Review of D L Jones & Son

29 May 08, 22:37

A wonderful family business - don't go changing! 4*

This store deserves a fantastic review based on the fact that it's one of those wonderfully family run businesses that is managing to survive despite globalization. Mr D L Jones and his son both work in the shop. The shop is rammed floor to ceiling in jewellery and collector's pieces, and it gives you a real taste of days gone by. I don't know where else I would've been able to get my Sanio 1970's calculator watch restored.

Review of Eddys Take Away Food Shops

fantastic Christmas light display 4*

If you're not sure where Eddies is, then I suggest that you take a drive up Sackville Road during December to take full advantage of the absolutely fantastic Christmas light display they adorn their shop facia in. It's tacky but in such an ironic way. Plus they were amazing on a drunken night recently when they kept their shop open for me to collect a Hawaiian half an hour after they'd shut. Now that's what I call service.

Review of Eaton Road Dental Practice

29 May 08, 19:22

Insist on having the door closed! 2*

I'm still deciding if I like this dental practice or not. Based on my experiences of being rather scared of any dental work, I joined this practice in January. When I arrived I was able to watch and hear the person's treatment sitting in the dreaded (for some) chair in the treatment room. I asked to have the door shut when I went in, to save not only my own dignity from screaming like a three year old child before the dentist even started looking, but also because it's quite an odd thing to have people in the waiting room, which is right next to the only treatment room in the practice, being able to experience your pain along with you. However, the work I've had has been reasonable. The building's actually quite quaint, and like a wooden lodge at centre parcs. Just opposite the Cricket Club in Hove too so a nice leafy surroundings whilst you have a lovey root canal.

Review of Starbucks

29 May 08, 19:00

a little taste of New York in the middle of boho Brighton 4*

Starbucks Western Road has that great vibe that you want when you buy into the Starbucks brand. Go upstairs and there's a floor dedicated to sofas and tables where you'll find a whole mix of tourists, locals, students, school kids and yummy mummies catching up over their frappucinos. It really feels like a little taste of New York in the middle of boho Brighton.

Review of Freemasons Tavern

01 May 08, 20:17

Is it me or is the music in here really, really, really loud? 2*

Is it me or is the music in here really, really, really loud? I've been to this bar on many occasion, often in a biggish group of people, which has generally always been a mistake as you just can't hear a word anyone says. Yes. I'm old. I think if they turned the music down and played a better variety of music then it may get a better mix of people who can actually stay here and enjoy it rather than do a quick drink and move on.

Review of Blockbuster Video

01 May 08, 20:05

service is always really good 3*

This Blockbuster is great for me because it's convenient, however the selection never seems as much as what you'd expect as it's rather a small branch. The service is always really good in here, and they're open every day except Christmas day. They also do great offers in here too (such as three videos for seven days for five pounds).

Review of Oxfam

01 May 08, 20:03

always inspiring 4*

You know when you're looking for a charity shop that has all the retro delights you could ever possibly wish to find, but that hasn't been perfectly merchandised to satisfy the appetite of a professional charity shopper? Well, Oxfam Blatchington Road is it. Heaps of beautiful vintage accessories, evening and day wear. They always do wonderful window displays too which is always inspiring.

Review of Coriander Restaurant

30 Apr 08, 14:10

Just stopped for tea... 3*

I've never actually eaten here, however it's always really busy in the evening. I've stopped in here for a tea in the afternoon, and it was a bit dead. Luckily I was with a friend and catching up so we weren't relying on the ambience to fill our afternoon.

Review of Orsino Cocktail Bar Restaurant

30 Apr 08, 14:08

the most fabulous risotto 4*

Orsinos do the most fabulous risotto and a lovely house wine. They have a really big menu, which does make you worry a bit after watching Gordon Ramsay's recommendations of keeping the menu small to keep it fresh, however I enjoyed a gorgeous chicken dish here with a lemon sauce and it was wonderful. It's got great atmosphere, although they have one waiter who can get a bit moody which is a bit off putting...but don't let that put you off as it's a great little place.

Review of Otello Restaurant

30 Apr 08, 14:04

a well stocked delicatessen 3*

Otello's have just opened up their own version of Bills attached to their restaurant - a well stocked delicatessen and fruit and vegetable range. So you can do your shopping and then nip into the little cafe which stays open almost as late as the main restaurant and enjoy a lighter bite or a nice cuppa char.

