Review of Merkaba

Very Sex and the City...Carrie and co. would be proud!
Hallelujah. We now have a lounge bar in Brighton that is nothing but pure class. Oh, except if you don't mind drinking your 6.50 Bloody Mary out of a glass tankard and then being looked at like you've lost the plot if you ask for your glass to be changed. Or if you don't mind drinking a 7quid mojito out of a cocktail shaker. I totally see what they're trying to do, but stick with the classic cocktails and leave the creativity to the surroundings of this brand new bar. It's set inside the brand new myhotel on Jubilee Street, and despite the mixed service I got a couple of weeks ago I will definitely give it a go again for the glamour factor alone.

Review of Wembley Arena
29 May 08, 22:48
Not all that I was hoping it'd be...
I was lucky enough to see the musical legend that is George Michael here last Summer, and he was amazing, just like his song. What let the show down was the awful sound system which didn't project around the stadium well enough to justify the artist. I was also really irritated by the fact that it's on the wrong side of London for me, and therefore really difficult to get back from late on a Sunday evening. I'm guessing that coming here for footie would be awesome, but for gigs I wouldn't bother going again.

Review of British Airways London Eye
29 May 08, 22:45
I had high hopes for the London eye
I had high hopes for the London eye (no pun intended, honest). Yet I was expecting to be slightly more thrilled by being a paying customer on one of London's hottest attractions. There is only so much enjoyment you can get from this structure on a cloudy day, so my advice is: if you want a ferris wheel, go to a fun fair and if you want to see London from a great height then do it from the London Eye on a clear, sunny day.

Review of Eaton Road Dental Practice
29 May 08, 19:22
Insist on having the door closed!
I'm still deciding if I like this dental practice or not. Based on my experiences of being rather scared of any dental work, I joined this practice in January. When I arrived I was able to watch and hear the person's treatment sitting in the dreaded (for some) chair in the treatment room. I asked to have the door shut when I went in, to save not only my own dignity from screaming like a three year old child before the dentist even started looking, but also because it's quite an odd thing to have people in the waiting room, which is right next to the only treatment room in the practice, being able to experience your pain along with you. However, the work I've had has been reasonable. The building's actually quite quaint, and like a wooden lodge at centre parcs. Just opposite the Cricket Club in Hove too so a nice leafy surroundings whilst you have a lovey root canal.

Review of Paperchase
29 May 08, 19:11
Not the biggest, and not fabulous service either
This is not the biggest Paperchase. And it's certainly not the most professional. I managed to spend about 3 minutes waiting for the staff to finish moaning about their manager and debating when they should go on their break before they served me. Although that said, I liked the fact you can buy decent cards and stationary on route to wherever you're heading rather than having to put up with the usual dusty rotating display stand of cards at most station's newsagents.

Review of London Luton Airport
29 May 08, 18:49
Don't go on an empty stomach..
Is it really too much to ask to be able to buy a half decent meal at an airport when you've finished work for the day and are about to fly off? Or to want to draw some cash out to exchange into Euros? Apparently so at Luton Airport. It's so under-equipped for cash-rich holiday makers who may want to get some sustinance at 7:30pm at night once they've gone through check-in. Come on Luton, get a nice few eateries in there, or atleast with the ones you do have, keep them open during dinner time!

Review of Freemasons Tavern

Is it me or is the music in here really, really, really loud?
Is it me or is the music in here really, really, really loud? I've been to this bar on many occasion, often in a biggish group of people, which has generally always been a mistake as you just can't hear a word anyone says. Yes. I'm old. I think if they turned the music down and played a better variety of music then it may get a better mix of people who can actually stay here and enjoy it rather than do a quick drink and move on.

Review of Carluccios

perhaps it's just me that's fussy then!
I haven't actually ever had a 100% good experience here. The restuarant inside is really buzzy, the delicatessen sells the most wonderful fresh almost doughnut-like focaccia. Unfortunately I ate on a Sunday night here last summer and had to send my meal back three times. The other diners I was with all had a great meal though so perhaps it's just me that's fussy then!

