Review of Subway

17 Apr 08, 16:41

Very Efficent Branch 4*

Even in peak times the service is quick enough for me to be out with my sandwich in 10 minutes but this is due largely to a bigger premises and thus more staff. If you are in the area avoid going between 12.45 and 1.15 as this is when the herd of farringdon office workers decend the streets for lunch.

Review of The Elbow Room

17 Apr 08, 16:13

A Middle Class Rileys 4*

I like the Elbow Rooms in Islington, it has its drawbacks with its quite generic interior (if you have been to the other branches) but it provides considerably more pool tables, good food, a large selection of drinks and is open late throughout the week. Somewhere to go if you want to get off the upper street crawl for a bit or stuck for ideas for someone to go.

Review of Sosho

17 Apr 08, 16:09

Match's younger Sibling 4*

If you have been to Match in Farringdon you will find Sosho follows the same concept, mood lightening, cocktails with trendy upbeat music. The difference apart from the location is that Sosho is considerably bigger and has a bit more natural light in thanks largely to the skylight. Best to come here after 9pm to get some atmosphere but when it is busy it has a good vibe.

Review of Match Bar

17 Apr 08, 16:03

Trendy London Bar 4*

It can be a bit dark and cramped in here on a busy friday or saturday night but I really like match. The cocktails are great, the staff are friendly and the food is very good. Somewhere to go to for one or two drinks but its too small and expensive to make a night of it here.

Review of Heebie Jeebies

09 Jan 08, 10:05

This place gives me the... 4*

A cavern of a place, if you will excuse the horrible pun, that twists below the pavement of Seel Street and guarentees a cracking night out. The clubs many bars offer the usual mix of reasonably priced drinks (reasonable for someone used to the south) and a staffed by particularly nice group of people.

The music seems to vary quite a bit so check out the night before you head over. That said with three dance floors you're like to find something that suits.

Review of North Bar

13 Nov 07, 21:40

Great Selection of Beers 4*

The North Bar on New Briggate has a great selection beers behind the bar. Probably the best selection in the centre of leeds and probably one of the biggest I've seen outside of London. Because of this wide variety the place has developed a bit of a following and is busy pretty much of the time. It certainly gives the place an atmosphere driven by the buzz of young groups of people meeting up to socialize here. I think everyone who lives or visits leeds should come here at least once and see that places outside the captial can have something about them without seeming fake.

Review of The Old Queens Head

13 Nov 07, 20:24

Tudor Pub ideal for Meeting 4*

Nearby to Penny Black the weird smelling pub on Pond Hill is a much nicer pub called the Old Queens Head. Its a very old looking building (I would say tudor) which seems to have avoided the grasp of developers for the mean time. It's very close to the Bus Station but doesn't get too much passing trade by the looks of it. Most of the people were middle aged so expect to drink in a quiet surrounding. It makes for an ideal meeting place on a weekday night.

Review of Cavells Cafe Bar

13 Nov 07, 20:02

Cool Cafe Bar in the City 4*

Cavell's Cafe Bar on High Street is a great place to relax and unwind. Theres a really nice atmosphere to the place like you would get in a typical coffee shop whilst still retaining a vibe like a bar. I was very impressed and I haven't found a cafe bar like this in London or anywhere else for that matter. The snack menu is good so if you come here try something off there rather than hitting straight for the bar for lots of drinks.

Review of Baa Bar

13 Nov 07, 19:41

Attracts Students like Bees to Honey 4*

The Baa Bar (very difficult to say properly when drinking) is in the Deansgate area of the city of Manchester. Deansgate is a very popular area now with drinkers with many new clubs and bars springing up. The Baa Bar seems to attract students like bees around honey so if you are looking for a more sophisticated venue with a classier atmosphere then head off somewhere else. That said its a good club to go too if you want a lively bar to drink in. I rate it quite highly.

