Review of Browns
30 May 08, 13:00
I LOVE it in here
This Browns is truly the most luxurious branch you're going to find in the UK, in my humble opinion. The space inside is really collonial, and the environment is just the tip of the good points. The service in here is second to none, and the breakfasts are just so tasty that when we stayed in Leeds we visited every day as it was just so good.

a buzzy bar
Mojos is somewhere that my Leeds buddies always take me. It's generally rammed, so get there early but the music's always really good and the atmosphere's always really buzzy.

Review of Eastbourne Pier
30 May 08, 12:39
a great place to take friends when visiting Eastbourne
Nothing can compete with the many memories I have as a drunken teenager spent at the "Odyssey" nightclub on the Pier here. However, despite the fact that the Odyssey is now long gone, along with my teenage drinking, it still has a a night club at the end of it and is still a great place to take friends when visiting Eastbourne.

Fabulous men's shorts
I never usually have my fashion itch properly scratched when I've been to this particular branch. Compared to Oxford Street the range down here is just never as satisfying or broad. I do like the fact that it's a Spanish brand and they have lots of Spanish staff, which somehow adds to the nice European feel of the store. I have to say that they do fabulous men's shorts (well, this season anyway), which aren't necessarily the camo-combat style that seems to be the only style that men can usually buy.

Review of Monsoon
29 May 08, 18:57
a monsoon of shoppers
The Monsoon range is wonderfully colourful and great for weddings or special occassions. However, be prepared that the Brighton store is generally a monsoon of shoppers all crammed in trying to pay/try on/look at the stock. Don't go in a rush, especially in sale season, as there ain't no way you'll want to attempt to have a "quick mooch" as it just isn't happening.

Review of Wagamama
29 May 08, 18:52
a nice vibe restaurant
Oooh yummy. If you want a good meal out in a nice vibe restaurant and don't mind the canteen style dining the Wagamamas in Brighton wins every time. The food is always fresh and tasty, although weirdly they don't serve spirits at all so no chance of a nice VLS to accompany your food.

the best fying experience after Heathrow
I can honestly say that Gatwick is the best fying experience after Heathrow in the UK. If you live in Brighton or Hove you are absolutely sorted for getting to and from anytime of night or day thanks to the 24 hour Gatwick Express.

Review of Al Duomo
29 May 08, 18:42
Italian clubbing underground style
I kid you not, there is a seriously underground club underneath this wonderful Italian restaurant. And I mean underground in both senses of the word - it's literally underneath the restaurant and underground i.e: cutting edge music (or so the promoters will tell you). So if you want some tasty food, or late night boogying, Al Duomo has it all.

Review of Waterloo Railway Station

How much can it cost to spend a penny?
Okay, I'm going to sound really, really old now. However, I have to ask, in our modern day society honestly, how much can it cost to spend a penny? Yes, I'm talking about the fact you have to part with a full 30 pennies to spend just one penny in the public amenieties when nature calls in this station. At least at Harrods you get spritzed with the latest parfum whilst washing your hands after spending hard earned cash to use their toilets. Rant over.

Review of Hells Kitchen

delish veggie sausage rolls
Hells Kitchen - what a name! Don't be put off by it though, the veggie sausage rolls dusted with sesame seeds are really good in here. I often grab a quick pie from here when I don't have time to stop down the lanes, which is always really convenient.

Review of Blockbuster Video
01 May 08, 20:05
service is always really good
This Blockbuster is great for me because it's convenient, however the selection never seems as much as what you'd expect as it's rather a small branch. The service is always really good in here, and they're open every day except Christmas day. They also do great offers in here too (such as three videos for seven days for five pounds).

Review of Strada
30 Apr 08, 14:21
a perfect place to go for a quick but luxe lunch
Strada does a wonderful lunch menu - just £7.50 for a main and a glass of house plonk. I ate a really delicious pasta dish here which was just so fresh and tasty, and the atmosphere in here is really nice. It's a perfect place to go for a quick but luxe lunch in the middle of the day.

