Review of Powderham Farm Shop Tea & Coffee Shop

Never again!
This place is good and certainly much improved of late.
However, don't do what I did and ask for something 'off menu' - you get shouted at.
Here's the story : at the start of a family holiday we all thought how nice it would be to have breakfast somewhere nice.
Our youngest daughter really likes scrambled egg - and, good news, it's on their (fairly limited) breakfast menu. However, the scrambled egg comes with smoked salmon mixed into it (which my daughter doesn't like).
Now, you'd have thought that asking for the smoked salmon to be removed would be a fairly reasonable request, wouldn't you? Well, you'd be wrong!
The woman begind the counter literally shouted at my wife, 'YOU CAN'T CHANGE THE MENU!'
Realising her heavy-handedness, she then explained with great 'attitude' that, OK, they would remove the smoked salmon but the price (c£6) would not change.
We left at this point and have never returned.
Needless to say, it wasn't the relaxed and happy start to our family holiday that we'd hoped for.

Review of Leaf Street

Better than the multiples
Yes, you could spend hours wandering around chain-stores on the high street - but this is a far nicer experience. Emma (the owner) buys interesting things for the home and great gifts, too.
The staff are warm and friendly and everything you buy comes nicely wrapped.

Review of Cafe Magdalen

You get what you pay for...
The cafe is cheap and basic - but sometimes that's exactly what you want.
Don't expect friendly service - but do expect good, honest cafe-type food keenly-priced and well cooked.

Love it!
This place has got the lot : it's really near to Exeter (so dead easy to get to); it has bags of parking; the food's great (and very inexpensive); and there's plenty to keep adults and kids entertained for a good hour or two.
AND...they make their own ice-cream which is amazing!

Review of The Shaldon Coffee Rush

Nice - but could be a whole lot better
This place has a lot going for it : it's in Shaldon and it looks great.
Having said all that, we were really disappointed by the service and quality of the drinks when we were last in there. The owners make a big deal about how they've scoured the planet in the quest for the best tea, coffee and hot chocolate. I think they should have 'scoured' a bit harder - my tea (served in a caffetiere) was awfully weak and barely drinkable and my wife's hot chocolate was luke-warm and watery. Plus, the staff were surly and disinterested. All in all, a poor effort from a place that was once very good.

An oasis of calm in Teignmouth
We love this place!
It's a really surprising find in Teignmouth : friendly, relaxing and full of charm.
The menu is mainly Paninis - but not your usual run-of-the-mill varieties. Take a look at the menu on the wall; it's full of really interestingly named choices. My favourite is the Reverend Cranberry.
It's invariably busy, especially on Saturday - but it's worth hanging around for a table.