Review of The Dove & Rainbow

13 Nov 07, 19:22

Once Bad Now Excellent 4*

The Dove and Rainbow in Hartshead Square used to be really bad borderline dump. Then someone came up and swept the pub of its feet and gave it a lovingly new refurbishment. As a result the place is 100 times better than before and the this has filtered through to people has the place looked as busy as ever last time I had went. If you live local and went before the refurbishment, I urge you to go again then and experience the new experience.

Review of The Cutler

13 Nov 07, 19:19

A Gem of a Place 4*

The Cutler on Cambridge Street is very deceptive. It looks very small on the outside but once you walk in it opens up a lot. The staff are very good here and service was as quick as any place I've seen. It's good some old wood decor and the toilets are clean and modern which makes a change. Somehow it wasn't that busy for a Saturday night when I went which is a real shame as the people of Sheffield are missing out on a treat here.

Review of Cubana

13 Nov 07, 19:16

Great Food, Great Music 4*

Cubana on Trippet Lane serves some fantastic tapas, probably the best in the city from what others have told me. It's also got an impressive vegetarian menu but it lacks size. it's too small a restaurant for me. However the atmosphere makes up for some of this and the quality of the food is excellent and the music is also very good. They played a lot of salsa the night I went. It's probably best with a small group of friends and I would recommend you book a table.

Review of The Belper Arms

13 Nov 07, 19:03

Really Nice Sunday Roasts 4*

The Belper Arms can be found just outside of Coalville. I've been here on a family outing for a Sunday roast and it was great. The food tastes really fresh and the staff I found to be very friendly and welcoming. The problem with pubs like the Belper Arms is that your very much restricted by transport to get there. Out of London transport isn't very regular and countryside transport even worse so unless you have a car or live within walking distances, you are going to miss out. Luckily my family have a car, but if you live within driving distance see if you can borrow one of a friend!

Review of Wig & Pen

13 Nov 07, 18:58

Tucked away behind Cathedral 4*

The Wig and Pen has resided on Campo Lane in the city center for many years and was recently called Shenanigans. The beers here are excellent and a lot of ale drinkers were at the bar so I'm guessing it has a good reputation around the local area. Because its behind the cathedral it does get too much in passing trade so actually discovering the place feels like a real exciting find. Well worth a visit to for a beer.

Review of Bricklayers Arms

13 Nov 07, 18:50

Classic Old English Village Pub 4*

The Bricklayers Arms resides on the high street in Thornton very close to Coalville in leicestershire. It's a highly regarded pub and when I went with my family it lived up to its reputation. Its your classic English country pub; welcoming in new people with friendly locals and very accommodating staff. If you are in the area I would definitely recommend going if you have the chance and try the carvery.

Review of Pizza Delight

13 Nov 07, 18:46

Delightful Pizza 4*

I've tried many pizza places when I was a student in Hull and Pizza Delight on Spring Bank west was one of them. This was because we got flyered by them near my home. There a lot of Pizza places between my house and Pizza Delight but they still delivered when promised at the same price as closer takeaways. The Pizza wasn't too bad either, I ordered the Pepperoni with some garlic slices and polished them off quickly.

Review of Disney Store

13 Nov 07, 18:36

Disney in Hull 4*

Much to my surprise whilst living in Hull, I found a quite large Disney Store. My mum really likes Winnie the Pooh things so this was the ideal place to go to, to find some elusive memorabilia. It didn't disappoint although I found the constant playing of Disney films on the TV's in store a little bit annoying after a while. I managed to find something for my Mum which was greatly received on the big day.

Review of The Red Deer

13 Nov 07, 18:33

Classic Ale Pub in Centre 4*

The Red Deer on Pitt Street is one of a few pubs near the center of Sheffield that is frequented by students. Timothy Taylor is on tap and very popular with the locals along with many other varieties of ales. I think I saw a camra accreditation at the bar so if ale is your thing then this place might be what you are looking for. It's a friendly, cosy pub with an open fire, everything you need for a nice relaxing pint. The winter brings out the cosy element of the pub so take a look if you can.

