Review of Beckett's Bank

13 Nov 07, 21:27

Stereotypical City Centre Pub 3*

Residing on Park Row, Beckett's Bank is the name of one of the Wetherspoon city centre pubs in Leeds. It's a huge place inside probably exasperated by the huge ceiling. Because it's huge, it attracts a lot of people on the weekend especially when they do one of their theme weeks or nights like Halloween or recently the real ale festival. Nevertheless its a good pub and you get what you pay for.

Review of Angel Inn

13 Nov 07, 21:21

Samuel Smith Pub in Centre of Leeds 3*

Tucked away down an alley, between two shopping precincts, The Angel is a large pub in the centre of Leeds. This is a typical Samuel Smith pub with old wood interior and cheap beer on tap. It's got a bit of character about it and the staff are very friendly but because the beer is cheap it only seems to attract people who you wouldn't want to take home.

Review of The Seven Oaks

13 Nov 07, 20:49

Good atmosphere and helpful bar staff 3*

The Seven Oaks is tucked away on the edge of Manchester's Chinatown. Its got a good layout to it and some decent beers. I was impressive by how quick the service was and the bars got a great atmosphere to it. I think this place is probably best with a small group of friends, I recommend booking a table here for dinner if you can.

Review of Thirsty Scholar

13 Nov 07, 20:43

Thirsty Work 3*

The Thirsty Scholar on New Wakefield Street has a terrific name for a pub. Its a bit dark and dingy inside and is very much a rock and roll on the jukebox kind of pub. This certain gives the place character but I couldn't find many drinks I wanted in here but the staff were helpful enough to find something for me. The atmosphere is nice in here and I could see by the posters that they have DJ's in on a weekend. I have only been here once so I cant say whats its like then but on first impression its worth giving it a go.

Review of The Sandbar

13 Nov 07, 20:38

Good Pub with Plenty of Potential for more 3*

The Sandbar on Grosvenor Street has many great things about it. A good selection of continental beers (which I rarely see outside of London) some fine ales for those with a specific palate. Its got a relaxing atmosphere which is good when many bars in the city have the air of being rushed into drinking. The Jukebox seemed pretty good as well. All in all a good pub from top to toe.

Review of The Waldorf Hotel

13 Nov 07, 20:35

Good place to stop when traveling 3*

Don't be fooled by the Waldorf's name. Yes its a hotel as in it has rooms for the night but its got a good bar inside here. The best thing in here is the mix of people, young and old. The young coming for the cheap drinks and the old coming for the real ales. It gets busy here on match days so if you do come now, get here early that said its a good place to get a drink before or after getting the train. (Due to its proximity with Piccadilly train station)

Review of The Dog & Partridge

13 Nov 07, 20:27

Nice Pub with Live Music on Trippet Lane 3*

There are one or two nice pubs on Trippet Lane, the Dog and Partridge is another good pub. I was a bit worried at first to enter but my nerves were settled by a very smiley/friendly bar staff member. It seems the locals like Guinness here as I think I was the only person there without one so if Guinness is your thing maybe here is the place to try it. The pub has a lot of live bands and it almost reminded me of the Leopold in Doncaster but a lot more classier.

Review of The Old Queens Head

13 Nov 07, 20:24

Tudor Pub ideal for Meeting 4*

Nearby to Penny Black the weird smelling pub on Pond Hill is a much nicer pub called the Old Queens Head. Its a very old looking building (I would say tudor) which seems to have avoided the grasp of developers for the mean time. It's very close to the Bus Station but doesn't get too much passing trade by the looks of it. Most of the people were middle aged so expect to drink in a quiet surrounding. It makes for an ideal meeting place on a weekday night.

Review of The Penny Black

13 Nov 07, 20:21

Drunks, Football and Weird Smells 1*

I wondered in Penny Black by mistake. Residing on Pond Hill its pretty much a football pub, meaning the only time it has atmosphere is when the footballs on. When I went in there were a few drunks which for 3 in the afternoon was a little unsettling. There's a few weird smells in here as well, like damp carpet but mixed in with something else. I was happy to leave this pub when I could. 1 Star is all it will get from me!

Review of The Red Lion

13 Nov 07, 20:15

Good for the Weekend 3*

The Red Lion on Charles Street is a great pub in the center of Sheffield. Theres a lot of beers on tap and even a few ales as well to keep the older drinkers happy. There is much of an atmosphere here unless it match day at Bramall Lane but the mix of young and old drinkers works really well here without looking seedy or being quite aggressive. Sadly thou it lacks something special about it, its the people that make a place at the end of the day so this is really a weekend pub.

Review of Wetherspoons

13 Nov 07, 20:06

Average Wetherspoons and Low Prices 3*

A good city center wetherspoons in Piccadilly. I went in the afternoon after traveling the morning to get to Manchester on the train so its wasn't that busy inside. As a result I cant tell you whether this place is good enough in the night time but its a huge place with lots of seats and there was nearly as many staff as customers when I stopped by so the signs are good. Not an awe inspiring pub but be at awe with the low prices!

Review of The City Road Inn

13 Nov 07, 19:55

Sub Standard City Pub 2*

The City Road Inn isn't an outstanding place to go, its what I would call a'safe bet'. The bar staff are friendly and polite at the bar, the jukebox is good and the drinks are well priced. I only came in here once or twice but it seems to be a football kind of pub. I know they screen the big sporting events here but the pub doesn't have anything about it apart from this.

