Review of Men Only

Good Barbershop on Beverley Road
Men Only on Beverley Road is an barbershop near the crossroads with Cottingham Road. I only went in here the one time and this was on a whim as I was on a mission to get my haircut somewhere nice rather than a shop offer a student discount. A short back and sides isn't very taxing for a barber which was achieved admirably. I recommended it to my friend who went a week later with the same happy results.

Review of Perfect Pizzas
13 Nov 07, 18:40
Less than Perfect Pizzas
Perfect Pizzas on Princes Avenue I'm afraid to say was less than perfect. The delivery from the shop was well later then they said. On the phone they said 30mins considering the house they were delivering to was 2 minutes away on a scooter, it arrived after 50 minutes and a phone call to remind them we were waiting in between. As a result the pizza was lukewarm but after several pints anything is edible if you are really hungry. One to avoid.

Review of Disney Store
13 Nov 07, 18:36
Disney in Hull
Much to my surprise whilst living in Hull, I found a quite large Disney Store. My mum really likes Winnie the Pooh things so this was the ideal place to go to, to find some elusive memorabilia. It didn't disappoint although I found the constant playing of Disney films on the TV's in store a little bit annoying after a while. I managed to find something for my Mum which was greatly received on the big day.

Review of Noble House
13 Nov 07, 17:36
Very Nice Chicken Balti From Here
Noble House on the Parkway in Cottingham Village center is one of several Indian takeaways based in the village. It's not my favourite but its still very good value for money. I particularly enjoyed the Chicken Balti, probably the best I had whilst I lived in Hull. It is your standard suburban takeout thou but looks can be deceptive so I would recommend a takeaway from here when you next feel peckish and you live local.

Review of Ye Olde White Harte
13 Nov 07, 16:10
Classic Old Pub with Character
Ye Olde White Harte on Silver Street is one of Hull's better pubs. A lovely, big open fire, nice ales very much in the mold of the Olde Black Boy nearby with classic original features and an older more relaxed atmosphere. Its worth dropping in for a drink if you like the older drinking culture but if pool tables, jukeboxes and TV's blaring out sports constantly is your thing then don't waste you time here.

Review of Ye Olde Black Boy
13 Nov 07, 15:29
Nice Classic Pub on the High Street
The Black Boy on Hull High Street is a very popular pub because of its great range of beers and ales. Its also got the classic old interior about it that gives the place character. By this I don't mean its full of Victorian photographs and wooden furniture. Its not a place aimed at young people like me but if you appreciate the more classic drinking culture then this is one of the places to go to head too if you live or are visiting Hull.

Review of Yates's
13 Nov 07, 15:26
A Poor attempt of a Pub
Even by Yates wine lodge standards this is a poor effort of an attempt to make a nice pub to want to go too. Poor food service plus bad tasting food is not doing itself any favors in such a competitive area with the likes of wetherspoons around the corner. These are the places that give'chain' pubs a bad name which is a shame as some are of high quality.

Review of Ye Old Blue Bell
13 Nov 07, 15:23
Nice Friendly Samuel Smith Pub
The Ye Old Blue Bell on Market Place in the city center is if I very much mistaken a Samuel Smith pub, so it has quite a selection of ales and beers from around the country. The locals were nice in the Bell and I didn't feel out of place there. But I wouldn't stay for more than a drink as there quite a few places nearby that are just better than the Old Bell but take a look for yourself and discover I refreshing beer.

Review of The Whalebone
13 Nov 07, 15:21
Local Pub in an Industrial area
I hated the Whalebone when I went to it a while back. First of all, it's tucked away in an industrial area and secondly it's very much in the mold of a'locals' pub. I noticed a fairly large selection of beers and ales but I didn't think it had much variety compared to other camra recommended pubs in the area. My opinion is only go to this pub if you are local resident with a thirst for ale.

Review of The Wellington Inn
13 Nov 07, 15:14
Real Ale Pub but not for Young Drinkers
The Wellington Inn on Russell Street is another real ale pub to be found in Hull and one heavily recommended by the Campaign For Real Ales. Expect an old decor and a very wide selection of real ales but this wasn't enough for me so I didn't stop for long as its very popular with the older crowd. I can't fault its friendliness by staff and their quick service but it offers nothing for a young drinker in the city.