Review of The Lions Lair

13 Nov 07, 18:20

Excellent Pub with Tasteful Decor 4*

I might be wrong but the Lions Lair on Burgess Street is a gay pub. But they are open to everyone so don't be put off by the place because of this one fact. The food was nice although I expected a little bit more in terms of portions. The staff are friendly and they have now added more cocktails to the drinks menu. Overall the place is excellent throughout and well worth some of your time to check out.

Review of Muse

13 Nov 07, 18:08

Nice Bar on West Street 4*

Muse is one of many places to drink on West Street. It's a great bar with some great bar staff. I particularly like bars that have quick bar service and these guys delivered admirably. Theres a nice feel about the place and I think they are going for the more upmarket drinker but it fails a little with the quite poor cocktail menu. If you want cocktails go tot Revolution on Fitzwilliam Street otherwise stick around here for a bit on the weekend and savor the atmosphere.

Review of The Graduate

13 Nov 07, 17:59

Good Sunday Pub Quiz 4*

I'm not sure if its Called The Graduate or Graduate but it resides on Surrey Street in the city center. I came here once for the Sunday quiz which was very enjoyable if it not was for the annoying quiz master. (seemed a bit of a know it all). Its a great bar with a good atmosphere. It just needs a few more pool tables but its a pub more for a quiet pint rather than a drink in a party atmosphere. If you want that atmosphere head further in the heart of the city.

Review of The Old Monk

13 Nov 07, 17:56

Great Place to Watch the Footy 4*

The Old Monk on Norfolk Street is a great place to watch the football or just relax with an afternoon pint. The food is good as well which adds to the character and value of the pub. Apparently it used to be an bank which would explain the grand interior and high ceilings. I do know people who don't like the place in general so its going to be one of the places you either love or hate. I like it so take a look.

Review of Revolution Bar

13 Nov 07, 17:51

Nice Cocktails, Nice Bar shame about Price 4*

Yet another Revolution Vodka Bar rolls in to town, this time on Fitzwilliam Street. It's a nice looking bar in the city center but this is one of the more expensive chain bars so drinks aren't that cheap but you do get quality vodka like Grey Goose Vodka from France which you won't normally find. There also some smashing vodka cocktails which I urge you to try. The bar staff are very friendly and this adds to a great atmosphere in the place.

Review of The Oak Of Whitwick

13 Nov 07, 17:40

Stronger than Oak 4*

My Dad was born in Whitwick and has come to this Pub as Man and Boy. My Grandparents still live in the Village and the last time we went to visit we stopped off here for a Sunday roast and afternoon pint. It's a cracking little pub which was friendly and had a smashing beer garden. You could quite easily spend a whole evening here its that nice and you should relish the community atmosphere in the pub.

Review of George & Dragon

Local Run Coalville Pub with Nice Food 4*

My Dad's a local lad to Coalville and he really likes this place because its got some good ale for him and surprisingly a good food menu. It got a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. It's also run by several of the locals so it retains something special about it. Overall I really liked it here and I think you will too and I definitely recommend you trying one of the main meals of the lunchtime food menu.

Review of Bia Hoi

13 Nov 07, 16:39

Busy, Good Reputation but be wary at Weekends 4*

The Bia Hoi bar seems to suffer a bit from being too successful. Its got a good reputation so a lot of people come here on the weekend which means it gets very busy with very little seating available. Expect to get bumped around a lot but I can see why its popular, it does have one of the best atmospheres in the area and if you do get a seat then you going to be sitting on some really comfy leather sofas.

Review of Scubar

13 Nov 07, 16:27

Fun Night out at the Scubar 4*

Scubar on York Street promotes a lot of drinks offers so you will find a lot of students taking advantages of these on all days of the week. It makes for a fun and lively atmosphere and the drink offers means your night out here wont be too expensive. It has three levels, with fun to be had on all of them. Its a very nice place and I recommend coming down on a weekend to savor the atmosphere.