Review of Pasha Bar & Restaurant
30 Apr 08, 14:00
good if you're into funky electro
I went to this bar quite some time ago. It was pretty empty, the music was really loud and it wasn't really my cup of tea. However I can imagine it gets much busier during the evening and it's probably good if you're into funky electro music which was what was blaring out of the speakers.

Review of Sevendials Restaurant

They have a great private dining space
I think this space is great here and the first time I visited was during a hen do last winter. They have a great private dining space underneath the main restuarant, where guests are treated with 5* service and can enjoy a wonderful set menu in their own private space. The second time I visited was for a special dinner, however I wasn't overly impressed with value for money. It was quite pricey, but I didn't particularly enjoy my main, my vegetables were swimming in butter and the ambience wasn't that fantastic in the open space. It's a shame as it's been really nicely designed, I just think it's trying to be something it's not....it could be a bit less stuffy in the main dining area and a bit less formal perhaps.

Review of Hotel Pelirocco
30 Apr 08, 13:46
Great bar...shame about the rooms
I booked the red room at the Hotel Pelirocco for a special occasion last November. I'd heard great things about Brighton's "original boutique hotel", and chose the room which best fitted my budget and tastes - some are uber quirky. The concept is great with lots of different themes to choose from. Unfortunately, when we stayed our room was FREEZING cold, dusty, dark AND the bathroom was so badly decorated, and in fact, it was a really badly partitioned cupboard squeezed into the room. The painting finish was really bad and it just looked like they'd got someone's dad to decorate it without any concern for attention to detail. Had the hype and website not been all about the "luxury" then I wouldn't have minded so much, but the price was equally as luxurious so I was disappointed. The bar however is really, really cool...so long as you don't mind sitting on faux pink leather (PVC don't you know!). With the wonderful Drakes so close by come on HP, you can do better than this!

Review of Ocean Rooms

hope they've sorted out the heating
Apparently this club's had a re-fit, which I've not yet actually seen, however after they sold their Banksy artwork which adorned the bar they should've had enough money to deck it out in gold leaf on every wall. The last time I visited which was at the beginning of the year, the club was SO cold that I had to leave. Let's hope they've sorted out the heating.

Review of Sejuice

not suduced by sejuice
Love the name. Love the branding. Loved watching it on Risking it All. Just unfortunately didn't love the juices that much. I guess they're doing better than Fruit Fix which I noticed has now closed down "until further notice".

Review of Boots The Chemists
21 Apr 08, 18:02
smaller than expected
somehow you seem to think that because Boots is such an established brand that they'd be able to control their image. But of course, good old Boots on St James's street struggles on this front. It's pretty small and hectic in here so I'd try to go to North Street if you can get down there instead.

Review of Real Eating Co
18 Apr 08, 17:07
Over promised, under-delivered
I had high hopes for this well-recommended eaterie. Unfortunately I felt it was over promised and under-delivered. It wants to be a wine bar bistro looking at their amazingly extensive wine list. But their choice of beers were really limited and sometimes that's all you want at brunchtime. For the price we paid the quality of the food on the plate didn't match it.

Review of Pool Valley Coach Station
18 Apr 08, 14:01
The end of the road...
This turning circle of a car park is where the National Express London to Brighton coach ends up. It always signified coming home for me. It's a shame that visitors to Brighton on the coach aren't greeted with something either quirkier or more modern. The current architecture of this space is just dull, dull, dull. And we know Brighton's got SO much more to offer than that.

Review of Hedonizm Records
17 Apr 08, 17:39
great selection...shame about the staff
I didn't have a good experience in here at all. I was buying a really good cd for a friends birthday present, which was obviously way too uncool for the counter staff, however, money's money and who cares if I'm not buying the coolest tunes in the shop. At least I'm buying! So, be warned, the staff are really pretentious in here.