Review of Churchills

13 Nov 07, 19:47

Overrated'Fun Pub' 2*

Churchill's on Chorlton Street is slap bang in the heart of the action near Canal Street. Its the archetypal'fun pub' although if you think a pub full of drunk screaming women in groups is fun then do visit here. The staff were a little bit blunt at the bar but what really annoyed me were the door mens policy of letting in hundreds of girls in and turning guys away for no real reason. It's a good venue thou but I wont be going back there again.

Review of Empire Bar

13 Nov 07, 19:26

It's a bit of a'Meat Market' in here 1*

I can describe the Empire Bar in Charter Square very easily; it's a bit of a meat market in here. The door staff looked like they weren't doing there job as I'm sure several girls in there were no where near the legal age of drinking. It's a bit of a tip inside as well so you aren't missing much in that department either. I didn't enjoy this bar at all and was quite relieved the leave as quickly as I did (which was about 15 minutes).

Review of The Dove & Rainbow

13 Nov 07, 19:22

Once Bad Now Excellent 4*

The Dove and Rainbow in Hartshead Square used to be really bad borderline dump. Then someone came up and swept the pub of its feet and gave it a lovingly new refurbishment. As a result the place is 100 times better than before and the this has filtered through to people has the place looked as busy as ever last time I had went. If you live local and went before the refurbishment, I urge you to go again then and experience the new experience.

Review of The Cutler

13 Nov 07, 19:19

A Gem of a Place 4*

The Cutler on Cambridge Street is very deceptive. It looks very small on the outside but once you walk in it opens up a lot. The staff are very good here and service was as quick as any place I've seen. It's good some old wood decor and the toilets are clean and modern which makes a change. Somehow it wasn't that busy for a Saturday night when I went which is a real shame as the people of Sheffield are missing out on a treat here.

Review of The Cavendish

13 Nov 07, 19:13

Well Below My Expectations 1*

West Street is the place to go in Sheffield but avoid the place known as The Cavendish. It's full of students but this isn't what makes it bad. The service is dreadful at the bar, often rushed so you never quite get a full pint from the tap. They are also quite rude but the chips were nice but this isn't going to change my mind about the place. It's got potential but it needs someone new to come in and start from scratch again.

Review of The Bedroom

13 Nov 07, 19:10

1 out of 5 purely for the people in there 1*

What a dreadful place the Bedroom is. It attracts certain types of people; ladies who like to wear a lot of white and get drunk in groups, middle aged people who think they are 18 again and often dressed accordingly and a smattering of Chav's ready to exploit the older ladies. Regardless of the Bedrooms ok decor, reasonable beer prices and quick bar service, I can only give the Bedroom a resounding 1 out of 5.

Review of The Belper Arms

13 Nov 07, 19:03

Really Nice Sunday Roasts 4*

The Belper Arms can be found just outside of Coalville. I've been here on a family outing for a Sunday roast and it was great. The food tastes really fresh and the staff I found to be very friendly and welcoming. The problem with pubs like the Belper Arms is that your very much restricted by transport to get there. Out of London transport isn't very regular and countryside transport even worse so unless you have a car or live within walking distances, you are going to miss out. Luckily my family have a car, but if you live within driving distance see if you can borrow one of a friend!

Review of Wig & Pen

13 Nov 07, 18:58

Tucked away behind Cathedral 4*

The Wig and Pen has resided on Campo Lane in the city center for many years and was recently called Shenanigans. The beers here are excellent and a lot of ale drinkers were at the bar so I'm guessing it has a good reputation around the local area. Because its behind the cathedral it does get too much in passing trade so actually discovering the place feels like a real exciting find. Well worth a visit to for a beer.

Review of Bricklayers Arms

13 Nov 07, 18:50

Classic Old English Village Pub 4*

The Bricklayers Arms resides on the high street in Thornton very close to Coalville in leicestershire. It's a highly regarded pub and when I went with my family it lived up to its reputation. Its your classic English country pub; welcoming in new people with friendly locals and very accommodating staff. If you are in the area I would definitely recommend going if you have the chance and try the carvery.

Review of The Red Deer

13 Nov 07, 18:33

Classic Ale Pub in Centre 4*

The Red Deer on Pitt Street is one of a few pubs near the center of Sheffield that is frequented by students. Timothy Taylor is on tap and very popular with the locals along with many other varieties of ales. I think I saw a camra accreditation at the bar so if ale is your thing then this place might be what you are looking for. It's a friendly, cosy pub with an open fire, everything you need for a nice relaxing pint. The winter brings out the cosy element of the pub so take a look if you can.

Review of The Lions Lair

13 Nov 07, 18:20

Excellent Pub with Tasteful Decor 4*

I might be wrong but the Lions Lair on Burgess Street is a gay pub. But they are open to everyone so don't be put off by the place because of this one fact. The food was nice although I expected a little bit more in terms of portions. The staff are friendly and they have now added more cocktails to the drinks menu. Overall the place is excellent throughout and well worth some of your time to check out.

Review of The Museum

13 Nov 07, 18:16

Average Pub, Not Impressed Too Much 3*

The Museum on Orchid Street has gone through several changes in its time. It's now gone back to its original name'The Museum'. It's quiet ironically really as I found the atmosphere in here very quite like a Museum but it does have a good outdoor bit so in the Summer things perk up a bit. If you like your ales this has a few on tap and the beer prices are too bad either for a city center pub.

Review of Fagans

13 Nov 07, 18:05

A full Flavour Irish Pub 5*

As you can probably tell by the name, Fagan's on Broad Lane is an Irish pub but not in the tacky mold of an O'Neills. Its a cracking little pub; friendly, unpretentious, full of character, excellent beer and a some really tasty food as well. They do a lot of live music usually at the weekend with a distinct Irish flavor and this merely adds to an already great atmosphere. One of the better pubs in Sheffield City Centre.