Review of Old Monkey

13 Nov 07, 16:26

Great Football Atmosphere Here 4*

The Old Monkey has an interesting mix of people socializing there especially on a weekend although I found the best time to go was when the football was one. Generally most pubs in the center are man city pubs rather than united pubs and the Old Monkey was no exception. When I went to watch the city game they won and the atmosphere was electric afterwards. The beer is cheap which can only add to the fun that can be had here.

Review of The Fat Cat Cafe Bar

13 Nov 07, 16:17

Popular Deansgate Bar worth heading too 4*

The Fat Cat Cafe Bar is a very popular bar in the Deansgate area of Manchester so get here early on the weekend unless you like queuing. Inside its got a relaxed atmosphere and a good selection of drinks behind the bar. It isn't going to be cheap but I find its worth it for the great atmosphere in here. I had a really great night in here and I will be definitely going back there again next time I'm in Manchester.

Review of The Ringside

13 Nov 07, 14:52

A Pub with Something for Everyone 4*

I stumbled upon The Ringside looking for a quick pint. I ended up finding a pub with something for everyone. A big screen for the sports, a big bar, a function room and a variety of rock, karaoke and quiz nights throughout the week. Definitely worth taking a trip down to especially for the pub quiz. I think this is a super pub which I look forward to going again soon.

Review of Toast

13 Nov 07, 14:43

Comfy Trendy Bar with Good Music 4*

Initially I had reservations about this bar, it seems too pretentious and too expensive but I gave the place a second chance when it was a lot busier and I found it too be very good. Good music (thats not too loud), nice comfy sofas and a quick bar service. But its still quite expensive with few drink offers so probably not someone you would want to stay all night unless you can afford it.

Review of The Walkabout

13 Nov 07, 14:27

Surprisingly Good for a Theme Chain Bar 4*

I can see why people like the place, its one of the biggest places around, drinks are quite cheap, theres lots of seating and it even has TV's in the toilet. It feels like a place that always has something going on. Its also got a stage for live bands which is very unique for Doncaster and a late night license so I can avoid going to the nightclub after the pubs shut. Even thought its a chain pub, I really like it.

Review of Minerva Hotel

13 Nov 07, 14:23

Vibarant Twenty Something Bar 4*

The Minerva Hotel on Nelson Street is a very popular destination for non-students living in hull. The beer is very good which compliments the food menu very well. Its got a friendly atmosphere, its clean, has friendly staff and lots of little places to hide away from the rest of the pub if you like your privacy. I can't really fault this place although it still misses that something special like the Lamp on Norfolk Street or The Sailmakers Arms.

Review of Rileys

13 Nov 07, 14:10

A Hidden Gem amongst the Busy City Centre 4*

I've come to Rileys a few times after a night of drinking for a few reasons. It's not busy after midnight, they serve food throughout the night, the pool tables are good value for money plus they has a jukebox and music TV on the go all the time. Its almost like a gentleman's club . Definitely buy a membership to Riley's and come here. Remember thou if you aren't a member you must be accompanied by a member to get in late at night.

Review of Sharkeys

13 Nov 07, 14:03

Great Cheap Cocktail Bar 4*

A night out is not complete without going to Sharkey's on George Street. Pretty much everyone here is under 25, most of them students. There is a good reason why people come here. They have plenty of drinks offers, the most popular is the triples for singles during the weekday nights. It also has some smashing cocktails and coupled with a lively atmosphere this is definitely one of the places to go in Hull.

Review of Biarritz

13 Nov 07, 13:43

Surprisingly Good Bar on George Street 4*

When I went to Biarritz on George Street a couple of times, I always enjoyed it. Its an excellent venue with great staff and a good atmosphere. Its mostly aimed at the 21+ crowd so if you are looking to avoid the student crowd in Hull on a night out, I would recommend coming here. Theres a few other bars on George Street so its might be best to go to these before or after to get into the party atmosphere in here.

