Superb "tapas" food 4*

Jason Atherton is perhaps the most gifted of Gordon Ramsay's proteges (along with Marcus Wareing) and here he is in his element, producing taster-sized portions so you can try a fair selection of his cooking.

Review of Le Gavroche

Supreme classical cooking 5*

You won't find better made French food than this in the UK. Desserts in particular set the standard, and most top UK restaurants regard the Roux Brothers pastry recipes as the definitive item. Prices are high in the evening, but at lunch there is a surprisingly reasonable lunch menu.

One of only four restaurants in Lodnon with two Michelin stars, and deservedly so.

Superb cooking 5*

Phil Howard's flagship sails serenely on, producing almost flawless food based on high quality ingredients. One of only four London restaurants with two Michelin stars, and deservedly so.

Review of Zafferano

Best Italian in London 5*

I have been coming here on a monthly basis since I discovered it, which means I have eaten here well over 100 times. Andy Needham has taken over from Giorgio Locatelli as chef but this has not affected the terrific seasonal Italian cooking. Ingredients are dazzling, many flown in from Italy three times a week.

Review of Pied A Terre

Serious Food 5*

This rather small, narrow dining room has for a long time served some of the best food in London. Currently at the stoves is Shane Osborne, who has retained the 2 Michelin stars that it earned under previous chef Tom Aikens. This makes it one of the best five restaurants in London according to Michelin. Service under David Moore is as smooth as one could hope for.

Review of Rasa Samudra

Authentic Keralan food 5*

This is the best of the mini-chain of Rasa locations. I especially recommend the Mysore bonda starter and the excellent uttapam, a form of Indian pizza.

Review of Haandi

Best in London? 5*

I am a regular at Haandi, which serves authentic Punjabi cooking at a price far below what you might expect in Knightsbridge. The tandoori dishes are terrfiic For a full review and photos see:

Delightfully enthusiastic staff 5*

This is the place I come to but all those little kitchen items that foodies feel they really need, from pastry cutters to Illy coffee machines. The premises are not that large and so you might expect a limited range, but this is more than offset by the remarkably enthusiastic staff, who are keen to help and seem able to track almost anything down.

Pop in and browse, but above all ask the staff for their advice.

Review of Mortimer and Bennett

Terrific Deli 5*

This rather cramped premises is the premier foodie destination in Chiswick. Excellent cheeses from Neal's Yard are here, as is bread from Sally Clarke and Poilane. Its shelves have a surprisingly large array of awkward to find essentials, like three types of risotto rice and quail eggs. The staff are helpful and enthusiastic.

Review of Ground

Disappointing and costly 1*

This considers itself a competitor to the Gourmet Burger Kitchen, claiming all manner of fine things about its burgers. Sadly, writing a menu is not the same thing as delivering in the kitchen.

The burger I tried had very ordinary meat, with small pieces of gristle and a generally disappointing texture, though it was cooked through OK. It was in a regular bun and had quite pleasant thin chips on the side, as well as an adequate (bought) pickled cucumber.

However this is still a very ordinary burger, and at £7 or so is charging a price for something better than it is. A vegetarian burger was dried out and sorry for itself. Gourmet Burger Kitchen need not have any sleepless nights over this place.
