Review of Casa Don Carlos

This place never lets you down
Hidden in the Brighton Laines this restaurant's an absolute must if you really love tapas. Booking's essential at the weekend, and even on a weekday evening you may have to wait for a table. But persevere, this is the best tapas I've ever tasted - including that in Spain (where I've lived). My fiancé always goes for the tasty and meaty paella, and I never miss their Pimiento de Padron (although it's a seasonal special). Their house Rioja is fantastically priced and uncompromising in taste. 5 tapas dishes, four drinks and a side comes in under £40. The friendly and professional waiters - who're all Spanish - never fail to remember my favourite dishes and make every visit an absolute pleasure. Oooh, and if you don't want to eat carbs after 5pm then what better menu choice could you ever want than at Casa don Carlos? An absolute must, mui bien!

Review of Blatchington Road Launderette

always a spare machine for those smalls!
This is a very kitsch launderette (but aren't they all?!). Saturday's are usually wash day for me, but if I can't spare the time to do my own wash, there's always someone helpful manning the service washes. Pauline's the most lovely lady who'll turn around a service wash for you sometimes in just two hours on a busy Saturday. Beats having to dry laundry indoors without a garden in my book!

Review of Johnson Cleaners
16 Apr 08, 13:14
The customer is always wrong
After receiving absolutely terrible customer service and results I've decided on what Johnson's customer service policy is: "The customer is always wrong". I've often stood behind customers who've lost items that have been cleaned and felt so sorry for them, until I get to the front desk and it's me who's had my favourite dress ruined. Even though I've had it cleaned somewhere else professionally already without problems, Johnsons will always tell you that a) it's your fault and b) it's a manufacturing problem. They'll then send it off for technical inspection and then they'll still tell you it wasn't their fault. Only take your dry cleaning to Johnsons if you never want to wear it again. On this occassion, I was told that another customer had brought in a £2k pair of jeans (my dress was worth £1175) and they got ruined. So that definitely means it was my fault then. They are just AWFUL and I urge you never to part with your hard-earned cash here. Try Kemptown Dry Cleaners if you live in Brighton or Hove - they're absolutely amazing.

Review of Express Repairs & Alterations

They can't do enough for you
This is a lovely family run alterations company. It's no-nonsence appearance should not put you off. Their service is fantastic. They're an agent for Kemptown Dry Cleaners so you'll get your dry cleaning immaculately returned for half the price of Johnsons. They genuinely can't do enough for you, and they often say that half of their customers come from having bad experiences at Johnsons.

Review of Ha! Ha! Bar & Canteen

5* in the "Scores on the Doors" food hygiene award scheme
There aren't many places to eat in Brighton and Hove which have scored 5 stars in the "Scores on the Doors" food hygiene award scheme. However this place has. The food's always really tasty - go for the Fish Finger Sandwiches every time! A great spot for lunch after a busy afternoon's shopping at the weekend. My only gripe: Take a very warm jumper in winter, it gets really cold in there - to the point their beer taps freeze over. The temperature's been fine since about March though so you should be fine in the summer!

Review of Harrys

Don't do it!
I have no idea how this place is still open. Perhaps you have to be really hungover to eat in here so anything tastes good after a night on the shandies. I ate a tuna steak in here that was more like a leather steak, the beer and wine was warm, the garlic bread wasn't even good enough to pass as Tesco value and the service was really unprofessional. It was so revolting that I'd only eaten two mouthfuls, said I couldn't eat it, and they still made me pay! Perhaps it was an off day when I went. I'm not going to risk it again though.

Review of The Forager

Nice for a local
This is probably the closest pub to my house, pretty nice for a local at that too. Conveniently on the way home from doing the Tesco shop which is always good to recouperate from carrying the shopping over a nice glass of organic pinot noir. Excellent wine list, lovely service, tasty local food. It's more restaurant than pub prices so we don't eat in there as often as we'd like to (about £15 for a main). Their main competitor is the Ginger Pig on Hove Street, and I think that their food keeps their game up for sure. I think they need to sort out the lighting in there a bit which makes the space feel cold and a bit static.

Review of Brighton & Hove Bus & Coach Co
16 Apr 08, 13:46
Buses cost more in Brighton than London
Seeing as buses cost more in Brighton than London, you'd naturally expect a better service. However, I've experienced drivers not bothering to stop and moving off whilst passengers have tried to board. The biscuit came on Saturday night on the No.7 on my way home from seeing some friends in Kemptown. The driver decided to park his bus (complete with passengers) on Queens Road to go into a newsagents and buy himself three chocolate bars. It was late enough - 10:45pm - and he was in the shop for at least 5 minutes. If we're paying through the nose to use buses, at least give us the service we deserve.

Review of Koba Public House

They know their cocktails
I like Koba. They know their cocktails, and have a great little space to party - formerly the members bar. It's a shame it's stuck next to Waitrose on Western Road, but it's nice to take the girls to when they're down from London.

Who knew Vegan could be this good?
Who knew Vegan could be this good? If you, like me, are often on the Carol Vorderman detox diet (okay, maybe I'm not on it that often, but I like to pretend), then you can enjoy delicious food here. They do great White Chai Tea too. Their USP is the Stitch and Bitch group which meets weekly to knit and...bitch?! This sums up Brighton's diversity to a tee.