Review of The Old English Gentleman
13 Nov 07, 15:11
Pub for Theater Goers
The Old English Gentlemen on Mason Street is just outside the city center of Hull. It does however have some attractive features and an extremely comfortable place in which to enjoy a quiet pint. Its nestled behind the Hull New Theater so it really only attracts a theater crowd but if you are in the area and want a drink I would take a chance again and stop by for a quick drink.

Review of Hole In The Wall
13 Nov 07, 15:09
Too small a bar to take seriously
The Hole in the Wall is exactly what is says on the tin. It's as small as a hole in a wall but its a decent enough friendly local pub. I've been once and found it to have a very friendly atmosphere but there is nothing else going on for it. Its actually a long narrow shop conversion with a comfortable front bar and pool table at the back. I think it's best sampled when you are on the way to somewhere else such as the Lamp or the Old Zoological.

Review of The Ringside
13 Nov 07, 14:52
A Pub with Something for Everyone
I stumbled upon The Ringside looking for a quick pint. I ended up finding a pub with something for everyone. A big screen for the sports, a big bar, a function room and a variety of rock, karaoke and quiz nights throughout the week. Definitely worth taking a trip down to especially for the pub quiz. I think this is a super pub which I look forward to going again soon.

Review of The Whittington & Cat
13 Nov 07, 14:26
A Local Pub for Local People
I'm not a big fan of the Whittington and Cat on Commercial Road. Firstly its got too long name and secondly its on Commercial Road. It has decent beer with quite a few ales but no real choice of drinks. It has a few bits and bobs like a pool table inside to give it some edge but i felt really unwelcome there. This is just one of those'local' pubs that cities like Hull have so its best to avoid this place altogether.

Review of Minerva Hotel
13 Nov 07, 14:23
Vibarant Twenty Something Bar
The Minerva Hotel on Nelson Street is a very popular destination for non-students living in hull. The beer is very good which compliments the food menu very well. Its got a friendly atmosphere, its clean, has friendly staff and lots of little places to hide away from the rest of the pub if you like your privacy. I can't really fault this place although it still misses that something special like the Lamp on Norfolk Street or The Sailmakers Arms.

Review of The Hogshead
13 Nov 07, 14:08
Nice Burgers in a Good'Chain' Pub
For some reason the Hogshead on Whitefriar Gate attracts a lot of people, I can't really tell the difference between this place and the local wetherspoons. Maybe one reason is because everyone here is under the age of 30 whilst many other chain pubs attracts older customers as well (especially wetherspoons). The food is good, particularly the Cheese and Bacon Burger. When I went last time they had changed the menu again so they may have some cracking new burgers on offer.

Review of Rugby Tavern
13 Nov 07, 14:04
Old Pub Steeped in History
I have only been to the Rugby Tavern once on the recommendation of one of my old lecturers at University. It's supposedly a legendary old pub where the North Sea Whalers used to head to when they came back to shore. It retains a certain history to it without being cheap and crass like some other pubs I know. Theres also a casino just down the road (Napoleons) so you get a few people heading too, or coming back from there in here.

Review of Sharkeys
13 Nov 07, 14:03
Great Cheap Cocktail Bar
A night out is not complete without going to Sharkey's on George Street. Pretty much everyone here is under 25, most of them students. There is a good reason why people come here. They have plenty of drinks offers, the most popular is the triples for singles during the weekday nights. It also has some smashing cocktails and coupled with a lively atmosphere this is definitely one of the places to go in Hull.

Review of The Sailmakers Arms
13 Nov 07, 14:02
Fantastic Pub with lots of Character
I really like this place. Its got a lot of character. When you walk up to the pub you enter via a large courtyard which had tubes running a long the top of the wall. This is because they have ferrets living in the pub that wander around the tubes in the courtyard for some fresh air! When you walk in, its clean, bright, warm and friendly. Its not a big pub so service is quick, but surprisingly it has a large selection of drinks. Its a bit off the city pub crawl routes but its well worth taking a detour to fit it in.

Review of Green Bricks
13 Nov 07, 13:59
Lazy Sunday Afternoon Pub
The Green Bricks is near one of the old docks close to the shopping center. I was told that this is one a few real ale pubs around the area, however when I went they weren't selling any due to cleaning of the pipes. There is a large selection of drinks here thou and I would recommend coming here on a lazy Sunday afternoon after a pub lunch somewhere else. The relaxed quiet atmosphere coupled with that'old man' feel actually made me enjoy the place quite a lot.