Review of The Frog & Parrot

13 Nov 07, 18:02

Pub for Students on Weekend 3*

The Frog and Parrot is a pub on Division Street that's pretty much a student pub now which makes its a bit disappointing when the students aren't around. However the pub stills retains some character and they have some half decent beers here if thats what you are looking for in a pub. But I think its a Saturday night pub on a city pub crawl and nothing else so try it then rather than for a quiet weekday pint after work.

Review of The Graduate

13 Nov 07, 17:59

Good Sunday Pub Quiz 4*

I'm not sure if its Called The Graduate or Graduate but it resides on Surrey Street in the city center. I came here once for the Sunday quiz which was very enjoyable if it not was for the annoying quiz master. (seemed a bit of a know it all). Its a great bar with a good atmosphere. It just needs a few more pool tables but its a pub more for a quiet pint rather than a drink in a party atmosphere. If you want that atmosphere head further in the heart of the city.

Review of The Old Monk

13 Nov 07, 17:56

Great Place to Watch the Footy 4*

The Old Monk on Norfolk Street is a great place to watch the football or just relax with an afternoon pint. The food is good as well which adds to the character and value of the pub. Apparently it used to be an bank which would explain the grand interior and high ceilings. I do know people who don't like the place in general so its going to be one of the places you either love or hate. I like it so take a look.

Review of Swim Inn

13 Nov 07, 17:48

Slightly Disappointing Pub 3*

A stereotypical city center pub. Nice and friendly atmosphere to the place with some very cheap drinks. Monday Club prices are even cheaper in the north than London. There are believe it or not wetherspoons pubs with a certain edge to it, alas the Swin Inn is not one of them but its a good attempt nevertheless. Its a pub to start off a night if you are new to the city but you will find several better pubs around the corner when you venture outside which is why I have rated it 3 stars.

Review of Wetherspoons

13 Nov 07, 17:45

Large Wetherspoons with Outdoor Patio 3*

A nice and clean Wetherspoons in the city center of Sheffield with upstairs and downstairs bars making this one of the biggest in the country (I think). Theres also a small outside patio which is ideal for the summer when you want to relax and unwind in the sun. Its usually a good place to get things started if you are going for a pub crawl around the center. Although the food isn't exceptional its good enough and there is a good atmosphere around the place to warrant a visit.

Review of Yates's

13 Nov 07, 17:43

Reliable Yate's Pub 3*

Compared to other Yates in the UK I have been too, the one on Division Street in the middle of Sheffield is one of the better ones but compared to other chain pubs its still behind many of them. There wasn't anything particularly bad about the place, the food was good, friendly staff, nice and clean but it just didn't have anything about it to make me want to go there again which is a bit of a shame considering the Staff's hard work.

Review of The Oak Of Whitwick

13 Nov 07, 17:40

Stronger than Oak 4*

My Dad was born in Whitwick and has come to this Pub as Man and Boy. My Grandparents still live in the Village and the last time we went to visit we stopped off here for a Sunday roast and afternoon pint. It's a cracking little pub which was friendly and had a smashing beer garden. You could quite easily spend a whole evening here its that nice and you should relish the community atmosphere in the pub.

Local Run Coalville Pub with Nice Food 4*

My Dad's a local lad to Coalville and he really likes this place because its got some good ale for him and surprisingly a good food menu. It got a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. It's also run by several of the locals so it retains something special about it. Overall I really liked it here and I think you will too and I definitely recommend you trying one of the main meals of the lunchtime food menu.

Review of The Monkey Walk

13 Nov 07, 17:30

Good Local Wetherspoons 3*

I was surprised to see a wetherspoons in a small town like coalville and I was surprised to see that it was very busy and popular with both young and old drinkers. There were a few ales on tap but not as many were available as in some city branches. Overall its not a bad pub but its not as lively as some of pubs because of its location in a small countryside town. Probably a good pub if you are a local thou.

Review of The Showroom Bar And Cafe

13 Nov 07, 17:28

Decent enough Place with Wi-Fi 3*

The Showroom on Paternoster Row is another handy little place to go if you have just missed your train. It's a decent city center bar but nothing stands out when you get there. Theres a lot of people with laptops in here when I went so I'm guessing they have free wi-fi which is certainly a bonus as few places still provide this service in their premises. My friend in Sheffield told me its got a late license now on Thursdays to Saturdays so it might be worth your time to visit the bar then as well.

Review of The Rutland Arms

13 Nov 07, 17:27

An Endearing Pub close to the Station 3*

If you like your real ales (like my Dad) this is one of the places to go in Sheffield. The Rutland Arms resides on Brown Street and has a good range of beers. My dad pointed 7 out to me. Its in quite a handy location not too far away from the Railway station so if your train is delayed it might be worth the risk to come here for a quick drink. Overall the pub has some friendly staff and a rather eccentric decor that you will probably find very endearing.

Review of The Hub

13 Nov 07, 17:26

Sheffield Hallam Student Union Bar 3*

This is Sheffield Hallam University's Student Union. Its a nice bar with lots of pool tables for the students too enjoy. Its also got a few TV's in the corners for the sport. Great if you are a student but I felt a bit uncomfortable now that I'm not a student. But that is just me, the atmosphere is lively as you would expect and drinks are cheap so why not give it a try sometime.

Review of The Globe

13 Nov 07, 16:50

Pub with Sticky Floor Sydrome 3*

The Globe on Howard Street is a place I would describe as a chain pub with a friendly atmosphere and full of students. Its also very close to the train station. Expect old furniture, very sticky floors but a great jukebox. If you like pubs with a lively atmosphere then this is the place to go but do expect lots of students. However if a student bar repulses you then go elsewhere in the city.