Review of The Zoo

13 Nov 07, 13:26

Super Vegetarian Coffee Shop 4*

The Zoo is yet another coffee shop on Newland Avenue but yet its quite easy to miss it. It actually just off Newland Avenue down a back alley. Its a shame so many people miss it because it has such a relaxing atmosphere and not as overcrowded as soon of the other coffee shops on the street. Its also a vegetarian cafe with some cracking pastries. I rate it highly but not as much as Relax or Planet Coffee because I like my places to have a bit of a vibe to them. Nevertheless visiting here wouldnt be a waste of your time.

Review of Relax Coffee Shop

13 Nov 07, 13:08

Another excellent Coffee Shop on Newland Ave 4*

Relax's interior reminds me of an over-sized sitting room complete with obligatory large comfy leather sofas and soft lounge music playing over the sound system. It makes for a relaxing atmosphere to either sit on your own and unwind or chat casually to your group of friends. I found it a very pleasant experience, second only to Planet Coffee for coffee shops in and around the Newland Avenue area. Well worth a visit if you have the time.

Review of Cafe Ashoka

13 Nov 07, 13:05

One of the better Coffee Shops on Newland Ave 4*

There are several coffee shops on Newland Avenue. In my opinion this is one of the better ones. It's probably not as good as Planet Coffee because its not got enough seating but the cappuccino is very good and the service was very good. I actually tipped the waitress when I left, which I don't normally do, because she was helpful when I got served. I'm not a coffee man, I don't know my anything about the different types, so I was relived to not be frowned upon for not knowing when I ordered. Definitely worth a visit.

Review of Viking Fisheries

13 Nov 07, 13:01

Best Chippy in Hull 4*

This is my favourite chip shop in Hull, I'm not sure if they still do the offer of a tray of chips with a sausage for £2 but this was my favourite from their menu. They had a few other special offers as well mostly lunchtime offers which meant it was very busy then. Go in the evening when its a little quieter and if you go just before it shuts you might be able to get a few extra chips for free. Great staff and Great chips don't miss out on a true classic British dining experience!

Review of Pozition Nightclub

13 Nov 07, 12:57

Very Nice Nightclub with 3 Floors and Cafe 4*

Pozition is probably the biggest nightclub in Hull. Set on three floors with different music in each, it seems to accommodate a lot of people. The ground floor is usually dance/cheesy pop, the 1st floor rnb/urban and the upstairs more lounge or funk. Also on the upstairs is a small kitchen where you can buy fresh warm sandwiches as well as the usual burger and chips with a seating area for diners. Theres also a balcony where in the summertime can be a really nice place to sit outside and drink.

Review of Retro Bar

13 Nov 07, 12:55

Cool Bar to watch Sports in the Summer 4*

Retro looks quite small from the outside but its quite big inside. I think its one of the places to be for the sporting events like the England football games. I remember going there when Euro 2004 was on with it having a great atmosphere. The big screen was on plus a 2 for £3 bottle offer made the night very enjoyable. Its a very popular destination when the sporting events aren't on, particularly in the summer when people pour out onto the street giving it an almost continental feel to it. I recommended going on a pub crawl and stopping off here first as it may not be to everyones taste.

Review of Spiders Night Club

13 Nov 07, 12:54

Great Rock Venue out of Town 4*

Spiders is Hull's Rock/Goth club. I've been here a few times and initially I was very skeptical as to how it would be. But actually its a very warm and friendly place. Its very popular club but its also very small so expect to queue even if you arrive early. There are two main problems with the club, firstly its quite far out to the east of the city center meaning a taxi is really the only realistic option to get there. Secondly the men's toilets are a disgrace, small, dirty and overcrowded. But people keep coming back due to its very cheap and original cocktails, shots were under a £1 when i went including a mixer. It's worth going to spiders for the experience if rock/goth music is not your thing.

Review of Hogshead

13 Nov 07, 12:34

Very Good Hogshead Pub 4*

The hogshead is built next door to the local wetherspoons which it heavily competes against to get the locals in. It uses the same methods as them of cheap drinks and a reliable food menu but it loses out much of the time apart from the weekend. I really like this branch of hogshead, its got a big airy interior which is clean and modern. They have pool tables in either corner and big screens for the sport. Another good thing is the front patio which is good in the summer and very popular for sitting and watching the world go by. I've never had a bad time there and I'm sure you wont either.