Review of Browns

The bar makes a mean Espresso Martini
You have the choice with Browns to enjoy a cocktail in the bar, or sample their French bistro menu in the restaurant two doors away (on the other side of Heals). The bar makes a mean Espresso Martini, which is a great pick you up at any time of day (or night).

Just stopped for tea...
I've never actually eaten here, however it's always really busy in the evening. I've stopped in here for a tea in the afternoon, and it was a bit dead. Luckily I was with a friend and catching up so we weren't relying on the ambience to fill our afternoon.

Review of Otello Restaurant
30 Apr 08, 14:04
a well stocked delicatessen
Otello's have just opened up their own version of Bills attached to their restaurant - a well stocked delicatessen and fruit and vegetable range. So you can do your shopping and then nip into the little cafe which stays open almost as late as the main restaurant and enjoy a lighter bite or a nice cuppa char.

Review of Alias Hotel Seattle
30 Apr 08, 13:49
enjoyed the cocktail masterclass
I've not actually stayed here, but enjoyed the cocktail masterclass one drunken afternoon a few months ago. The masterclass lasts for two hours and is hosted by just one man who manages to keep his group (usually a gaggling raucous hen do of 14 girls like I was on I imagine) completely entertained and under control. The views from the bar are fantastic and it is a great way to break up a weekend if you're in Brighton with a big group of girls. I have to take my hat off to the bar tender, he was really, really good.

Review of Barda
30 Apr 08, 13:28
good for a business meeting
This is a very pricey restaurant considering it's location, which isn't all that glamourous tucked behind the train station.. However, once you're inside it's a great fine dining experience, and the food is delicious. They do a lunch special which makes it good for a business meeting during the day.

I was fortunate enough to have found this Thai restaurant just after I'd arrived back from a few months in Thailand, and it didn't disappoint. Their Phad Thai and Tom Yam is just as fragrant as in the land of smiles itself.

Review of Bali Brasserie

a winning combination
What a winning combination: on a Sunday evening you can eat a delish curry, accompanied by watching Brighton's finest Kareoke Kings and Queens belting out some of the finest pop records ever. It's got a carpeted bar so you can prop yourself up after one Tiger beer too many in comfort.

Review of Pret A Manger
29 Apr 08, 10:50
YUM every time
Pret is just GORGEOUS. Where else could you find a no-bread sandwich? It's hard to believe that this chain is owned by Maccy D's considering a) how fabulously delish and healthy their food is and b) how they manage to keep it from feeling too "chainy". They do wonderful smoothies and salads too, and yummy almond crossaints if you've fallen off the health-wagon. YUM every time.

Review of Caffe Nero
29 Apr 08, 10:45
very cosmo for Hove
Every time I go past Cafe Nero in Hove on the bus I always get very envious of all the people sitting outside enjoying a nice relaxing drink in the sunshine whilst I'm on a mission somewhere in a mad panic. This is a perfect people-watching spot. You'll also get to watch a lot of traffic too as it's right next to the main road. Don't let that put you off though, it's very cosmo for Hove!

Sausage and Mash-tastic
What a great little USP. At The Ancient Mariner you can drink a nice pint, whilst eating one of their fabulous choices of Sausage and Mash and play a board game all at once. It's a great spot for a sundowner too if you sit outside on the decking out the front.

gorgeous garden
I've only been in this pub once and it was pretty quiet, although I think it's because we'd just missed the Sunday rush. It's a wonderful little building on First Avenue and they have a gorgeous garden for the green fingered amongst us! Probably great in the Summer.

Review of Audio
29 Apr 08, 10:30
fantastic in the summer
This club has a special place in my heart. I used to spend many a weekend night here in the mid ninetees (usually when I should have been revising for exams) having a great time when the venue was formerly the Escape. Since then the venue has been divided in to two seperate clubs, so you can either pay to go upstairs, or downstairs. The two floors were recently combined for a one-night-only party which was "just like the old days" where you could wander freely between the two floors. I love the decking they've put outside the Above Audio entrance which is fantastic in the summer .