Review of The Fountain

13 Nov 07, 16:44

Good for Quiet Relaxing Pints 3*

The Fountain on Leopold Street is a pub more for a relaxing pint rather than one of those pubs with a party atmosphere going on. The prices for drinks aren't too bad although not the cheapest in Sheffield by any stretch of the imagination. The interior is spacious with wooden decor and a high roof. I think this pub is more for after work drinks or a quiet pint on a weekday night rather than a place to go on the weekend.

Review of Brown Bear

13 Nov 07, 16:42

Cheap Beer but dingly decor 2*

I think the Brown Bear is one of a handful Samuel Smith pubs still left in Sheffield if not the only one (as I didn't see any others around). The pints started at just £1.33 when I went although this was over a year ago since I last went. But its too dirty and unwelcoming as a pub. I don't think the great value for money for the beer overcomes the shabby interior and quite lackluster atmosphere I found. I can see why there aren't many Sam Smiths around.

Review of The Bankers Draft

13 Nov 07, 16:38

Needs to Improve on a lot of things 2*

Unfortunately the Bankers Draft failed to live up to its reputation. This place is only good thing going for it is the cheap beer. The food service is slower than a snail and I got served by quite a rude member of staff (very blunt). Although I've heard since they have had a refurb and things are a lot better so maybe it is worth a try if you have nothing better to go to but I wont be going there in a hurry.

Review of Yates's

13 Nov 07, 16:30

Well Maintained Yate's at Piccadilly 3*

This isn't your typical Yates pub (like on Portland Street), its actually quite good. Its seems to be a trend now to build pubs in railway stations but it feels like they have made an effort with this one as this isn't the only pub on the concourse. Its a lot friendly and cleaner than other yate's I have been in but unless you like a drink or two before or after traveling then I don't think you are missing too much. But if you have a thirst on, it hits the spot quite well.

Review of Yates's

13 Nov 07, 16:29

Soulless Yate's Chain Pub 1*

An unpleasant Yates chain pub which merely draws out a rather unsavory crowd of people in my opinion. The pub is soulless and has no character. I found the whole drinking experience here rather uncomfortable especially as the day draw on and and endless stream of chav's starting pouring in for a lunchtime drink. Even if you have very little money, try and avoid this place if you can, there are far better pubs to go to in a city as big as Manchester.

Fun Night out at the Scubar 4*

Scubar on York Street promotes a lot of drinks offers so you will find a lot of students taking advantages of these on all days of the week. It makes for a fun and lively atmosphere and the drink offers means your night out here wont be too expensive. It has three levels, with fun to be had on all of them. Its a very nice place and I recommend coming down on a weekend to savor the atmosphere.

Review of Old Monkey

13 Nov 07, 16:26

Great Football Atmosphere Here 4*

The Old Monkey has an interesting mix of people socializing there especially on a weekend although I found the best time to go was when the football was one. Generally most pubs in the center are man city pubs rather than united pubs and the Old Monkey was no exception. When I went to watch the city game they won and the atmosphere was electric afterwards. The beer is cheap which can only add to the fun that can be had here.

Review of O'sheas

13 Nov 07, 16:25

Traditional Irish Pub Good For Watching Sports 3*

O'Shea's on Princess Street is very handy to watch the sport especially watching city or united play which does give it some good atmosphere. However on occasions its got too busy and uncomfortable to watch there because there aren't too many pubs with big screen sports in the city center. If you hadn't realized already its an Irish pub so St.Patrick's Day is often the best and worst night of the year. If you do go, go early or possibly check out one of the live nights there.

Review of Night & Day

13 Nov 07, 16:24

Good Venue to check out Live Bands 3*

Night and Day on Oldham Street is one of the best live venues on Manchester. Places like Night and Day are on every street corner in north London but in Manchester they are a dieing breed. That said the place interior isn't that nice. A little dingy and grotty round the edges mean that most people come here to see bands rather than to drink. The beer is reasonable and the staff are friendly to be around. For all its faults it still worth taking a look to see the next potential big bands.

Review of Jolly Angler

13 Nov 07, 16:23

Traditional Irish Feel but Not for me 2*

A very traditional Irish feel to this pub which often has live music, mostly traditional Irish music playing to keep the punters happy. Its and back street pub and it feels too run down to say its got original features and character about it. Personally I think they need to refurbish this place before its too late to catch up with other pubs in the area. Its definitely got potential but I just felt too uncomfortable there to enjoy what little else is there.

Review of Grey Horse Inn

13 Nov 07, 16:22

Warm, Friendly but very Small Pub 3*

The Grey Horse is a cosy little traditional pub in the heart of the city. Its got a warm and friendly atmosphere and a few good beers on tap apart from the usual commercial beers that are to be found everywhere. When I describe it as a little pub, I mean little but because of the atmosphere you can forgive the pub for its lack of space. Most of the people in the pub are regulars rather than students so if you want to avoid the student pub circuit then stop off here.

Review of Grand Central

13 Nov 07, 16:21

A Pub that prides itself on its Jukebox 3*

The Grand Central appears to be one of those self appointed rock pubs with an extensive collection of music on the jukebox to attract the music lovers of Manchester to them. I found the jukebox a little too niche for my liking, too much pretentious rock and not enough quality punk music but jukebox aside the beer is good and the bar service is excellent. Theres plenty of potential in this pub so hopefully someone will improve the jukebox in the not too distant future.