Review of The Empress
13 Nov 07, 13:56
Below Average City Centre Pub
Me and my friends popped into The Empress whilst on the way to the wetherspoons, also on Alfred Gelder Street. It was on a whim due to be overly impressed by its frontage. However its just your typical average city pub. A busy atmosphere on a weekend but not worth hanging around for longer than a drink as there's nothing much going on in here in terms of music or games like a pool table.

Review of Durty Nelly's
13 Nov 07, 13:54
Traditional Irish Pub aimed at Young Crowd
Durty Nelly's by the name alone has all the hallmarks for an Irish pub aimed at cashing in on the student market. So understandably this place had a bit of a following for obvious reasons. As it's an Irish pub it plays live Irish music on a Friday and Saturday. When there isn't live music theres a jukebox full of Irish music. Theres also a giant Jenga and table football to keep the younger customers happy. It has a good atmosphere here but I personally wouldn't go here to often as there is a distinct lack of variety here.

Review of Courts Bar
13 Nov 07, 13:52
Not worth your time visiting
The Courts Bar on Bowlalley Lane in the city center is not exactly a student friendly place, it certainly has the symptoms of a local pub. Slow to get served, quite run down interior, dirty in places. I could go on but all I will say is that I won't make the effort to come here unless you know of a local who goes there regularly drinking. And even then, try only going then on a last resort.

Review of The Bonny Boat
13 Nov 07, 13:45
Local Mansfield Bitter Pub in City
The Bonny Boat on Trinity House Lane is more your'local' pub although it does have a friendly atmosphere. I believe it's a Mansfield Pub, so if you like your local beer and ales then this is the place to come too. It is small for a local but it was also rather clean although it can be a bit dingy in a few corners. It serves its purpose in the community which is for the older drinkers that surround the city. If you are young then there is nothing cater here for you so best to avoid.

Review of Biarritz
13 Nov 07, 13:43
Surprisingly Good Bar on George Street
When I went to Biarritz on George Street a couple of times, I always enjoyed it. Its an excellent venue with great staff and a good atmosphere. Its mostly aimed at the 21+ crowd so if you are looking to avoid the student crowd in Hull on a night out, I would recommend coming here. Theres a few other bars on George Street so its might be best to go to these before or after to get into the party atmosphere in here.

Review of Cheeky Monkeys
13 Nov 07, 13:39
Poor City Centre Bar
I took a gamble in trying out Cheeky Monkeys one time on the way to another bar in the city center. On this occasion the gamble didn't pay off. I didn't like it here. There was nothing about the place that suggested it was anything special. The name needs to change for a start, it just sounds like a place in a Spanish holiday resort which attracts a certain clientèle in this case lots of Chav's. There potential here due to its location but it does need to stand out more from the crowd.

Review of Goose & Granite
13 Nov 07, 13:37
Huge but devoid of Atmosphere
My friend described the Goose and Granite as a'Huge Barn of a place, seemingly devoid of atmosphere and ambiance'. I have to agree with him on this. Its just your usually pub chain bar in the middle of a city center. I have met my friend here at lunchtime once or twice and the food was quickly served and good value for money. However there is nothing special about this place and I wouldn't purposefully set out to come here in an evening.

Review of Admiral Of The Humber
13 Nov 07, 13:33
Unappealing Wetherspoons
The Admiral of the Humber is a fairly typical Wetherspoon's in a city. Built on the ground floor of an office block. But although it doesn't look great inside or outside, its very popular so it has atmosphere specially on a weekend. Curry Club on a Thursday is very popular here so if you go then, I advise you to go as a early as possible after work. The same applies for the Sunday Roasts especially the Beef dish. Go here on a city pub crawl to get the best out of it.

Review of The Zoo
13 Nov 07, 13:26
Super Vegetarian Coffee Shop
The Zoo is yet another coffee shop on Newland Avenue but yet its quite easy to miss it. It actually just off Newland Avenue down a back alley. Its a shame so many people miss it because it has such a relaxing atmosphere and not as overcrowded as soon of the other coffee shops on the street. Its also a vegetarian cafe with some cracking pastries. I rate it highly but not as much as Relax or Planet Coffee because I like my places to have a bit of a vibe to them. Nevertheless visiting here wouldnt be a waste of your time.