Review of Old Zoological

13 Nov 07, 12:31

Mighty Nice Chain Pub on Princes Avenue 4*

The Old Zoo resides at the bottom of Princess Avenue and is one of several Mighty Nice pubs in Hull. It doesn't differentiate itself from the other might nice pubs in the area. The interior is light colors complimented with wood features and the food menu is comprehensive, value for money and very filling. I did however think the bar staff were a little slower than expected and the toilets were quite small for such a large venue. But if you are looking for somewhere to relax with no surprises then the Old Zoological is a good choice.

Review of Railway Hotel

13 Nov 07, 12:29

Nice Student Pub in Village 4*

There are two student campuses in Cottingham, the Railway is closest the second campus (and smaller one) so pretty much everyone in there is a student. This gives it a really lively atmosphere, the staff are friendly and helpful and drinks are understandably cheap. Its also the closest pub to Cottingham railway station (hence the name) so some people often go to the pub before catching the train into the city at night. This is a great pub to go to for a drink or for a whole night.

Review of Frankie & Benny's

13 Nov 07, 12:23

Pleasant Dining Experience 4*

Frankie and Benny s is a very successful American Italian restaurant chain. This branch is located in the largest retail park in Hull to the north of the city at Kingswood situated with several large multiplexes and retailers. If you have been to a branch somewhere else, expect exactly the same interior and menu. Its not a bad chain and I much prefer it to Pizza Hut because Frankie and Benny's offer some really good cocktails like Chiquitos in town. I also did feel rushed to eat like I did in Pizza Hut which made a rather relaxing dining experience for me and definitely worth going again.

Review of Garden Palace Restaurant

13 Nov 07, 12:20

Popular, Friendly and Tasty Food 4*

A very popular restaurant by all accounts. Garden Palace on Cottingham Road offer a large food menu and a just as large wine list. The chicken fried rice is great and I thought the staff were really warm and friendly. If you want to dine out but not want to go into the city center then this place is one of those places to go to. Just avoid the House Wine thou as its not that great.

Review of Pizza Hut

13 Nov 07, 12:11

Good Out of Town Branch of Pizza Hut 4*

Nestled in an out of town retail park (kingswood) the views are less than fantastic due to it being situated in the middle of a main road but its light and airy inside to my surprise. The staff are friendly and table service is quick. A lot of families come to this Pizza Hut so beware of kids running around and crying babies but even when it was really busy, we never had to wait long for a table to become free. Baring all this in mind I really liked this restaurant due to the helpful staff and the good quality pizza.

Review of Alliance Pharmacy

13 Nov 07, 12:00

Really Good Local Pharmacy 4*

There are only two pharmacy's which doesn't seem a lot for such a large village like Cottingham. Alliance is the better of the two, the other being Lloyd's. This is because the were more friendlier and a lot quicker to serve me that the Lloyd's Pharmacy. It's not as big as Lloyd's but it had everything I needed here so I would try going here first if you have the time.

Big Chip Portions Shame about Fish Prices 4*

Residing on Cottingham Parkway, hence the name, the Parkway Fisheries was the only chip shop I could find in Cottingham but for whats its worth, its very good. It's very popular as a result of being the only chippy especially when people leave the pubs for a post football match bite to eat. The Cod and Chips are are a bit expensive considering its closeness to the coast but they still taste fresh and more importantly the chip portions are big.

Review of Cross Keys Inn

Pub Thats Opens it Arms Out to Students 4*

Head north outside the main village thoroughfare and you will find one of the only few friendly pubs in Cottingham. As a result the atmosphere was lively, drinks was good with plenty of offers and more importantly they had a big screen for the sports.

