the bar staff are friendly but the toilets are a disgrace.

Review of The King Of Diamonds
31 Jul 07, 16:20
Possibly a 4 star
King of Diamonds on the outside doesnt seem like an inviting place or very big. But its got 3 floors. The bottom has two pool tables, 1 american and 1 british, the ground floor has a cracking little pub quiz machine and the main bar, whilst upstairs leads to a fairly large balcony bit. Because of its location the pub only has an atmosphere on a weekday night so I'd only go there, but its a place you can enjoy for a few drinks. Food is good and the drinks are well priced.

Review of The Sir John Oldcastle
31 Jul 07, 16:17
Lots of Seats, Good Atmosphere
For a weatherspoons, this is one of the better ones. Plenty of seating, plenty more flatscreen tvs churning out sky sports news and more importantly a very good pub quiz machine. Drinks in any weatherspoons is cheap as chips. It always seems busy when I go in but its not a young crowd.

Review of The Three Compasses
31 Jul 07, 16:14
Weatherspoonsy
I found the three compasses very weatherspoonsy which isn't a bad thing but its not a place with character or with any atmosphere, especially amongst the youth at night (they go to the fence next door) or in the weekday (they go to the castle). Drinks are well priced and the service is good. The big problem I found with the pub is that its quite dark and dingy inside as the only windows are at the front which considering its quite a long pub is quite bad. Just stop for a pint if you go in.

Review of The Castle
31 Jul 07, 16:11
Busy in Evening Rush Hour
Its the closest pub to farringdon tube stop so its very busy when its not raining outside. I say this because its not a very big pub so its standing outside only usually. The Pub's quite nice inside, your usual old Victorian pub fittings and the drinks are fairly priced. But theres nothing special about this place at all.

Small Pub for Ale Fanatics
I personally don't like my ales but a lot of people do, so if you are one of them I would recommend going to here as thats all they sell. I understand that its also one of the only few places that does sell a wide selection of ales in central London. Its a very small pub, probably the smallest Ive been too, so if its a Friday or Saturday night don't go unless its sunny otherwise you wont have anywhere to stand!

Review of Slaughtered Lamb

Movie Pub
I was told that the pub was used to film America Werewolf but due to a refit the only thing I recognized was the shape of the bar. Nevertheless it was a good reliable pub. Food is average priced for a central gastropub. I had sausage and mash which tasted ok but i didn't think I got enough food for £8.

Review of Lil Red
13 May 07, 19:09
Smaller Version of Big Red
Lil Red is about 5-10 minutes down Holloway Road from its bigger brother, Big Red. The attractions of Big Red havent move across to Lil Red as there is no space for any pool tables or enough people to create a good atmosphere. However its still a better place to drink that most of the other pubs along the bottom end of holloway road. Like most pubs its put 10 flat screen tv's on the wall playing irrelevent programmes but its clean, bright and prices match the Big Red.

Review of Mornington Crescent Underground Station

Outside the Koko
I think this station is still being worked on during the weekends, but it does the job. I'm taking stars away for it being on the woeful Northern Line. However I'm putting points back for it being 10 seconds away from the Camden Koko venue.

Review of The Quays
04 May 07, 20:57
One of the nicer pubs on Holloway Road
The Quay has a very distinct look from the outside. You can't miss it's blue exterior and flashy lights. Inside the pub is big with a second floor and on friday and saturdays its open to 4am! Which is very good in my eyes. However this only attracts the drunk males on the weekend and it has no pool or quiz machines which I personally like. The service is good and I'm aware they serve food. The place only really has atmosphere on the weekends so go then if you can.

Very Small Pub
I had heard of the Prince of Wales from Timeout a few months ago, but I wasn't expecting the pub too be so small. Theres probably enough seats for about 20 people. It's also a poorly lit pub but on the whole the pub is nice. A much older crowd of people drink here and the bar service is good. Somewhere to go for a quick pint.

Review of Archway Underground Station
01 May 07, 09:22
AH! The Northern Line
There are two problems with Archway tube. Firstly its in Archway. The second its on the Northern Line. I used the tube everyday to get to work and on 3 out of 5 times the tube was delayed. What was worst is that sometimes even at 9.30 in the morning I couldn't get on tube due to overcrowding. If you take the northern line out of the equation, then the station is fine, there maybe a beggar outside some nights but Ive never heard or seen any trouble in or around the station.