Review of Font Bars

Nice place to Chill and Relax in Manchester 3*

The Font on Wakefield Street is pretty much an unofficial student bar, not necessarily in decor but in atmosphere. When I came here they have a PS2 in the corner of the bar which was free to play on one of the TV's there. It's not got the best view in Manchester but its a good place to chill out and relax with a few beers. Its a busy bar thou so don't expect quick service but the staff are friendly and very helpful.

Review of Athenaeum & Atticvs

13 Nov 07, 16:14

Artificial Pub with need of some Refurbishing 2*

The Athenaeum sounds a bit unusual for a city center pub but it's a big place and does feel a bit artificial and plastic at times. Nevertheless the drinks are cheap here and I think it has some potential but it needs a little refurbishing. The staff were nice enough but I didn't feel relaxed in here drinking. Maybe worth a pint if you are heading to somewhere else in the area or head to the top of Oxford Road.

Review of Ye Olde White Harte

13 Nov 07, 16:10

Classic Old Pub with Character 3*

Ye Olde White Harte on Silver Street is one of Hull's better pubs. A lovely, big open fire, nice ales very much in the mold of the Olde Black Boy nearby with classic original features and an older more relaxed atmosphere. Its worth dropping in for a drink if you like the older drinking culture but if pool tables, jukeboxes and TV's blaring out sports constantly is your thing then don't waste you time here.

Review of Ye Olde Black Boy

13 Nov 07, 15:29

Nice Classic Pub on the High Street 3*

The Black Boy on Hull High Street is a very popular pub because of its great range of beers and ales. Its also got the classic old interior about it that gives the place character. By this I don't mean its full of Victorian photographs and wooden furniture. Its not a place aimed at young people like me but if you appreciate the more classic drinking culture then this is one of the places to go to head too if you live or are visiting Hull.

Even by Yates wine lodge standards this is a poor effort of an attempt to make a nice pub to want to go too. Poor food service plus bad tasting food is not doing itself any favors in such a competitive area with the likes of wetherspoons around the corner. These are the places that give'chain' pubs a bad name which is a shame as some are of high quality.

Review of Ye Old Blue Bell

13 Nov 07, 15:23

Nice Friendly Samuel Smith Pub 3*

The Ye Old Blue Bell on Market Place in the city center is if I very much mistaken a Samuel Smith pub, so it has quite a selection of ales and beers from around the country. The locals were nice in the Bell and I didn't feel out of place there. But I wouldn't stay for more than a drink as there quite a few places nearby that are just better than the Old Bell but take a look for yourself and discover I refreshing beer.

Review of The Whalebone

13 Nov 07, 15:21

Local Pub in an Industrial area 1*

I hated the Whalebone when I went to it a while back. First of all, it's tucked away in an industrial area and secondly it's very much in the mold of a'locals' pub. I noticed a fairly large selection of beers and ales but I didn't think it had much variety compared to other camra recommended pubs in the area. My opinion is only go to this pub if you are local resident with a thirst for ale.

Review of The Wellington Inn

13 Nov 07, 15:14

Real Ale Pub but not for Young Drinkers 3*

The Wellington Inn on Russell Street is another real ale pub to be found in Hull and one heavily recommended by the Campaign For Real Ales. Expect an old decor and a very wide selection of real ales but this wasn't enough for me so I didn't stop for long as its very popular with the older crowd. I can't fault its friendliness by staff and their quick service but it offers nothing for a young drinker in the city.

Review of The Old English Gentleman

13 Nov 07, 15:11

Pub for Theater Goers 3*

The Old English Gentlemen on Mason Street is just outside the city center of Hull. It does however have some attractive features and an extremely comfortable place in which to enjoy a quiet pint. Its nestled behind the Hull New Theater so it really only attracts a theater crowd but if you are in the area and want a drink I would take a chance again and stop by for a quick drink.

Review of Hole In The Wall

13 Nov 07, 15:09

Too small a bar to take seriously 2*

The Hole in the Wall is exactly what is says on the tin. It's as small as a hole in a wall but its a decent enough friendly local pub. I've been once and found it to have a very friendly atmosphere but there is nothing else going on for it. Its actually a long narrow shop conversion with a comfortable front bar and pool table at the back. I think it's best sampled when you are on the way to somewhere else such as the Lamp or the Old Zoological.

Review of The Benbow

13 Nov 07, 14:59

Poor Local Pub with Huge Car Park 1*

The Benbow on the border between Wheatley Hills and Intake is a big pub near the local playing fields. Personally I think the only redeeming quality for this pub is its very large car park which unsurprisingly is under used because its a dark, dingy interior. I haven't been here for quite a while so things may have turned for the better but I'd only come here if I was really thirsty or really curious to see the new refurbishment. At the moment I'm in neither mood.

Review of Edwards

13 Nov 07, 14:57

I'm disappointed it's still open 1*

I had heard through a friend that Edwards Bar on Hallgate in the center of town had closed down. But much to my disappointment it is still open and still attracting a young crowd last Christmas. If you like very noisy pubs and unwelcoming door staff then definitely come here along with the Goose around the corner. Personally I think there are better places to go in Doncaster so I won't waste one more second thinking of the place.

Review of Berlins

13 Nov 07, 14:54

Very Large Underground Bar 3*

Here is a useless fact for you. It used to be the entrance to the Laser Quest before it got turned into a bar. But this should give you an indication into the size of the place for an underground bar. It's a very popular bar on the town circuit. Its cheap drinks with a lively atmosphere with a lot of offers on the weekend to entice people in works a treat. As a result it attracts chavs like a blue light to a fly but if you like that hussle and bussle of a place then its just about worth a visit here.

