in the past couple of years this pub was taken over and totally changed. now a beautiful pub with superb food. sandwiches at lunchtime are amazing :) and also full menu in evenings is completely to die for. you are paying for the quality but pricing completely fair and justified. brilliant transformation

This is a lovely pub. The food is amazing, quite pricey but you do get top quality. All the food is freshly prepared onsite, apparently they dont even have a freezer in the kitchen because the chef believes that fresh is best and you can really taste the difference in the food. The fish cakes are to die for. They serve a good mixture of beverages including real ales such as black sheep. The decore is charming and cosy, and out the back is a huge beer garden, which is tastefully landscaped. The Alfreds Head is one of the only pubs in Wantage to benefit from such a big enclosed garden. The staff are all great. We recently had a family function there with a buffet meal and we couldnt fault it. Its the perfect place to take a loved one for an intimate dinner when you want to spoil yourselves. It really is a great pub.

There was a time when the thought of going into the "Fred's Head" brought most local residents out in a cold sweat.

The lightening quick shot on a pub crawl that was taken at around 7pm, so you could be out by 7.05 before the more colourful locals came for a pint (and generally a fight)

Tables and chairs bolted to the floor and blood red carpets were the norm.

However... it's a beautiful Gastro pub with superb food and great catering for their function room. An absolute gem in Wantage.