Review of Casablanca Jazz Club
29 Apr 08, 10:26
absolutely fantastic Jazz nights
This is a very, very fun Brighton venue. They do some absolutely fantastic Jazz nights in here. Even if you're not into that kind of music, I can guarantee you you'll have a fantastic time. The only minus is that it's in a basement, but I guess that adds to the ambience of the underground Jazz vibe. Definitely worth a visit.

Review of Pub With No Name
29 Apr 08, 10:24
Very quirky
Do you know how hard it is to find this pub when you don't know where it is? Ask a passer by "Er, excuse me, can you tell me where the Pub with No Name is please?" to which the passer by answers "What's it called" and so it goes on. A very unassuming little spot, like someone's front room, in the Hanover area of Brighton. Very quirky and original.

for the young amongst us
This club is for the young amongst us...which unfortunately doesn't include me anymore. Famous for it's heyday during the superclub era of the mid-ninetees, this club is now not a destination I'd go out of my way to go to, but I think they still put on the classic Bedrock nights there.

Review of W H Smith
23 Apr 08, 14:22
This Smiths is HUGE
This Smiths is HUGE. Two floors of magazines, books and stationary, plus a post office to boot. The queues are generally mahoosive on a Saturday, so don't think you'll be able to nip in to buy Heat before you get on your bus at Churchill Square. You will be able to get any specialist magazine you've ever wanted here though, so just leave yourself time to shop.

I've never been much of a Karen Millen girl
I've never been much of a Karen Millen girl. The first item I ever bought in here was a bridesmaid dress to wear for a friend's wedding, which has stayed in the wardrobe ever since that wonderful day. I've got a few friends that are KM girls through and through, so I will keep on window shopping until I manage to buy something here.

Review of Latino Restaurant
23 Apr 08, 13:53
perfect lighting and ambience
I really was looking forward to eating in here on my birthday a year ago. There was a big group of us who decided to Latinos after an all day party playing rounders in Preston Park. We were all pretty tired and admittedly we did rock up almost at the end of service. The food wasn't half as nice as I was hoping for, however the space upstairs we sat in was really regal and well decorated, with perfect lighting and ambience.

wonderful treatments
I don't think I've fully exploited all the wonderful treatments on offer here at The Treatment Rooms. I had a wax done here, which as waxes go wasn't really too much to write home about, but hey, when are they? No complaints at all about this well-reviewed beauty shop.

Great if you're a student...
...but not so great if you're not! It's loud, a bit grungey but strangely homely. I used to come in here an awful lot and have too much of a good time on Hooegarden. They still do this fine white beer, but I have matured considerably and left those heady drinking days behind me.

a mean moscow mule
This venue has just got the best cocktail selection. They do a mean moscow mule, which means you can sink a few more than you'd like to in the summer sun in their sunken beer garden. There aren't too many buzzy bars in Sunny Tunny, but this is one that I'd always go back to.

Gorgeous Sunday Roasts
This is a really beautiful little pub tucked away in the middle of Sussex. You really do need to drive to get to this pub, but it's well worth it...just try to get out of the driving so you can enjoy a tipple. We came here on a misty Sunday, and the chilly air added to the wonderful sirene atmosphere. The pub sit's next to a little stream that trickles along side the car park. This is probably a wonderful spot in the summer.

Review of Churchill Square Shopping Centre
21 Apr 08, 18:32
a good selection of quality brands
It's nice to have a good selection of quality brands in a shopping centre like this. Zara's great (despite the inevitable queues), plus there's a wonderul Habitat which I often spend hours drooling over the furniture I can't afford. They've got a great exhibition/promotion space in the atrium and it manages to feel not as claustrophobic as most shopping centres do.

