Ça marche!

Didn't expect to find this level of sophistication at the wrong end of Clapham High Street so this was, overall, a pleasant surprise. Not too much to let on that you're in a French restaurant, and be aware that the menu is short (though the wine-list long), but the dining room is classy with cute swivel chairs, and has an impressive, dominating bar.

Started with the bastard offspring of a Mojito which was so tasty that I went for round 2. The artichoke soup for a starter was like eating pure golden sunshine. The rest of the food was fairly standard fare but there was no doubting its quality. A lover's tiff on the table opposite got everyone's attention and provided mild amusement, but it quickly turned sour and tainted the night - though obviously this was not the restaurant's fault! What they could improve on is the service, however. It was generally good-natured but far too slow - we ended up in there nigh on 3 hours, on a school night. And put a tricolore up!

For 2 of us, for 3 courses with a lot of booze, was £118 with service. Expensive but just about worth it.

Nearly six months old now (or longer) this is discreetly tucked away behind and on top of the Clapham North Pub in front of the Tube Station. The entrance is similarly discreet, requiring staff to buzz you in. The short stairwell leads on to a well decorated, chilled restaurant with friendly staff and excellent food. Foie gras is legendary. The wine list is fantastic and I would recommend the bar cocktails (Mojitos). It can be quite expensive depending on what you have - obviously - but it's a welcome sight to see more quality places appearing in this part of London. Perfect for a romantic night out or a place to impress people.
