Review of Shimla Pinks

Shimla Pinks 1*

Not entirely sure why this place is still open to be honest, as it charges obscene prices for its sub-standard food and the service is atrocious. Went here a couple of weeks ago on the recommendation of a friend and really wished I hadn't. It's a very basic curry restaurant which I suspect used to be a great one, but its presence on Broad St has been brought down by the scallies that now seem to populate the place, and as a result, Shimla Pinks is really just another shabby curry restaurant in need of a facelift. It's not the worst place in the world- the food was okay, but the service was rubbish and the decor is out of date and makes you feel like you're on the set of a 1980s comedy. I wouldn't recommend this place- I'm not convinced it's the right way to go if you're in Birmingham and you want a curry. Head to the Ladypool Rd in Sparkbrook instead and see how a curry should really be made.

Review of Old Orleans

Old Orleans 1*

Quite honestly, one of the most horrendous meals ever- I would seriously pay someone to eat this for me if I could have done, it was so revolting. I was forced along to this place for a works do, and I wish I'd listened to the little voice in my head telling me it was a dive, because it is. It is shabby on the inside, the food is pretty expensive, and so obviously reheated rubbish bought from Iceland that I feel incredibly insulted that I should have had to pay anything for it. The service was laughable- a miserable young woman who clearly didn't want to be there. The food was horrendous- grey chicken, wilting salads, repulsive potatoes/chips. Avoid this place if you possibly can, it is not worth entering even if you can't find anywhere else. There is always Macdonalds.

Review of Mix At Mechu

Mechu Bar and Grill 1*

One of the worst places in Birmingham, donn't go here unless you enjoy pretentious, over-priced places with maniacal door policies, arrogant staff and dancefloors so crowded you may as well be siamese twins with everyone around you. I have been here a couple of times, though why I went more than once is beyond me. Both times I have seen friends (mainly male) turned away after my girl friends and I have been allowed in, and then been told we aren't allowed to exit once we're inside (erm, fire regulations anyone??!)! Both times I have also had to wait at the bar for about four years waiting to get served while the barmen/ladies choose whom they're going to serve by how big a tip it looks like they'll get off that customer. The music's rubbish, the clientele are old and pervy and I would say don't bother going here unless you feel like losing a little dignity and a lot of money.

Review of That Mexican Place

That Mexican Place- Horror 1*

This place is quite literally the stuff of nightmares. From the fake'saloon' style decor to the rubbish staff who blatantly don't care about what they're supposed to be doing, to quite possibly the worst food I've ever eaten, this place is one to avoid. If it had been possible, I wouldn't have even given this place one star. I went for a family meal there and ate some of the most horrendous tasting food I think has ever been made. 'Skins', which were actually just what looked (and tasted like) microwaved baked potatoes with the flesh scooped out and replaced with cold cheese and raw Spanish onion. 'Catfish Burrito', which tasted like old feet, and had the texture of socks. It seemed like the food that hadn't been used over the weekend was being used up that night. Honestly, out of 10 of us, only 2 actually ate their food (though they are boys and generally not that fussy), and, when we complained, we got told'just eat it, you won't get a discount, you know.' Needless to say, after that remark we all walked out without paying a penny. Yuk.

Review of Bar Risa

Risa 1*

One word and one word only could fully explain 'Risa' to a new visitor- dive. This place is possibly one of the worst places I have ever had the misfortune to visit in Birmingham. It is situated on Broad Street, but it might as well be in Mordor, given the amount of grossness that seems to emanate from the place. I have been here on a couple of drunken occasions, at the end of a night when there seems to be nowhere else to go. I will tell you now, if there is nowhere else to go other than here, GO HOME. Both times I have been to Risa I have been groped, fiddled out of change from buying drinks, groped again, pushed, started on by groups of lairy girls and generally had a horrendous time. The place is made up of five different rooms, each of which has a different 'theme', so there's the chill out room, dance room and so on. In theory it's a great place- lots of variety and lots of space means there should be plenty of room, right? Wrong. For some reason, the bouncers seem to let an obscene amount of people in, all of whom seem to want to either fondle you or fight you, and as a result, it all starts getting a bit messy. I will say something for Risa though, if you're on a stag night or a hen night, it's probably great fun. The drinks are relatively cheap (about £2.50 for a pint) and there's plenty of bars so you shouldn't be waiting for too long. I personally just find it a bit too 'cattle market' for my taste, and too 'street' too. It is also another venue which insists on employing a lady to hand out hand towels. Not necessary, and rather unfortunate for the lady in question, as she seems to get a lot of abuse of drunken teenagers who take delight in mocking her. I would only recommend Risa to a group of people who have literally no qualms about where they want to go and who don't mind being pushed around by drunken students on pub crawls. If this isn't your bag, avoid like the plague.