Review of Bali Brasserie

29 Apr 08, 11:06

a winning combination 3*

What a winning combination: on a Sunday evening you can eat a delish curry, accompanied by watching Brighton's finest Kareoke Kings and Queens belting out some of the finest pop records ever. It's got a carpeted bar so you can prop yourself up after one Tiger beer too many in comfort.

Review of Caffe Nero

29 Apr 08, 10:45

very cosmo for Hove 3*

Every time I go past Cafe Nero in Hove on the bus I always get very envious of all the people sitting outside enjoying a nice relaxing drink in the sunshine whilst I'm on a mission somewhere in a mad panic. This is a perfect people-watching spot. You'll also get to watch a lot of traffic too as it's right next to the main road. Don't let that put you off though, it's very cosmo for Hove!

Review of Ancient Mariner

Sausage and Mash-tastic 3*

What a great little USP. At The Ancient Mariner you can drink a nice pint, whilst eating one of their fabulous choices of Sausage and Mash and play a board game all at once. It's a great spot for a sundowner too if you sit outside on the decking out the front.

Review of Hove Place

29 Apr 08, 10:41

gorgeous garden 3*

I've only been in this pub once and it was pretty quiet, although I think it's because we'd just missed the Sunday rush. It's a wonderful little building on First Avenue and they have a gorgeous garden for the green fingered amongst us! Probably great in the Summer.

Review of Latino Restaurant

23 Apr 08, 13:53

perfect lighting and ambience 3*

I really was looking forward to eating in here on my birthday a year ago. There was a big group of us who decided to Latinos after an all day party playing rounders in Preston Park. We were all pretty tired and admittedly we did rock up almost at the end of service. The food wasn't half as nice as I was hoping for, however the space upstairs we sat in was really regal and well decorated, with perfect lighting and ambience.

Review of Bankers Fish Restaurant & Take Away

23 Apr 08, 13:11

Beer and Battered Cod.. 4*

What could be more perfect than enjoying a nice ice cold beer at the same time as a large chips and battered cod? This unassuming fish and chip restaurant is just outstanding. It's no frills interior allows for you to go in at any time of day regardless of your state of dress at the time (evening or day). What I love about this place is you can often see the fishermen who've come in from their day's hard graft out at sea and are enjoying a well-earned rest after delivering the fresh fish which goes straight to your plate as quick as you can say "saveloy". Delicious.

Review of Dominos Pizza

23 Apr 08, 13:02

really, really tasty 3*

This Pizza was delivered on time, and was really, really tasty. Considering it was lunchtime (i.e the food wasn't masked by five pints of beer, by which time anything tastes good), this was very comforting.

Review of Tin Drum

22 Apr 08, 14:58

a great little spot 4*

This is a great little spot for a morning coffee, lazy lunch, afternoon spritzer or end of the day g&t. Their food is always really well cooked, their menu relatively small which is always comforting - you can't help but think that everything's fresh as a result of the limited selection. The mackarel open sandwich is a lovely lunchtime dish, I really couldn't fault this fantastic venue.

Review of Pizza Express Restaurants

21 Apr 08, 18:43

I love Pizza Express 3*

I love Pizza Express. I just never think to go along to this one as it's not as nice inside as the one on Jubilee Street. However, it does to delivery so I should make use of that more often!

Review of Biscuit Factory

21 Apr 08, 18:29

A nice little watering hole! 3*

The Biscuit Factory is a rather nice little watering hole. I like the interior, which feels ever so "Victoriana". The bar's in the middle of the pub, which you can walk 360 degrees around, and the way it's been decorated makes you think that Jack the Ripper or Oliver Twist will burst in through the doors any minute. A great atmosphere.

Review of Hove Park

21 Apr 08, 18:15

a good mix of plants, flowers, grass, trees 3*

Hove Park's great to run around in a circuit. It's got a good mix of plants, flowers, grass, trees and people. Oooh, not forgetting the now defunct and rusting miniature railway that used to carry a full sized human being who would sit on the tiny vehicle and drive it around the 25 metre track.