Review of Relax Coffee Shop
13 Nov 07, 13:08
Another excellent Coffee Shop on Newland Ave
Relax's interior reminds me of an over-sized sitting room complete with obligatory large comfy leather sofas and soft lounge music playing over the sound system. It makes for a relaxing atmosphere to either sit on your own and unwind or chat casually to your group of friends. I found it a very pleasant experience, second only to Planet Coffee for coffee shops in and around the Newland Avenue area. Well worth a visit if you have the time.

Review of Mr Macks
13 Nov 07, 13:06
Very Average Coffee Shop Cashing in on Students
I'm not a big fan of Mr Mack's. It just seems like a shop converted into a coffee shop quickly to cash in the student market as the majority of privately housed students in Hull live in and around Newland Avenue. The success of students and coffee has led to half a dozen shops springing up on Newland Avenue. I didn't think Mr Mack's offered anything unique in price, taste, interior or service so because of this I will tell you not too bother getting your coffee here unless its to takeaway.

Review of Cafe Ashoka
13 Nov 07, 13:05
One of the better Coffee Shops on Newland Ave
There are several coffee shops on Newland Avenue. In my opinion this is one of the better ones. It's probably not as good as Planet Coffee because its not got enough seating but the cappuccino is very good and the service was very good. I actually tipped the waitress when I left, which I don't normally do, because she was helpful when I got served. I'm not a coffee man, I don't know my anything about the different types, so I was relived to not be frowned upon for not knowing when I ordered. Definitely worth a visit.

Review of Viva Coffee House
13 Nov 07, 13:04
Ok Coffee House But There Are Better Close By
I met my friends here a few times and I couldn't understand why. I didn't think there was anything that set it apart form all the other coffee shops on newland avenue. Although this coffee shop was often a little quieter so you could get a seat a lot of the time without hanging about for someone to leave. I thought the hot chocolate was nice here thou but maybe they can provide a bigger size for the money. Not my first choice for drinks but could be worth trying at other shops busy times.

Review of Golden Chippy
13 Nov 07, 13:02
Below its Potenital but Nice Chips
I often stopped here on my way to my friends house. It didn't have any offers unlike the newland avenue chip shops to attract extra customers (mostly students). But apart from this I though the service was quick and the bag of chips I often got were quite nice but a little bit soggy at times, especially in busy times when they looked liked they were rushed off their feet. Go here for the fish maybe not so for the chips.

Review of Viking Fisheries
13 Nov 07, 13:01
Best Chippy in Hull
This is my favourite chip shop in Hull, I'm not sure if they still do the offer of a tray of chips with a sausage for £2 but this was my favourite from their menu. They had a few other special offers as well mostly lunchtime offers which meant it was very busy then. Go in the evening when its a little quieter and if you go just before it shuts you might be able to get a few extra chips for free. Great staff and Great chips don't miss out on a true classic British dining experience!

Review of The Aldephi
13 Nov 07, 13:00
Very Small Live Venue in Hull
The Aldephi has a good reputation in Hull for have live bands on. Radiohead, Oasis and the LA's have played here. If you like small live venues then the Aldephi has a certain aura about it. I personally don't like it. Its too small, too dingy inside, the entrance fee i paid was £7 and drinks £3. I would avoid this place unless you like seeing new live bands playing. I'm not too bothered about the Aldpehi but I know people who love this place with a passion.

Review of The Piper
13 Nov 07, 12:58
Good Student Nightclub on Newland Avenue
The piper is a pub/club half way up Newland Avenue. Its only worth going to on a student night which is usually on a Monday night. Its a nice venue but when its gets busy it can take an age to get served. Its also really hot inside and they force use to use a cloakroom if you have a coat with you. The drinks are cheap if you get a membership card but expect the queue on a student night due to its popularity. I've been here many times but most of the nights have merged into one due to the lack of variety at the place.

Review of Pozition Nightclub
13 Nov 07, 12:57
Very Nice Nightclub with 3 Floors and Cafe
Pozition is probably the biggest nightclub in Hull. Set on three floors with different music in each, it seems to accommodate a lot of people. The ground floor is usually dance/cheesy pop, the 1st floor rnb/urban and the upstairs more lounge or funk. Also on the upstairs is a small kitchen where you can buy fresh warm sandwiches as well as the usual burger and chips with a seating area for diners. Theres also a balcony where in the summertime can be a really nice place to sit outside and drink.