Review of Somerfield
17 Apr 08, 13:44
Somerfield
You don't really expect too much from your supermarket, however you do expect to not have to queue behind a mile of people whenever you want to buy a pint of milk. Unfortunately this store has serious issues in getting their customers through their checkouts so it's a store to avoid if you're in a hurry.

Review of Jones Bootmakers

scary in the sale
Nice shoes, but boy is this place scary in the sale. They don't even attempt to make it any enjoyable shopping experience during this time; their bags are great quality though and last for a good couple of years.

Review of Digital

Got off to a good start...
The former Zap got off to a good start. We were promised a really diverse range of music and high calibre artists. The line ups looked promising and I eagerly watched the much needed renovation take place during my weekly runs along the seafront. Ame - one of the world's greatest DJ's, Ian Brown and Grace Jones started to put the boot into Brighton's sad club scene. But all hope has sadly gone. Back have come the one dimensional Hat Club, Pussycat Club and Gorgeous playing bandwagon funky electro. Come on Brighton, you can be more innovative than that.

Review of Woodies

Sale stock shock!
Now I may be wrong, but with all the competition in the North Laines, especially for high-end menswear, wouldn't you want to rotate your stock a bit better than just taking the sale price of last year's stock and putting it back full price? Slightly unethical, but I guess who's going to know?

Review of TK Max
16 Apr 08, 20:10
Not worth the rummage
If you're a clothes magpie like me, then you don't really mind a good root around the bottom of a bargain bin for that little treasure. Unfortunately, this TK Maxx is just not worth the rummage. The Worthing branch is generally more fruitul.

Review of Primark
16 Apr 08, 18:50
Want a migraine? Spend half an hour in Primarche!
Want a migraine? Spend half an hour in Primarche! Garaunteed to give you emotional meltdown at any time of day. But if you really want a mental breakdown then go on a Saturday. You will be, within minutes, surrounded by thousands of women all desperately trying to a) access the changing rooms and b) attempting to untangle hangers of items they want to buy. There has to be something good about Primark, but if we're going on cost per wear, I generally wear the impulse items no more than once before they hit the bin or the hand-me-down bag.

Review of Topshop
16 Apr 08, 18:37
Not the best stocked topshop
Not the best stocked topshop...I'm always just a bit disappointed when I go in as I'm generally looking for something a bit quirky or edgy. I know that ToSho's capable of merchandising these kind of clothes, but the Brighton supply seems to cater more for students. Or maybe I'm just getting old.

Review of Dragons Health Club
16 Apr 08, 18:26
I really want to like this gym...
I really want to like this gym...but it's really hard to. The people are friendly enough, but I just haven't connected with it. The radio's never loud enough in the changing room, so I can't hear Southern FM's Danny and Nicky in the Morning loud enough after I've had my workout and I'm getting showered, which is always frustrating as it's my favourite breakfast show! But that's not the only reason - it just feels like it needs a bit of customer love. Remove the sardine-packed spinning bikes from the studio so you don't have to be splattered by the bloke sweating profusely next to you. Clean the mirrors in the treadmill room a bit better please, and get more parking. Please.

Review of Woodies Longboard Diner
16 Apr 08, 17:57
Great before midday
Breakfasts are the way forward at Woodies. I have fond memories of a first date over breakfast here (I'm glad to say with my current boyfriend - now fiance!), so that may have influenced how good the food tasted at the time. I have been back on several occasions and tried to enjoy the lunch menu, but I would recommend just sticking to it before midday and you won't go wrong. Fantastic kitsch waitresses and decor, v. 50's.

Review of The Station
16 Apr 08, 14:32
Lots of potential...
But it just doesn't maximise on it. Just because a pub's next to the station, it doesn't mean that everyone will drink in it. Just the people who get off the long commute back from London who are dying for a beer. It's a shame as there's not many drinking establishments close by, but come on, give it a bit more atmosphere and step up your game to give Hove Station a pub to be proud of!
