Review of Oxfam

29 Apr 08, 16:46

Great jewellery - thoughtful gifts 5*

I love Oxfam and I try and support their local shops as much as possible. I bought nearly all my Christmas presents in here because they're fairtrade. Although this one in Buckingham isn't great for clothes, it always has a great range of books in, along with tea, coffee and loads of other fairtrade products. I got some gorgeous older hard back books you would have paid five times more if they were new. The jewellery in Oxfam is so beautiful and all the money goes directly to the producers. Oxfam is currently providing water, sanitation and livelihood opportunities to more than half a million people in Darfur and Chad! You never ever feel guilty for spending too much money because it goes to such a great cause. Also, if you're stuck for presents, they have these vouchers you can buy that for example say "£24 for an animal aid kit" so you then know that money is going to help farmer's animals in third world countries. Or if you're feeling really generous you can literally "lift a farming family out of poverty" for £1,600! There's a huge selection of these directly infront of you as you walk into Oxfam in Buckingham. You can see them all on their website too www.oxfam.org.uk/shop.

Review of Three Cups

For the oldies 2*

This seems to be a bit of an old man's pub... it's either full of old people or 18 year olds. I've only been in a couple of times but I wouldn't recommend this place for a drink - there are a lot of much nicer places to go in Buckingham...

Review of Swan Pool & Leisure Centre

Small gym - great pool 3*

I've been to some fitness classes here which were a real laugh, definitely worth checking out. The pool is large and there's a child's pool too so you can relax a bit more when you're with them as it's really shallow. The only slight downside is everyone can watch you and you feel a bit like you're in a goldfish bowl, but who cares, just work it! They also have a sauna and steam room so you can relax after a swim. Good price and really good for Buckingham generally. Gym is small though!

Review of Homeflair Gift Shop

Beautiful jewellery 5*

This is one of those shops you can't walk past and not go in... they sell gorgeous jewellery which isn't stupidly expensive at all. They also wrap it for you if it's a gift. If you're after cards or gifts for young children, this place is ideal. A hidden treasure in Buckingham - go look!

Review of The Mitre

Nice during the day 3*

I've been going to this pub for years. It's quite tucked away and really sweet and cosy inside, well I think so anyway... it's small but it's really nice for a quiet drink. I don't think I'd choose it for a Friday/Saturday evening drink though, tends to be full of really young, quite annoying people who wear lots of black....

One of life's great mysteries 1*

If you're male and WELL over 50... you'll probably love this pub. I always look in and wonder why people are drinking in there when there are so many other nice pubs around! I'm not a huge fan as it's really dated and a bit grim inside but if you want to sit in the window watching the world go by stroking your beard, this is the pub of your dreams...

Review of Almarie's

Great food - lovely decor 4*

My friend used to own this restaurant and it's really popular in Buckingham. It recently changed hands but it seems to have been kept pretty much the same... same food etc. The service previously was second to none as the owners, Alex and Annmarie, were SO friendly and ran it fantastically but I went in for the first time the other day and it's still a great place to go. I know the previous owners asked people to leave pushchairs outside as it got busy and quite cramped, unfortunately that rule seems to have been discarded so it's a bit of a maze getting to a table at times! But it's still one of the best places for lunch in Buckingham. Plus, they're now open on Sundays 9-2pm (woo!) so you can go 7 days a week

Great food - lovely staff 5*

The staff here are SO friendly and make you feel so welcome. Plus they always give the ladies a flower when they leave which I think is lovely. The indian food is great and they also deliver. Prices are good too. Definitely try it. Doesn't look great from the outside, but you'll love it. Loads of my friends have had birthdays in here and had huge groups there and they never fail to impress

Great for Cruelty Free makeup 5*

If you want a local health food shop, this is your place. REALLY helpful staff who are always happy to answer questions and best of all, they sell the whole Cruelty Free makeup range which is all natural and not tested on animals!

Review of White Hart Hotel

Gone SO down hill... 1*

I used to go in here LOADS but now it has a pretty bad reputation in Buckingham. Friday and Saturday nights are carnage and really grim. It's quite a rough pub now and although the beer garden is nice in the summer, it's spoilt quite a lot by the people who go there. I saw a woman rip her top off to flash at the bouncer as she stood gyrating on the table... the worst thing was he just laughed. Hmmm. Classy bird. They need to sort out the decoration. Food is REALLY bad too - straight out of the freezer but really expensive. I would definitely suggest you keep well away.

Review of The Woolpack

Dog friendly and great in summer 4*

This is the BEST place to go in the summer because the garden backs onto the river and there are loads of places to sit. It's really nice in winter as they have the fires on and it's really cosy and then in the summer it's great for relaxing in. They are dog friendly in the garden too (and they used to let them inside too, not sure if they still do though) so really nice place to take them. Food is a bit hit and miss... sometimes it's REALLY great and other times the portions are really small. But I would recommend it for lunch definitely. They got REALLY badly flooded and were closed for ages but since the refurb, it's even nicer inside.

Review of Jilly Sanders

Best for posh dresses 4*

This is such a great shop - it is quite pricey but if you're looking for a proper posh dress it's not much more expensive than somewhere like monsoon. It's a bit more quirky and individual too so if you're looking for a posh gown, I highly recommend this place. You also know you're not going to show up somewhere in the same dress as someone else because they only seem to have one of each style. I got a STUNNING black dress from there for £90 and seeing as I've worn it about 5 times already it was worth every penny. Amazing accessories too.

Review of Prego

19 Apr 08, 11:59

Not the place to be.... 2*

Prego used to be lovely, and it still is... if you're willing to wait around 2 hours for your meal. There are always too many customers and not enough staff. It's such a shame because the food is gorgeous and it's so nice inside (they've also got a courtyard for the summer). They really need to restructure their staff and then it'd be great