Review of Packwoods Property Services

21 Apr 08, 18:10

no interest in making their customers happy 4*

I genuinely wouldn't want my worst enemy to have the misfortune of having to deal with this excuse of a company. Unfortunately I've spend the past six months un-tangling a web of fines and incompetence that have been induced by PPS. They have absolutely no interest in making their customers happy. Although they have every interest in taking their money. Save yourself and your sanity and never do business with this company.

Review of Real Eating Co

18 Apr 08, 17:07

Over promised, under-delivered 2*

I had high hopes for this well-recommended eaterie. Unfortunately I felt it was over promised and under-delivered. It wants to be a wine bar bistro looking at their amazingly extensive wine list. But their choice of beers were really limited and sometimes that's all you want at brunchtime. For the price we paid the quality of the food on the plate didn't match it.

Review of Ethels Kitchen

18 Apr 08, 13:56

Quirky child friendly cafe 3*

This is a quirky child friendly cafe. Tucked in the middle of Blatchington Road, it's always busy on a Sunday. Nice cakes and friendly service. Exceptionally fantastic vintage tea cups and saucers if you're into that kind of thing.

Review of Tesco Stores

17 Apr 08, 13:51

Could be a bit better stocked 3*

Could be a bit better stocked, but really, how much can you squeeze into a small space like this? I'm glad this supermarket's close to the train station, plus it stays open really late every day so it's great if you've run out of some ingredients for the Sunday roast when all the other shops have shut.

Review of Karims

16 Apr 08, 20:38

Even when you're drunk it doesn't taste good 1*

Even when you're drunk it doesn't taste good here at Karims. And that's just the service. The owner (who also runs the restaurant I think), makes you think he's doing you a favour by cooking for you. Our curry was runny, flavourless and served with no love. Stick with Ashoka on Church Road.

Review of Ashoka Tandoori Restaurant

16 Apr 08, 18:40

Ooh, I'm getting hungry just thinking about it! 4*

I do pity the poor staff in here who usually have to put up with me and my posse who invade this delightful indian restaurant after a few too many alcopops. But I have to say, that the staff are fantastic, sublimely polite and always give great service. I can highly recommend the Lamb Pathia, which they always make just a bit spicier if I'm feeling daring that night. Ooh, I'm getting hungry just thinking about it!

Review of Dragons Health Club

16 Apr 08, 18:26

I really want to like this gym... 2*

I really want to like this gym...but it's really hard to. The people are friendly enough, but I just haven't connected with it. The radio's never loud enough in the changing room, so I can't hear Southern FM's Danny and Nicky in the Morning loud enough after I've had my workout and I'm getting showered, which is always frustrating as it's my favourite breakfast show! But that's not the only reason - it just feels like it needs a bit of customer love. Remove the sardine-packed spinning bikes from the studio so you don't have to be splattered by the bloke sweating profusely next to you. Clean the mirrors in the treadmill room a bit better please, and get more parking. Please.

Review of British Bookshop & Sussex Stationers

A stationary addict's fix on a Sunday 3*

If you're a stationary addict and live in Hove, then this is your fix on a Sunday when you can't be bothered to schlep into town to Paperchase. It's one of those Sussex Insitutions to me and reminds me of buying my stationary for school when I lived in Eastbourne. A guilty pleasure.

Review of Velvet

16 Apr 08, 17:45

An absolute must for shabby chic 3*

Velvet (both in Hove and Brighton) is an absolute must for shabby chic gifts and accessories. Great for girly gifts, cards and even clothes - so you often end up buying not just your friend a pressie, but one for you too!

Review of Sussex Cricketer

16 Apr 08, 17:29

Perfect for a pint at the fireworks 3*

I wouldn't ordinarily go here, but after a lovely evening at the Sussex Cricket Club fireworks event I snuck in for a cheeky pint of cider. It was a wintery November evening, the fire was roaring, and the bar was busy, but the atmosphere was great and I imagine they trade fantastically well.

Review of The Station

16 Apr 08, 14:32

Lots of potential... 2*

But it just doesn't maximise on it. Just because a pub's next to the station, it doesn't mean that everyone will drink in it. Just the people who get off the long commute back from London who are dying for a beer. It's a shame as there's not many drinking establishments close by, but come on, give it a bit more atmosphere and step up your game to give Hove Station a pub to be proud of!

