Review of Map Gift Shop
14 Apr 08, 14:30
One-stop present shop
Oh no! You're invited to a birthday party and haven't got time to go into town to buy a present! Well fear not, because Map Gift Shop is here to save the day. Stuffed full of lovely things, from pretty jewellery to quirkily kitsch homewares, I defy you not to find something you like. Oh, and they will gift-wrap your purchases too if you've left things *really* late.

Review of The Crown
04 Apr 08, 12:12
A dying breed
This is the sort of North London Irish alehouse that is, sadly, on the endangered list. Make no mistake, this is a proper old man's pub - go elsewhere if you want trendy imported continental lagers or gastropub fat chips. A pint of beer and a packet of crisps is the order of the day here. And why not? Sometimes you just need a nice friendly place to pop into for a swift one (or three) while you watch the football. Be warned, though: the ladies' loos are always freezing cold, so wrap up warm if you're indending on using the facilities.

Review of Pizza Hot 2 Go

Pizza with extras
I've got a real soft spot for Pizza Hot 2 Go and it's much better choice than going a few doors down for a Domino's, in my opinion. The guys who run it are pleasant and laid back, the pizza is good and you really can't argue with their "any pizza any size" deal for £6.99. And you can nip next door to the Crown for a swift one while your pizza cooks. Lovely. Also, the proprietors will throw in the occasional unexpected freebie - indeed, I one time they presented me with a pair of gold flip-flops. Pizza seasoned with a touch of surrealism just tastes that little bit nicer, no?

Review of St. Johns Tavern
27 Mar 08, 12:14
Local gem
I'm a big fan of this place. The menu is interesting and varied and the food is consistently great - I had a memorable steak and wine pie there recently which was ostensibly for two but could have fed our entire party of four. The dining room is atmospheric too, with an open fire and floor-to-ceiling paintings of varying artistic merit. Definitely the sort of place to take the in-laws when you're trying to persuade them that Archway really is an up-and-coming area.