Review of The Ringside

13 Nov 07, 14:52

A Pub with Something for Everyone 4*

I stumbled upon The Ringside looking for a quick pint. I ended up finding a pub with something for everyone. A big screen for the sports, a big bar, a function room and a variety of rock, karaoke and quiz nights throughout the week. Definitely worth taking a trip down to especially for the pub quiz. I think this is a super pub which I look forward to going again soon.

Review of Coach & Horses

13 Nov 07, 14:48

Formerly good pub now gone to commerical 2*

I used to drink at the Coach and Horses a lot when I was younger because it has a bit of character about it. It then got a DJ in most nights and it got really busy which for a small poky pub is a bad thing. So they took half the seating out so people could stand around and mingle better. Because of this, its lost an edge of being a relaxed pub in a lively area of town. The only redeeming feature now is the cheap shots but its not enough to make me want to go then again in a hurry.

Review of The Goose

13 Nov 07, 14:46

Way Too Loud to Socialise in 1*

I hate the Goose and for a fan of chain pubs (that are good) I'm disappointed to have to say this places is rubbish. If you like pubs playing really loud music so you cant hear your friends chatting to you then come here. If you like to hear yourself think then go somewhere else. It wasn't impressed at all so I wouldn't recommended going. Whats worse than this is the unfriendly and quite blunt door staff which I hope the management replace very soon.

Comfy Trendy Bar with Good Music 4*

Initially I had reservations about this bar, it seems too pretentious and too expensive but I gave the place a second chance when it was a lot busier and I found it too be very good. Good music (thats not too loud), nice comfy sofas and a quick bar service. But its still quite expensive with few drink offers so probably not someone you would want to stay all night unless you can afford it.

Review of The Tut 'n' Shive

13 Nov 07, 14:42

One of My Favourite Pubs in Doncaster 5*

The Tut and Shive is one of my favourite Pubs in Doncaster. Great Jukebox but a very small pub, so it has a distinct lack of seating, but it attracts a young and lively crowd and a very quick bar service. My only grumble with this pub is the small and dirty toilets with some kind of old British Rail look to them. I've spent many a night here and will no doubt do so in the future. Theres a pub quiz on Sundays that I recommend you come too and if you like big screen sports come here.

Review of The Salutation

13 Nov 07, 14:40

One of the Best Pubs in Doncaster 5*

For me The Salutation is one of the best pubs in Doncaster along with the Tut and Shive. It is a small pub, but its got a lot of drinks available including ales, a weekly pub quiz as well as an obligatory quiz machine in the corner, friendly staff and a good atmosphere. I think its great value for money but try and get there early on a weekend to get a seat as theres not much room to stand.

Review of Plough Inn

13 Nov 07, 14:39

Nice Friendly Local Pub in Town Centre 3*

I much prefer next doors pub, The Tut n Shive but credit where credits due this has been described as the perfect locals' pub; friendly, welcoming, warm if the door to the gents' isn't open! It lacks the atmosphere for me but I can see why people like it. It has more seating than the Tut n Shive but its just a little too far off the main drag of the pub circuit to make it worth while going regularly.

Review of The Leopard

13 Nov 07, 14:34

Good for Live Bands but Nothing Else 2*

The Leopard on West Street is well off the beaten track in terms of the doncaster pub crawl. I don't think theres much going on here although they are one of the only few venues left in the town that can accommodate good live music. That said unless you were going to see a band there, I wouldn't go. Its got an old dirty decor to it and not much of a young atmosphere going on.

Airport Lounge Interior with Cheap Drinks 3*

There is nothing special about this Wetherspoons, but for some reason I really like it here. The interior reminds me of a 1970's airport lounge but it has plenty of seating and a good atmosphere on a weekend. I once even saw a queue outside of people trying to get in! So it appears I'm not alone in thinking that its a good place to drink, but then again its in Doncaster!

Review of White Bear

Town Centre Pub thats Slowly Got Worse 2*

I used to come here a lot on a Monday for the karaoke with my friend Rob but then they decided to refit it and have an 80's theme bar upstairs and install 4 pole dancers by the door for the girls to dance around on a weekend. It looks cheap and tacky now so I don't go there but it has cheap drinks and its right in the heart of the action on a weekend so I might be worth a try if theres queues outside other pubs.

Review of The Walkabout

13 Nov 07, 14:27

Surprisingly Good for a Theme Chain Bar 4*

I can see why people like the place, its one of the biggest places around, drinks are quite cheap, theres lots of seating and it even has TV's in the toilet. It feels like a place that always has something going on. Its also got a stage for live bands which is very unique for Doncaster and a late night license so I can avoid going to the nightclub after the pubs shut. Even thought its a chain pub, I really like it.

Review of The Whittington & Cat

13 Nov 07, 14:26

A Local Pub for Local People 2*

I'm not a big fan of the Whittington and Cat on Commercial Road. Firstly its got too long name and secondly its on Commercial Road. It has decent beer with quite a few ales but no real choice of drinks. It has a few bits and bobs like a pool table inside to give it some edge but i felt really unwelcome there. This is just one of those'local' pubs that cities like Hull have so its best to avoid this place altogether.

Review of Minerva Hotel

13 Nov 07, 14:23

Vibarant Twenty Something Bar 4*

The Minerva Hotel on Nelson Street is a very popular destination for non-students living in hull. The beer is very good which compliments the food menu very well. Its got a friendly atmosphere, its clean, has friendly staff and lots of little places to hide away from the rest of the pub if you like your privacy. I can't really fault this place although it still misses that something special like the Lamp on Norfolk Street or The Sailmakers Arms.