Review of Biscuit Factory
21 Apr 08, 18:29
A nice little watering hole!
The Biscuit Factory is a rather nice little watering hole. I like the interior, which feels ever so "Victoriana". The bar's in the middle of the pub, which you can walk 360 degrees around, and the way it's been decorated makes you think that Jack the Ripper or Oliver Twist will burst in through the doors any minute. A great atmosphere.

get inspired
You know how you go somewhere and get inspired...buy all the kit to start your new hobby, and then it sits in the cupboard for the next ten years? Well, about two years ago I decided I would make some bracelets as my new hobby. Along with watching paint dry. The beads still sit unloved in the cupboard along with the wet suit and surfing gear that I've still not yet taken further as a hobby.

Hove Park's great to run around in a circuit. It's got a good mix of plants, flowers, grass, trees and people. Oooh, not forgetting the now defunct and rusting miniature railway that used to carry a full sized human being who would sit on the tiny vehicle and drive it around the 25 metre track.

everything you'd expect
Can someone please tell me why the door to this Boots had been broken for the past six months? As if the amount of money I fritter on cosmetics and toiletries in this store on a lunch time won't fund an engineer to fix it so I can get in and out that much quicker than having to walk an extra two feet up the street and go in the other door. Apart from that it's got everything you'd expect.

Boots beauty bonanza
Boots has a great cosmetics range, and a huge selection of 2 for 3's at Christmas time. They've got a huge fragrance department too so there's no need to smell like last week's laundry when you enjoy a nice sampling session in here. The queue is usually MASSIVE at the weekend though and that can be quite stressful.

21st Century Ritzy
This club has worked really hard to dispel the 90's Ritzy image that clubs this size and style are reknown for. It's mad to think that so many people can be so drunk all at the same time under a haze of flashing lights. I've fond memories of student night here back in the late nineties which saw car loads of me any my student buddies crammed in the car all the way from Eastbourne. Well you can't blame us, 50p for a vodka and coke is just perfect prices when you're a poor student. Great memories.

Uber efficient, just a little pricey. But I'm sure that's another debate. Why are taxis in Brighton just so darn expensive? £10 for 3 miles...this must be more expensive than London. More wool than fabric...
In an age where there's lots of consumer choice and places to spend your money, I think this store would do better to increase their range. It's currently more wool than fabric. My request for some wool-mix fabric in a lilac tone wasn't too specific I thought, but they didn't have any in stock. I ended up buying 2.5 metres in Leeds in the end.

Oh this store has great memories for me. Not least because one of my best friends used to work here for a few years. I went to Pee Wees many moons ago...in fact years. And like all good salons you find a great stylist and then they leave. Thankfully I've found my new hair dresser in London but I've nothing but fond memories of Pee Wees.

Review of Clarks

They're turning their brand around
Once a mecca for parents to kit their children out in their first school shoes, and for the woman who wanted just comfort, Clarkes is slowly turning their brand around. They're getting more adventurous with their collection, and there genuinely are some quite sweet vintage-esque shoes that I really wouldn't mind adding to my collection.

shoe lust
I always walk past the store and lust over their fantastic selection of shoes. They're all pretty cute, but I do wish they stocked a bigger collection of Poste Mistress.

Review of The Dorset Street Bar
16 Apr 08, 20:42
Dorset's best for Dining
Not too fussed on their booze, but I think their French Bistro-ish style dining can fill a hole. It's gorgeous for lunch in the summer to sit outside smuggly whilst heaps of other people look hopefully for a free table to sit out and enjoy the sunshine over a glass of vino.

Review of Minky

cutting edge design
I like this shop. It's just my purse that has the problem with it. It stocks the occasional piece but the fits can be not so flattering (a lot of their products are sourced from Scandinavia), so you get cutting edge design but at the compromise of it actually being ablt to fit.

Review of Get Cutie

a one-stop shop
One of the many kitsch and cute shops in Brighton. Delivered from God to help dissolve panic from present-shoppers, this store is a one-stop shop for those hard-to-buy-for friends. It's not so good for men's gifts, but there's always an ironic jokey pressie that you can get which will do the trick.

