Review of Hamburger Union

Silly Bread
This place has silly bread. It tastes fine, but is in a silly shape. It's clearly not just something that I have found, as it's explained on the menu as a handmade Portuguese bread, It tastes nice, but it looks silly, with little ears.
The bread isn't the only problem in the union, all the plates bowls and glasses are plastic. This made me feel like a child, and generally feels a bit cheap. It's cold in there too.
Having said this, the burger was good. It had an authentic American taste, probably derived from the phoney cheese on the burger. I really feel that noting replaces American cheese on a burger, it melts so satisfyingly and has the mild flavour which compliments a burger so well. The chips were fine.
All in all, it was ok, I wouldn't not go there again, but I won't be running to beat down the door.

Go for the 'Hard Milkshakes'
The menu of the this bar cum burger place is impressivly long, and flicking through you quickly realise that its mostly booze.
And what booze it is, the food is good, with big meaty burgers from a variety of animals, and good chips, but for me, the drinks shine.
The hard milkshakes, filled with yummy alcohol are a particular highlight, as is the root beer.

The most wonderful cakes.
I've loved this place since it first opened, before everyone got to know it was there. Back then the staff had a little more time on their hands, and would come and sit on the little low sofa's and chairs with you to explain the plethora of teas and cakes.
Now adays its a little busier, but no less wonderful. The staff will still spend the time explaining all of the cakes to you, and you'll need them to the first time.
When you do choose, it'll be hard as all the cakes look so nice, you wont be dissapointed, and may even need to start again at the begining as they are just so tempting.

Absinthe heaven
If you're looking for an unusual and ecclectic range of spirits, beat a path to Jerry's door.
With a vast selection of vodkas, rums and wines, absinthe where Jerry's really wins for me. With a selection ranging from the bog standard La Fee through the wild and wacky bottles to the 89.9% alcohol Hapsberg Special Reserve, Jerry's is the best place for your absinthe needs.

Review of Roka

Really truly beyond expectations
Japanese food of the highest order exists on Charlotte Street.
While seasonality is not heavily adhered to in Roka, the food is really, really bloody good.
We went after my graduation, and so I'm unable to remember all of the dishes we tried, but the maki came beautifully arranged on a long plate, and was clearly freshly prepared with bits of fish hanging from the end pieces, and delicate flower petals pressed into the rice. The Asparagras was so lovely we had to have it twice, with a sweet sauce of soy and mirin. the chicken wings were sicky and very moreish.
But desert was something else. The tonka bean ice-cream is one of the best ice-creams i've ever tasted, and a steamed custard of green tea was delicatly flavoured, and not too bitter. All in all, superb, beat a path to the door now!