Review of The Hogshead

13 Nov 07, 14:08

Nice Burgers in a Good'Chain' Pub 3*

For some reason the Hogshead on Whitefriar Gate attracts a lot of people, I can't really tell the difference between this place and the local wetherspoons. Maybe one reason is because everyone here is under the age of 30 whilst many other chain pubs attracts older customers as well (especially wetherspoons). The food is good, particularly the Cheese and Bacon Burger. When I went last time they had changed the menu again so they may have some cracking new burgers on offer.

Review of Rugby Tavern

13 Nov 07, 14:04

Old Pub Steeped in History 3*

I have only been to the Rugby Tavern once on the recommendation of one of my old lecturers at University. It's supposedly a legendary old pub where the North Sea Whalers used to head to when they came back to shore. It retains a certain history to it without being cheap and crass like some other pubs I know. Theres also a casino just down the road (Napoleons) so you get a few people heading too, or coming back from there in here.

Review of The Sailmakers Arms

13 Nov 07, 14:02

Fantastic Pub with lots of Character 5*

I really like this place. Its got a lot of character. When you walk up to the pub you enter via a large courtyard which had tubes running a long the top of the wall. This is because they have ferrets living in the pub that wander around the tubes in the courtyard for some fresh air! When you walk in, its clean, bright, warm and friendly. Its not a big pub so service is quick, but surprisingly it has a large selection of drinks. Its a bit off the city pub crawl routes but its well worth taking a detour to fit it in.

Review of Green Bricks

Lazy Sunday Afternoon Pub 3*

The Green Bricks is near one of the old docks close to the shopping center. I was told that this is one a few real ale pubs around the area, however when I went they weren't selling any due to cleaning of the pipes. There is a large selection of drinks here thou and I would recommend coming here on a lazy Sunday afternoon after a pub lunch somewhere else. The relaxed quiet atmosphere coupled with that'old man' feel actually made me enjoy the place quite a lot.

Review of The Empress

13 Nov 07, 13:56

Below Average City Centre Pub 2*

Me and my friends popped into The Empress whilst on the way to the wetherspoons, also on Alfred Gelder Street. It was on a whim due to be overly impressed by its frontage. However its just your typical average city pub. A busy atmosphere on a weekend but not worth hanging around for longer than a drink as there's nothing much going on in here in terms of music or games like a pool table.

Review of Durty Nelly's

13 Nov 07, 13:54

Traditional Irish Pub aimed at Young Crowd 3*

Durty Nelly's by the name alone has all the hallmarks for an Irish pub aimed at cashing in on the student market. So understandably this place had a bit of a following for obvious reasons. As it's an Irish pub it plays live Irish music on a Friday and Saturday. When there isn't live music theres a jukebox full of Irish music. Theres also a giant Jenga and table football to keep the younger customers happy. It has a good atmosphere here but I personally wouldn't go here to often as there is a distinct lack of variety here.

Review of The Bonny Boat

13 Nov 07, 13:45

Local Mansfield Bitter Pub in City 2*

The Bonny Boat on Trinity House Lane is more your'local' pub although it does have a friendly atmosphere. I believe it's a Mansfield Pub, so if you like your local beer and ales then this is the place to come too. It is small for a local but it was also rather clean although it can be a bit dingy in a few corners. It serves its purpose in the community which is for the older drinkers that surround the city. If you are young then there is nothing cater here for you so best to avoid.

Review of Goose & Granite

13 Nov 07, 13:37

Huge but devoid of Atmosphere 2*

My friend described the Goose and Granite as a'Huge Barn of a place, seemingly devoid of atmosphere and ambiance'. I have to agree with him on this. Its just your usually pub chain bar in the middle of a city center. I have met my friend here at lunchtime once or twice and the food was quickly served and good value for money. However there is nothing special about this place and I wouldn't purposefully set out to come here in an evening.

Review of Admiral Of The Humber

13 Nov 07, 13:33

Unappealing Wetherspoons 3*

The Admiral of the Humber is a fairly typical Wetherspoon's in a city. Built on the ground floor of an office block. But although it doesn't look great inside or outside, its very popular so it has atmosphere specially on a weekend. Curry Club on a Thursday is very popular here so if you go then, I advise you to go as a early as possible after work. The same applies for the Sunday Roasts especially the Beef dish. Go here on a city pub crawl to get the best out of it.

Review of The Piper

13 Nov 07, 12:58

Good Student Nightclub on Newland Avenue 3*

The piper is a pub/club half way up Newland Avenue. Its only worth going to on a student night which is usually on a Monday night. Its a nice venue but when its gets busy it can take an age to get served. Its also really hot inside and they force use to use a cloakroom if you have a coat with you. The drinks are cheap if you get a membership card but expect the queue on a student night due to its popularity. I've been here many times but most of the nights have merged into one due to the lack of variety at the place.

Review of The Lamp

13 Nov 07, 12:44

Fantastic Bar near City Centre 5*

The Lamp on Norfolk Street is one of my favourite bars in Hull. Its basically a detached house just off the busy crossroad outside the city center boundary. Its got a very arty feel to it inside, very much the place that would have comfy sofas with old church pews for seating scattered about. In the back of the bar there are several pool tables which are quite cheap to play. They also do reasonably priced beer pitchers but what really sets this bar apart is the lively atmosphere this place has making it a great place to drink.