Review of Reiss

Contemporary high street fashion
Reiss always offers contemporary high street fashion and there's generally always a bag or a pair of shoes that I fall in love with. This then generally ends up with me lusting after them for the whole season, saving up for them and then realising that they've all sold out. And so it happens again the following season. Great in sale time too to boost the work wardrobe, and the menswear in there is superstylee too.

Review of Grand Central
16 Apr 08, 18:29
Not bad considering Hove's station pub
Not bad considering Hove's station pub - which is almost a chore to go in. The Grand Central is actually a half decent pub considering it's so close to the train station. It's an easy meeting point for newcomers to the beautiful city of Brighton, and they do have a yard which is open in the summer for drinking.

Review of Caxton Arms

A nice cosy pub
A nice cosy pub, located close to Brighton Station, but well hidden from passing trade. Always busy (the bar's pretty small), but there's a sunken garden out the back which accomodates the Friday night surge of drinkers.

Review of British Bookshop & Sussex Stationers

A stationary addict's fix on a Sunday
If you're a stationary addict and live in Hove, then this is your fix on a Sunday when you can't be bothered to schlep into town to Paperchase. It's one of those Sussex Insitutions to me and reminds me of buying my stationary for school when I lived in Eastbourne. A guilty pleasure.

Review of Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club

Nearly a wag
Well, seeing as I was nearly a wag (but that's another story) I've got to rate this brilliant football club. They do some great community initiatives and I can't wait for their new stadium to open in 2010. Go on the Seagulls!

Review of Velvet
16 Apr 08, 17:45
An absolute must for shabby chic
Velvet (both in Hove and Brighton) is an absolute must for shabby chic gifts and accessories. Great for girly gifts, cards and even clothes - so you often end up buying not just your friend a pressie, but one for you too!

Review of Sussex Cricketer

Perfect for a pint at the fireworks
I wouldn't ordinarily go here, but after a lovely evening at the Sussex Cricket Club fireworks event I snuck in for a cheeky pint of cider. It was a wintery November evening, the fire was roaring, and the bar was busy, but the atmosphere was great and I imagine they trade fantastically well.

Review of Tesco Stores
16 Apr 08, 14:29
Basket case
They seemed to have sorted out their rather bad basket situation - i.e: there never are any. Recently they've been a bit more fruitful on the basket front though which is good. They have a few individuals on the check outs who are always really friendly and familiar. As with most Tescos they always seem to run out of fresh herbs every time I need that. Why is that?!

Sakib: the personal shopping star
Debenhams have a secret weapon: Sakib the personal shopping star. Debenhams is a great place to get your Benefit beauty products - their counter girls are fantastic, Lauren is a gem.

Review of Brighton Pier

2p machines rock
Got friend's visiting? Then don't let them escape without taking them for a visit to Brighton Pier. Even if it is for purely selfish reasons so you can play on the 2p machines! I still have no idea what the tactic is to win a fluffy toy, but I enjoy wasting my pocket money trying to find out. The rides aren't open in the evening, but the Pier Party on May 1 is a chance to ride the helter skelter by moonlight when all the rides are staying open for the evening.

Review of Koba Public House
16 Apr 08, 13:47
They know their cocktails
I like Koba. They know their cocktails, and have a great little space to party - formerly the members bar. It's a shame it's stuck next to Waitrose on Western Road, but it's nice to take the girls to when they're down from London.

Review of Blatchington Road Launderette
15 Apr 08, 09:12
always a spare machine for those smalls!
This is a very kitsch launderette (but aren't they all?!). Saturday's are usually wash day for me, but if I can't spare the time to do my own wash, there's always someone helpful manning the service washes. Pauline's the most lovely lady who'll turn around a service wash for you sometimes in just two hours on a busy Saturday. Beats having to dry laundry indoors without a garden in my book!
