Review of Cock Inn

The Cock at Wishaw
The Cock Inn is located in Wishaw, just off the M6 by Sutton Coldfield, and is one of the most popular 'country pubs' in Birmingham. The Cock underwent a complete revamp some 5 years ago, and is a fantastic location for a great meal and a few drinks. The setting is in a pretty rural location near Sutton Coldfield, and is easy to access from the M6 (follow signs to Wishaw/Minworth). The pub itself is a beautifully converted old farm house which has been sympathetically renovated in calm, warm colours, with lots of wooden paraphernalia to ensure people don't forget they're in the country. Adjoining the bar is the eating area, which is a proper sit-down restaurant, so it's unlikely if you turn up, especially during the evening/lunch times, that you'll get a table. Once seated, however, you can turn your attentions to the extensive menu, which is mainly Italian-inspired cuisine such as wood-burning oven baked pizzas and different pastas. A personal favourite of mine is the crab linguine, which is prepared fresh on site, along with all other dishes served. Meals are not huge but sufficient, and supplemented by complimentary bread etc. Puddings are very tasty, though expensive at £4.95 each. Service is prompt and friendly, and there is a good wine list to choose from. Dining here can be costly however, with the average main course about £9 or so, and drinks costing upwards from £3 for a small glass of wine. It can get busy at weekends, and noisy as a result, though the restaurant area feels pretty separate to the bar. Regular customers are generally locals who live in the area who, by and large, are wealthy people who drive large cars. Don't be surprised if you come out of the restaurant to find your Mini dwarfed by a couple of large Bentley's and a Maserati- it has happened to me! However, everyone is friendly enough, although the bar crowd do tend to be older people (50+), which makes the Cock not the kind of place you go for a rocking night out. It is, however, the perfect place for a lovely quiet meal, especially during the summer time, when you can take advantage of the rural location to admire the views and have a chill in the beer garden.