Large Might Nice Pub outside of University 3*

This is one of several Mighty Nice Chain pubs in Hull. This one is opposite the main entrance to Hull University so its very popular with the students. Ive spent many a lunchtime here and I cant think of a bad time I had here. Review of Circus Circus

13 Nov 07, 12:41

Student Bar with Cheap Drinks Offers 3*

Circus Circus is basically a student bar opened as a pre-club warm up bar on a weekday and a late night bar on the weekends. Inside's interior is interesting, the more striking piece are the dodgems cars hanging off the roof. They have sacrificed a lot of seating to accommodate as many people as they can. Theres plenty of drinks offers and when the student crowd turn up has a good atmosphere. Personally I would exploit the cheap drinks and leave rather than hang around for a bit and have a chat as you can do that better somewhere else.

Review of Duke Of Cumberland

13 Nov 07, 12:39

Middle of the Road Village Pub 3*

The Duke of Cumberland is another local pub in the village center. It's not as intimidating an atmosphere as the Tiger but it doesn't have the warm friendly atmosphere of the Cross Keys. It merely nestles in between the two which means it has its good points; plenty of seating, good beers, and its bad points; no drinks offers. I think its worth coming here if you fancy a change from the student friendly pubs in Cottingham but it will never be everything special.

Review of Gardeners Arms

13 Nov 07, 12:38

Superb Pub especially In Summer 5*

The Gardeners is one of only a handful of pubs I can think with an outside beer garden on the front. It also overlooks one of the busiest roads in Hull but this is insignificant especially in the summertime when pretty much everyone student in the are descends on the place. Its actually got two parts to it inside. The main entrance leads to a small bar where the old features dominate the interior. If you go round the side there is another entrance that leads to a new bit built on. Here you will find loads of pool tables, video jukebox and quiz machines plus a few drink offers. This is a great pub day or night, rain or shine.

Review of Grafton Hotel

13 Nov 07, 12:37

Run down Pub off Newland Avenue 2*

I'm told the Grafton is owned by the lead singer of the beautiful south but if it is true then I think they need to spend more money on the interior. Its an old pub in the middle of a residential street, but I found it a bit too smelly and dingy inside. Grafton street's residents are pretty much all students and many of them flock to this pub so it gives it a lively feel to the place but its not enough to compensate the run down feel of the place.

Review of Hogshead

13 Nov 07, 12:34

Very Good Hogshead Pub 4*

The hogshead is built next door to the local wetherspoons which it heavily competes against to get the locals in. It uses the same methods as them of cheap drinks and a reliable food menu but it loses out much of the time apart from the weekend. I really like this branch of hogshead, its got a big airy interior which is clean and modern. They have pool tables in either corner and big screens for the sport. Another good thing is the front patio which is good in the summer and very popular for sitting and watching the world go by. I've never had a bad time there and I'm sure you wont either.

Review of Old Zoological

13 Nov 07, 12:31

Mighty Nice Chain Pub on Princes Avenue 4*

The Old Zoo resides at the bottom of Princess Avenue and is one of several Mighty Nice pubs in Hull. It doesn't differentiate itself from the other might nice pubs in the area. The interior is light colors complimented with wood features and the food menu is comprehensive, value for money and very filling. I did however think the bar staff were a little slower than expected and the toilets were quite small for such a large venue. But if you are looking for somewhere to relax with no surprises then the Old Zoological is a good choice.

Review of Railway Hotel

13 Nov 07, 12:29

Nice Student Pub in Village 4*

There are two student campuses in Cottingham, the Railway is closest the second campus (and smaller one) so pretty much everyone in there is a student. This gives it a really lively atmosphere, the staff are friendly and helpful and drinks are understandably cheap. Its also the closest pub to Cottingham railway station (hence the name) so some people often go to the pub before catching the train into the city at night. This is a great pub to go to for a drink or for a whole night.

Pub Thats Opens it Arms Out to Students 4*

Head north outside the main village thoroughfare and you will find one of the only few friendly pubs in Cottingham. I found most of the other pubs in the village for locals only, however the Cross Keys were very happy to have Students come and drink there. As a result the atmosphere was lively, drinks was good with plenty of offers and more importantly they had a big screen for the sports.

Review of Hallgate Tavern

13 Nov 07, 11:44

One of the better friendly Pubs in Cottingham 4*

I really liked the Hallgate Tavern, it still retains much of its original features and there is a mix of locals and students without suffering in atmosphere. A lot of the pubs in Cottingham suffer when students and locals merge together. I remembered they had pints from £1.50 which were pretty good but they also had quite a lot of other drinks to cater for the students. The best time for me to go was on the weekend when you don't fancy a big night out but don't want a quiet pint either.

Review of Fair Maid

Super Food and Super Facilities 5*

Probably the best pub in Cottingham, it big, the food menu is a lot better than many other places although it is pricey but you get a fair sized portion. They used to have free refillable coke so the students used to take advantage of this offer all the time. It also has a beer garden, a big screen for sports, a poor table and quiz machine and a hidden mens toilet that you find by pushing a bookshelf.

Much Friendly Pub Now Its a Wetherspoons 4*

Wetherspoon's bought this pub out a few years ago because its right on the doorstep of the market which is perfect for passing trade. As a result the pub is very busy all the time including at night, has some classic old features and has a mix of youth with the usual older crowd. I liked it here but its very close to the other wetherspoons (newly built). Probably best for the a more relaxed atmosphere as its just off the pub circuit.

Review of Number Fifteen

13 Nov 07, 11:00

Restaurant and Bar in Town Centre 3*

I've stopped at Number Fifteen a few times for lunch to meet friends and they have all been good occasions. The price of the food menu was a bit high for the portions of food you get but the service is quick and the place seems neat and tidy. Its also a bar at night and I've been here for a quick drink during town center pub crawls. The drinks were a bit pricey (a bit like the food) compared to other places but they did have a better wine selection than a lot of other bars around.