Review of Retro Bar
13 Nov 07, 12:55
Cool Bar to watch Sports in the Summer
Retro looks quite small from the outside but its quite big inside. I think its one of the places to be for the sporting events like the England football games. I remember going there when Euro 2004 was on with it having a great atmosphere. The big screen was on plus a 2 for £3 bottle offer made the night very enjoyable. Its a very popular destination when the sporting events aren't on, particularly in the summer when people pour out onto the street giving it an almost continental feel to it. I recommended going on a pub crawl and stopping off here first as it may not be to everyones taste.

Review of Spiders Night Club
13 Nov 07, 12:54
Great Rock Venue out of Town
Spiders is Hull's Rock/Goth club. I've been here a few times and initially I was very skeptical as to how it would be. But actually its a very warm and friendly place. Its very popular club but its also very small so expect to queue even if you arrive early. There are two main problems with the club, firstly its quite far out to the east of the city center meaning a taxi is really the only realistic option to get there. Secondly the men's toilets are a disgrace, small, dirty and overcrowded. But people keep coming back due to its very cheap and original cocktails, shots were under a £1 when i went including a mixer. It's worth going to spiders for the experience if rock/goth music is not your thing.

Review of The Waterfront
13 Nov 07, 12:51
Poor Nights but Nice Venue
I only went to waterfront once when I lived in Hull. The main reason for this is because I didn't like it. It was mostly down to the club nights they had there. It was either cheesy pop/trance or urban r'n'b. I don't like either. But the venue itself is nice and the doormen weren't overly aggressive as they sometimes are when there is a large queue. The drinks could have been cheaper although I hear they have a student night now that offers drinks offers. Personally I think this is just aimed at the student market so if you aren't a student its best to avoid this place and go somewhere else.

Review of Welly Club
13 Nov 07, 12:50
Best Nightclub in Hull
My favourite nightclub in Hull. Its best to come here for the Rock and Indie night when theres a good atmosphere and a great selection of tracks played. They play a lot more live bands here in the now refurbished main room and they also have a Club NME night on a Thursday. They usually have a drinks offer on every night like 2 bottles of beer for £3 which means you can have a cheap night out as well as having a laugh. I definitely recommend everyone to go here at some point.

Review of Segals Gifts
13 Nov 07, 12:47
Avearge Shopping Centre Gift Shop
Segals Gift Shop is one of those places to buy little things like stuff for Christmas or Halloween. There were a lot more novelty items in there than I thought and a lot less toys. I was disappointed to come here but I was surprised by the lack of variety in gifts in had considering the Princes Quay shopping center had several gift shops. However I think its worth going to if order to find that elusive and original novelty item that big brand shops don't stock.

Review of The Lamp
13 Nov 07, 12:44
Fantastic Bar near City Centre
The Lamp on Norfolk Street is one of my favourite bars in Hull. Its basically a detached house just off the busy crossroad outside the city center boundary. Its got a very arty feel to it inside, very much the place that would have comfy sofas with old church pews for seating scattered about. In the back of the bar there are several pool tables which are quite cheap to play. They also do reasonably priced beer pitchers but what really sets this bar apart is the lively atmosphere this place has making it a great place to drink.

Review of Campanile Hotel Restaurant
13 Nov 07, 12:43
Good Hotel Rooms and Central location
The campanile hotel is a very good value hotel in Hull. They are good sized rooms and the price is lower than many of the other chain hotels in the city center. The one thing I have against the hotel is that it overlooks as busy dual carriageway that circles around Hull city center but they have tried to cover the view of the road by planting trees around the building. If you want to go out for a drink there is a restaurant but I recommend going next door to the Lamp which is a bar full of character.

Review of Old Grey Mare Hotel

Large Might Nice Pub outside of University
This is one of several Mighty Nice Chain pubs in Hull. This one is opposite the main entrance to Hull University so its very popular with the students. Ive spent many a lunchtime here and I cant think of a bad time I had here. Theres a big screen and plenty smaller TV's for the sports events, a pool table and a very great food menu which keeps added new snacks on. Take a visit there when you are in a curious mood.

Review of Circus Circus
13 Nov 07, 12:41
Student Bar with Cheap Drinks Offers
Circus Circus is basically a student bar opened as a pre-club warm up bar on a weekday and a late night bar on the weekends. Inside's interior is interesting, the more striking piece are the dodgems cars hanging off the roof. They have sacrificed a lot of seating to accommodate as many people as they can. Theres plenty of drinks offers and when the student crowd turn up has a good atmosphere. Personally I would exploit the cheap drinks and leave rather than hang around for a bit and have a chat as you can do that better somewhere else.