Review of Tesco Stores

16 Apr 08, 14:29

Basket case 3*

They seemed to have sorted out their rather bad basket situation - i.e: there never are any. Recently they've been a bit more fruitful on the basket front though which is good. They have a few individuals on the check outs who are always really friendly and familiar. As with most Tescos they always seem to run out of fresh herbs every time I need that. Why is that?!

Who knew Vegan could be this good? 4*

Who knew Vegan could be this good? If you, like me, are often on the Carol Vorderman detox diet (okay, maybe I'm not on it that often, but I like to pretend), then you can enjoy delicious food here. They do great White Chai Tea too. Their USP is the Stitch and Bitch group which meets weekly to knit and...bitch?! This sums up Brighton's diversity to a tee.

Review of Brighton & Hove Bus & Coach Co

16 Apr 08, 13:46

Buses cost more in Brighton than London 1*

Seeing as buses cost more in Brighton than London, you'd naturally expect a better service. However, I've experienced drivers not bothering to stop and moving off whilst passengers have tried to board. The biscuit came on Saturday night on the No.7 on my way home from seeing some friends in Kemptown. The driver decided to park his bus (complete with passengers) on Queens Road to go into a newsagents and buy himself three chocolate bars. It was late enough - 10:45pm - and he was in the shop for at least 5 minutes. If we're paying through the nose to use buses, at least give us the service we deserve.

Review of The Forager

16 Apr 08, 13:41

Nice for a local 4*

This is probably the closest pub to my house, pretty nice for a local at that too. Conveniently on the way home from doing the Tesco shop which is always good to recouperate from carrying the shopping over a nice glass of organic pinot noir. Excellent wine list, lovely service, tasty local food. It's more restaurant than pub prices so we don't eat in there as often as we'd like to (about £15 for a main). Their main competitor is the Ginger Pig on Hove Street, and I think that their food keeps their game up for sure. I think they need to sort out the lighting in there a bit which makes the space feel cold and a bit static.

Review of Harrys

16 Apr 08, 13:30

Don't do it! 1*

I have no idea how this place is still open. Perhaps you have to be really hungover to eat in here so anything tastes good after a night on the shandies. I ate a tuna steak in here that was more like a leather steak, the beer and wine was warm, the garlic bread wasn't even good enough to pass as Tesco value and the service was really unprofessional. It was so revolting that I'd only eaten two mouthfuls, said I couldn't eat it, and they still made me pay! Perhaps it was an off day when I went. I'm not going to risk it again though.

Review of Express Repairs & Alterations

16 Apr 08, 13:18

They can't do enough for you 4*

This is a lovely family run alterations company. It's no-nonsence appearance should not put you off. Their service is fantastic. They're an agent for Kemptown Dry Cleaners so you'll get your dry cleaning immaculately returned for half the price of Johnsons. They genuinely can't do enough for you, and they often say that half of their customers come from having bad experiences at Johnsons.

Review of Johnson Cleaners

16 Apr 08, 13:14

The customer is always wrong 1*

After receiving absolutely terrible customer service and results I've decided on what Johnson's customer service policy is: "The customer is always wrong". I've often stood behind customers who've lost items that have been cleaned and felt so sorry for them, until I get to the front desk and it's me who's had my favourite dress ruined. Even though I've had it cleaned somewhere else professionally already without problems, Johnsons will always tell you that a) it's your fault and b) it's a manufacturing problem. They'll then send it off for technical inspection and then they'll still tell you it wasn't their fault. Only take your dry cleaning to Johnsons if you never want to wear it again. On this occassion, I was told that another customer had brought in a £2k pair of jeans (my dress was worth £1175) and they got ruined. So that definitely means it was my fault then. They are just AWFUL and I urge you never to part with your hard-earned cash here. Try Kemptown Dry Cleaners if you live in Brighton or Hove - they're absolutely amazing.

Review of Blatchington Road Launderette

15 Apr 08, 09:12

always a spare machine for those smalls! 3*

This is a very kitsch launderette (but aren't they all?!). Saturday's are usually wash day for me, but if I can't spare the time to do my own wash, there's always someone helpful manning the service washes. Pauline's the most lovely lady who'll turn around a service wash for you sometimes in just two hours on a busy Saturday. Beats having to dry laundry indoors without a garden in my book!