Review of Hallgate Tavern

13 Nov 07, 11:44

One of the better friendly Pubs in Cottingham 4*

I really liked the Hallgate Tavern, it still retains much of its original features and there is a mix of locals and students without suffering in atmosphere. A lot of the pubs in Cottingham suffer when students and locals merge together. I remembered they had pints from £1.50 which were pretty good but they also had quite a lot of other drinks to cater for the students. The best time for me to go was on the weekend when you don't fancy a big night out but don't want a quiet pint either.

Review of Kismet Take Away

13 Nov 07, 11:28

One of the best Takeaways in Cottingham 4*

This take away was close to my student halls in Cottingham so it was often the takeaway of choice for those lazy Sundays. The curry was good, especially the chicken masala and it was good value for money. There aren't many takeaways in Cottingham so this place was popular amongst the students looking for a quick tasty curry but I wouldn't let that put you off if you dont like hanging around in busy takeaways.

Review of Hitchcocks

Best Veggie Place in Hull 4*

Hitchcocks is one of a few vegetarian only restaurants in Hull. Its tucked away on the outskirts of the main hub of the city center but It's always popular. Hitchcocks have several set menus and operates a quirky system. Basically the first people to book a table on that night get to pick the set menu. I went with my vegetarian friend, the menu being North African and she loved it there; it's small without losing intimacy and the food tastes fresh and filling.

Much Friendly Pub Now Its a Wetherspoons 4*

Wetherspoon's bought this pub out a few years ago because its right on the doorstep of the market which is perfect for passing trade. As a result the pub is very busy all the time including at night, has some classic old features and has a mix of youth with the usual older crowd. I liked it here but its very close to the other wetherspoons (newly built). Probably best for the a more relaxed atmosphere as its just off the pub circuit.

Local Wetherspoons with Plenty of Seating 4*

This wetherspoons was the closest pub to me for 2 years, so as a result I went there quite often. Its a new build pub so it doesn't have any redeeming features, but its big, clean, cheap and a friendly atmosphere. It was always busy but never too busy that it ran out of Sunday roasts and curries on curry club night too quickly. Try not to concentrate on the looks of the place but more of value for money.

Review of Linnet & Lark

Super Local Pub since Refurbishment 4*

This used to be my local for three years and although a lot of pubs were better in many respects, the linnet never got boring. Big screen for the sports, friendly staff and locals, pub quiz machine and a very popular live band night on a Thursday. It had a refit done a few years back which I'm still undecided about but what I would say is that this pub has something for everyone including a cracking quiz night on a Wednesday.

A Surprisngly Nice Wetherspoons 4*

The second wetherspoons in the city center, and definitely the better of the two. This place has more character mainly because they bought this building out rather than built it from scratch. The pub is huge inside, its clean, warm and friendly. One of the better pubs in the city. Because its so big, it attracts a large crowd, mostly young people rather than the usual older regulars hanging around the bar you sometimes get. Definitely worth having a drink or two there.

Review of Antone's Guitars

Really Great Guitar Shop For Beginners 4*

Antone's Guitars on Beverley Road has so many guitars in stock. From the outside the shop looks small but when you go inside they shop is far reaching due to an extended back room. Some of them are just fantastic to play and the range from a few hundred to a few thousand pounds each. Theres also Amps and Sheet music plus everything else you would expect from a music shop such as an array of plectrums. They also do repairs on guitars and amps and were also nice enough to re-string my guitar. If you are a beginner at guitars, this is the place to go too.

Review of Newland Community Pharmacy

Great Local Pharmacy Serving Hull Students 4*

Newland Avenue is full of shops but very few essential shops, so this Pharmacy is really appreciated in the local community. The staff were friendly, helpful and quick to serve me whilst the shop itself has plenty of stock. I managed to find everything I wanted very easily. It would be nice if it was open a bit later in the evening as there aren't many places around open in the late evening to get medicine from near the University.