Review of Gardeners Arms
13 Nov 07, 12:38
Superb Pub especially In Summer
The Gardeners is one of only a handful of pubs I can think with an outside beer garden on the front. It also overlooks one of the busiest roads in Hull but this is insignificant especially in the summertime when pretty much everyone student in the are descends on the place. Its actually got two parts to it inside. The main entrance leads to a small bar where the old features dominate the interior. If you go round the side there is another entrance that leads to a new bit built on. Here you will find loads of pool tables, video jukebox and quiz machines plus a few drink offers. This is a great pub day or night, rain or shine.

Review of Grafton Hotel
13 Nov 07, 12:37
Run down Pub off Newland Avenue
I'm told the Grafton is owned by the lead singer of the beautiful south but if it is true then I think they need to spend more money on the interior. Its an old pub in the middle of a residential street, but I found it a bit too smelly and dingy inside. Grafton street's residents are pretty much all students and many of them flock to this pub so it gives it a lively feel to the place but its not enough to compensate the run down feel of the place.

Review of Hogshead
13 Nov 07, 12:34
Very Good Hogshead Pub
The hogshead is built next door to the local wetherspoons which it heavily competes against to get the locals in. It uses the same methods as them of cheap drinks and a reliable food menu but it loses out much of the time apart from the weekend. I really like this branch of hogshead, its got a big airy interior which is clean and modern. They have pool tables in either corner and big screens for the sport. Another good thing is the front patio which is good in the summer and very popular for sitting and watching the world go by. I've never had a bad time there and I'm sure you wont either.

Review of Old Zoological
13 Nov 07, 12:31
Mighty Nice Chain Pub on Princes Avenue
The Old Zoo resides at the bottom of Princess Avenue and is one of several Mighty Nice pubs in Hull. It doesn't differentiate itself from the other might nice pubs in the area. The interior is light colors complimented with wood features and the food menu is comprehensive, value for money and very filling. I did however think the bar staff were a little slower than expected and the toilets were quite small for such a large venue. But if you are looking for somewhere to relax with no surprises then the Old Zoological is a good choice.

Review of Napoleons Casino
13 Nov 07, 12:21
Good Casino but nothing Special
Napoleons is a fairly large casino in the center of Hull. A couple of friends of mine had membership cards to this place which they used quite often after a late night session in the pub. It's a nice clean casino with a separate restaurant to the side of the playing tables. The casino offers a gambling experience in Hull but not a unique gambling experience. Like a lot of things in Hull it doesn't try to go that extra mile to be or offer something a little bit different than the rest of the competition.

Review of Garden Palace Restaurant
13 Nov 07, 12:20
Popular, Friendly and Tasty Food
A very popular restaurant by all accounts. Garden Palace on Cottingham Road offer a large food menu and a just as large wine list. The chicken fried rice is great and I thought the staff were really warm and friendly. If you want to dine out but not want to go into the city center then this place is one of those places to go to. Just avoid the House Wine thou as its not that great.

Review of May Sum
13 Nov 07, 12:18
Nice Buffet Shame about the Size
May Sum opened soon after I went to University in Hull. Its basically a small Chinese buffet restaurant where you can eat as much as you like for a set fee around £10. It was a nice place to go and the food was pretty tasty. I found the staff friendly but the place seemed to small to really enjoy the food and relax. I went on the weekend which was when its at its busiest so I felt a little rushed to eat and get out so they could accommodate new customers. It's probably best to go on a weekday night or a weekend lunchtime if you don't want to be hurried.

Review of Pizza Hut
13 Nov 07, 12:14
Inner City Pizza Hut
I thought this branch of Pizza Hut was quite small and I was unimpressed by the time it took to get food served. I waited 40mins for a small pizza and whats more its extremely busy all the time here especially for the lunchtime buffet. So if you do want to go for that then leave work really early. Overall I was unimpressed with the restaurant which is a shame as the food at Pizza Hut is really good and the environment doesn't do it justice.

Review of Newland Fisheries
13 Nov 07, 12:09
Below Average Chippy
I'm afraid to say Newland Fisheries is yet another average fish and chip shop in the HU5 area of Hull. There was nothing special about the place in terms of food quality or prices. The staff were friendly thou and often very generous (almost too much) with the salt and vinegar on bags of chips. If you aren't too bothered about the taste of food and just hungry for something then this place is a someone to go otherwise head to Viking instead.

