<![CDATA[Greater London - Brent - Kilburn - Eating, Drinking and Nightlife - Reviews]]> http://www.welovelocal.com Reviews from welovelocal.com en Think again? http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/brent/kilburn/chinese-restaurants/gung-ho-nw61ln.html#r36766 Don't even think about it! I ordered a selection of dishes, spare ribs (passable), dim sum (overly doughy and drenched in soy sauce), special fried rice (no taste whatsoever - how did they manage to get this wrong??) and Kung Po chilli chicken - a dish that I have had and enjoyed many times in a number of Chinese restaurants (this time consisted of boiled pieces of chicken in a watery chilli sauce)! The one saving grace was the steamed vegetables. If you are looking for delicious Chinese food then this isn't the place to look.

My favourite http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/brent/kilburn/cafes/the-wet-fish-cafe-nw61lg.html#r31176 Great coffee and good food, love going there on Sunday for lunch but it can get very busy. For breakfast they serve the best roasted muesli with fresh yogurt and fruit, really tasty. I find it as one of the best places in West Hampstead to catch up with friends for coffee.

Gorgeous http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/brent/kilburn/pizza-restaurants/basilico-nw37bb.html#r30540 Possibly some of the best pizzas I have ever eaten, seriously good. I used to do some work a few doors down from this particular Basilico on Finchley Road and I couldn't get enough of it. The pizzas are beautiful and so big, it's not the cheapest but it's well worth the cost. If you fancy doing something different then how about going to sit on Primrose Hill one evening (if the weather's good) and order a pizza, they'll deliver to you anywhere!

Slow food service http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/brent/kilburn/cafes/the-wet-fish-cafe-nw61lg.html#r27418 This place serves good food with a nice varied menu but the service is quite slow. If you are prepared to wait (and I mean wait) then a definite place to visit, but I think the size of the kitchen makes the speed of food service quite slow. We went on a Tuesday when it was not even half full. Friends we were with pre-warned us of this as it is apparently the norm, but they were also keen to go as the food is good.

More exciting brunch - Not for those looking for a full English! http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/brent/kilburn/cafes/the-wet-fish-cafe-nw61lg.html#r27157 We went to the Wet Fish last weekend for the first time in a long time. We are usually stalwarts of J, but decided to mix it up. The food was very good, with great scrambled eggs and smoked salmon. Others had "coddled eggs" and something involving chorizo, eggs and potato. If you are looking for a straight full English you won't find it here (although you could possibly order parts of many other things to make it up), but there's always time for a change! The decor is good, with the original features of the old fish shop tastefully preserved. The service is also good. We will be going again.

Best Steak in NW6 http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/brent/kilburn/british-restaurants/the-rotisserie-nw61ds.html#r27054 This restaurant is a gem to be discovered north of West Hampstead village on Fortune Green Road. As the others have said, it is small and cosy with good decor. The service is good and if you are a steak lover you'll love the menu. Although there are a number of cafes in West Hampstead, there are very few good restaurants.

People watching paradise http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/brent/kilburn/cafes/the-wet-fish-cafe-nw61lg.html#r23404 Built on the site of a Victorian fishmongers, this cafe has been sensitively decorated, keeping the original tiles and glasswork. On a sunny day the tables on the pavement get packed, so opt for one just inside the window. Despite so many restaurants and bars to pick from, it is one of the best places in West Hampstead to watch the world go by and secretly delight in the bad outfits / parking on the high street! Menu is typical cafe fare. During the day they do an excellent iced coffee but brownies were a bit disappointing (too dry). Dinner menu is varied and unusually you can pop in there on your way home and buy any bottle of wine served on the menu at retail prices (not the dining price). Opt for a rose in the summer (the one with the grenache is particularly quaffable!).

Rejuvenated pub http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/brent/kilburn/pubs/ye-old-black-lion-nw61rd.html#r10249 This previously "old man's pub" has had a major overhaul to create West Hampstead's first gastropub. They've done a great job on the interiors and the place is generally full, but I have been a bit disappointed with the scope of the menu, which seems to be a bit static and doesn't really live up to the rest of the pub. Also, service can occasionally be a bit slow. A place llike this is a welcome addition though to West Hampstead, which was really lacking a quality pub.

Really Great Local http://www.welovelocal.com/en/london/brent/kilburn/italian-restaurants/j-nw61uu.html#r10145 I have been to this restaurant on many occasions and think it is definitely worth a mention here. It is a great restaurant to live around the corner from. We have been for breakfast, lunch and dinner and always enjoy the great service of its truly Italian owners as well as the quality and price of the food. It is also one of the only places around which service brunch after midday on a Sunday (an amazing concept, expected by many antipodeans as normal, but hasn't really occurred to many of those running English cafes). In the last year or so the restaurant has had a complete renovation and is now looking good to match the good food. Enough said, go there!