Review of Gaskell & Webb

Very Friendly Local Pharmacy 4*

Gaskell and Webb had a refurbishment doen recently which makes the shop a lot more attractive to customers. It's a really good pharmacy near my parents house but its not particularly big. Nevertheless they still seemed to have all the essentials in stock. I used to pick up my prescriptions there which were always quick to be dealt with. The staff are friendly and helpful and I would definitely recommend coming here to pick up your medicine if you live locally.

Review of K & J Darvill

Super Butchers with Really Fresh Produce 4*

K Darvill is one of only a few local butchers left in Wheatley and the Wheatley Hills area. I highly recommend them event though they are only a small shop. We often get our Christmas Turkey from them and although its not the cheapest butchers, its the friendliest and the meat always tastes really fresh. Try getting your weekly meat from here rather than the local Sainsburys down Thorne Road.

Review of Wheatley Hills Post Office

13 Nov 07, 10:14

Very Friendly Local Post Office 4*

This used to be my local post office as a child and I always remember it being a very dark small shop with a large amount of sweets jars. It got bought by another couple and few years ago and had a refurbishment which makes the shop look terrific inside. There are two post office counters and the queues are normally quite small. The staff are friendly and it has a community feel about the place.

Review of The Shaftesbury Tavern

Nice Little Local 4*

The back of the pub is the nice bit, and it still holds a lot of its victorian features there. The rest of the decor is light and airy and theres some outdoor seating at the front. Prices are reasonable and the staff seem good.

Review of St. Johns Tavern

Gastropub in Archway 4*

St. Johns gets some good press especially in Time Out for being one of the best Gastropubs in North London. I haven't been there to eat but its quite expensive. I heard on the grapevine that Suggs from Madness eats there, If he does he will find that it has a good atmosphere with good bar service with plenty of seating to dine available. They even have a few chessboards knocking about. Definitely worth a try

Review of The White Lion Of Mortimer

Above Average Weatherspoons 4*

I like this weatherspoons, nice decor, cheap drinks (as usual), good quiz machine (as usual) but it has a bit of character about it at the back with a conservatory bit. In the summer its good to sit outside on stroud green road which has a buzz about it which I think rubs off onto the pub itself. The staff are friendly and its never too busy to take 15 mins to get served like some other pubs.

Review of The Larrik

16 May 07, 22:22

Good Value for Money 4*

The Larrick has the same qualities as the Old Diary across the road from it. Clean, lots of space, a good kitchen and a nice atmosphere. The bonus with this pub is that it has a good selection of board games, so you and your mates can have a few pints playing trival pursuit or dominoes. It also has a big screen for the big sports games as well and a few sofas around an old fireplace. If you are looking for a pub thats got atmosphere but not too loud, and you like your board games, go to the Larrick.

Review of Big Red

4 Pool Tables 4*

For me, Big Red's quality lies in it having 4 pool tables. I have yet to find a pub with more than two in London. Big red also has quite a few fruit and pinball machines but alas no quiz machine. The Big Red gives the impression thats its a mid west theme bar but thats deceptive. Big Red always has an unusual selection of people from goths and punks to students of all ages. Jonny Burrell from Razorlight was in there the other week. There aren't that many good places on Holloway Road but this is one of them.

Review of The Old Dairy

04 May 07, 15:39

Good Pub Conversion 4*

The Old Diary used to be a building for cows before market with a few of the original features still on show. This pub has everything you would ask for, clean, good kitchen, sofas, quiz machine, regular weekly pub quiz (on a thursday). On a friday night they have the cow club which is a dj playing some indie tracks until midnight which is also very good and very popular with the locals. A pub with something for everyone.

Review of The Hope and Anchor

02 May 07, 16:49

Good Gigs and Good Atmosphere 4*

The Hope has a good reputation for bands and it pretty much has at least 3 gig nights a week downstairs along the rock, indie, punk areas. Upstairs there are two pool tables and theres a few machines to lose your money in. The only thing that makes this pub bad is its size. It's very small and has only one small bar which means when its busy on a weekend its a nightmare at times to get served and irritating when people barge into you to get past. Other than that its got a lively atmosphere and the prices aren't too bad.
