Poppy Red
Poppy Red forms part of The Arcadian- a group of bars, restaurants and shops in the centre of Birmingham's gay quarter. Whilst not a gay bar, Poppy Red is gay friendly, and plays the kind of music (and atmosphere) that is welcoming to all. I have spent many nights in Poppy Red and have pretty much had a good night every time. The music is generally great- a mixture of dance, house, soul and funk- and DJs often mix it up with old classics by artists like Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin. The drinks aren't cheap, but this is what you should expect from a night out in The Arcadian. You're looking at around £2.80 for a pint of beer, roughly the same for a spirit and mixer. However, the selection of drinks available more than makes up for this, with lots of continental beers, an extensive wine list and a range of unusual spirits to try. It can get incredibly busy on a weekend, and a rather militant door policy means queues can reach stupid lengths whilst the actual venue remains pretty empty. As far as a dress code goes, it's generally typical casual 'going-out' fare, though plenty of ladies dress up to the nines (although men should be warned trainers, anywhere in The Arcadian, are not generally a good idea if you want to get in anywhere). This place is not so trendy that it seems try-hard, but can often be full of the trendy Selfridges crowd who seem to frequent most of The Arcadian, and a lot of people with bizarre haircuts and weird clothes. Don't let this put you off though, it is a great hangout for the weekend and the perfect bar to end up in if you fancy a bit of a dance.