Review of Newland Fish Bar
13 Nov 07, 11:50
Average Chip Shop in Student Area
There are three chip shop on Newland Avenue, Newland Fish Bar being one of them. I think this is an average chippy but I don't think the fish or chips tasted particularly tasty. But it was very cheap so I guess you get what you pay for. It was still a popular chip shop with the locals and it was often serving fresh fish late in the night when some shops would stop frying.

Review of Pizza Planet
13 Nov 07, 11:32
A Distinctly Average Takeaway Shop
I stopped off at Pizza Planet on my way home from the city center one evening based on my hunger and the groovy name. I should have waited until I got home to have eaten something as the pizza took an age to cook, (25mins) it wasn't very warm when I did eventually get to eat it and It didn't taste very fresh. All in all Pizza Planet is not value for money making it a distinctly average pizza takeaway.

Review of Pizza Hut
13 Nov 07, 11:30
Above Average Pizza Delivery
This is just a small delivery branch of Pizza Hut rather than an actual sit down restaurant. I have used them a few times and they have always delivered within a reasonable time but as its Pizza Hut, its a little bit more expensive than a local takeaway. I also found them to be less accommodating on orders especially on mixing toppings. However they do taste better than most local pizzas so I would definitely order from them again.

Review of Lattitude Cafe Bar
13 Nov 07, 11:26
One of Many Coffee Shops on Newland Ave
On the outside this place looks pretentious and I didn't like the interior either. The coffee doesn't taste that special but its very popular when the older students who live off Newland Avenue. Theres plenty of coffee shops on Newland Avenue so each have to set themselves apart from the other but I don't think Lattitude have got it right yet but theres potential there for the future.

Review of Hull Books
13 Nov 07, 11:22
Independent Student Second Hand Bookshop
Most of the stock at Hullbooks are second hand textbooks from students which they resell at cheap prices. I found that the textbooks here were aimed more at the science degrees with very little good business books which was very disappointing. I did notice a few bestsellers on the shelves but If you are looking for second hand fiction there are a few charity and bric a brac shops on newland avenue that might have what you are looking for.

Review of Hitchcocks
13 Nov 07, 11:20
Best Veggie Place in Hull
Hitchcocks is one of a few vegetarian only restaurants in Hull. Its tucked away on the outskirts of the main hub of the city center but It's always popular. Hitchcocks have several set menus and operates a quirky system. Basically the first people to book a table on that night get to pick the set menu. I went with my vegetarian friend, the menu being North African and she loved it there; it's small without losing intimacy and the food tastes fresh and filling.

Review of Fiddleheads Restaurant
13 Nov 07, 11:18
Good attempt at Vegetarian Cusine
Fiddleheads is the 2nd vegetarian only restaurant in Hull. I went to Fiddleheads to celebrate my friends birthday (who is vegetarian). I had previously been to Hitchcocks, the other vegetarian restaurant in Hull, so I'm basing my opinion against Hitchcocks. I found Fiddleheads not as good because of the food menu, although the food I did order did taste good, it just wasn't as comprehensive as Hitchcocks and the service was a little slower than I expected.

Review of Chiquito's
13 Nov 07, 11:16
One of the best Restaurants in Hull
This is one of my favourite restaurants in Hull. They do fantastic cocktails here and on a weekday evening they often do cocktail offers. The food is fantastic as well especially the Chicken Fatija. Service is quick and the price was a bit less than I thought it might be. Its a big restaurant near the Odean cinema so they get busy on the weekends especially in the evening so if you prefer I more relaxed atmosphere when dining I would recommend coming on a weekday evening, even if its just to take advantage of the cocktail offers.

Review of Asian Kitchen
13 Nov 07, 11:15
Good Takeaways, Not Sure about Restaurant
Asian Kitchen on Princes Avenue was just across the road from one of my locals, the linnet and lark and is a restaurant and takeaway house. I never dined in the restaurant but it looks large enough to accommodate quite a few people. The food is very curry and I often crossed the road to pick up some post pub food. The staff were friendly and I got served very quickly all the time. Personally I would view this place as a takeaway shop rather than a restaurant.

Review of Moonlight Tandoori (Hull)
13 Nov 07, 11:12
Below Average Curries near University
Moonlight Tandoori on Cottingham Road is an average Indian Takeaway restaurant. There are plenty of the same style takeaways not just in Hull but across the UK. You basically get what you pay for with Moonlight Tandoori. The food isn't anything special and it would have been nice if they have more food offers but its edible and the service was quick. I must admit I only came in here on impulse rather than being recommended but on this experience I wont be recommended it too anyone.

Review of Planet Coffee
13 Nov 07, 11:10
Best Coffee Shop on Newlands Avenue
I liked Planet Coffee, i think its the biggest on Newland Avenue and probably the best. Its bright and airy inside with several comfy sofas inside which give it a nice homely feel. I actually had a Hot Chocolate here as I'm not a big fan of coffee and found it to be really creamy and good value for money. It does get busy here so try and avoid going on weekends if you don't like hanging around for somewhere to sit.

Review of Odeon Cinemas
13 Nov 07, 11:09
Another Retail Park Multiplex
This is just outside the city center in a recently built retail park. Its easy to get too by bus and has lots of car park space. With its many big screens its very popular especially on Saturday evenings and on orange Wednesdays. You get an NUS discount if you are a student on weekday tickets so expert to find lots of students. Generally I think this Odean is still overpriced on a weekend so head down to see a movie on a weekday if you can.

Review of Dominos Pizza
13 Nov 07, 11:03
A Much Improved Dominos
Since the Pizza Hut delivery arrived on Beverley Road, Domino's Pizza seemed to have bucked up their ideas, delivering a lot quicker than they used too and a lot more helpful over the phone. The pizza's are nice too and they have priced their pizzas the same as Pizza Hut so there now isn't much to differentiate between the two of them. However I think I prefer Pizza Hut due to there being more choice of toppings.

Review of Zachariah Pearson
13 Nov 07, 10:54
Local Wetherspoons with Plenty of Seating
This wetherspoons was the closest pub to me for 2 years, so as a result I went there quite often. Its a new build pub so it doesn't have any redeeming features, but its big, clean, cheap and a friendly atmosphere. It was always busy but never too busy that it ran out of Sunday roasts and curries on curry club night too quickly. Try not to concentrate on the looks of the place but more of value for money.

Review of Linnet & Lark
13 Nov 07, 10:51
Super Local Pub since Refurbishment
This used to be my local for three years and although a lot of pubs were better in many respects, the linnet never got boring. Big screen for the sports, friendly staff and locals, pub quiz machine and a very popular live band night on a Thursday. It had a refit done a few years back which I'm still undecided about but what I would say is that this pub has something for everyone including a cracking quiz night on a Wednesday.

Review of Three John Scotts
13 Nov 07, 10:50
A Surprisngly Nice Wetherspoons
The second wetherspoons in the city center, and definitely the better of the two. This place has more character mainly because they bought this building out rather than built it from scratch. The pub is huge inside, its clean, warm and friendly. One of the better pubs in the city. Because its so big, it attracts a large crowd, mostly young people rather than the usual older regulars hanging around the bar you sometimes get. Definitely worth having a drink or two there.

Review of Repercussion Music Co
13 Nov 07, 10:46
Above Average Music Shop on Beverley Road
Repercussion resides next door to another local music shop Antone's. Its strange to have for only a handful of music shops in Hull and even more strange for two to be next door to one another. I didn't find the shop held as much stock as Antone's although the items they do stock are of good quality. The staff were helpful when I needed to buy a beginners amp although the price was a little on the expensive side but its an independant shop so you are paying for quality and expertise.

Review of Antone's Guitars
13 Nov 07, 10:43
Really Great Guitar Shop For Beginners
Antone's Guitars on Beverley Road has so many guitars in stock. From the outside the shop looks small but when you go inside they shop is far reaching due to an extended back room. Some of them are just fantastic to play and the range from a few hundred to a few thousand pounds each. Theres also Amps and Sheet music plus everything else you would expect from a music shop such as an array of plectrums. They also do repairs on guitars and amps and were also nice enough to re-string my guitar. If you are a beginner at guitars, this is the place to go too.

Review of Newland Community Pharmacy
13 Nov 07, 10:36
Great Local Pharmacy Serving Hull Students
Newland Avenue is full of shops but very few essential shops, so this Pharmacy is really appreciated in the local community. The staff were friendly, helpful and quick to serve me whilst the shop itself has plenty of stock. I managed to find everything I wanted very easily. It would be nice if it was open a bit later in the evening as there aren't many places around open in the late evening to get medicine from near the University.
